The composition of milk replacer (MR) for calves greatly differs from that of bovine whole milk, which may affect gastrointestinal development of young calves. In this light, the objective of the current study was to compare gastrointestinal tract structure and function in response to feeding liquid diets having a same macronutrient profile (e.g., fat, lactose, protein) in calves in the first month of life. Eighteen male Holstein calves (46.6 ± 5.12 kg; 1.4 ± 0.50 d of age at arrival; mean ± standard deviation) were housed individually. Upon arrival, calves were blocked based on age and arrival day, and, within a block, calves were randomly assigned to either a whole milk powder (WP; 26% fat, DM basis, n = 9) or a MR high in fat (25% fat, n = 9) fed 3.0 L 3 times daily (9 L total per day) at 135 g/L through teat buckets. On d 21, gut permeability was assessed with indigestible permeability markers [chromium (Cr)-EDTA, lactulose, and d-mannitol]. On d 32 after arrival, calves were slaughtered. The weight of the total forestomach without contents was greater in WP-fed calves. Furthermore, duodenum and ileum weights were similar between treatment groups, but jejunum and total small intestine weights were greater in WP-fed calves. The surface area of the duodenum and ileum did not differ between treatment groups, but the surface area of the proximal jejunum was greater in calves fed WP. Urinary lactulose and Cr-EDTA recoveries were greater in calves fed WP in the first 6 h post marker administration. Tight junction protein gene expression in the proximal jejunum or ileum did not differ between treatments. The free fatty acid and phospholipid fatty acid profiles in the proximal jejunum and ileum differed between treatments and generally reflected the fatty acid profile of each liquid diet. Feeding WP or MR altered gut permeability and fatty acid composition of the gastrointestinal tract and further investigation are needed to understand the biological relevance of the observed differences. 相似文献

Growth and the digestibility of nutrients can be greatly affected by diet preweaning and the rate at which calves are weaned. A 2 × 2 factorial design [moderate (MOD) or high (HI) milk replacer (MR) feeding rates and abrupt (AB) or gradual (GR) weaning] was used to compare these effects. Calves (n = 50) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: MOD-AB, MOD-GR, HI-AB, and HI-GR. Calves assigned to MOD-AB were fed 0.66 kg of MR for the first 42 d and then 0.33 kg for the last 7 d; those assigned to MOD-GR were fed 0.66 kg of MR for 28 d, 0.33 kg for 14 d, and 0.17 kg for the last 7 d; those assigned to HI-AB were fed 0.66 kg of MR for 7 d, 0.82 kg for 7 d, 1.1 kg for 28 d, and 0.66 kg for the last 7 d; and those assigned to HI-GR were fed 0.66 kg of MR for 7 d, 0.82 kg for 7 d, 1.1 kg for 14 d, 0.66 kg for 14 d, and 0.33 kg for the last 7 d. All calves received the same MR [25% crude protein (CP), 17% fat; dry matter (DM) basis] and were given ad libitum access to water and a textured starter (42% starch and 20% CP). On d 26 to 30 and d 45 to 49, a fecal sample was taken from 5 calves in each treatment via the rectum to estimate apparent digestibility coefficients (dC). Apparent dC of DM, organic matter, and fat were greater for HI versus MOD calves. Apparent dC of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and sugar were greater for MOD versus HI calves. Apparent dC of DM was greater for AB versus GR calves [90.9, 89.0 ± 0.5384 (standard error)], and the apparent dC of acid detergent fiber was greater for GR versus AB calves (39.5, 32.3 ± 1.67). Feed efficiency was greater for HI versus MOD and AB versus GR. There were no significant differences between CP or starch dC based on treatment, and no interactions were observed. Starter consumption was greater for MOD calves compared with HI calves, and GR calves consumed more than AB calves. These results suggest that providing calves high amounts of MR preweaning enhanced readily available nutrient dC, but providing moderate amounts of MR resulted in increased fibrous fraction dC. Accordingly, the AB weaning strategy had higher dC for DM and organic matter, but there was a depression in fiber dC. 相似文献

To evaluate the effects of milk replacer (MR) feeding rate (FR) and frequency (FF) on performance, abomasal emptying, and nutrient digestibility in the southeastern United States, Holstein calves (n = 48/season) were enrolled at 8 d of age (DOA) during summer [June to August, body weight (BW; mean ± SD) = 40.71 ± 4.35 kg] and winter (November to January, BW = 42.03 ± 3.83 kg). Within season, calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement including 2 FR [0.65 (low) or 0.76 kg of solid per day (high) of a 26% crude protein and 17% fat MR], and 2 FF [2× (0700 and 1600 h) or 3× (0700, 1600, and 2200 h) daily]. Calves were housed in polyethylene hutches and managed similarly throughout the trial. Milk replacer (12.5% solids) was fed to calves based on their respective treatments until 42 DOA, when MR allowance was reduced by 50% and offered once a day (0700 h) for the following 7 d until weaning. Calves remained on trial until 63 DOA. Calf starter and water were offered ad libitum. Ambient temperature and relative humidity inside and outside hutches were measured hourly. Starter and MR intakes were recorded daily. Respiration rate and rectal temperature were recorded 3 times a week. Structural growth and BW were measured weekly. Acetaminophen (50 mg/kg of BW) mixed with MR was fed to a subset of calves (0700 h, n = 10/treatment per season) on 20 DOA. Plasma was collected at 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 330, 360, 420, and 480 min after feeding, to analyze acetaminophen. The acetaminophen concentration-time curve was modeled to the first derivative of Siegel's modified power exponential equation, and the time for plasma acetaminophen to reach maximum (Tmax) was calculated to evaluate abomasal emptying rate. During the pre- (14.9–17.9 DOA) and postweaning (51.0–54.0 DOA) periods, a subset (n = 8/treatment per season) of calves was used to determine the apparent digestibility of nutrients, using chromic oxide as the external marker. Feeding 3× reduced preweaning respiration rate during summer and reduced rectal temperature during winter. Increasing FR improved BW gain and structural growth. Feeding more times per day tended to improve growth during winter but not summer. We found no effect of treatment on nutrient digestibility. Increasing FR had no effect on Tmax during winter but tended to delay Tmax of plasma acetaminophen during summer. Regardless of season, increasing FF lowered Tmax of plasma acetaminophen. In conclusion, increasing FF accelerated abomasal emptying and might reduce heat load of preweaning dairy calves but improved growth only during winter. Increased MR allowance improved growth in both seasons but delayed abomasal emptying only under heat stress conditions. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate nutrient intake and digestibility, and growth performance of calves when fed a milk replacer (MR) at 2 feeding rates. Male Holstein calves [n = 49; 45.0 ± 5.2 (mean ± SD) kg of body weight (BW); 3 to 4 d of age] were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 MR [27% crude protein (CP), 18% fat, dry matter (DM) basis; 14% solid] feeding programs: (1) 0.66 kg of DM/d for first 39 d divided into 2 equal a.m. and p.m. meals followed by one-half of the allotment per day for 3 d fed in the a.m. feeding only (moderate); (2) 0.96 kg of DM/d for the first 42 d divided into 2 equal a.m. and p.m. meals followed by one-half of the allotment per day for 7 d fed in the a.m. feeding only (high). A textured starter fed to calves contained whole grains with 20% CP and 44% starch (DM basis). At d 56, calves were moved into groups by treatment (4 calves/pen) and fed the same starter blended with 5% hay until d 112. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design, or as a completely randomized design with repeated measures when applicable. Over the entire nursery period (d 0–56), there were no differences in average daily gain (0.63 vs. 0.64 kg/d) and hip width change (4.44 vs. 4.57 cm) for moderate- versus high-fed calves. Apparent digestibility of DM (76.5 vs. 70.3%), organic matter (77.4 vs. 71.2%), CP (78.8 vs. 72.6%), and neutral detergent fiber (37.2 vs. 22.7%) differed between moderate- and high-fed calves when estimated at d 51 to 55. From d 56 to 112, average daily gain (0.99 vs. 0.91 kg/d), hip width change (5.32 vs. 4.68 cm), and gain/DM intake (0.335 vs. 0.307 kg/kg) were greater, but DM intake per kg of BW (0.028 vs. 0.028 kg/kg) did not differ for calves previously fed moderate versus high. Feeding calves more than 0.66 kg of DM/d from a 27% CP, 18% fat MR did not improve BW gain and structural growth in the nursery period (d 0–56), and decreased these in the grower period (d 56–112) partially through reduction in digestibility of the starter. 相似文献

Early life milk intake can influence the survival and future productivity of replacement heifers. The present study determined the effects of different amounts of milk through step-up/step-down or conventional feeding methods on the performance of dairy calves. Thirty-nine Holstein calves (18 male and 21 female) were used in a completely randomized design. Calves were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) conventional milk feeding (CONV; 4.5 L/d of milk from d 1 to 50 and 2 L/d of milk at d 51 and 52 of the study; total milk intake = 229 L); (2) low milk intake with step-up/step-down method (L-SUSD, 4 L/d of milk from d 1 to 10, 6 L/d from d 11 to 20, 8 L/d from d 21 to 30, 6 L/d from d 31 to 40, 4 L/d from d 41 to 50, and 2 L/d milk at d 51 and 52 of the study, total milk intake = 284 L); (3) high milk intake with step-up/step-down method (H-SUSD, 6 L/d of milk from d 1 to 10, 8 L/d from d 11 to 20, 10 L/d from d 21 to 30, 8 L/d from d 31 to 40, 6 L/d from d 41 to 50, 4 L/d milk at d 51, and 2 L/d milk at d 52 of the study, total milk intake = 386 L). All calves were weaned at d 52 and followed until d 70. Performance data (every week), skeletal growth (d 52 and 70), and ruminal fermentation parameters and digestibility (d 35, 55, and 70) were analyzed as repeated measurements with PROC MIXED of SAS version 9.3 (SAS Institute Inc.). A treatment × time interaction was observed for total dry matter intake (TDMI) as follows: TDMI differed among all treatments where H-SUSD > L-SUSD > CONV from d 11 to 38 of study, greater for H-SUSD versus other treatments from d 3 to 10 and d 39 to 70 of study. Starter feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) were greater in H-SUSD calves than in CONV calves, and L-SUSD treatment was intermediate for those traits. The H-SUSD calves tended to have greater body weight (BW) and lower feed efficiency than calves fed CONV or L-SUSD treatments. The treatments did not affect structural growth parameters, except for hip width, which tended to be greater in H-SUSD calves than CONV calves. Regardless of treatments, ADG, starter feed intake, BW, and body measurements increased as calves aged, whereas feed efficiency increased from d 1 to 52 of study and decreased from d 52 to 70 of study. The treatments had no effect on digestibility, rumen parameters, or fecal score. Overall, in calves that were weaned at 52 d and fed milk 3 times daily, the high milk intake (386 L) through the SUSD method did not increase diarrhea or decrease digestibility but increased starter feed intake and ADG. 相似文献

Forty-four Holstein calves were fed a direct-fed microbial (DFM) and 1 of 2 milk replacers to evaluate calf performance and growth. Treatments were (1) a control milk replacer [22:20; 22% crude protein (CP) and 20% fat], (2) an accelerated milk replacer (27:10; 27% CP and 10% fat), (3) the control milk replacer with added DFM (22:20+D), and (4) the accelerated milk replacer with added DFM (27:10+D). Dry matter intake, rectal temperatures, respiration scores and rates, and fecal scores were collected daily. Body weight, hip and withers height, heart girth, blood, and rumen fluid samples were collected weekly. Effects of treatment, sex, week, and their interactions were analyzed. Calves fed an accelerated milk replacer, regardless of DFM supplementation, consumed more CP and metabolizable energy in the milk replacer. No treatment differences were found for starter intake or intake of neutral detergent fiber or acid detergent fiber in the starter. Calves fed the accelerated milk replacer had greater preweaning and weaning body weight compared with calves fed the control milk replacer. Average daily gain was greater during the preweaning period for calves fed the accelerated milk replacer, but the same pattern did not hold true during the postweaning period. Feed efficiency did not differ among treatments. Hip height tended to be and withers height and heart girth were greater at weaning for calves fed the accelerated milk replacer compared with calves fed the control milk replacer. Fecal scores were greatest in calves fed DFM. Overall acetate, propionate, butyrate, and n-valerate concentrations were lower in calves fed the accelerated milk replacer, but DFM did not have an effect. Rumen pH was not different. Blood metabolites were unaffected by DFM supplementation, but calves fed the accelerated milk replacer had increased partial pressure of CO2, bicarbonate, and total bicarbonate in the blood. Effects of spray-dried animal plasma in calf milk replacer on health and growth of dairy calves 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Male Holstein calves (n = 120) purchased from local dairy farms were fed one of three calf milk replacers for 42 d. Experimental milk replacers were formulated to contain whey protein concentrate (WPC) as the primary protein source or WPC plus 5% spray-dried bovine plasma (SDBP) or spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP). The SDPP was heated to remove heat-insoluble materials and provide products with similar IgG content. Calves were also fed commercial calf starter and water for ad libitum consumption. Intake, change in body weight (BW), feed efficiency, morbidity and mortality were determined. Mortality was 10, 3, and 2 in calves fed WPC, SDBP, and SDPP treatments, respectively. Morbidity, measured as the number of days that calves had diarrhea was reduced by 30% when SDBP or SDPP were fed. Calves had diarrhea for 6.9, 3.9, and 4.7 d during the 42-d study when fed commercial calf milk replacer containing WPC, SDBP, and SDPP, respectively. Fecal scores tended to be reduced and feed efficiency tended to be improved when SDBP or SDPP were fed. Mean intakes of total dry matter during the 42-d study were greater when calves were fed SDBP or SDPP and were 661, 710, and 684 g/d for calves fed WPC, SDBP, and SDPP, respectively. Mean BW gains from d0 to 42 were 231,261, and 218 g/d, respectively. Calves fed SDPP tended to have lower BW gain during the first 28 d of the study. However, difference in daily BW gain from d 1 to 28 was only 39 g/d. Inclusion of SDBP or SDPP in milk replacer reduced morbidity and mortality of milk-fed dairy calves. 相似文献

We evaluated the effect of feeding soy flour-containing milk replacer (MR) with a lower than normal pH on growth, nutrient digestibility, digesta pH, and gastrointestinal development of preweaned calves. The study consisted of 48 neonatal calves, allocated to 8 treatments in a 2-factor 4 × 2 randomized design. The calves received 2 types of MR containing soy flour. The proportion of soy crude protein (CP) to total CP (SP/CP) in MR was 50% (MR50 treatment) or 80% (MR80 treatment), respectively. The pH of the reconstituted MR was decreased by 1 N HCl from to 6.2 to 5.5, 5.0, or 4.5. We measured body weight and dry matter intake and calculated feed conversion rate in the MR50 treatment. We monitored urinary and fecal pH consecutively for 5 h when calves were 25 d old. We also conducted a digestion trial to determine nutrient digestibility from 49 to 55 d of age. At 63 d old, calves were slaughtered, and gastrointestinal pH, mass index, and morphology were evaluated. Reducing the pH of MR containing soy flour improved average daily gain and feed conversion rate, increased Ca digestibility, and reduced urinary, fecal, and digesta pH in the rumen, reticulum, and omasum. Although treatments had no effect on gastrointestinal mass index, the pH 5.0 treatment led to favorable ruminal epithelium growth, and the pH 5.5 treatment led to better intestinal epithelium growth. Increasing SP/CP from 50 to 80% decreased P digestibility and fecal and digesta pH in rumen, reticulum, and omasum. Moreover, the MR80 treatment reduced the mass index of the abomasums and jejunum. In conclusion, decreasing the pH of MR containing soy flour to a pH of 5.0 to 5.5 improved the digestive tract of preweaned calves. A pH reduction to 4.5 had adverse effects on intestinal epithelium growth. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate calf performance and diet digestibility when feeding a milk replacer (MR; 25% crude protein, 18% fat, dry matter basis) at a moderate (MOD) and high (HI) rate, along with MOD with neomycin-oxytetracycline inclusion (1.43 each g/kg; NTMOD). Male Holstein calves (n = 48; 45 ± 1.0 kg of body weight; 3 to 4 d of age) were housed in individual pens for 56 d. All calves were initially fed 0.66 kg of dry matter from MR for the first p.m. and following a.m. feeding, then randomly assigned to 1 of 2 feeding programs: (1) 0.66 kg of dry matter/d for first 39 d divided into 2 equal a.m. and p.m. meals and 0.33 kg for 3 d fed once daily in the a.m. feeding only (MOD, NTMOD); (2) 0.85 kg of dry matter/d for the first 4 d divided into 2 equal a.m. and p.m. meals, 1.07 kg of dry matter/d for the next 31 d divided into 2 equal a.m. and p.m. meals, and 0.48 kg for 7 d fed once daily in the a.m. feeding only (HI). Calves were fed a textured starter containing whole grains (20% crude protein, 43% starch, dry matter basis). Fecal samples were collected for 5 individual calves per treatment between d 47 to 51 to estimate digestibility. Calves were moved into groups by treatment (4 calves/pen) at 56 d and fed the same starter blended with 5% hay until d 112. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design with repeated measures when applicable using mixed models. Milk replacer dry matter intake averaged 27.4 kg for MOD and NTMOD and 40.3 kg for HI per calf. Preweaning starter intake was less for calves fed HI versus MOD. Preweaning calf BCS change was greater for calves fed HI versus MOD. Preweaning medical treatment days were fewer for calves fed NTMOD versus MOD. Postweaning starter intake was less for calves fed HI versus MOD. Postweaning average daily gain was less for calves fed NTMOD versus MOD. Over the 56-d nursery trial, calves fed HI had less starter intake than calves fed MOD. Digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber were greater for calves fed MOD versus NTMOD or HI during d 47 to 51 postweaning. Additionally, digestibility of fat was greater for calves fed MOD versus HI. During d 56 to 112, hip width change was greater for calves fed MOD versus NTMOD or HI. Over 0 to 112 d, body weight gain was 100, 98, and 102 kg, whereas hip width change was 10.2, 9.0, and 9.2 cm for calves fed MOD, NTMOD, and HI, respectively. Any preweaning improvements from feeding NTMOD or HI over MOD were lost during the postweaning period, which could be partially explained by reductions in diet digestibility. 相似文献

Milk replacer was supplemented with nucleotides and fed to dairy calves from birth through weaning to examine the potential for enhancing recovery of small intestinal function after enteric infection. Three treatments of 23 calves each were fed milk replacer (10% body weight/d) supplemented with no nucleotides (C), purified nucleotides (N), or nucleotides from an extract of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S). Average daily gain, health scores, fecal dry matter, and fecal bacteria were monitored, and blood was analyzed for packed cell volume, glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine. Calves were monitored twice daily for fecal score, and 48 h after increased fecal fluidity was recorded, intestinal function was evaluated by measuring absorption of orally administered xylose (0.5 g/kg of body weight). Packed cell volume of blood was greater for treatment N for wk 2 and 5 compared with other treatment groups. Four calves per treatment were killed, and intestinal tissue was evaluated for morphology, enzyme activities, and nucleoside transporter mRNA expression. Treatment S calves had increased abundance of nucleoside transporter mRNA, numerically longer villi, and lower alkaline phosphatase than other groups. Growth measurements and plasma concentrations of glucose, BUN, creatinine, and IgG were not different between treatments; however, BUN-to-creatinine ratio was higher for treatment N, possibly indicating decreased kidney function. There were also no treatment effects on fecal dry matter and fecal bacteria population. However, N-treated calves had the highest detrimental and lowest beneficial bacteria overall, indicating an unfavorable intestinal environment. Supplementation of purified nucleotides did not improve intestinal morphology or function and resulted in higher fecal water loss and calf dehydration. Supplementation of nucleotides derived from yeast tended to increase calf intestinal function, provide a more beneficial intestinal environment, and improve intestinal morphology. 相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to examine the effect of milk replacer (MR) feeding rate (FR) and frequency (FF) on glucose metabolism before and after weaning during summer and winter in the subtropical climate of the southeastern United States. Holstein calves (n = 48/season) were enrolled at 8 d of age (DOA) in the summer (June to August, body weight = 40.6 ± 0.7 kg) and winter (November to January, body weight = 41.9 ± 0.8 kg). In each season, calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement including 2 FR [0.65 (low) or 0.76 kg of solids/d (high) of a 26% CP and 17% fat MR] and 2 FF [2× (0700 and 1600 h) or 3× (0700, 1600, and 2200 h)]. Calves were managed similarly and housed in polyethylene hutches bedded with sand. Milk replacer (12.5%) was fed based on treatments until 42 DOA when FR was reduced by half and offered 1×/d (0700 h) for 7 d. Plasma was collected weekly at 1400 h for analyses of glucose and insulin concentrations in all calves. Pre- and postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations of a subset of calves (n = 10/treatment per season) were measured on 20 DOA. A subset of calves (n = 8/treatment per season) was subjected to an intravenous glucose tolerance test (GTT) on 27 and 57 DOA and insulin challenge on 28 and 58 DOA at 1030 h. Average ambient temperature was 26.1 ± 2.2°C in summer and 12.9 ± 5.4°C in winter. During the preweaning period in both seasons, feeding high increased plasma glucose concentrations compared with low, and increasing FF reduced basal insulin concentrations. Compared with 2×, feeding 3× did not affect postprandial glucose but lowered insulin in the summer, whereas in the winter, increased glucose from 30 to 180 min but lowered insulin from 240 to 420 min after MR feeding. Following GTT before weaning in both seasons, 3× reduced insulin increment and area under the curve compared with 2× without affecting glucose disposal. After weaning, treatment did not affect glucose disposal or insulin responses after GTT during winter, but calves fed 3× had faster glucose disposal and stronger insulin responses than 2× during summer. In both summer and winter, preweaned calves fed 3× had greater decrement and area under the curve of plasma glucose after insulin challenge, suggesting enhanced peripheral tissue insulin response compared with 2×. This effect persisted after weaning only during summer. Increasing FR had no effect on metabolic responses in both seasons. In conclusion, increasing MR FF from 2 to 3 times per day reduced insulin secretion but enhanced insulin response on peripheral tissues of preweaned calves regardless of season. 相似文献

Forty-eight Holstein bull calves were assigned to a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized block design. Main effects were colostrum versus a serum-derived colostrum supplement, 0 versus 1 g of trypsin inhibitor added at the initial 2 feedings, and milk replacer containing 0 or 50% CP from whole egg. Calves were bled at 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h after birth for determination of serum immunoglobulin (Ig). G. Serum IgG concentrations were lower in calves consuming the colostrum supplement compared with calves consuming colostrum. Apparent efficiency of absorption of IgG was similar. Trypsin inhibitor did not affect IgG concentrations or absorption of IgG. Calves were fed either milk replacer for 28 to 35 d (preweaning phase) and weaned when they consumed 0.7 kg of starter grain for 2 consecutive days. The postweaning phase was from weaning to d 56. Feeding colostrum supplement resulted in higher fecal scores postweaning (1.90 vs. 1.58) and overall (1.85 vs. 1.65) and fewer days medicated preweaning (5.1 vs. 2.2 d) and postweaning (3.9 vs. 1.9 d) and overall (9.0 vs. 4.2 d). Calves were treated for upper respiratory tract infections and diarrhea. Dry matter intake and weaning age were not affected by treatment. Postweaning (1.69 vs. 1.2 kg) and overall (1.22 vs. 1.0 kg), calves that received colostrum and egg milk replacer consumed more dry matter and starter. Postweaning, calves fed colostrum and egg milk replacer had similar or greater body weight and gains compared with calves fed colostrum and milk protein milk replacer. Preweaning, feed efficiency was greater for calves fed colostrum (0.44 vs. 0.34), trypsin inhibitor (0.42 vs. 0.36), and milk protein milk replacer (0.48 vs. 0.30) compared with calves fed colostrum supplement, no trypsin inhibitor, and egg milk replacer, respectively. Trypsin inhibitor increased feed efficiency postweaning. Calves fed trypsin inhibitor and milk protein milk replacer were more efficient preweaning and overall than calves fed trypsin inhibitor and egg milk replacer. Results indicate that the blood derived colostrum supplement did not provide as much IgG as colostrum (4.55 g/L vs. 14.6 g/L, respectively), that feeding 1.0 g of trypsin inhibitor did not enhance serum IgG concentrations, and that the egg milk replacer-fed calves fed colostrum performed nearly as well as calves fed colostrum and the milk protein milk replacer. 相似文献

Forty-five Holstein calves were fed milk replacers containing either antibiotics [MRA (oxytetracycline at 138 mg/kg and neomycin at 276 mg/kg), n = 22)] or Enteroguard [MRE, a blend of fructooligosaccharides, allicin, and gut-active microbes at (129 mg/kg, n = 23)] from birth to 5 wk of age to compare effects on average daily gain and on incidence of scours. Performance was evaluated by measuring weight gain, feed efficiency, and fecal scores. The overall body weight gains and severity of scours were not different between treatments, nor were there differences in starter intake or mean body weight gain. During wk 2, the average gain of calves fed MRA was less than that of calves fed MRE (0.07 vs. 0.09 kg/d, P = 0.09), and greater during wk 5 (0.62 vs. 0.51 kg/d, P < 0.01); however, total gain for calves fed MRE was not different from calves fed MRA. Likewise, average feed efficiencies (gain/dry matter intake) were not different. Severity of scours, as measured by fecal scores, and concentrations of serum proteins, an indirect measure of immunoglobulins, were similar for calves fed MRA and MRE. The results suggest that antibiotics in milk replacers can be replaced with compounds such as fructooligosaccharides, probiotics, and allicin to obtain similar calf performance. 相似文献

We investigated the effects of increasing dietary protein and energy on concentrations of selected blood metabolites and hormones in Holstein heifers. Twenty-four heifers were fed 1 of 4 milk replacer (MR) diets for 9 wk (n = 6/diet): control [20% crude protein (CP), 21% fat MR fed at 441 g of dry matter (DM)/d], HPLF (28% CP, 20% fat MR fed at 951 g of DM/d), HPHF (27% CP, 28% fat MR fed at 951 g of DM/d), and HPHF+ (27% CP, 28% fat MR fed at 1,431 g of DM/d). Heifers were fed twice daily; water and starter (20% CP, 1.43% fat) were offered free choice and starter orts recorded daily. Serum and plasma aliquots from blood samples collected twice weekly after a 12-h fast were analyzed for insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP), growth hormone (GH), insulin, glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, triglyceride, and plasma urea nitrogen concentrations. Only plasma glucose, IGFBP-2, and IGFBP-3 were affected by diet. Dietary treatment differences were only noted when the control was compared with the average of the other 3 diets. The addition of fat to the MR (HPLF vs. HPHF) and increased volume of MR (HPHF vs. HPHF+) had no effect on plasma glucose concentration or relative abundance of IGFBP-2 or IGFBP-3. Heifers fed the control diet had less glucose, greater IGFBP-2, and less IGFBP-3 than the average of the other 3 diets. There was a diet by week interaction for IGF-I. Serum IGF-I concentration in control heifers varied in a quadratic manner with a nadir (20 ± 4 ng/mL) at wk 4, whereas IGF-I increased linearly in heifers on other diets. Both insulin and triglyceride changed over time in a complex pattern (significant linear and quadratic contrast effects). The greatest concentrations were measured at wk 0.5 with nadirs at wk 6 for both insulin and triglyceride. Serum GH concentration decreased in a linear manner from wk 0.5 to wk 9 in all heifers. Relative abundance of IGFBP-2 was quadratic over time with the greatest amount of IGFBP-2 observed at wk 5. With the exception of glucose, IGF-I, IGFBP-2, and IGFBP-3, the blood variables measured were not influenced by treatment. The IGF-I -GH-IGFBP axis requires further study in heifers to deduce effects of nutrition on hypothalamic regulation of metabolism. We expected to see more treatment differences in concentrations of metabolites involved with protein and fat metabolism. It is likely that the diets used in this study were not diverse enough in composition to elicit such changes or that the efficiency of use of absorbed protein and fat was not different in these animals. 相似文献

Twenty-four newborn Holstein heifer calves were fed 1 of 4 milk replacers (MR): control (20% CP, 21% fat; MR fed at 441 g/d); high protein/low fat (HPLF; 28% CP, 20% fat; MR fed at 951 g/d); high protein/high fat (HPHF; 27% CP, 28% fat; MR fed at 951 g/d); and HPHF MR fed at a higher rate (HPHF+; 27% CP, 28% fat; MR fed at 1,431 g/d). Dry calf starter (20% CP, 1.43% fat) composed of ground corn (44.4%), 48% CP soybean meal (44.4%), cottonseed hulls (11.2%), and molasses (1.0%) was offered free choice. Heifers were obtained from a commercial dairy, blocked by groups of 8 in the order acquired, and randomly assigned to treatments within group. Upon arrival at the research farm, heifers were fed the control for 2 feedings. Treatments were imposed when heifers were 4 ± 1 d of age. Heifers were on study for 61 ± 1 d. Body weight and body size measures were taken weekly. Four-day total collection of feed refusals, feces, and urine was initiated at 57 ± 1 d of age. Heifers were slaughtered at the end of the collection period to evaluate body composition. Preplanned contrasts were used to compare control to all, HPLF to HPHF, and HPHF to HPHF+. Heifers fed the control diet consumed more starter than those fed other treatment diets, but their total dry matter intake and apparent dry matter digestibility were lowest. Fecal output was highest in heifers fed the control diet, whereas urine output and urine N excretion were lowest. Nitrogen intake and urine N excretion were greater for heifers fed HPHF+ compared with HPHF but were not affected by MR fat content (HPLF vs. HPHF). Retention (g/d) of N and P was greater in heifers fed all nutrient-dense diets compared with those fed the control diet, but was not improved by increasing fat in the milk replacer (HPLF vs. HPHF) or by increasing the amount fed. Addition of fat to the milk replacer (HPLF vs. HPHF) increased empty body weight fat content without improving average daily gain or frame measures. Increasing the volume fed (HPHF vs. HPHF+) increased growth rate and empty body weight, but HPHF+ heifers were neither taller nor longer and their carcasses contained more fat. Clear improvements in growth and nutrient retention were observed with more nutrient-dense diets, but most of the improvements were seen with the increased protein intake relative to the control MR; adding fat to the high protein MR did not further improve lean tissue gain. 相似文献

Lysolecithin is an antiinflammatory emulsifier associated with improved apparent digestibility of total dietary fat and improved feed efficiency in dairy cattle. However, it is unknown if lysolecithin (LYSO) improves performance in calves. Moreover, since many conventional milk replacers use vegetable-sourced fat (e.g., palm oil), nutrient absorption and fecal score may be affected in neonatal calves. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of LYSO supplemented in milk replacer on performance, metabolites, and gut health of preweaned dairy calves. Holstein calves (n = 32) with adequate passive transfer were assigned in pairs (16 blocks) balanced by birth weight, date of birth, and sex at 1 d of age to randomly receive either LYSO (mixed in 2 milk replacer feedings at a rate of 4 g/d Lysoforte, Kemin Industries Inc., Des Moines, IA) or a milk replacer control (nothing added). Both treatments were fed 6 L/d milk replacer [22.5% crude protein, 16.2% crude fat (vegetable oil fat source) on a dry matter basis with 14% solids] by bucket in 2 daily feedings for 56 d. Calves were individually housed in wooden hutches and offered a commercial calf starter (24.6% crude protein and 13.9% neutral detergent fiber) and water by bucket ad libitum. Feed refusals and calf health was assessed daily. Weights and blood metabolites (glucose, total serum protein, albumin, creatinine, triglycerides, and cholesterol) were sampled weekly, and calves completed the study before weaning at 56 d of age. The effects of LYSO on calf average daily gain, feed efficiency, and blood metabolites were evaluated using a linear mixed model with time as a repeated measure, calf as the subject, and block as a random effect in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The effect of LYSO to improve the odds of abnormal fecal score was evaluated using a logistic model. Supplementation of LYSO increased average daily gain (control 0.28 ± 0.03 kg; LYSO 0.37 ± 0.03 kg; least squares means ± standard error of the mean) and increased feed efficiency (gain-to-feed; control 0.25 ± 0.03; LYSO 0.32 ± 0.03). Similarly, LYSO calves had a higher final body weight at d 56 (control 52.11 ± 2.33 kg; LYSO 56.73 ± 2.33 kg). Interestingly, total dry matter intake was not associated with LYSO despite improved average daily gain (total dry matter intake control 1,088.7 ± 27.62 g; total dry matter intake LYSO 1,124.8 ± 27.62 g). Blood glucose, albumin, creatinine, triglycerides, and cholesterol were not associated with LYSO. Indeed, only total serum protein had a significant interaction with LYSO and age at wk 5 and 6. Moreover, control calves had a 13.57 (95% confidence interval: 9.25–19.90) times greater odds of having an abnormal fecal score on any given day during the diarrhea risk period from d 1 to 28. The inclusion of LYSO as an additive in milk replacer in a dose of 4 g/d may improve performance, and calf fecal score, preweaning. Further research should investigate the mechanisms behind the effects of LYSO on fat digestibility in calves fed 6 L/d of milk replacer with vegetable-sourced fat. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of feeding frequency and route of administration on abomasal luminal pH in suckling calves. Six male dairy calves with cannulae in the abomasal body were administered the following six treatments in a randomized crossover design: 24 h fasting, suckling of a high-quality milk replacer (all-milk protein; 12% of body weight [BW]/d) at 12-h (2x), 8-h (3x), 6-h (4x), and 3-h (8x) intervals, and ruminal intubation of milk replacer (12% of body weight/day) at a 12-h (2x) interval. Abomasal luminal pH was measured every second for 24 h with miniature glass pH electrodes. Least squares mean 24-h fasting abomasal luminal pH was 1.73, whereas mean 24-h pH after suckling and intubation of milk replacer every 12 h were higher at 3.44 and 3.17, respectively. Increasing the frequency of milk replacer suckling to 3x, 4x, and 8x increased mean 24-h abomasal luminal pH; however, there was no difference in mean 24-h pH between 3x (3.69), 4x (3.64), and 8x (3.67) suckling. The percentage of the 24-h recording period that abomasal luminal pH was > 3.0 was 0, 49, 53, 61, 61, and 71% for fasting, 2x intubation of milk replacer, and 2x, 3x, 4x, and 8x suckling of milk replacer, respectively. Increasing the frequency of milk replacer suckling may be efficacious in the prophylaxis of abomasal ulceration in milk-fed calves. 相似文献

Little is known about feeding behavior in group-housed calves fed with an automated feeding system. To examine the influence of milk feeding level on feeding behavior in such a system, we fed calves either 4 L of milk replacer per d (LIM) or allowed ad libitum (AL) intake (n = 25 per treatment). In a second experiment another set of calves was fed 4 L (low milk volume, LM) or 12 L (high milk volume, HM) of whole milk (n = 14 per treatment). Results were analyzed separately using a mixed model including calf, treatment, and time as factors, and feeding behavior as variables. Milk intake by AL or HM calves increased during the first 2 wk, reaching a maximum intake that reached a plateau during the next 4 wk. Concentrate intake was negligible during the first 14 d, with LIM and LM calves increasing their consumption from d 22. Concentrate intake by AL and HM calves remained low until weaning in experiment 1 and the end of trial in experiment 2 (d 43 for both). The frequency of visits was higher in LIM and LM calves than in AL and HM calves during the first 42 d, with most visits being unrewarded (∼90%). This resulted in higher occupancy time of the feeder by LIM and LM calves. During weaning in experiment 1 (d 44 to 48), there was no difference in occupancy time between treatments. Calves in the AL and HM groups distributed their visits throughout the day, whereas LIM and LM calves made most visits just before the time when the next allowance of milk became available. In experiment 1, AL calves showed a greater weight gain during the first 21 d but LIM calves had greater gains between d 22 and 50. However, the overall average daily weight gain was higher for AL calves. In experiment 2, HM calves had a greater gain than LM calves for the first 4 wk of trial but there was no difference between treatments during the last 2 wk. There were no differences between treatments in the incidence of disease in either experiment. The duration of time spent lying down in experiment 2 was higher for HM calves but only when they were older (4 to 5 wk). No differences were found between treatments at 2 wk of age. In conclusion, feeding high levels of milk or replacer improved weight gain and reduced unrewarded visits to the milk feeder, improving the efficiency of use of the milk feeders. However, it reduced concentrate intake and the advantages were less obvious after 3 wk of age. No increased incidence of disease was found for high-fed calves (AL and HM groups). We measured the effects of milk replacers containing 0, 33, 66, or 100% of the total replaceable whey protein as bovine plasma protein (PP), without or with Ile supplementation, on the intake, growth, and health of 124 male Holstein calves for 35 d. Milk replacers were formulated to contain 18% crude protein and 20% fat, with contents of Lys and Met equalized. When fed to calves at 1.5% of body weight (dry matter basis) under thermoneutral conditions, diets were predicted to allow average daily gains of 0.55 kg/d based on metabolizable energy or 0.40 kg/d based on apparent digestible protein. Protein supply was more limiting than energy so that differences in protein use could be detected. Dry matter intakes decreased with increased PP, irrespective of Ile supplementation. Final body weights decreased linearly with increasing PP, regardless of Ile supplementation. Average daily gain tended to be affected in a quadratic manner as PP increased, either with or without Ile supplementation; average daily gain and gain-feed ratio were greatest for calves fed diets containing 33% PP and lowest for calves fed 100% PP. The analyzed Lys content in the milk replacers was variable compared with formulated values, and this may have affected growth results. However, the gain-Lys ratio was affected by an interaction of the linear effect of increasing PP with Ile supplementation: it decreased with increasing PP but was improved by supplementation with Ile for calves fed 100% PP. Body measurements decreased with increasing PP inclusion; only decreased heart girth was reversed with Ile supplementation. The lowest and highest inclusion of PP, regardless of Ile supplementation, decreased the occurrence of scours compared with the control diet (all whey protein). Calves fed the lowest and highest PP without Ile supplementation also had fewer total days of scours in the first 21 d. In addition, calves fed 100% PP without supplementation of Ile had fewer days of medication compared with the control diet. Even at the highest PP inclusion, average daily gain was minimally affected if Ile was supplemented. Growth rates, gain-feed ratio, and gain-Lys ratio were decreased at higher PP inclusion, but Ile overcame part of the reduction in gain-Lys ratio for 100% PP. Additional titration studies will have to be conducted to determine optimal PP inclusion rates, with a focus on supplementation of potentially limiting essential AA, as well as effects at higher growth rates. 相似文献

Milk replacers (MR) for calves usually contain more lactose and less fat than bovine whole milk (WM). There are insufficient data to determine whether these MR formulations are optimal for calves fed at high planes of nutrition. Thus, the effect of 3 MR formulations and a WM powder were evaluated on growth, feeding behavior, and blood metabolites in 96 male Holstein calves fed ad libitum and with 45.5 ± 4.30 kg (mean ± standard deviation) BW at arrival. Calves were blocked based on arrival sequence, and randomly assigned within block to one of the 4 treatments (n = 24 calves/group): a high-fat MR (25.0% fat, dry matter basis; 22.5% protein, 38.6% lactose; 21.3 MJ/kg; HF), a high lactose MR (44.6% lactose, 22.5% protein, 18.0% fat; 19.7 MJ/kg; HL), a high protein MR (26.0% protein, 18.0% fat, 41.5% lactose; 20.0 MJ/kg; HP), and a WM powder (26.0% fat; 24.5% protein, 38.0% lactose; 21.6 MJ/kg; WP). In the first 2 wk after arrival, calves were individually housed and were fed 3.0 L of their respective liquid feed 3 times daily at 135 g/L. They were then moved to group housing and fed ad libitum until d 42 after arrival. Weaning was gradual and took place between d 43 and 70 after arrival; thereafter, calves were fed solids only. Concentrates, chopped straw, and water were available ad libitum throughout the study. Body weight was measured, and blood was collected at arrival and then weekly thereafter from wk 1 to 12. Weight gain and height were greater in HL than WP calves. In the preweaning phase, HL and HP-fed calves consumed more milk than WP, and HL-fed calves consumed more milk than HF calves. In wk 10, starter feed intakes were lower in HF calves than in the other groups. In the preweaning phase, ME intakes were the same for all treatments. This suggests that milk intakes were regulated by the energy density of the milk supplied. The percentage of calves requiring therapeutic interventions related to diarrhea was greater in WP-fed calves (29%) than HF and HL calves (4%), whereas HP (13%) did not differ with other groups. This was coupled with lower blood acid–base, blood gas, and blood sodium in WP than in MR-fed calves. Calves fed HF had greater serum nonesterified fatty acids compared with other groups, and greater serum amyloid A compared with WP and HL calves. Among the serum parameters, insulin-like growth factor-1 and lactate dehydrogenase correlated positively with ME intake and average daily gain. The high lactose and protein intakes in HL and HP calves led to greater insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations than in WP-fed calves. Although growth differences were limited among MR groups, the metabolic profile largely differed and these differences require further investigation. 相似文献
