Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) and fully interpenetrating polymer network (full‐IPN) hydrogels composed of alginate and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared with γ‐ray irradiation. The semi‐IPN hydrogels were prepared through the irradiation of a mixed solution composed of alginate and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer to simultaneously achieve the polymerization and self‐crosslinking of NIPAAm. The full‐IPN hydrogels were formed through the immersion of the semi‐IPN film in a calcium‐ion solution. The results for the swelling and deswelling behaviors showed that the swelling ratio of semi‐IPN hydrogels was higher than that of full‐IPN hydrogels. A semi‐IPN hydrogel containing more alginate exhibited relatively rapid swelling and deswelling rates, whereas a full‐IPN hydrogel showed an adverse tendency. All the hydrogels with NIPAAm exhibited a change in the swelling ratio around 30–40°C, and full‐IPN hydrogels showed more sensitive and reversible behavior than semi‐IPN hydrogels under a stepwise stimulus. In addition, the swelling ratio of the hydrogels continuously increased with the pH values, and the swelling processes were proven to be repeatable with pH changes. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) gels with N,N‐methylene bisacrylamde (BIS) as crosslinker were prepared by free radical polymerization method at the temperature of 35°C, which was just around the lower critical solution temperature (LSCT) of the hydrogels. The gels synthesized at 35°C demonstrated strong swellability and fast responseability when compared with the gels synthesized at the temperature of 0 and 18°C (below the LCST) and 50 and 80°C (above the LSCT). The response rate and swelling behavior of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) gels was investigated and characterized by the temperature‐dependent swelling ratio and swelling and deswelling kinetics. The swelling behavior of the gels indicated that the synthesis temperature was the main factor when the swellability concerned and also had effect on the responseability of the resulting hydrogels. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) polymer gels and interpenetrating network (IPN) polymer gels with thermosensitivity were prepared by introducing a biodegradable polymer, chitosan, into the N-isopropyacrylamide (PNIPAAm) gel system. The swelling behavior, temperature sensitivity, pH sensitivity, gel strength, and drug-release behavior of PNIPAAm/chitosan semi-IPN and IPN hydrogels were investigated. The results indicated that the NIPAAm/chitosan semi-IPN and IPN hydrogels exhibited pH and temperature-sensitivity behavior and could slow drug release and diffusion from the gels. From the stress–strain curves of the hydrogels, the compression moduli of IPN gels containing crosslinked chitosan were higher than those of semi-IPN gels. This is because IPN gels have a more compact structure. The morphology of PNIPAAm/chitosan hydrogels was also investigated. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel dual temperature‐ and pH‐sensitive poly(acrylic acid‐co‐N‐isopropylacrylamide), AA/NIPAAm, hydrogels were successfully prepared by chemical crosslinking with crosslinkers. Copolymers of AA/NIPAAm were crosslinked in the presence of different mol % of N,N‐methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) and melamine triacrylamide (MAAm) as crosslinkers by bulk radical polymerization. The resultant xerogels were characterized by extracting the soluble fractions and measuring the equilibrium water content. Lower critical solution transition temperatures (LCST) were measured by DSC. The properties of crosslinked AA/NIPAAm series are evaluated in terms of compositional drift of polymerization, heterogeneous crosslinking, and chemical structure of the relevant components. Soluble fractions of the crosslinked networks were reduced by varying the MAAm and MBA concentrations. The influence of environmental conditions such as temperature and pH on the swelling behavior of these polymeric gels was investigated. The swelling behaviors of the resulting gels show pH sensitivity. The prepared MAAm type AA/NIPAAm hydrogels exhibited a more rapid deswelling rate than MBA type AA/NIPAAm hydrogels in ultra pure water in response to abrupt changes from 20°C to 50°C. The results of this study provide valuable information regarding the development of dual stimuli‐sensitive hydrogels with fast responsiveness. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable cross-linker N-maleyl chitosan (N-MACH) was synthesized with chitosan (CS) and maleic anhydride (MA) by acylation. With N-MACH cross-linker, a series of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-itaconic acid) [P(NIPAAm-co-IA)] hydrogels were prepared, and their pH-and temperature-responsive behaviors, water contents, swelling/deswelling kinetics were investigated. By alternating the NIPAAm/IA weight ratios, hydrogels had the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) changed from 33 to 38 °C, whereas cross-linking density did not affect the VPTT apparently. The water content of hydrogels was controlled by the monomer weight ratios of NIPAAm/IA, swelling media, and the cross-linking density. The results of the influence of pH value on the swelling behaviors showed that the minimum swelling ratios of the hydrogels appeared in neutral buffer solution, which was attributed to chemical composition of the hydrogels and the swelling media. In the swelling/deswelling kinetics, all the dried hydrogels exhibited fast swelling within 480 min and fast deswelling within 20 min, which was independent of the content of IA and cross-linker.  相似文献

This work refers to the synthesis and characterization of thermosensitive hydrogels based on interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and calcium alginate in the form of films. The influence of the crosslinking degree of PNIPAAm and alginate content on thermal, swelling, mechanical, and morphological properties of hydrogels is investigated in detail. Characterization of pure PNIPAAm hydrogels and IPN hydrogels was performed by FTIR, DSC, DMA, and SEM. In addition, the studies of equilibrium swelling behavior as well as swelling, deswelling, and reswelling kinetics are performed. The results obtained imply the benefits of synthesizing IPNs based on PNIPAAm and calcium alginate over pure PNIPAAm hydrogels. The presence of calcium alginate contributes to the improvement of mechanical properties, the deswelling rate of hydrogels, and the network porosity, without altering the thermosensitivity of PNIPAAm significantly. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of N‐isopropylacrylamide/[[3‐(methacryloylamino)propyl]dimethy(3‐sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide] (NIPAAm/MPSA) copolymer hydrogels were prepared with various compositions. Swelling of the hydrogels in water, aqueous NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 solutions was studied. NIPAAm/MPSA hydrogels have a higher degree of swelling in water and salt solutions than that of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm). Also, NIPAAm/MPSA hydrogels are more salt resistant when deswelling in salt solutions. For <7 mol % MPSA, the formed hydrogels retain both temperature reversibility and high swelling. A higher content of MPSA (>11 mol %) leads to better salt resistance but a decrease in thermosensitivity. The swelling of NIPAAm/MPSA hydrogel in 0.05M NaCl is non‐Fickian. In NaCl and KCl aqueous solutions, the zwitterionic hydrogels do not show obvious antipolyelectrolyte swelling behavior, whereas in divalent salt CaCl2 and MgCl2 solutions, the swelling ability of NIPAAm/MPSA hydrogels is enhanced at low salt concentration, then decreases with further increase in salt concentration. The lower critical solution temperatures of NIPAAm/MPSA hydrogels are also affected by concentrated salt solution. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 88: 2032–2037, 2003  相似文献

In this study, semi-IPN chitosan/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) hydrogels have been prepared via in situ UV-photo-crosslinking of N-isopropylacrylamide monomer using poly(ethylene glycol)-co-poly(ε-caprolactone) (PEG-co-PCL) macromer as a crosslinker in the presence of chitosan. Swelling properties of the resultant hydrogels were studied by investigating pH- and temperature dependence of equilibrium swelling ratio and oscillatory swelling–deswelling kinetics. It was found that semi-IPN hydrogels responded to both temperature and pH changes, and such stimuli-responsiveness was rapidly reversible. The rheological measurements demonstrated that the incorporation of chitosan greatly improved the mechanical strength of the hydrogels prepared. The release profiles of bovine serum albumin (BSA) from the hydrogels were also evaluated. The results showed that the release rate of BSA was higher in pH 2.0 buffer solution than in pH 7.4 buffer solution at 37 °C. Such double-sensitive hydrogels have the potential to use as smart carriers for drug delivery systems.  相似文献

A new strategy was used to prepare a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN)–like poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) polymeric hydrogel, consisting of either low (2300) or high (33,000) molecular weight linear PNIPAAm chains and the crosslinked PNIPAAm network. The properties of the resulting PNIPAAm hydrogels were characterized by DSC and SEM as well as their swelling ratios at various temperatures, the deswelling in hot water (48°C), and the oscillating shrinking–swelling properties within small temperature cycles. It was found that the deswelling rate of these semi‐IPN–like PNIPAAm hydrogels was improved if the molecular weight and/or composition of the linear PNIPAAm chains within the semi‐IPN–like PNIPAAm hydrogels were increased. This improved deswelling rate was attributed to the fast response nature of the linear PNIPAAm chains and the increased pore number in the matrix network, which provided numerous water channels for the water to diffuse out during the deswelling process at a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel thermosensitive macroporous poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐co‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)‐co‐poly (ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) hydrogels were synthesized via in situ free radical polymerization. Poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGDAc) and poly(ε‐caprolactone diacrylate) (PCLDAc) were prepared as macrocrosslinkers. All compounds were investigated by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) results showed the lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) of the gels were at around 31°C. The macroporous gels not only had considerable swelling ratios, but also exhibited rapid swelling kinetics and response sensitivity. Above mentioned hydrogels showed a remarkable oscillatory swelling–deswelling transition, making them have potential application in long‐term drug delivery. POLYM. ENG. Environmentally sensitive hydrogels responsive to various stimuli such as temperature, pH, ionic strength of the medium and the solvent were prepared by using N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), acrylamide (AAm) and monomers that have various number of carboxylic acid (XA) functionality using N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide (Bis) as crosslinker. Hydrogels were prepared via free radical polymerization reaction in aqueous solution. P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) and p(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/XA hydrogels that contain monoprotic crotonic acid (CA) exhibit a lover critical solution temperature (LCST) at 28°C, whereas p(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/IA (IA:itaconic acid), and P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/ACA (ACA:acotonic acid) hydrogels exhibit a lover critical solution temperature at 30.7°C and 34.4°C, respectively. Spectroscopic and thermal analyses were performed for the structural and thermal characterizations of the prepared hydrogel. The swelling experiments as equilibrium swelling percentages by gravimetrically were carried out in different solvents, at different solutions temperature, pH, and ionic strengths to determine their effects on swelling characteristic of hydrogels. To achieve the injectable hydrogel system in order to improve bone regeneration by locally delivering a protein drug including bone morphogenetic proteins, thermo‐responsive injectable hydrogels composed of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and vinyl phosphonic acid (VPAc) were prepared. The P(NIPAAm‐co‐VPAc) hydrogels were also biomineralized by urea‐mediation method to create functional polymer hydrogels that deliver the protein drug and mimic the bone extracellular matrix. The loosely cross‐linked P(NIPAAm‐co‐VPAc) hydrogels were pliable and fluid‐like at room temperature and could be injected through a small‐diameter aperture. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of P(NIPAAm‐co‐VPAc) hydrogel was influenced by the monomer ratio of NIPAAm/VPAc and the hydrogel with a 96/4 molar ratio of NIPAAm/VPAc exhibited an LCST of ~34.5°C. Water content was influenced by temperature, NIPAAm/VPAc monomer ratio, and biomineralization; however, all hydrogels maintained more than about 77% of the water content even at 37°C. In a cytotoxicity study, the P(NIPAAm‐co‐VPAc) and biomineralized P(NIPAAm‐co‐VPAc) hydrogels did not significantly affect cell viability. The loading content of bovine serum albumin in hydrogel, which was used as a model drug, gradually increased with the amount of VPAc in the hydrogel owing to the ionic interaction between VPAc groups and BSA molecules. In addition, the release behavior of BSA from the P(NIPAAm‐co‐VPAc) hydrogels was mainly influenced by the drug loading content, water content, and biomineralization of the hydrogels. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(propylene) (PP) membrane grafted with poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), which is known to have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at around 32°C, was prepared by the plasma‐induced graft polymerization technique. Graft polymerization of PNIPAAm onto a PP membrane was confirmed by microscopic attenuated total reflection/Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The grafting yield of PNIPAAm increased with the concentration of N‐isopropylacrylamide monomer and the reaction time of graft polymerization. The average pore size of the PP membrane also affected the grafting yield. From the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) measurement, we observed a morphological change in the PP‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane under wet conditions at 25°C below LCST. The permeability of water through the PP‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane was controlled by temperature. The PP‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane (PN05 and PN10) exhibited higher water permeability (Lp) than the original PP substrate membrane below LCST. As the temperature increased to above LCST, Lp gradually decreased. In addition, the graft yield of PNIPAAm and the average pore size of the PP substrate influenced water permeability. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amino semitelechelic poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was prepared by radical polymerization with aminoethanethiol hydrochloride as a chain‐transfer agent. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels, composed of alginate and amine‐terminated PNIPAAm, were prepared by crosslinking with calcium chloride. From the swelling behaviors of semi‐IPNs at various pH's and Fourier transform infrared spectra at high temperatures, the formation of a polyelectrolyte complex was confirmed from the reaction between carboxyl groups in alginate and amino groups in modified PNIPAAm. Semi‐IPN hydrogels reached an equilibrium swelling state within 24 h. The water state in hydrogels, investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, showed that sample CAN55 [alginate/PNIPAAm (w/w) = 50/50] exhibited the lowest equilibrium water content and free water content among the hydrogels tested, which was attributed to its more compact structure compared to other samples and the high content of interchain bonding within the hydrogels. Alginate/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels exhibited a reasonable sensitivity to the temperature, pH, and ionic strength of swelling medium. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, pH‐ and temperature‐responsive hydrogels based on linear sodium alginate (SA) and crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared by semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) technique. The dually responsive hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, DSC, and SEM, and their temperature‐ and pH‐responsive behaviors were investigated by measuring equilibrium swelling ratios and pulsatile swelling experiments. The results showed that these hydrogels underwent volume phase transition at around 33°C irrespective of the pH value of the medium, but their pH sensitivity was evident only below their volume phase transition temperature. Under basic conditions, the swelling ratios of SA/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels were greater than that of pure PNIPAAm hydrogel and increased with increasing SA content incorporated into the hydrogels, but the case was inverse under acidic conditions. The pulsatile swelling experiments indicated that the higher the SA content in SA/PNIPAAm semi‐IPN hydrogels, the faster the response rate to both pH and temperature change. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm)‐graft‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) hydrogels crosslinked by poly(?‐caprolactone) diacrylate were prepared, and their microstructures were investigated. The swelling/deswelling kinetics and compression strength were measured. The relationship between the structure and properties of hydrogel are discussed. It was found that the PEO comb‐type grafted structure reduced the thermosensitivity and increased the compression strength. The addition of poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) accelerated the deswelling rate of the hydrogels. Meanwhile, the entanglement of PCL chains restrained the further swelling of the network of gels. The PCL crosslinking agent and PEO comb‐type grafted structure made the behavior of the hydrogels deviate from the rubber elasticity equations. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PNIPAAm/PEG-DA) microgels were used as an additive during the polymerization and/or crosslinking of PNIPAAm hydrogels to improve their thermosensitive properties. The influence of this additive on the property of resulting PNIPAAm hydrogels was investigated and characterized. The interior morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that microgel impregnated PNIPAAm hydrogels have tighter and constrained porous network structures, although large cavities of 30-40 μm in diameter, occupied by the microgels were sporadically distributed in this constrained network. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies did not show apparent difference in lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between normal and microgel-impregnated PNIPAAm hydrogels. The incorporating of PNIPAAm/PEG-DA microgels, however, significantly improved mechanical properties of modified hydrogels when comparing with a normal PNIPAAm hydrogel, although the tendency was not strictly proportional to the microgel amount. Based on the temperature-induced swelling ratio data as well as response kinetics, microgel-impregnated hydrogels exhibited improved thermosensitive characteristics in terms of higher equilibrium swelling ratio as well as faster response rates and the level of improvement depended on the amount of microgel impregnated.  相似文献

Partitioning of organic substrates by thermoresponsive polymer having N‐acryloylaminoalcohol moieties in aqueous phase has been studied. Thermoresponsive polymers, such as poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and poly(NIPAAm‐coN‐acryloyl‐(±)‐alaninol) (poly(NIPAAm‐co‐HIPAAm)), were found to concentrate several organic substrates into the hydrophobic field generated during their phase transition. The amount of the substrates recoverd from the polymer phase mainly depended on the hydrophobicity of the substrates. Aqueous solutions of PNIPAAm (lower critical solution temperature, LCST = 33°C) and poly(NIPAAm‐co‐HIPAAm) (LSCT = 41°C) containing 1‐phenylethanol showed LCSTs at 22°C and 33°C, respectively. The changes of LCSTs indicate that specific interactions such as hydrogen bonding between the side chain functionalities of the polymers and the substrates influence the phase transition behavior. Moreover, new optically active polymers having chiral aminoalcohol moieties have been synthesized by copolymerizations of NIPAAm with N‐acryloylaminoalcohols such as N‐acryloyl‐(S)‐alaninol and N‐acryloyl‐(S)‐prolinol. The (R)/(S) ratio of 1‐phenylethanol recovered from poly(NIPAAm‐coN‐acryloyl‐(S)‐alaninol) and poly(NIPAAm‐coN‐acryloyl‐(S)‐prolinol) were determined to be 75/25 and 68/32, respectively. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary A series of pH/temperature-sensitive hydrogels composed of maleilated chitosan (MC) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) were prepared and characterized with respect to their swelling behaviors, change of lower critical solution temperature (LCST). These hydrogels showed broad pH-sensitivities below 32 °C, but above that temperature exhibited sharp pH-dependent phase transition behaviors which depended on the content of MC in the hydrogels. The change of ratio of NIPAAm to MC in weight did not affect LCST significantly, while it affected equilibrium water content (EWC) at high pH region. The hydrogels also exhibited a typical of reversibility depending on temperature and pH. Received: 14 September 2001/Revised version: 18 October 2001/ Accepted: 22 October 2001  相似文献

pH‐ and temperature‐responsive interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on soy protein and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) were successfully prepared. The structure and properties of the hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analyzer. The equilibrium and dynamic swelling/deswelling behaviors and the drug release properties of the hydrogels responding to pH and/or temperature were also studied in detail. The hydrogels have the porous honeycomb structures, good miscibility and thermal stability, and good pH‐ and temperature‐responsivity. The volume phase transition temperature of the hydrogels is ca. 40°C. Changing the soy protein or crosslinker content could be used to control the swelling behavior and water retention, and the hydrogels have the fastest deswelling rate in pH 1.2 buffer solutions at 45°C. Bovine serum albumin release from the hydrogels has the good pH and temperature dependence. The results show that the proposed IPN hydrogels may have potential applications in the field of biomedical materials such as in drug delivery systems. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
