The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability of body condition score loss (BCSL) in early lactation and estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations among BCSL, body condition score (BCS), production, and reproductive performance. Body condition scores at calving and postpartum, mature equivalents for milk, fat and protein yield, days to first service, and services per conception were obtained from Dairy Records Management Systems in Raleigh, NC. Body condition score loss was defined as BCS at calving minus postpartum BCS. Heritabilities and correlations were estimated with a series of bivariate animal models with average-information REML. Herd-year-season effects and age at calving were included in all models. The length of the prior calving interval was included for all second lactation traits, and all nonproduction traits were analyzed with and without mature equivalent milk as a covariable. Initial correlations between BCS and BCSL were obtained using BCSL and BCS observations from the same cows. Additional genetic correlation estimates were generated through relationships between a group of cows with BCSL observations and a separate group of cows with BCS observations. Heritability estimates for BCSL ranged from 0.01 to 0.07. Genetic correlation estimates between BCSL and BCS at calving ranged from -0.15 to -0.26 in first lactation and from -0.11 to -0.48 in second lactation. Genetic correlation estimates between BCSL and postpartum BCS ranged from -0.70 to -0.99 in first lactation and from -0.56 to -0.91 in second lactation. Phenotypic correlation estimates between BCSL and BCS at calving were near 0.54, whereas phenotypic correlation estimates between BCSL and postpartum BCS were near -0.65. Genetic correlations between BCSL and yield traits ranged from 0.17 to 0.50. Genetic correlations between BCSL and days to first service ranged from 0.29 to 0.68. Selection for yield appears to increase BCSL by lowering postpartum BCS. More loss in BCS was associated with an increase in days to first service.  相似文献

Effects of retained fetal membranes on subsequent productive and reproductive performance were measured in a single Florida Holstein dairy herd (n = 216 retained fetal membranes and 208 normal cases). Mean performance was peak daily milk yield, 31.9 kg; 305-d milk yield, 6317 kg; days to first service, 60; days open, 115; and services per conception, 2.3. Yield was unaffected by retained fetal membranes; however, retention resulted in an increase of 4 d to first service, 19 d open, and .2 services per conception. Detrimental effects of parturitions in hot weather (July through September) compared with cool (December through February) were peak daily milk yield, 5.5 kg; 305-d milk yield, 512 kg; days to first service, 3; days open 39; and services per conception, .9. Interactions could not be detected between diagnosis (retained or normal) and season for any response. Sex of calf effects could not be detected for any response. Continued research to reduce occurrence of retained fetal membranes or to obviate its effects should lead to improved reproductive performance.  相似文献

The theory that feeding cows additional fat during early lactation will result in greater total lactational production and improved reproductive efficiency was evaluated using 305-d lactational data from 94 cows fed control diets and 96 cows fed additional dietary fat during wk 4 through 16 postpartum. Added fat in diets was supplied by oilseeds, either soybeans or sunflowers, in previously reported studies. Milk yield during wk 4 through 16 postpartum was 2.8% higher for cows fed added fat. Total lactational yield was increased 3.6% for cows fed additional fat in early lactation; 71% of the additional milk production occurred after discontinuing the feeding of additional fat. Percentages of milk fat and protein were lower when cows were fed added fat and remained lower for the remainder of the lactation. Days to first breeding, days open, and services per conception were not reduced by feeding added fat during early lactation. Milk production and persistency for the entire lactation were increased by feeding additional fat during early lactation, but changes in reproductive efficiency were not detected.  相似文献

Effects of management and environmental factors on reproductive performance were evaluated as part of a fertility experiment in four large commercial dairy herds. The herds were selected because they utilized routine herd health programs, kept complete reproduction records on all cows, were enrolled in Dairy Herd Improvement, and would follow the protocol of the experiment. Only data from first services following parturition were utilized, and conception was determined by rectal palpation. Information on over 2800 experimental breedings was collected during 13 mo. Percentage conception to first service was not affected by milk production during current or previous lactations. However, cows with higher production during current or previous lactations. However, cows with higher production during current or previous lactation had longer intervals to first service. Previous days dry did not affect conception or interval to first service significantly. Conception was less for cows with less than 50 days to first service (32%) than for cows with over 50 days to first service (49 to 57%). No differences were found among 10-day intervals to first service of over 50 days. Cows in third and later lactation had lower reproductive performance than cows in first or second lactation. Month of breeding did not affect conception significantly but did affect interval to first service. However, no seasonal trends were apparent. Differences among herds were significant for both conception and interval to first service.  相似文献

Data were first lactation production and reproduction records initiated from 1958 to 1981 in two experiment station Guernsey herds. Heritability estimates using paternal half sib groups were .24 +/- .12 for milk yield, .27 +/- .12 for fat yield, and .77 +/- .15 for fat percentage. Heritability estimates for reproductive traits ranged from .01 to .04 for number of services, service period, conception rate, and days open, but were higher for days in milk at first breeding (.12) and age at first calving (.13). Except for age at first calving, coefficients of additive genetic variation were larger for reproductive traits than for productive traits. Genetic correlations between measures of production and reproduction were moderate to large and antagonistic, except that the relationship between production and age at first calving was favorable. Breeding value estimates for milk yield and reproduction were negatively correlated for sires with above average breeding values for milk yield. Huge phenotypic variances for reproductive traits masked substantial additive genetic variation for these traits. When all things are considered it seems unwise to ignore reproductive performance in selection programs for dairy cattle.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration and describe the genetic relationship between MUN and reproductive performance and between MUN and diseases in Holsteins. Dairy Records Management Systems (Raleigh, NC) provided lactation data. The Danish Agricultural Advisory Center provided breeding value estimates for diseases. Infrared (IR) and wet chemistry (WC) data were analyzed separately. Heritabilities and genetic correlations for 2 different measures of MUN and reproductive performance were estimated with an animal model using ASREML. Heritabilities for MUN were estimated using all lactations combined (lactations 1 through 5) and separately for first lactation and second lactation. Genetic correlations with reproduction and health were estimated separately for parities 1 and 2. Herd-test-day or herd-year-season along with age at calving and days in milk were included as fixed effects in all models. Heritability estimates for all lactations combined were 0.15 for WC MUN and 0.22 for IR MUN. Genetic correlations between WC MUN and 2 measures of reproductive performance, days to first service, and first service conception were not different from zero. In contrast, the genetic correlation between WC MUN and days open of 0.21 in first lactation and 0.41 in second lactation indicated that higher WC MUN values were associated with increased days open. Correlations among estimated breeding values for MUN and estimated breeding values for Danish diseases identified no significant relationships. Although the results of this study indicate that heritable variation for MUN exists, the inability to identify significant genetic relationships with several measures of disease or reproductive performance appears to limit the value of MUN in selection for disease resistance and improved reproduction.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to use survival analysis to assess the relationship between reproduction traits and functional longevity of Canadian dairy cattle. Data consisted of 1,702,857; 67,470; and 33,190 Holstein, Ayrshire, and Jersey cows, respectively. Functional longevity was defined as the number of days from first calving to culling, death, or censoring; adjusted for the effect of milk yield. The reproduction traits included calving traits (calving ease, calf size, and calf survival) and female fertility traits (number of services, days from calving to first service, days from first service to conception, and days open). The statistical model was a Weibull proportional hazards model and included the fixed effects of stage of lactation, season of production, the annual change in herd size, and type of milk recording supervision, age at first calving, effects of milk, fat, and protein yields calculated as within herd-year-parity deviations for each reproduction trait. Herd-year-season of calving and sire were included as random effects. Analysis was performed separately for each reproductive trait. Significant associations between reproduction traits and longevity were observed in all breeds. Increased risk of culling was observed for cows that required hard pull, calved small calves, or dead calves. Moreover, cows that require more services per conception, a longer interval between first service to conception, an interval between calving to first service greater than 90 d, and increased days open were at greater risk of being culled.  相似文献

For the effects of voltages on health and reproduction, 40 cows in second to fifth lactation were divided into four groups of 10. These included a control group that was not subjected to voltages and three treatment groups that were given either 1, 2, or 4 V at the water bowl. Cows in the treatment groups were exposed during the entire lactation to voltage whenever they drank. Voltages did not sufficiently affect milk yield. General health parameters studied were mastitis, hoof problems, and changes in body weight. Reproductive and calving parameters examined were days to first breeding, days open, services per conception, response to PGF2 alpha, calving intervals, visible abortion, and calves born dead. Voltages did not significantly influence cow health or reproductive performance.  相似文献

Reproductive traits of heifers and primiparous cows from a long-term selection project were analyzed to determine correlated response to single-trait selection for milk yield. Data were from 1056 daughters (765 selection, 291 control) of 37 bulls (17 selection, 20 control). Traits in heifers were ages at first observed estrus and at first breeding, services to conception, interval from first service to conception, and length of first gestation. Traits in primiparous cows were ages at first calving and at first breeding, after calving; services to conception; length of second gestation; and intervals from calving to first observed estrus, to first breeding, and to conception, from first service to conception, and from first to second calving. Analyses for services to conception in heifers and primiparous cows were categorical using models containing genetic group and generation. Analyses of other traits were by linear mixed models using fixed effects of genetic group, generation within group, and year-season of birth. Sires were assumed random and nested within genetic group. The mean square for sires within group was used to test for group differences. No significant differences were found between genetic groups in traits measured in heifers; however, the interval from first service to conception approached significance (control superior). In primiparous cows, differences between genetic groups were significant for the intervals of calving to first breeding and calving to conception and for length of second gestation (control superior). For other traits, reproductive performance of the control was better but not significantly different from that of the selected group. Reproductive performance should be monitored during selection for high milk yield.  相似文献

Records representing 19,266 Holstein cows from Arizona DHIA data over a 5-yr period were analyzed to determine the effects of season and lactation number on milk production and reproduction. Seasons were winter (December, January, and February), spring (March, April, and May), summer (June, July, and August), and fall (September, October, and November). Traits analyzed by least squares ANOVA were 305-d FCM, complete lactation milk, calving interval, and services per conception. All sources of variation were significant except the interaction between lactation number and season of calving for complete lactation milk. Milk production was depressed for cows calving in summer and fall. First lactation cows had lowest milk production, and highest production occurred in either lactation 4 or 5. Cows calving in spring and summer had reduced reproductive performance, as measured by calving interval and services per conception. First lactation cows had lowest values for both reproductive traits. Previous days dry was negatively related to milk production for spring calvings but was positively related for all other seasons. Cows with higher milk production had reduced reproductive performance. Partial regression coefficients for calving interval and services per conception were 12 d and .25 services per conception per 1000 kg of 305-d FCM, respectively. Despite the negative effects of thermal stress, milk production and fertility in this study were not depressed as severely as in previous research reported from Arizona. Calving schedules may be adjusted to minimize the adverse effect of heat stress.  相似文献

Records from Florida Agricultural Experiment Station dairy herd for 1144 heifers freshening from 1959 to 1979 were studied to evaluate effects of age and problems at parturition on subsequent yield and reproduction. Statistical analysis was by method of ordinary least squares analysis of variance; five measures of reproduction, survival to second lactation, and 15 measures of yield were studied. Mean first parturition age was 25.8 mo with 40% of individuals less than or equal to 23 mo; survival to second parturition was 67%. No effects of age at first parturition were detected on survival, postpartum reproductive performance, or milk composition other than lactose-mineral, chloride, and acidity percentages; effects on yield were similar to previous reports. Stillbirth did not affect subsequent reproductive performance but was associated with decreased milk yield: 181 kg or 5.2% of overall mean. Milk yield was depressed by 239 kg for retained fetal membrane, 173 kg for dystocia, and 98 kg for metritis; milk composition essentially was unaltered. Heritability of postpartum days to first estrus was .14; estimates were 0 for days to first service, days open, and calving interval. Additional research is needed on interrelationships of gestation length with subsequent yield and reproduction and in alleviating detrimental effects of problems at parturition.  相似文献

Various factors influencing reproduction of 307 Holstein cows were evaluated. Sources of variation of several measures were estrous certainty, time of day of detected estrus and insemination, method of thawing semen, ease of cervix penetration, presence of clear mucus at insemination, service number, service sire, inseminator, age of cow, maximum ambient temperature on the service date, and milk yield. Interval to first service of older cows was longer than of younger cows and shorter for cows with higher milk yield. Conception rate was higher for inseminations before noon than after noon and tended to be lower at inseminations when milk yield was at the extremes (low or high). Rate of conception was similar for cows whether inseminated at early or later postpartum intervals. More services were required by cows that were inseminated when milk yield was at the extremes (low or high). Fewer days open were associated with fewer total services and younger age at conception. Cows inseminated with semen thawed in hot (65 degrees C, 7 to 10 s) or warm (35 degrees C, 30 s) water conceived earlier postpartum than did those inseminated with semen thawed in the cow. Submitting cows for insemination after detection of standing estrus, mounting activity, or less certain symptoms of estrus had no adverse effect on fertility or days open.  相似文献

From 10 +/- 3.5 d after parturition to 149 +/- 3.5 d of lactation, 146 cows (109 Holstein and 37 Ayrshires) were fed either a 15 or 20% crude protein diet of 45% sorghum silage and 55% concentrate. Milk production was enhanced by the 20% protein diet, but percentage of milk fat and protein were unchanged. Average daily intake of DM was unaffected by diet. Actual decreases in body weight and condition were small, although cows on 15% protein lost more condition. Concentration of plasma urea nitrogen increased rapidly during the first 4 wk of the experiment with cows on the 20% protein diet maintaining a 10 mg/dl advantage after the 4th wk on experiment. Diet did not affect the postpartum interval to first normal corpus luteum and standing estrus. Cows were inseminated artificially between 55 and 145 d post-calving with one freeze batch of semen from one bull of each appropriate breed mainly by one inseminator. Overall, days open, services per conception, and percentage cows pregnant on experiment were 80, 1.40, and 85, respectively. Concentration of protein in the diet did not affect these reproductive traits. There was no conflict between the amount of dietary protein provided for lactation and reproduction in this experiment.  相似文献

A comparative cohort study of reproductive performance in organic and conventional dairy husbandry was conducted using longitudinal data from the Norwegian National Board of Animal Production Recording from January 1, 1994 to December 31, 1996. The present study is the first study comparing reproductive efficiency in organic and conventional husbandry in which characteristics such as herd size, breeding season, milk yield, parity, breed, use of artificial insemination (AI), and geographical distribution were taken into account. The organically managed cohort comprised 998 lactation periods, and the conventionally managed cohort comprised 3016 lactation periods. Both groups were similar in herd size and geographical distribution. The following reproduction variables were studied: days open, calving interval, calving to first AI interval, calving to last AI interval, and AI per cow. No consistent difference in reproductive performance was found between the cohorts before adjustments were made for milk yield, breeding season, service, and parity. After inclusion of these independent variables in the repeated measures, mixed-model analyses, reproductive efficiency of organically managed dairy cows was impaired compared with those under conventional management. In organic dairy farming, breeding efficiency was difficult to maintain in cows bred during winter. Organic husbandry proved more efficient than did conventional husbandry in converting roughage into milk. Furthermore, the average multiparity percentage was higher in organically managed cows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether organically complexed Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn would improve the reproductive performance and milk and milk component production in lactating dairy cows that began receiving bovine somatotropin in the ninth week of lactation. Holstein (n = 50) and Jersey (n = 10) cows were blocked by breed, lactation number, and incidence of retained fetal membranes. Two diets assigned within blocks and fed from parturition until 154 d of lactation were control or control supplemented daily with 26 mg of Co as Co glucoheptonate, 125 mg of Cu as Cu-Lys, 199 mg of Mn as Mn-Met, and 359 mg of Zn as Zn-Met. Cows were fitted with electronic pressure-sensing devices in the second week of lactation for detection of estrus. Ovarian structures were determined via transrectal ultrasonography at 7-d intervals from parturition until observation of the first corpus luteum. Blood samples were taken at 7-d intervals and analyzed for plasma concentrations of progesterone, insulin, and urea nitrogen. Onset of luteal activity was identified by progesterone concentrations > or = 1 ng/ml. Retained fetal membranes increased days to first estrus (detected via electronic estrous detection), first luteal activity, and first corpus luteum in control cows but not in supplemented cows. Days to first observed estrus were greater for control cows than for supplemented cows. Days to first service, days open, days from first service to conception, services per conception, milk yield, milk components, and somatic cell counts were similar for control and supplemented cows. Supplementation with complexed trace minerals effectively reduced days to first estrus.  相似文献

Fifty-four multiparous Holsteins were utilized to determine the effect of dietary P on ovarian activity and reproductive performance. Cows were assigned at calving to diets containing 0.35 or 0.47% P. Ovarian activity was monitored 3 times weekly by ultrasonography, beginning 10 d after parturition until the end of a 60-d voluntary waiting period. After this period, cows were synchronized and bred using the Ovsynch protocol. During wk 2 of lactation, the number of small (3 to 5 mm in diameter) and large (>9 mm) follicles was similar between groups, but the number of medium (6 to 9 mm) follicles was lower for 0.35% P than for 0.47% P (1.2 vs. 1.9). Dietary P did not affect the number of days to first postpartum ovulation or the diameter of dominant and ovulating follicles. The multiple ovulation rate and the proportion of cows that were anovulatory or developed follicular cysts did not differ between groups. Dietary P amount did not influence corpus luteum development or blood progesterone concentration during the voluntary waiting period. The first service conception rate and pregnancy loss from 30 to 60 d after breeding were not affected. The overall pregnancy rate during the first 200 d of lactation (60.9 and 60.0%) and the number of services per pregnancy (2.1 and 1.9) did not differ between groups. Serum inorganic P was elevated from 6 to 7 mg/dL during the first 3 mo postpartum as dietary P was increased. Fecal P content measured during the first 16 wk of lactation averaged 0.63 and 0.89%, 29% lower for the 0.35% P group. Mean milk yield during the first 40 wk of lactation did not differ, averaging 40.5 and 39.0 kg/d for the 0.35 and 0.47% P groups, respectively. Overall, varying dietary P from 0.35 to 0.47% did not affect postpartum ovarian activity, reproductive performance, or milk production.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate relationships between reproductive traits in heifers and cows and yield traits for Holsteins in Japan. Insemination and lactation records for cows calved between 1990 and 2003 in Hokkaido region were obtained. Age at first service, age at conception, and conception rate for first service were calculated for heifers. Days from calving to first service, days open, and conception rate for first service were calculated for first- and second-parity cows. The yield traits used were 305-d milk, fat, and protein yields. A threshold animal model was applied for the conception rate for first service, and a linear animal model was applied for the other traits. Single-trait and 2-trait genetic analyses were performed by the Bayesian method using Gibbs sampling. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.027 to 0.051 for conception rate for first service, and from 0.074 to 0.128 for the other reproductive traits. If the relationships of other traits were not considered, days from calving to first service was favorable to genetic selection for reproductive traits because of relatively high heritability and because it can be available earlier than the days open. Genetic correlations among reproductive traits were high, especially in cows. The genetic correlations between reproductive traits for heifers and those for cows were lower than the genetic correlations between reproductive traits for first parity and those of second parity, suggesting that reproductive traits for heifers should be evaluated separately from reproductive traits for cows. Genetic correlations between yield and reproductive traits in cows were antagonistic. In contrast, genetic correlations between reproductive traits for heifers and yield traits were slightly desirable. Depending on the reporting rate of insemination records for heifers and the results of investigations for relationships with productive maturity, selection by reproductive traits for heifers will enable the improvement of reproductive performance without a loss in genetic progress for yield traits.  相似文献

This study investigated associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the leptin, leptin receptor, and neuropeptide Y (NPY) genes with growth, milk production, and fertility traits. Holstein Friesian heifers from 19 UK dairy farms were recruited at birth, providing an initial population of 509. Animals were monitored until they either reached the end of their second lactation or were culled. Size (weight, height, length, girth) was measured at 1, 6, and 15 mo to assess growth traits. Heifer fertility was assessed by recording age at service, age at conception, age at first calving, and number of services. Cow fertility was assessed by recording days from calving to service and conception, services per conception, percentage of animals in calf at 100 d after calving and the calving interval in each lactation. Milk production was recorded as days in milk, total milk per lactation, 305-d yield, milk per day, and peak yield. Mixed model analyses revealed that leptin SNP were associated with early skeletal growth (height, A1457G; length, A59V), fertility (UASMS1, UASMS2, A1457G, A59V) and milk production (A59V). The leptin receptor SNP (T945M) was only weakly associated with milk per day and days to first service. The NPY SNP (NPY1) was associated with the prevalence of the animal being in calf 100 d after calving and 305-d milk yield in the first lactation. The association of leptin SNP with fertility traits in heifers, in addition to lactating cows, suggests that some effects on fertility are direct and not necessarily mediated via altered tissue mobilization. In accord with this, other work has shown that leptin can affect oocyte quality and early embryo development. These results support the use of leptin SNP to inform marker-assisted selection in dairy cows.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for fertility and production traits in the Brown Swiss population reared in the Alps (Bolzano-Bozen province, Italy). Fertility indicators were interval from parturition to first service, interval from first service to conception (iFC), and interval from parturition to conception, either expressed as days and as number of potential 21-d estrus cycles (cPF, cFC, and cPC, respectively); number of inseminations to conception; conception rate at first service; and non-return rate at 56 d post-first service. Production traits were peak milk yield, lactation milk yield, lactation length, average lactation protein percentage, and average lactation fat percentage. Data included 71,556 lactations (parities 1 to 9) from 29,582 cows reared in 1,835 herds. Animals calved from 1999 to 2007 and were progeny of 491 artificial insemination bulls. Gibbs sampling and Metropolis algorithms were implemented to obtain (co)variance components using both univariate and bivariate censored threshold and linear sire models. All of the analyses accounted for parity and year-month of calving as fixed effects, and herd, permanent environmental cow, additive genetic sire, and residual as random effects. Heritability estimates for fertility traits ranged from 0.030 (iFC) to 0.071 (cPC). Strong genetic correlations were estimated between interval from parturition to first service and cPF (0.97), and interval from parturition to conception and cPC (0.96). The estimate of heritability for cFC (0.055) was approximately double compared with iFC (0.030), suggesting that measuring the elapsed time between first service and conception in days or potential cycles is not equivalent; this was also confirmed by the genetic correlation between iFC and cFC, which was strong (0.85), but more distant from unity than the other 2 pairs of fertility traits. Genetic correlations between number of inseminations to conception, conception rate at first service, non-return rate at 56 d post-first service, cPF, cFC, and cPC ranged from 0.07 to 0.82 as absolute value. Fertility was unfavorably correlated with production; estimates ranged from −0.26 (cPC with protein percentage) to 0.76 (cPC with lactation length), confirming the genetic antagonism between reproductive efficiency and milk production. Although heritability for fertility is low, the contemporary inclusion of several reproductive traits in a merit index would help to improve performance of dairy cows.  相似文献

Path analysis was used to model the direct and indirect relationships among age, previous lactation yield or estimated transmitting ability for milk, body weight, days dry, reproductive disorders, milk fever, mastitis, reproductive performance, current milk yield, and culling. Prospective data were from 784 primiparous and 2,066 multiparous Holstein lactations from 33 herds. Heifers that were older, of lighter weight, or who had lower estimated transmitting ability for milk had more problems, less milk, and poorer survival. Dystocia in heifers had several detrimental consequences including 2.9 to 4 times more retained placenta, metritis, and culling and +7.4 d more to first service. Cystic ovaries were associated directly with 376 kg greater milk yield and with a 16.5-d delay in first service. Failure to conceive at first service and mastitis increased risk of culling 5.2 to 10 times. In multiparous cows, milk fever increased risk of reproductive disorders by 1.6 to 4.2 times and indirectly contributed to poor breeding performance and increased culling. Risk of culling was increased 2.1 to 3.7 times directly by mastitis and dystocia and by poor breeding performance.  相似文献
