The objective of this study was to determine the effect of milking frequency on the behavioral patterns and productivity of lactating dairy cows. Twelve freestall-housed, lactating Holstein dairy cows (7 primiparous and 5 multiparous) were exposed to each of 2 treatments (over 21-d periods) in a replicated crossover design. Treatments were milking frequency of 2×/d (at 0600 and 1800 h) or 3×/d (at 0600, 1400, and 2200 h). Milk production, feeding, lying, and rumination behavior were monitored for each animal for the last 7 d of each treatment period. Milk samples were collected for the last 3 d of each period for milk component analysis. The results indicated that cows milked 3×/d produced 2.9 kg/d more milk than those milked 2×/d. Primiparous cows consumed 3.9 kg/d less dry matter (DM) than did multiparous cows. The extra time (14.6 min/d) required for milking 3×/d altered the distribution of cow behavioral activity throughout the day. Although this did not affect total daily lying or rumination time, we observed a tendency for cows milked 2×/d to spend less time (224.6 vs. 237.5 min/d) feeding and, thus, those cows tended to consume their feed at a faster rate (0.13 vs. 0.12 kg of DM/min) than cows milked 3×/d. For multiparous cows, the increase in feeding activity was facilitated through having longer (40.1 vs. 36.8 min/meal) and numerically larger meals (4.8 vs. 4.6 kg of DM/meal) when milked 3×/d. Alternatively, primiparous cows consumed smaller (2.9 vs. 3.2 kg of DM/meal) and more frequent meals (9.1 vs. 7.7 meals/d) throughout the day when milked 3×/d, resulting in a tendency for greater DM intake (24.7 vs. 23.6 kg/d) compared with primiparous cows milked 2×/d. These results indicate that under 3×/d milking schedules, primiparous cows will positively adjust their feeding behavior to achieve similar production increases as multiparous cows. In summary, milking 3×/d can be used to improve production; however, greater milking frequency elicits varying effects on the behavior of primiparous and multiparous cows, suggesting that grouping and management of cows based on parity may be beneficial.  相似文献

The objective was to determine the effect of milking frequency and dosing interval on pharmacokinetics of cephapirin after intramammary infusion. Six healthy Holstein cows were administered cephapirin (200 mg) into 1 rear mammary gland after each of 2 milkings. Cows were milked twice daily (2×) and dosed at a 12-h interval or 3 times daily (3×) and dosed at an 8- or 16-h interval. A duplicated Latin square design allowed each cow to receive all 3 frequency-dose treatments, with intervening washout periods. Concentrations of cephapirin (CEPH) and desacetylcephapirin (DAC) in milk from the treated glands were determined at each milking after infusion using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Data were fitted using 1- and 2-compartment pharmacokinetic models, as well as a noncompartmental model. Cephapirin was rapidly metabolized to DAC in the mammary gland, with DAC being the predominant agent in milk until 48 h after infusion. Pharmacokinetics of CEPH and DAC were similar for all treatment groups, with a 1-compartment model providing a better fit than a 2-compartment model in most instances. Milking frequency did not affect the length of time that milk CEPH concentration exceeded MIC50 or MIC90 values (the minimum inhibitory antimicrobial concentration needed to inhibit 50 or 90% of microbial activity, respectively) for common mastitis pathogens, except that cows milked 3× and dosed at a 16-h interval maintained inhibitory concentrations approximately 8 h longer than those dosed at an 8-h interval. Time for milk CEPH concentration to reach the FDA tolerance did not differ among treatment groups [mean ± SD; 68 ± 20, 66 ± 22, and 57 ± 18 h after last treatment for cows treated at 12, 16, and 8 h, respectively]. Mean residence time for CEPH in the mammary gland was linearly and negatively associated with the volume of milk produced. Calculated CEPH concentration in composite milk from all 4 mammary glands was below the FDA tolerance in all cows by 96 h after the last infusion, which is the labeled withholding time for the preparation used. Our findings suggest that this CEPH preparation, which is labeled for 2 doses 12 h apart, could be administered at a 16-h interval in herds milking 3×, with no significant effect on inhibitory concentrations in milk or withdrawal time; extended withdrawal times would be prudent for cows with very low milk production. Further investigation is needed to determine if milking frequency affects CEPH pharmacokinetics in cows with clinical mastitis.  相似文献

In lactating dairy cows, the onset of negative net energy balance (EB) at parturition causes a reduction in plasma leptin and is also associated with increased concentration of growth hormone (GH) and decreased concentration of insulin. These observations raise the possibility that opposite changes in plasma insulin and GH are partly responsible for reduced plasma leptin. To test this hypothesis, we first examined the effects of undernutrition without the confounding influence of parturition by using late lactating dairy cows fed 120% of their nutrient requirements or restricted to 33% of maintenance requirements. Plasma leptin was reduced within 24 h of feed restriction, and was associated with increased plasma GH and decreased plasma insulin. Complete food deprivation for 48 h caused similar changes in the plasma concentration of leptin. To determine if an elevation in GH is responsible for the fall in plasma leptin, dairy cows were treated with excipient or bovine somatotropin in early lactation or in late lactation. Growth hormone treatment had no significant effect on plasma leptin irrespective of stage of lactation. Finally, the effects of insulin were studied by performing euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamps in mid-lactating dairy cows. After 96 h of hyperinsulinemia, plasma leptin was increased significantly. These data indicate that insulin regulates plasma leptin in lactating dairy cows. They also suggest that, in undernourished lactating dairy cows, reduced plasma insulin could account for a portion of the decline in plasma leptin but that elevated plasma GH is unlikely to have a major effect.  相似文献

This study investigated the immediate and long-term effects of temporary alterations to postpartum milking frequency (MF) on milk production, body condition score (BCS), and indicators of energy status in pasture-grazed cows supplemented with concentrates. Multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows (n = 150) were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 groups at calving: milked twice daily (2×) throughout lactation (control), or milked either once daily (1×) or 3 times daily (3×) for 3 or 6 wk immediately postpartum, and then 2× for the remainder of lactation. During wk 1 to 3 postpartum, cows milked 1× produced 15% less milk and 17% less energy-corrected milk (ECM) than cows milked 2×. This immediate production loss increased to 20% less milk and 22% less ECM during wk 4 to 6 postpartum for cows that remained on 1× milking; these animals also produced less than 1× cows switched to 2× milking after 3 wk. During wk 8 to 32, when all cows were milked 2×, those previously milked 1× had sustained reductions in milk (−6%) and ECM (−8%) yields, which were not affected by the duration of reduced postpartum MF. In contrast, cows milked 3× postpartum had 7% greater milk yields during wk 1 to 6 compared with 2× controls, irrespective of the duration of increased MF. Milk yields also remained numerically greater (+5%) during wk 8 to 32 in cows previously milked 3×. Nevertheless, yields of ECM were not increased by 3× milking, because of lower milk fat and protein contents that persisted for the rest of lactation. In addition, indicators of cow energy status reflected an increasing state of negative energy balance with increasing MF. Cows milked 1× postpartum had greater plasma glucose and lower plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations during the reduced MF, and plasma glucose remained lower for 2 wk after cows had switched to 2× milking. Moreover, BCS was improved relative to 2× controls from wk 5 to 6. In contrast, cows milked 3× had lower plasma glucose concentrations, greater plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations, and greater BCS loss during wk 1 to 3; however, greater body fat mobilization was not sustained, indicating that additional energy supplements may be required to achieve better milk production responses. In conclusion, temporary 1× milking had lactation-long negative effects on milk and milk component yields but improved cow energy status and BCS, whereas temporary 3× milking immediately increased milk yield but did not improve milk fat and protein yields in pasture-grazed cows.  相似文献

Factors that affect frequency of death of lactating cows were studied for cows with records that terminated from 1995 through 2005. Analyses included effects of herd, year, month, parity, and lactation stage at lactation termination as well as cow breed and milk yield. A national data set (15,025,035 lactations in 45,032 herds) was analyzed with PROC GLM. Overall death frequency was 3.1% per lactation (5.7% per cow). Death frequency increased by 1.6% from 1995 to 2005, with a sudden increase of 0.9% from 2003 to 2004, probably because of a USDA requirement in late 2003 for euthanizing downer cows. Death frequency was 16.5% greater for lactations that terminated at ≤45 d than for those that terminated at ≥251 d. Death frequency increased with parity (2% greater for eighth parity and later than for first parity) and with lactation milk yield (0.4%/1,000 kg for Holsteins and Jerseys and 0.5%/1,000 kg for other breeds). Deaths were most frequent in July and least frequent in November. Within-herd breed differences (Holstein, Jersey, and other breeds) were small. The heritability of likelihood of death estimated from a sample of 79,162 Holstein cows was 1.3%. Death losses are increasing, perhaps partly because of increased milk yield and more intensive management regimens.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to measure ruminal and lactational responses of Holstein dairy cows fed diets containing 3 different starch levels: 17.7 (low; LS), 21.0 (medium; MS), or 24.6% (high; HS). Twelve multiparous cows (118 ± 5 d in milk) were assigned randomly to dietary treatment sequence in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 3-wk periods. All diets were fed as total mixed rations and contained approximately 30.2% corn silage, 18.5% grass silage, and 5.0% chopped alfalfa hay. Dietary starch content was manipulated by increasing dry ground corn inclusion (% of dry matter) from 3.4 (LS) to 10.1 (MS) and 16.9 (HS) and decreasing inclusion of beet pulp and wheat middlings from 6.7 and 13.4 (LS) to 3.4 and 10.1 (MS) or 0 and 6.8 (HS). In vitro 6-h starch digestibility of the diet increased as nonforage sources of fiber replaced corn grain (% of dry matter; 73.6, HS; 77.3, MS; 82.5, LS) resulting in rumen-fermentable starch content by 14.6, 16.2, and 18.1% for the LS, MS, and HS diets, respectively. Diets had similar neutral detergent fiber from forage and particle size distributions. Dry matter intake, solids-corrected milk yield, and efficiency of solids-corrected milk production were unaffected by diet, averaging 26.5 ± 0.8, 40.8 ± 1.6, and 1.54 ± 0.05 kg/d, respectively. Reducing dietary starch did not affect chewing time (815 ± 23 min/d), mean ruminal pH over 24 h (6.06 ± 0.12), acetate-to-propionate ratio (2.4 ± 0.3), or microbial N synthesized in the rumen (585 ± 24 g/d). Total tract organic matter digestibility was higher for HS compared with MS and LS diets (69.2, 67.3, and 67.0%, respectively), but crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and starch digestibilities were unaffected. As dietary starch content decreased, in vitro ruminal starch fermentability increased and, consequently, the range between HS and LS in rumen-fermentable starch (3.5 percentage units) was less than the range in starch content (6.9 percentage units). Under these conditions, dietary starch content had no measurable effect on ruminal fermentation or short-term lactational performance of high-producing Holstein dairy cows.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine if feed sorting differs between primiparous (PP) and multiparous (MP) cows, if sorting changes from the period of peak lactation to peak dry matter intake (DMI), and whether feed sorting affects efficiency of production. Data on DMI, milk production, feed sorting (particle size of offered and refused feed), and energy status (plasma nonesterified fatty acid, β-hydroxybutyrate, insulin and glucose concentration) were collected on 30 PP and 30 MP lactating Holstein dairy cows, individually housed and fed in tie-stalls, during 3 wk (wk 2, 6, and 10) over 10 wk of a lactation study. Cows averaged 53, 81, and 109 ± 10 d in milk (DIM) at the beginning of each of the 3 recording weeks. To determine sorting, feed samples were separated with a particle separator that had 3 screens (19, 8, and 1.18 mm) and a bottom pan, resulting in 4 fractions (long, medium, short, fine). Over the study period, MP cows consumed more DM and produced more milk than did the PP cows, but had similar efficiency of production (kg of milk/kg of DMI), and similar levels of plasma indicators of energy status. Across the study period, DMI increased, whereas milk yield decreased, resulting in decreased efficiency of milk production as cows moved further into lactation. All cows had higher nonesterified fatty acid and lower insulin concentrations in plasma at 53 DIM compared with at 81 and 109 DIM, suggesting they were mobilizing more body fat at that earlier stage of lactation. Across periods, all cows sorted against the longest ration particles, did not sort the medium ration particles, and sorted for fine ration particles; as a result, all cows consumed less neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and physically effective NDF (proportion of NDF retained on the 19- and 8-mm screens of the particle separator) than predicted. Greater selection against the longest ration particles was associated with greater efficiency of milk production; however, this sorting pattern also tended to be associated with lower milk fat percentage. The extent of the observed sorting against the longest, physically effective ration particles and for the finest ration particles was greater for PP cows than for MP cows across all 3 observation periods. Feed sorting remained consistent in cows across the DIM evaluated in this study and that this sorting behavior can affect the efficiency of milk production as well as milk fat percentage. Further, PP cows engage in more sorting of their ration than MP cows.  相似文献

Increased milking frequency (IMF) during early lactation has the potential for carryover responses following the return to normal herd milking frequency. The objective was to determine the consistency of response of cows in commercial dairy farms to IMF during early lactation. Cows (n = 398) were assigned randomly at calving within each of the 4 participating farms to 1 of 2 treatments. The control group was milked twice-daily (2×) during the entire lactation. The IMF group was milked 4-times daily (4×) starting on d 1 to 7, depending on farm, until d 21 postcalving and 2× thereafter. Cows in the IMF group were milked at the beginning and again at the end of the normal milking routine. Milking intervals differed across the farms for the 4× cows with a minimum interval of 3.5, 4.0, 5.0, and 6 h for each of the 4 farms, respectively. The milk yield of cows subjected to IMF increased by 2.2 ± 0.4 kg/d during the first 7 mo of lactation. Interactions of treatment with lactation group (primiparous vs. multiparous) were not significant. Although percentages of fat and protein in milk were decreased by early lactation IMF (3.69% ± 0.03 fat and 3.05% ± 0.02 true protein for control vs. 3.57% ± 0.03 fat and 2.99% ± 0.02 true protein for IMF), overall yields of protein were increased by IMF (1.02 ± 0.01 vs. 0.98 ± 0.01 kg/d). Early lactation IMF did not affect udder health as assessed by somatic cell count linear score. Cows subjected to IMF were 1.4 times more likely classified as subclinically ketotic than the control cows. Early lactation IMF has the potential to increase milk yield on commercial dairy farms. Although the direction of response was the same on all farms, the magnitude of the response was different among farms and appears influenced by management practices specific to each farm, which included, but were not limited to, housing system, stocking density, nutrition, genetics, and other covariates differing among farms.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of reduced milking frequency and increased dietary energy density in early lactation on milk production, energy balance, and subsequent fertility. Sixty-six spring-calving, multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: once-daily milking on a standard diet (1×ST); 3-times daily milking on a standard diet (3×ST); and 3-times daily milking on a high-energy diet. Treatments were imposed for the first 28 d of lactation, after which all groups were milked twice daily and fed the standard diet. During the treatment period, the 1×ST cows had 19.6% lower milk yield and higher milk fat and milk protein concentrations (15.7 and 10.2%, respectively) compared with 3×ST. Dry matter (DM) intake was similar between 1×ST and 3×ST during the treatment period (12.64 vs. 13.25 kg/ d; SED = 0.82). Daily energy balance was less negative for 1×ST compared with 3×ST during wk 1 to 3 of lactation [−3.92 vs. −5.30 unité fourragère lait (UFL)/d; SED = 0.65; 1 UFL is equal to the net energy for lactation of 1 kg of standard air-dry barley]. During the treatment period, the cows on the high-energy diet had 17% higher milk yield, higher DM intake (15.5 vs. 13.9 kg/d; SED = 0.71), and similar energy balance (−4.45 vs. −4.35 UFL/d; SED = 0.65) compared to 3×ST. Diet had no significant effect on any of the fertility variables measured. The interval to first ovulation was shorter for 1×ST than 3×ST (18.3d vs. 28.6d; SED = 1.76). In conclusion, once-daily milking in early lactation may promote earlier resumption of ovarian cyclicity, mediated through improved nutritional status.  相似文献

Our objective was to model dry matter intake (DMI) by Holstein dairy cows based on milk energy (MilkE), body weight (BW), change in BW (ΔBW), body condition score (BCS), height, days in milk (DIM), and parity (primiparous and multiparous). Our database included 31,631 weekly observations on 2,791 cows enrolled in 52 studies from 8 states of the United States, mostly in the Upper Midwest. The means ± standard deviations of these variables were 24 ± 5 kg of DMI, 30 ± 6 Mcal of MilkE/d, 624 ± 83 kg of BW, 0.24 ± 1.50 kg of ΔBW/d, 3.0 ± 0.5 BCS, 149 ± 6 cm height, and 102 ± 45 DIM. Data analysis was performed using a mixed-effects model containing location, study within location, diet within study, and location and cow within study as random effects, whereas the fixed effects included the linear effects of the covariates described previously and all possible 2-way interactions between parity and the other covariates. A nonlinear (NLIN) mixed model analysis was developed using a 2-step approach for computational tractability. In the first step, we used a linear (LIN) model component of the NLIN model to predict DMI using only data from mid-lactation dairy cows (76–175 DIM) without including information on DIM. In the second step, a nonlinear adjustment for DIM using all data from 0 to 368 DIM was estimated. Additionally, this NLIN model was compared with an LIN model containing a fourth-order polynomial for DIM using data throughout the entire lactation (0–368 DIM) to assess the utility of an NLIN model for the prediction of DMI. In summary, a total of 8 candidate models were evaluated as follows: 4 ways to express energy required for maintenance (BW, BW0.75, BW adjusted for a BCS of 3, and BW0.75 adjusted for a BCS of 3) × 2 modeling strategies (LIN vs. NLIN). The candidate models were compared using a 5-fold across-studies cross-validation approach repeated 20 times with the best-fitting model chosen as the proposed model. The metrics used for evaluation were the mean bias, slope bias, concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), and root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP). The proposed prediction equation was DMI (kg/d) = [(3.7 + parity × 5.7) + 0.305 × MilkE (Mcal/d) + 0.022 × BW (kg) + (?0.689 + parity × ?1.87) × BCS] × [1 – (0.212 + parity × 0.136) × exp(?0.053 × DIM)] (mean bias = 0.021 kg, slope bias = 0.059, CCC = 0.72, and RMSEP = 2.89 kg), where parity is equal to 1 if the animal is multiparous and 0 otherwise. Finally, the proposed model was compared against the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle (2001) prediction equation for DMI using an independent data set of 9,050 weekly observations on 1,804 Holstein cows. The proposed model had smaller mean bias and RMSEP and higher CCC than the Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle equation to predict DMI and has potential to improve diet formulation for lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

The response of dairy cows to omitting one milking weekly was investigated in two successive experiments conducted with Holstein cows milked twice daily. Experiment 1 compared the lactational performances and udder changes in eight cows (31.2 L/d, 201 d in milk) in the 5 wk before and the 5 wk after introducing the suppression of one milking weekly. Milk yield was recorded daily and milk composition twice weekly. Milk partitioning in the udder (alveolar and cisternal milk) and cisternal size (ultrasonography), 8 h after milking, were also measured at the start and the end of the experiment. Although daily milk yield decreased 32% during the experiment (10 wk), linear regression analysis revealed a loss of milk yield of 1.1 L/d (3.7%) as a consequence of the omission of one milking weekly. Milk composition, lactation persistency, and somatic cell count (SCC) were unaffected by milking omission. Milk partitioning in the udder decreased by 38% in alveolar milk volume and showed a tendency to decrease in cisternal milk volume (15%) and cisternal size (7%), as a result of milking omission and advancing lactation. Loss in total milk yield was negatively related with cisternal milk volume (r = -0.77) and cisternal size (r = -0.70) indicating smaller losses in the udders with large cisterns. In Experiment 2, five cows (21.0 L/d, 227 d in milk) previously adapted to the milking omission schedule were used to study the daily effects of milking omission on milk yield, milk composition and udder health during 10 wk. Milk yield and milk composition were approximately constant but SCC increased with lactation stage. The omission of one milking caused an important decrease in milk yield, fat content and SCC on the omission day and a compensatory increase over the following 2 d, but milk protein and lactose did not vary. All variables reached the average weekly value three days after the milking omission (six milkings). In conclusion, under the conditions used, omitting one milking weekly slightly reduced milk yield and did not affect milk composition when healthy cows were used. Milk losses by milking omission depend on udder cistern characteristics; evaluating cistern size by ultrasonography may be a useful tool for choosing cows that are better adapted to a reduced milking frequency.  相似文献

The current energy requirements system used in the United Kingdom for lactating dairy cows utilizes key parameters such as metabolizable energy intake (MEI) at maintenance (MEm), the efficiency of utilization of MEI for 1) maintenance, 2) milk production (kl), 3) growth (kg), and the efficiency of utilization of body stores for milk production (kt). Traditionally, these have been determined using linear regression methods to analyze energy balance data from calorimetry experiments. Many studies have highlighted a number of concerns over current energy feeding systems particularly in relation to these key parameters, and the linear models used for analyzing. Therefore, a database containing 652 dairy cow observations was assembled from calorimetry studies in the United Kingdom. Five functions for analyzing energy balance data were considered: straight line, two diminishing returns functions, (the Mitscherlich and the rectangular hyperbola), and two sigmoidal functions (the logistic and the Gompertz). Meta-analysis of the data was conducted to estimate kg and kt. Values of 0.83 to 0.86 and 0.66 to 0.69 were obtained for kg and kt using all the functions (with standard errors of 0.028 and 0.027), respectively, which were considerably different from previous reports of 0.60 to 0.75 for kg and 0.82 to 0.84 for kt. Using the estimated values of kg and kt, the data were corrected to allow for body tissue changes. Based on the definition of kl as the derivative of the ratio of milk energy derived from MEI to MEI directed towards milk production, MEm and kl were determined. Meta-analysis of the pooled data showed that the average kl ranged from 0.50 to 0.58 and MEm ranged between 0.34 and 0.64 MJ/kg of BW0.75 per day. Although the constrained Mitscherlich fitted the data as good as the straight line, more observations at high energy intakes (above 2.4 MJ/kg of BW0.75 per day) are required to determine conclusively whether milk energy is related to MEI linearly or not.  相似文献

Groundwater depletion is one of the most pressing issues facing the dairy industry in arid regions. One strategy to improve the industry's drought resilience involves feeding drought-tolerant forage crops in place of traditional forage crops such as alfalfa and corn silage. The objective of this study was to assess the productivity of lactating dairy cows fed diets with teff hay (Eragrostis tef) as the sole forage. Teff is a warm-season annual grass native to Ethiopia that is well adapted to drought conditions. Nine multiparous Holstein cows (185 ± 31 d in milk; mean ± standard deviation) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 diets in a 3 × 3 Latin square design with 18-d periods (14 d acclimation and 4 d sampling). Diets were either control, where dietary forage consisted of a combination of corn silage, alfalfa hay, and native grass hay, or 1 of 2 teff diets (teff-A and teff-B), where teff hay [13.97 ± 0.32% crude protein, dry matter (DM) basis] was the sole forage. All 3 diets were formulated for similar DM, crude protein, and nonfiber carbohydrate concentrations. Control and teff-A were matched for concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from forage (18.2 ± 0.15% of DM), and teff-B included slightly less, providing 16.6% NDF from forage. Dry matter intake, milk and component production, body weight, body condition score, as well as DM and NDF digestibility were monitored and assessed using mixed model analysis, with significance declared at P < 0.05. Treatment had no effect on dry matter intake (28.1 ± 0.75 kg/d). Similarly, treatment had no effect on milk production (40.7 ± 1.8 kg/d). Concentrations of milk fat (3.90 ± 0.16%) and lactose (4.68 ± 0.07%) were also unaffected by treatment. Teff-A and teff-B increased milk protein concentration compared with the control (3.07 vs. 3.16 ± 0.09%). Treatment had no effect on energy-corrected milk yield (43.4 ± 1.3 kg/d), body weight, or body condition score change. Additionally, treatment had no effect on total-tract DM or NDF digestibility. The objectives of this study were to: 1) objectively define meal criteria (minimum interval between meals) of free-stall housed cows fed via a feed alley, 2) determine which measures of feeding behavior were most repeatable, and 3) describe changes in the feeding behavior from early to peak lactation. An electronic monitoring system was used to record individual cow presence (hits; 6-s resolution) at the feed alley for 21 lactating cows for three 8-d periods: period 1, 35 +/- 16 (mean +/- SD), period 2, 57 +/- 16, and period 3, 94 +/- 16 DIM. A mixture distribution model was used to calculate the meal criterion (27.74 min) by fitting the log10 frequency distribution of the intervals between hits. The within-cow repeatability was highest for feeding activity (hits d(-1)) and intensity (hits per meal min), moderate for total daily mealtime (min d(-1)) and meal duration (min meal(-1)), and lowest for meal frequency (meals d(-1)). From periods 1 to 2, all cows showed increases in total daily mealtime, meal frequency, and meal duration; however, cows with lower meal frequencies and feeding intensity in period 1 showed the greatest increases. Cows with high feeding activity and intensity during period 2 showed proportionally greater increases during period 3. These results illustrate that some measures of feeding behavior are highly repeatable within cows, but variable between cows and across stages of lactation. Thus, tests of treatment effects on feeding behavior should be within cow and control for days in milk.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feed delivery frequency on the behavioral patterns and productivity of lactating dairy cows. Twelve freestall-housed, lactating Holstein dairy cows, including 6 primiparous (PP) and 6 multiparous (MP), milked 3×/d (at 1400, 2200, and 0600h), were exposed to each of 3 treatments (over 21-d periods) in a replicated Latin square design. Treatments included feed delivery frequency of (1) 1×/d (at 1400 h), (2) 2×/d (at 1400 and 2200 h), and (3) 3×/d (at 1400, 2200, and 0600 h). Milk production as well as feeding, lying, and rumination behaviors were electronically monitored for each animal for the last 7 d of each treatment period. Milk samples were collected for the last 3 d of each period for milk component analysis. Dry matter intake (DMI) varied with feed delivery frequency, with greatest DMI observed in cows fed 3×/d (27.8 kg/d) compared with those fed 2×/d (27.0 kg/d) or 1×/d (27.4 kg/d). Treatment had no effect on milk yield (41.3 kg/d) or efficiency of production (1.54 kg of milk/kg of DMI). Cows that did not receive delivery of feed following the 2200 h milking (treatment 1) and 0600 h milking (treatments 1 and 2) had lower DMI during the first hour after milking than those that received feed at all milkings (treatment 3). Total feeding time and meal frequency, size, and duration did not vary by treatment, but PP cows consumed smaller meals at a slower rate, resulting in lower DMI compared with MP cows. Primiparous cows consumed 50.1% and 26.1% less dry matter than MP cows during the first meal following the first and second milkings, respectively. Lying time did not vary by treatment, but PP cows spent more time lying (10.3 vs. 8.3 h/d) than MP cows. Under 3×/d milking schedules, greater feed delivery frequency resulted in greater DMI as a function of increased DMI following the return from milking and the delivery of feed.  相似文献

If the milking frequency in an automatic milking system (AMS) is increased, the intake of concentrated pellets in the robot may be raised accordingly. Consumption of a large quantity of starchy grains within a short time can impair the appetite, decrease voluntary visits to the milking stall, and lower intakes of dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Therefore, the hypothesis to be tested in this study was whether conventional starchy pellets fed in the AMS could be replaced with pellets rich in digestible NDF without impairing the cows’ motivation to visit a milking stall voluntarily. Fifty-four cows were paired according to age, milk yield, and days in milk, and were fed a basic mixture along the feeding lane (19.9 kg of DM/cow per d), plus a pelleted additive (approximately 5.4 kg of DM/cow per d) that they obtained in the milking stall and in the concentrate self-feeder that they could enter only after passing through the milking stall. The 2 feeding regimens differed only in the composition of the pelleted additive, which, for the control group, contained 49% starchy grain, and for the experimental group contained 25% starchy grain plus soy hulls and gluten feed as replacement for part of the grain and other low-digestible, NDF-rich feeds. Both diets resulted in similar rates of voluntary milkings (3.31 vs. 3.39 visits/cow per d). Average yields of milk and percentages of milk protein were also similar in the 2 groups. The results suggest that an alternative pellet composition can be allocated in the AMS in conjunction with basic mixture in the feeding lane, without any negative effect on appetite, milk yield, milk composition, or milking frequency of the cows. It also opens the opportunity to increase yields of milk and milk solids by increasing the amount of pelleted concentrates that can be allocated to selected high-yielding cows via the AMS, because this can be done while maintaining a high frequency of voluntary milkings.  相似文献

Forty-five energy balances were completed with 12 multiparous, lactating Holstein cows in a study designed to determine the energy content of wet corn distillers grains. Treatments were applied in a repeated switchback design and consisted of total mixed diets containing 31.4% corn silage, 18.4% alfalfa hay, and either 30.7% rolled corn and 16.7% soybean meal or 17.0% rolled corn and 31.2% wet corn distillers grains (dry matter basis). Replacement of corn and soybean meal with wet corn distillers grains reduced dry matter intake 10.9% but did not affect milk production. Neither digestible nor metabolizable energy were affected by diet composition. Heat and milk energy output did not differ by diet, but body energy retained was 2.8 Mcal/d less in cows fed the wet corn distillers grains diet. Multiple regression estimates of maintenance metabolizable energy requirement and partial efficiencies of metabolizable energy used for lactation and body energy deposition did not differ by diet. Pooled estimates were 136.2, 0.66, and 0.85, kcal of metabolizable energy/ body weight0.75 per day, respectively. Calculated by difference, wet corn distillers grains was estimated to contain 4.09, 3.36, and 2.27 Mcal/kg of dry matter as digestible, metabolizable, and lactational net energy, respectively. These energy estimates were 7 to 11% and 10 to 15%, respectively, greater than those reported for dried corn distillers grains by the 1989 and 2001 dairy NRC publications.  相似文献

Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 300) were assigned to 1 of 2 milking frequency treatments at parturition. Cows were either milked 6 times (6×) or 3 times (3×) daily to determine effects on early lactation milk yields and subsequent lactation persistency with or without use of recombinant bST (rbST). Treatments included a control group milked 3× and 3 groups milked 6× for either the first 7, 14, or 21 days in milk (DIM). Those 4 groups of cows all received rbST starting at 63 DIM. The fifth treatment group was also milked 6× for the first 21 DIM but those cows received no rbST during the entire lactation. All cows returned to 3× milking after their respective treatment periods ended. Cows milked 3× tended to produce more milk (43.2 vs. 41.5 and 41.0 ± 1.1 kg/d) during the first 9 wk of lactation compared with cows milked 6× for 7 or 21 DIM, respectively. Group milk yields after wk 9 averaged 38.3 ± 0.7 kg/d and did not differ among various groups assigned to an increased milking frequency in early lactation. Percentages of milk fat (3.8 ± 0.12%) and protein (2.9 ± 0.06%) did not differ among treatments during the first 9 wk after calving. Early lactation milk yield (41.9 ± 1.2 kg/d) did not differ between the 2 groups of cows milked 6× for 21 DIM. However, cows subsequently administered rbST (at 63 DIM) produced more milk (38.8 vs. 34.2 ± 0.9 kg/d) from wk 10 to 44. The number of cows sent to the hospital during the 305-d trial for mastitis (97), digestive disorders (14), respiratory issues (9), lameness (22), or retained placenta (16), were not affected by treatments (χ2 = 0.49). Under the conditions of this commercial dairy herd in Arizona, increasing milking frequency to 6 times daily for 7 to 21 d at the start of lactation conditions did not increase milk yield nor improve lactation persistency.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of milking frequency (once vs. twice-daily milking) and breed (Holstein-Friesians vs. Jerseys) on milk and milk solids (MS; milk fat + milk protein), yield per cow, milk composition, somatic cell count and lactation length; cow body weight, body condition score, and reproductive performance over a 4-yr period. Total cow numbers in each herd were 30, 35, 36, and 42 for Holstein-Friesians milked once or twice daily, and Jerseys milked once or twice daily, respectively. Forty hectares of pasture were subdivided into 4 smaller pastures of 10 ha each. Stocking rates for the once-daily herds were 16.7% greater than the twice-daily herd in their respective breed. An increased stocking rate was chosen to achieve equal milk and MS per ha from the 2 milking frequencies. Annual milk, fat, protein, and lactose yields per cow were less for once-daily than for twice-daily milking. Interactions were detected between milking frequency and breed for annual milk, fat, protein, and lactose yields per cow, because Jerseys were relatively less affected by once-daily than by twice-daily milking than Holstein-Friesians. Holstein-Friesian cows milked once daily produced 31.2% less milk and 29.4% less MS per cow than their twice-daily counterparts. In contrast, Jersey cows milked once daily produced 22.1% less milk and 19.9% less MS per cow than their twice-daily counterparts. Milk per ha was 17.7 and 9% less for the once-daily Holstein-Friesians and once-daily Jersey herds, respectively, compared with their twice-daily counterparts, because the greater stocking rate for the once-daily herds did not fully compensate for the milk loss per cow. Milking once daily increased somatic cell count throughout the year in both breeds. Cows milked once daily conceived 3 d earlier, took 5 d less from calving to conception, and needed 11% fewer controlled internal drug release devices than those milked twice daily. Milking once daily is a viable milking option for New Zealand farmers who are prepared to trade-off loss of MS income for increased time to accomplish other non-milking activities.  相似文献
