The aims of this study were to estimate mortality rates in Norwegian dairy calves and young stock up to 1 yr of age, identify risk factors for calf mortality, and evaluate the etiology of calf mortality based on postmortem analyses. The material comprised 3 data sets. The first data set included information on 289,038 offspring in 14,474 dairy herds registered in the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System (NDHRS) in 2005. The second included recordings on 5,382 offspring in 125 Norwegian dairy herds participating in a survey on calf health, and the third included results from postmortem analyses of 65 calves from 37 of the survey herds. The calf mortality rate during the first year of life in all herds registered in the NDHRS was 7.8%, including abortion (0.7%) and stillbirth (3.4%). The overall calf mortality rate in liveborn calves in the survey herds was 4.6%. Cows with severe calving difficulties had an odds ratio (OR) of 38.7 of stillbirth compared with cows with no calving difficulties. Twins and triplets showed an increased risk of stillbirth compared with singletons (OR = 4.2 and 46.3, respectively), as did calves born in free stalls compared with tie stalls (OR = 1.9). Respiratory disease increased the risk of death in all age groups with hazard ratios (HR) of 6.4, 6.5, 7.4, and 5.6 during the first week of life, 8 to 30 d of age, 31 to 180 d of age, and 181 to 365 d of age, respectively. Diarrhea increased the risk of death among calves younger than 180 d of age, but the influence was only significant during the first week of life and between 8 to 31 d of age (HR = 2.4 and 2.9, respectively). Calves born during the winter were more likely to die during the first week of life than calves born during the summer (OR = 1.2), and were more likely to die during the first month of life than calves born during the autumn (OR = 1.2). Calf mortality rates in all age groups increased with increasing herd size. Calves housed in a group pen from 2 wk of age were more likely to die during the first month of life than calves housed individually (HR = 1.5). Bronchopneumonia and enteritis were the most frequent postmortem diagnoses, with proportional rates of 27.7 and 15.4%, respectively. 相似文献

Herd-level risk factors for dairy calf and heifer mortality in France were identified by calculating herd-level variables (including mortality risk or rate) using the National Bovine Identification Database (2005 and 2006). Eleven dairy production areas representing different livestock systems were also included. Statistical analyses were based on a probit model (mortality risk or rate = 0 or >0) and a linear model (mortality risk or rate >0) corrected by the sample bias Heckman method. The same associations were reported for 2005 and 2006. The mortality risks or rates for calves and heifers were positively associated with the proportion of purchased cows or being a Milk Control Program member and negatively associated with adhering to the Good Breeding Practices charter and having an autumn calving peak. The associations between mortality and the breeds or the production areas were positive or negative, depending on the classes of animal. Mortality and having a beef herd in addition to the dairy herd were negatively associated for noncrossed birth to 2-d-old calves, noncrossed 3-d- to 1-mo-old calves, and 3-d- to 1-mo-old heifers. Having a beef herd probably provides specific know-how related to newborn and young calf management that makes it easier to attain low mortality in pure-breed dairy calves. The proportion of males born was positively associated with mortality for the birth to 2-d-old calves (all classes) and for the 3-d- to 1-mo-old beef-crossed calves, but negatively for all classes of heifers. This indicates that heifer management was improved when the availability of newborn heifers decreased, resulting in low mortality. This lower mortality is apparent for all classes of heifers present on the farm during the year when the proportion of males was low, and demonstrates an anticipatory effect. In conclusion, this study shows that the presence of a beef herd in addition to the dairy herd within a farm is associated with decreased dairy calf mortality. It also shows that heifer mortality decreases when the proportion of heifers born decreased. These determinants of dairy calf and heifer mortality are of great importance for farmer advisors, the dairy industry, and the political decision makers. 相似文献

The aims of this study were to estimate the incidence of calf diseases in Norwegian dairy herds, improve calf health recordings in the Norwegian Cattle Health Recording System (NCHRS), and investigate different methods for validation of calf health data. A longitudinal, cross-sectional survey of calf health in Norway was performed between September 1, 2004, and January 31, 2007. The participating dairy herds were randomly selected from among herds registered in the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System as having at least 15 cow-years. Each herd participated for 1 yr. Diseases and treatments of calves of up to 180 d of age in 135 dairy herds were reported using the NCHRS. In total, 6,668 calves were born in the participating dairy herds during the project period. A total of 573 (29.6%) of the 1,936 calf health recordings reported were recordings of diseases and 1,363 (70.4%) were events of preventive therapy, dehorning, or castration. The recorded incidence of diarrhea and respiratory disease was 3.8% and 2.9%, respectively. The median age of occurrence of diarrhea and respiratory disease was 17 and 37 d, respectively. Three different methods, based on sampling of diseased calves, dehorning as an indicator of a well-functioning recording system, or feedback on degree of commitment to calf health recording, were tested to assess validation of the calf health records. The 3 methods indicated an underestimation of calf health records in the NCHRS of approximately 40% and an estimated “true” incidence of diarrhea and respiratory disease of 5.5 and 4.1%, respectively. The results from this study demonstrate the importance of encouraging farmers to conduct calf health recordings. They also indicate that finding a standardized method for validation of health data is a considerable challenge. 相似文献

The mortality of 8,964 heifer calves born in 122 dairy herds in southwest Sweden in 1998 to 2000 was monitored from January 1998 until December 2000. Farmers were requested to send carcasses for necropsy from animals that died from 1 d of age to first calving. Age and seasonal patterns of mortality were investigated using Kaplan-Meier curves. The median herd-level mortality risk was 2.1%. In total, 3.1% of the animals died before 90 d of age, 0.9% between d 91 and 210, and 2.2% between d 211 and first calving or d 810 (27 mo of age). The median age at death was 50 d and the risk of dying was highest during the first week of life. Of the 421 dead animals, 236 (56%) were subjected to either postmortem examination or were diagnosed as having died from trauma based on information from the farmers. In total, pneumonia was the most common cause of death (27%). However, in calves less than 31 d old, enteritis was the most common cause of death; in young stock 211 to 450 d old, trauma dominated; and in young stock more than 450 d old, trauma and calving-related diseases accounted for a majority of the mortality. The largest proportion of deaths was observed from January to March, and in June. Kaplan-Meier curves suggested that housing in small-group pens was associated with the lowest mortality (other housing systems were single pens and large-group pens with automatic milk feeders), but the association was not significant. 相似文献

Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica Dublin is the most common Salmonella serotype found in the dairy sector in Denmark. Salmonella antibody level in bulk-tank milk (BTM), indicative of Salmonella Dublin infection in the herd, has been recorded regularly in all Danish dairy herds through a surveillance program since 2002. The objective of this study was to investigate whether high BTM Salmonella antibody level was associated with high calf mortality at herd level. Other risk factors for high calf mortality were also investigated: breed, production type (organic vs. conventional), number of animals purchased, herd size, and number of neighbor herds within a 4.9-km radius. Data from the Danish Cattle Database including the Salmonella surveillance program from September 2007 through August 2008 were used. Dairy herds with more than 20 cows were included (n = 4,337). Because of a highly right-skewed distribution of calf mortality with many zero values, calf mortality had to be dichotomized for the analysis. Therefore, in this study, high calf mortality was defined as calf mortality of more than 6.5% for calves aged 1 to 180 d. A logistic analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with the probability of a herd having high calf mortality. The following factors were significantly associated with high calf mortality: high BTM Salmonella antibody level, odds ratio (OR) = 2.0 (95% confidence interval = 1.6-2.4), organic production OR = 1.4 (95% confidence interval = 1.1-1.7) for organic versus conventional production, and breed. Purchase of 8 or more animals increased the OR of high calf mortality more than purchase of 1 to 7 animals, which again had a higher OR compared with purchase of 0 animals. Because only 14.3% of the population consisted of herds with high BTM Salmonella status, the estimated proportion of herds with high calf mortality could only be reduced from 38.7 to 36.5% by eradicating Salmonella from the Danish cattle population (i.e., a population attributable risk of 2.2%). This showed that although there is a strong association between BTM Salmonella status and calf mortality, the problem with high calf mortality will not be solved by eradicating Salmonella. All other things equal, a population with more Salmonella-infected herds would gain a larger reduction in calf mortality from a Salmonella control campaign. Nevertheless, individual herds with a high within-herd prevalence of Salmonella are likely to benefit, both economically and regarding animal welfare, from controlling pathogenic Salmonella types in cattle. 相似文献

Health problems can be thought of as phenotypic expressions of the complex relationships between genes, environments, and phenomes as a whole. Detailed evaluations of phenotypic expressions of illness are required to characterize important biological outcomes. We hypothesized that classifying dairy calf mortality phenotypes via a systematic postmortem analysis would identify different cause-of-death diagnoses than those derived from treatments alone. This cross-sectional study was carried out on a dairy calf ranch in the northwestern United States from June to September 2017 and focused on calves ≤90 d of age. Comparisons were made between causes of death based on 3 levels of information: on-farm treatment records alone, necropsy-based postmortem analyses in addition to treatment records, and Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) results in addition to all other information. A total of 210 dairy calves were necropsied during this study, of which 122 cases were submitted to WADDL. Necropsy- and WADDL-derived mortality phenotypes were in almost perfect agreement (Cohen's κ = 0.86) when broadly categorized as diarrhea, respiratory, diarrhea and respiratory combined, or other causes. The level of agreement between on-farm treatment records and postmortem-derived results was low and varied by the level of diagnostic detail provided. There was just fair agreement (κ = 0.22) between treatment-based and necropsy-based phenotypes without WADDL input and only slight agreement (κ = 0.13) between treatment-based and corresponding necropsy-based phenotypes with WADDL input. Even for those cases in which causes of death aligned along a comparable pathologic spectrum, the lack of detail inherent to standard treatment-based causes of death failed to identify meaningful target areas for intervention. This was especially apparent for numerous cases of necrotizing enteritis and typhlitis (cecal inflammation) that were variously categorized as diarrhea and pneumonia by treatment-based diagnoses. The specificity of these lesions stood in stark contrast to the otherwise generic cause of death diagnoses derived from treatments. The findings from this study supported the hypothesis and highlighted the value of on-farm necropsies and laboratory-based diagnostics to (1) detect antemortem disease misclassifications, (2) provide detail regarding disease processes and mortality phenotypes, and (3) direct disease mitigation strategies. 相似文献

The 2015 European Union milk quota abolition initiated considerable expansion in the dairy sector in many European Union countries, most significantly in Ireland. However, this major production increase also had wider societal implications, such as negative environmental and animal welfare consequences. In this article, we used survey data of 441 Irish dairy farmers to assess farmers' attitudes toward the welfare of farmed animals and dairy calves, as well as the reputation of the Irish dairy sector. We also explored how expansion, breeding, calf management, and farmer characteristics relate to calf welfare outcomes (i.e., calf mortality, calf export, and premature culling). In relation to attitudes, farmers expressed a general concern toward animal welfare, while views toward dairy calves and industry reputation were mixed. We used Ward's linkage hierarchical cluster analysis to group farmers based on their attitudes. The cluster analysis revealed 3 distinct groups relating to high, medium, and low animal welfare concern. Herd expansion was negatively associated with being in a higher animal welfare concern cluster, whereas beef trait–focused breeding was positively associated with it. In relation to dairy calf welfare outcomes, our econometric analyses based on multiple regression and binary choice models revealed that expansion was positively associated with calf mortality, whereas improved breeding and calf management factors had a negative association. In addition, being in the high animal welfare concern cluster was negatively associated with calf mortality. Furthermore, breeding decisions were significantly associated with whether calves were exported, and being in the high animal welfare concern cluster was negatively associated with the probability that calves were sent for live export. Finally, farmers' breeding and calf management decisions were associated with premature culling of calves. Overall, this article revealed strategies worth promoting to improve dairy calf welfare, such as beef trait–focused breeding leading to greater dairy-beef integration. 相似文献

The majority of dairy heifer calves in the United States are destined to be dairy replacements. However, many dairy heifer and bull calves die before 6 mo of age. Of these calves, about 6% (more than 500,000 calves) die at birth or shortly after (i.e., currently termed “stillbirth”). An additional 6% of dairy heifers die during the preweaning period. Death loss in dairy calves is primarily due to stillbirths, failure to adapt to extrauterine life, and infectious disease processes. The reasons for preweaning heifer calf deaths caused by infectious diseases are generally categorized based on easily recognizable clinical signs such as digestive disease/scours or respiratory disease. Most causes of calf death can be mitigated by appropriate preventive care or well-tailored treatments, meaning that the typical death loss percentage could be decreased with better management. Producers could gather information on the circumstances near birth and at death if they had appropriate guidance on what details to record and monitor. This paper provides recommendations on data to collect at the time of birth (i.e., calf birth certificate data). The recording of these critical pieces of information is valuable in evaluating trends over time in morbidity and mortality events in dairy calves. Ideally, necropsy examination would substantially improve the identification of cause of death, but even without necropsy, attribution of cause of death can be improved by more carefully defining death loss categories in on-farm record systems. We propose a death loss categorization scheme that more clearly delineates causes of death. Recommendations are provided for additional data to be collected at the time of death. Recording and analyzing birth certificate and death loss data will allow producers and veterinarians to better evaluate associations between calf risk factors and death, with the goal of reducing dairy calf mortality. 相似文献

The objective of this cross-sectional herd-level study was to assess the association of calf management practices on source dairy farms with mortality risk on veal farms. From April to October 2016, 52 source dairy farms supplying male calves to 2 veal operations were visited once. A questionnaire was administered that covered all areas of calf management, calves between 1 and 10 d of age were examined using a standardized health scoring system, and blood was taken to evaluate passive transfer of immunoglobulins. The mortality risk for calves from each dairy farm was calculated based on the number of male calves sold from the dairy farm and that died during 2016 at the veal operations. The mean mortality risk was calculated for both veal farms and, based on the veal facility-adjusted mortality risk, dairy farms were classified as high- or low-mortality source farms. Using the information gathered at the 52 source dairy farms, a logistic regression model was used to assess factors associated with being a high-mortality source farm. Suppliers to veal farm 1 had a mean mortality risk of 9.6% and suppliers to veal farm 2 had a mean mortality risk of 4.2%. The lower mortality risk at veal farm 2 was partially influenced by a shorter period of observation. Of the 182 calves examined during the single visit to the source dairy farms, 41% of male calves and 29% of female calves had at least one identifiable health abnormality. The risk of failure of passive transfer on source dairy farms was low, with only 13% of calves tested having <10 mg of IgG/mL of serum. The subset of calves examined at the source dairy farm was not followed prospectively to the veal farms. Using a tube feeder or pail to feed colostrum, bedding male calves on wood shavings or chopped straw at the source dairy farm, and the herd veterinarian not routinely and actively inquiring about the health and performance of calves during regular herd visits were significantly associated with the farm being classified as a high-mortality source dairy farm. Checking the calving pen at an interval of every 3 h or more during the day was associated with a lower probability of being classified as a high-mortality source dairy farm. The results of this study suggest that there are management practices on the source farm that contribute to the risk of mortality on veal farms. 相似文献

We investigated the effect of social housing on the behavioral, intake, and physiological changes that occur at weaning for dairy calves fed milk ad libitum. These changes were evaluated during the weaning (d 40 to 48 of age) and postweaning (d 49 to 56 of age) stages. Twenty male Holstein calves were fed milk replacer ad libitum and weaned gradually by dilution over 9 d starting at d 40 of age. Calves were housed in pairs (10 calves) or individually (10 calves) from birth until the beginning of the postweaning phase, when all calves were paired. Feed and water intake were monitored daily. Feeding time was video-recorded, and blood β-hydroxybutyrate concentration was measured on alternate days beginning on d 40 and ending on d 56 of age. Electronic accelerometers continuously recorded standing and lying behavior for the 17-d study. Solid feed consumption increased by more than 5-fold over the weaning phase in all calves; during this phase pair-housed calves consumed more than twice (0.96 vs. 0.50 kg/d on d 48) that of the individually housed calves. Postweaning all calves rapidly increased their solid feed intake, and to a greater extent for previously individually housed calves, such that intake was similar between treatments by d 56. Free water intake was stable during weaning; however, a decrease (of 6.6 L) occurred in the constituent milk replacer water intake across this phase. As result, total water intake (free water + milk replacer water content) decreased (by 6.0 L) over the weaning phase between d 40 (14.9 L/d) and d 48 (8.9 L/d). On the first day postweaning (d 49), total water intake for all calves increased sharply (to 19.0 L/d) and then returned to a lower baseline (13.2 L/d) the next day (d 50), and slowly increased over the following week. During the weaning phase, feeding time and feeding rate increased with time for all calves, whereas pair-housed calves had greater feeding rates than individually housed calves (13.4 vs. 6.6 g of DM/min). After weaning, calves previously housed individually spent more time feeding in the early hours of the day than calves housed in pairs. Lying time and lying bout frequency decreased with calf age during the weaning period across treatments, and pair-housed calves tended to spend less time lying than individually housed calves (1,015 vs. 1,039 min/d) during this time period. Blood β-hydroxybutyrate increased across treatments over the weaning period, with the largest increase occurring between d 48 (0.05 mmol/L) and d 50 (0.2 mmol/L). These results show that calves alter their behavioral patterns during weaning and that housing calves in pairs may ease the transition from milk to solid feed. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the economic costs associated with different reasons for cow culling or on-farm mortality in a pasture-based seasonal system. A bioeconomic model was developed to quantify costs associated with the different farmer-recorded reasons and timing of cow wastage. The model accounted for the parity and stage of lactation at which the cows were removed as well as the consequent effect on the replacement rate and average age structure of the herd. The costs and benefits associated with the change were quantified, including animal replacement cost, cull salvage value, milk production loss, and the profitability of altered genetic merit based on industry genetic trends for each parity. The total cost of cow wastage was estimated to be NZ$23,628/100 cows per year (NZ$1 = US$0.69) in a pasture-based system. Of this total cost, NZ$14,300/100 cows worth of removals were for nonpregnancy and unknown reasons, and another NZ$3,631/100 cows was attributed to low milk production, mastitis, and udder problems. The total cost for cow removals due to farmer-recorded biological reasons (excluding unknown, production, and management-related causes) was estimated to be NZ$13,632/100 cows per year. Of this cost, an estimated NZ$10,286/100 cows was attributed to nonpregnancy, mastitis, udder problems, calving trouble, and injury or accident. There is a strong economic case for the pasture-based dairy industries to invest in genetic, herd health, and production management research focused on reducing animal wastage due to reproductive failure, mastitis, udder problems, injuries or accidents, and calving difficulties. 相似文献

Our objective in this study was to evaluate the reproductive performance of dairy heifers and cows inseminated with fresh or frozen sex-sorted semen (SS) in seasonal-calving pasture-based dairy herds. Ejaculates of 10 Holstein-Friesian bulls were split and processed to provide (1) fresh conventional semen at 3 × 106 sperm per straw (CONV); (2) fresh SS at 1 × 106 sperm per straw (SS-1M); (3) fresh SS semen at 2 × 106 sperm per straw (SS-2M); and (4) frozen SS at 2 × 106 sperm per straw (SS-FRZ). Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the effect of semen treatment and other explanatory variables on pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) in heifers (n = 3,214) and lactating cows (n = 5,457). In heifers, P/AI was greater for inseminations with CONV (60.9%) than with SS-FRZ (52.8%) but did not differ from SS-1M (54.2%) or SS-2M (53.5%). Cows inseminated with CONV had greater P/AI (48.0%) than cows inseminated with SS, irrespective of treatment (SS-1M, SS-2M, and S-FROZEN; 37.6, 38.9, and 40.6%, respectively). None of the SS treatments differed from each other with regard to P/AI in either heifers or cows. The relative performance of SS compared with CONV was also examined [i.e., relative P/AI = (SS P/AI)/(CONV P/AI) × 100]. Frozen SS achieved relative P/AI >84%. Bull affected P/AI in both heifers and cows, but no bull by semen treatment interaction was observed. In heifers, P/AI increased with increasing predicted transmitting ability for milk protein percentage. In cows, P/AI increased with increasing Economic Breeding Index (EBI) and with days in milk (DIM) at AI but decreased with increasing EBI milk subindex, parity and with DIM2. Cows in parity ≥5 had the lowest P/AI and differed from cows in parities 1, 2, or 3. Dispatch-to-AI interval of fresh semen did not affect P/AI in lactating cows, but a dispatch-to-AI interval by bull interaction was detected whereby P/AI was constant for most bulls but increased with greater dispatch-to-AI intervals for 2 bulls. In conclusion, frozen SS achieved greater P/AI relative to conventional semen than was previously reported in lactating cows. Fresh SS did not achieve greater P/AI than frozen SS, regardless of whether the sperm dose per straw was 1 × 106 or 2 × 106. A bull effect for all semen treatments, as well as a dispatch-to-AI interval by bull interaction for fresh semen, highlights the importance of using a large team of bulls for breeding management. 相似文献

Dairy calf weaning results in blood ketone concentrations in excess of mature rates of use and can result in excretion of ketones in urine representing a loss of energy. Lasalocid is frequently supplemented as an anticoccidial agent in calf starters; however, in mature ruminants it is known to alter molar ratios of ruminal volatile fatty acids (VFA). Effects of weaning transition and postweaning ionophore supplementation on body weight, dry matter (DM) intake, average daily gain (ADG), and blood concentrations of glucose, acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), lactate, pyruvate, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), VFA, insulin, and glucagon were examined using Jersey bull calves (n = 24) over 16 wk. Calves were blocked into groups of 2 according to birth date and weight and randomly assigned to receive either a commercial pelleted starter (control), or the same diet containing lasalocid (TRT; 83 mg/kg of DM). Calves were fed milk replacer from d 3 to 34 (d 3 to 20 = 454 g/d at 12% solids; d 21 to 34 = 568 g/d at 15% solids), from d 35 to 48 calves received both replacer (d 35 to 41 = 454 g/d; d 42 to 38 = 227 g/d) and free access to control or TRT starter, and from d 49 to 112 received ad libitum control or TRT. Body weight and jugular blood metabolite concentrations were measured and recorded weekly. Postweaning DM intake, average daily gain, and feed:gain did not differ between control and TRT calves. Glucose and NEFA concentrations did not differ between control and TRT, but declined with age. Insulin and glucagon concentrations did not differ between control and TRT, but glucagon concentrations increased with weaning. Total VFA significantly increased following introduction of solid feed at d 35 in both groups with an apparent 1-wk lag in TRT VFA increases compared with control. Jugular acetate and butyrate concentrations were greater in control calves than TRT calves during wk 7. Propionate concentrations did not differ between control and TRT at any time following weaning. Blood BHBA concentrations were greater in control than TRT during wk 8 and 9. Thus, consumption of starter supplemented with lasalocid delayed peak acetate and butyrate and lowered peak BHBA concentrations. However, supplementation at concentrations currently recommended for control of coccidiosis did not appear to be sufficient to enhance growth or efficiency during the wk 7 to 16 postweaning interval for this sample size. 相似文献

The aim of this study was 1) to analyze whether the parameters of feeding behavior automatically recorded by a feeding computer and weight gain are suitable for predicting the health status and rumen development of male dairy calves, and 2) to compare a conventional weaning method (end of milk provision at 12 wk of age, n = 23 calves) with a concentrate-dependent weaning method (with reduction in the milk amount depending on the consumption of concentrate, n = 24). The health status of each animal was evaluated daily by a scoring list (health score), and body temperature was measured automatically during each milk intake. In addition, the number of veterinary treatments per calf was recorded. Rumen development was assessed by measuring rumen papillae in 8 rumen areas after slaughter (n = 24, half of each treatment group). During the milk-feeding period, body temperature was elevated (≥39.5°C) on 40.8 and 43.2% of all days for calves on the concentrate-dependent weaning method and the conventional weaning method, respectively. Hay and concentrate intake (but not milk intake) and weight gain were clearly affected by health status. In addition, health score and the probability of being treated by a veterinarian were significantly related to decreases in concentrate consumption. During the milk-feeding period, increased body temperature, an increased number of veterinary treatments, and decreases in milk consumption were all associated with reduced weight gain. Calves on the concentrate-dependent weaning method were weaned at an average age of 76 d, which was significantly shorter than the age at the end of milk provision for conventionally fed calves (84 d). Weight gain and health status did not differ between treatment groups. Weight gain was positively associated with papillae length. A treatment effect on rumen development could not be found. We conclude that the concentrate-dependent weaning method allows a faster physiological development without any negative impact on rumen development, weight gain, or health status; we therefore recommend its use in practice. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate morbidity and mortality in preweaned dairy heifer calves based on different health, feeding, and management practices, as well as environmental factors. This study was conducted as part of the calf component of the National Animal Health Monitoring System's Dairy 2014 study, which included 104 dairy operations in 13 states. The calf component was an 18-mo longitudinal study focused on dairy heifer calves from birth to weaning; data were collected on 2,545 calves. The percentage morbidity for all calves enrolled in the study was 33.9%. Backward elimination model selection was used after univariate screening to determine which management practices and environmental factors significantly affected morbidity and mortality. The final morbidity model included birth weight, serum IgG concentration, ventilation type, and average temperature-humidity index (THI) during the preweaning period. After controlling for other independent variables in the model, calves born at a higher birth weight had a lower predicted risk of morbidity than calves with a lower birth weight. An increase in serum IgG concentration was associated with decreased morbidity. Calves housed in positive- or cross-ventilated systems had a 2.2 times higher odds of developing disease compared with calves housed in natural ventilation systems. Average THI during the preweaning period was inversely correlated with morbidity; as THI increased, the predicted morbidity risk decreased. The percent mortality for all calves enrolled in the study was 5.0%. The final mortality model included birth weight, serum IgG concentration, amount of fat/day in the liquid diet, and morbidity. After controlling for other independent variables in the model, calves born at a higher birth weight had a lower risk of mortality. An increase in serum IgG concentration decreased the risk of mortality. The odds of mortality were 3.1 times higher in calves fed ≤0.15 kg of fat/d in the liquid diet compared with calves fed ≥0.22 kg of fat/d. The odds of mortality were 4.7 times higher in calves that experienced any disease throughout the preweaning period than in calves with no disease. In summary, morbidity and mortality were both associated with birth weight and serum IgG concentration. Additionally, morbidity was associated with ventilation type and average monthly THI, and mortality was associated with amount of fat per day in the liquid diet and morbidity. 相似文献

Dairy calf weaning is associated with ketone concentrations that exceed the levels occurring in adults, and weaning represents a potential energy loss that may be mitigated by ionophore supplementation. To assess the effects of weaning and ionophore supplementation on net nutrient flux across portal-drained viscera (PDV) tissues in dairy calves, concentrations of glucose, acetoacetate (ACAC), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids, volatile fatty acids, lactate, pyruvate, insulin, and glucagon and PDV flux rates were determined in Jersey bull calves (n = 19) at 35, 56, 84, and 112 d of age. Calves were randomly assigned at birth to either a commercial pelleted starter without (CON) or with lasalocid (TRT; 83 mg/kg of dry matter). Calves were fed only milk replacer from d 3 to 34 (d 3 to 20 = 454 g/d; d 21 to 34 = 56 g/d). After blood sampling on d 35, calves received replacer (d 35 to 41 = 45 g/d; d 42 to 48 = 22 g/d) and had free access to the CON or TRT starter, and from d 49 to 112 they received CON or TRT ad libitum. Catheters were implanted in the portal vein and in the mesenteric vein and artery between d 21 and 28. Blood flow was measured by continuous infusion of p-aminohippurate into the mesenteric vein. Six serial samples were taken at 30-min intervals from the arterial and portal vein catheters simultaneously. Portal blood flow increased with age but did not differ between CON and TRT calves. Glucose was released preweaning and was extracted postweaning by PDV, but was not affected by ionophore. The portal flux of nonesterified fatty acids was not different from zero during any of the 4 sample ages. Fluxes of ACAC and BHBA in CON and TRT calves went from no measurable flux preweaning to a postweaning PDV release that peaked at d 84, but the d-84 release of ACAC and BHBA was lower in TRT calves. The portal flux of volatile fatty acids increased with age, and PDV release of both butyrate and propionate was lower at d 84 in TRT than in CON calves. However, TRT calves had a greater PDV release of lactate on d 84, partially compensating for the lower release of propionate. Glucagon was greater in CON than in TRT calves at d 84 and could be a response to the elevated ketogenesis observed in CON calves during this period. Changes in the metabolic profile and nutrient flux of transition calves were demonstrated in response to weaning and ionophore supplementation. Inclusion of an ionophore appeared to moderate alimentary output at a postweaning period (d 84) at which ketone concentrations have the potential to exceed the whole animal capacity for utilization. 相似文献

The objective of this prospective cohort study was to determine the effect of an abnormal fecal consistency score on weight gain and mortality in male Holstein calves and to identify risk factors associated with the occurrence of an abnormal fecal consistency score. This study enrolled 2,616 calves entering a calf-raising facility in Ontario, Canada, between January 2018 and December 2020. Fecal consistency scores were assigned twice daily for the first 28 d following arrival, where a score of 2, indicating runny consistency, and 3, indicating watery consistency, were classified as diarrhea. Severe diarrhea was classified by a score of 3. Serum total protein was measured upon arrival and the source of the calf (i.e., whether the calf came from a drover, local farm, or auction) was recorded. Body weight measurements were also collected at arrival and at 14, 56, and 77 d after arrival. Calf mortality and disease treatment during the first 77 d were recorded. On average, calves had diarrhea for 16% (4.51 d) of the first 28 d under observation, and severe diarrhea for 7% (1.87 d) of the 28 d under observation. Using a repeated measures linear regression model, we found the proportion of days with diarrhea significantly decreased weight gain at 14, 56, and 77 d following arrival. An increased proportion of days with diarrhea increased the risk of mortality, which was determined using a Cox proportional hazards model. We also found, using 2 Cox proportional hazards models, that a higher proportion of days with an abnormal fecal score increased the hazard of antibiotic treatment. With respect to factors associated with the occurrence of abnormal fecal consistency, we found that arrival weight and the source of calves were statistically significant predictors. Specifically, for every additional kilogram of body weight at arrival, the proportion of days with diarrhea decreased by 7%. With respect to source, calves from drovers had a higher proportion of days with diarrhea compared with those sourced directly from local dairy farms. Our results highlight the substantial influence the presence of abnormal fecal consistency has on short-term weight gain, mortality risk, and morbidity risk. We also demonstrate that diarrhea occurrence can be predicted using body weight at arrival and calf source. Further research should evaluate longer-term effects of diarrhea and better understand the effect of arrival weight on neonatal calf disease risk. 相似文献

The hypothesis was that calf birth weight (CBW) and a cow calf index [CCI; (calf weight/cow height at parturition) × 100] would be associated with calf and cow survivability, disease incidence, reproductive performance, and milk production. Data were collected in a prospective cohort study from one commercial dairy milking 2,800 Holsteins in upstate NY from March 2007 to August 2007. Animals were enrolled at parturition until 1,245 calvings were available for analysis. Data consisted of on-farm measurements of morbidity, mortality, and performance, and data were analyzed using a series of multivariable models including ANOVA and time-to-event analysis. A higher CBW and a higher CCI were associated with greater odds of lameness. Compared with the lowest quartile of CBW, the odds of the dam becoming subsequently lame increased as the CBW quartiles increased from 2 to 4; odds ratio = 1.5, 2.7, 3.6, respectively. Compared with the lowest quartile of CCI, the odds of the dam becoming subsequently lame increased as the CCI quartiles increased from 2 to 4; odds ratio = 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, respectively. Assistance during parturition was associated with higher CBW and with higher CCI. Calves born from assisted parturition had significantly higher CBW (CBW = 43.7 kg) and CCI (CCI = 31.4) compared with calves born from nonassisted parturition (CBW = 41.5 kg and CCI = 29.7). Neither CBW nor the CCI were associated with stillbirth incidence, calf mortality past 12 h of life, cow reproduction, or cow survival. We concluded that CBW, and especially the ratio of CBW to dam size, can be associated with some downstream effects, e.g., obstetrical assistance, lameness events, and milk production. 相似文献
