Three-dimensional braided carbon fiber-reinforced nylon composites (C3D/MCN) were prepared in order to investigate the influence of oxidation of carbon fibers on the tribological properties of the C3D/MCN composites. Friction and wear tests of the C3D/MCN composites with untreated and treated carbon fabric were conducted. The characteristics of the carbon fiber, the interface strength, the hardness, and the worn surface morphologies of the C3D/MCN composites were analyzed. The results show that the specific surface area of treated carbon fiber was far higher than that of untreated carbon fiber and there formed a functional group of -C=O on the carbon fiber surface after air oxidation. The oxidation of the carbon fibers improved the interface strength between the carbon fibers and the matrix and had little effect on the hardness of the composites. The friction coefficient and wear rate of C3D/MCN composites with oxidized carbon fibers were apparently lower than those with untreated carbon fibers. In conclusion, the oxidation of the fibers showed good effects on the improvement of the interface strength and the tribological properties of the composites.  相似文献

PA66 composites filled with surface-treated carbon fiber were prepared by twin-screw extruder in order to study the influence of carbon fiber surface arylboronic acid treatment on the mechanical and tribological behavior of the PA66 composites (CF/PA66). The mechanical property, friction and wear tests of the composites with untreated and treated carbon fiber were performed and the worn surface morphology was analyzed. The results show that the worn surface area of the treated carbon fiber was far smoother than that of the untreated carbon fiber and there formed a bonding adhesion on the carbon fiber surface after treatment. The tensile strength of CF/PA66 composites with surface arylboronic acid treatment was improved. The friction coefficient and wear of arylboronic acid treated CF/PA66 composites were apparently lower than that with untreated carbon fiber. In conclusion, the surface treatment favored the improvement of the higher interface strength and so had good effect on improving the tribological properties of the composites.  相似文献

Cf/C–SiC composites were fabricated via liquid silicon infiltration with 2.5D needle-punched carbon fiber reinforced Cf/C composites. The effect of surface topography and carbon content of the Cf/C–SiC composites on the tribological properties was researched by the ball-on-disk reciprocating tribometer. The results indicate that different fiber layers and cross-section of the composites have various surface topography and show significant differences in the friction and wear properties. By the wear morphology and model analyses, the reason for the tribological anisotropy of the composites is that the distribution of carbon and SiC phases in the composites are inhomogeneous caused by the difference of the carbon fiber orientation and the relative content in each layer. Moreover, the wear rate of the short-cut fiber web layer was the lowest and there is an obvious linear decrease in coefficient of friction with increase of carbon content. The present work explains why the tribological properties of the composites are inconsistent and provides a way to adjust the friction properties of composite materials by optimizing the friction surface.  相似文献

Interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and epoxy resin plays an important role in determining performance of carbon–epoxy composites. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of fiber surface treatment (oxidization in air) on the mechanical properties (flexural strength and modulus, shear and impact strengths) of three‐dimensionally (3D) braided carbon‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (C3D/EP) composites. Carbon fibers were air‐treated under various conditions to improve fiber–matrix adhesion. It is found that excessive oxidation will cause formation of micropits. These micropits are preferably formed in crevices of fiber surfaces. The micropits formed on fiber surfaces produce strengthened fiber–matrix bond, but cause great loss of fiber strength and is probably harmful to the overall performance of the corresponding composites. A trade‐off between the fiber–matrix bond and fiber strength loss should be considered. The effectiveness of fiber surface treatment on performance improvement of the C3D/EP composites was compared with that of the unidirectional carbon fiber–epoxy composites. In addition, the effects of fiber volume fraction (Vf) and braiding angle on relative performance improvements were determined. Results reveal obvious effects of Vf and braiding angle. A mechanism was proposed to explain the experimental phenomena. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 1040–1046, 2002  相似文献

In this study, friction and wear of polyimides reinforced by carbon, glass, aramid, and nano‐alumina fibers were studied and comparatively evaluated against Si3N4 on a ball‐on‐disk test rig under dry rotating and reciprocating sliding, and coefficient of friction and wear rate were considered as responses. The worn surfaces of the composites were examined by scanning electron microscopy to reveal wear mechanisms of the materials' damage. Wear mechanisms are found to be dependent on the test conditions and mechanical properties of the composites itself. It was proven that different reinforcements had different effects on the friction and wear behavior of the polyimide composites to a great extent. The testing condition also had an important role on the tribological properties of the same materials. The best performance was shown by glass fiber‐reinforced polyimide composites owing to their excellent strength and hardness which can share the applied load on the sliding surface. POLYM. The effect of surface treatment [rare earth solution (RES) and air oxidation] of carbon fibers (CFs) on the mechanical and tribological properties of carbon fiber‐reinforced polyimide (CF/PI) composites was comparatively investigated. Experimental results revealed that surface treatment can effectively improve the interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and PI matrix. Thus, the flexural strength and wear resistance were significantly improved. The RES surface treatment is superior to air oxidation treatment in promoting interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and PI matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2008  相似文献

Ternary Cu-Fe-Si alloy were applied to modify tribological behavior of carbon fiber/carbon-silicon carbide (Cf/C-SiC) composites by reactive melt infiltration. Microstructures, physical properties and tribological properties on a full-scale train brake test rig of the modified composites were studied. Results indicate that both Cu and Fe-Si alloy as matrices lead to significantly enhanced thermal conductivity and compressive strength for Cf/C-SiC composites. Moreover, the average friction coefficient of the modified composites is between 0.25 and 0.55, which is higher than that of copper metal matrix composites. In addition, the average volume wear rate of the modified composites is only 0.168 cm3/MJ. The Cf/C-SiC composites modified by Cu and Fe-Si alloy with improved physical properties and tribological properties meet the technical requirement and show high application potential in express train brake systems.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional (3D) braided carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (denoted as CF3D/PEEK) composites with various fiber volume fractions were prepared via hybrid woven plus vacuum heat‐pressing technology and their tribological behaviors against steel counterpart with different normal loads at dry sliding were investigated. Contrast tribological tests with different lubricants (deionized water and sea water) and counterparts made from different materials (epoxy resin, PEEK) were also conducted. The results showed that the incorporation of 3D braided carbon fiber can greatly improve the tribological properties of PEEK over a certain range of carbon fiber volume fraction (Vf) and an optimum fiber loading of ∼54% exists. The friction coefficient of the CF3D/PEEK composites decreased from 0.195 to 0.173, while the specific wear rate increased from 1.48 × 10−7 to 1.78 × 10−7 mm3 Nm−1 with the normal load increasing from 50 to 150 N. Abrasive mechanism was dominated when the composites sliding with GCr15 steel counterpart under dry and aqueous lubrication conditions. Deionized water and sea water lubricants both significantly reduced the wear of the CF3D/PEEK composites. When sliding with neat PEEK counterpart, the CF3D/PEEK composites possess lower friction coefficient than those against epoxy resin and GCr15 steel counterparts. In general, CF3D/PEEK composites possess excellent tribological properties and comprehensive mechanical performance, which makes it become a potential candidate for special heat‐resisting tribological components. Three‐dimensional (3D) braided polyethylene (PE) fiber‐reinforced poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), denoted as PE3D/PMMA, composites were prepared. Mechanical properties including flexural and impact properties, and wear resistance were tested and compared with those of the corresponding unidirectional PE fiber–PMMA (abbreviated to PEL/PMMA) composites. Both untreated and chromic acid‐treated PE fibers were used to fabricate the 3D composites in an attempt to assess the effect of chromic acid treatment on the mechanical properties of the composites. Relative changes of mechanical properties caused by fiber surface treatment were compared between the PE3D/PMMA and PEL/PMMA composites. The treated and untreated PE fibers were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analyzed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS). SEM observations found that micro‐pits were created and that deeper and wider grooves were noted on the surfaces of the PE fibers. XPS analysis revealed that more hydroxyl (? OH) and carboxyl (? COOH) groups were formed after surface treatment. The physical and chemical changes on the surfaces of the PE fibers were responsible for the variations of the mechanical properties of the PE/PMMA composites. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The performance of carbon fiber-reinforced composites largely depends on the properties of the fiber-matrix interface. Here, to improve the interfacial strength properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites, we doped different concentrations of Fe2O3/graphene nanosheets onto the interfacial region of the carbon fiber composites by nano-coating technology. With the aid of the magnetic field, the arrangement of nanosheets could be controlled in the interface. The nanosheets can be arranged on the carbon fiber surface parallel or perpendicularly with different concentrations. The tensile strength and interfacial shear strength of the modified fiber microcomposites had increased by 22.1 and 44.4% respectively with 1.0 mg/mL Fe2O3/graphene nanosheets. The results indicated that the Fe2O3/graphene nanosheets have an important influence on the carbon fibers and carbon fibers composites.  相似文献

Co-continuous SiC3D/Cu composites are interesting wear-resistant materials with a unique structure. However, their interface reaction limits their practical applications. In this study, co-continuous SiC3D/Cu composites were fabricated by pressureless infiltration, and their interfaces were modified with different interface oxidation states by high-temperature oxidisation and atmospheric treatment. The effects of the different interface oxidation treatments on the interfacial reaction and wear behaviour of the co-continuous composites were investigated. The results revealed that the surface oxidisation of the three-dimensional SiC skeleton by high-temperature oxidisation prevented the interface reaction between the SiC strengthening phase and the Cu alloy matrix phase, thus improving the interface bonding and wear properties of the composites. In addition, the surface oxidisation of the Cu alloy matrix phase prevented the occurrence of the interface reaction and improved the interface bonding of the composites. However, the Cu alloy was oxidised and the hardness of the matrix phase in the composites decreased when the infiltration atmosphere was changed into an air environment. Finally, the co-continuous SiC3D/Cu composite with oxidised SiC and unoxidised Cu showed the best wear-resistance performance (approximately 9.77 × 10-7 cm3·m?1·N?1).  相似文献

Gelatin‐based composites reinforced, respectively, with continuous carbon fibers, short carbon fibers, plain woven carbon fibers, and carbon fiber felt were investigated. Tensile and shear strengths, and their changes with fiber volume fraction (Vf) of these four composites were compared. It was demonstrated that at all fiber levels, the composite containing continuous carbon fibers showed the largest strength, while the composite reinforced with carbon fiber felt exhibited the lowest strength of the four composites. The above results were analyzed by comparing the fracture surfaces of the four composites. SEM confirmed the great differences in fracture surfaces for composites of different fiber architectures. The presence of a large number of pores in the CF/Gel composite was responsible for its lowest strength, and cracks within fiber tows caused the lower strength of the CW/Gel composite when compared to its CL/Gel counterpart. It was suggested that fiber architecture exerted a great effect on composite performance and the effect was dependent on the nature of the matrix material.  相似文献

The surface properties at the interface between thermoplastic and cellulosic fibers strongly influence the mechanical properties of plastic/cellulosic fiber composites. This paper examines the role of surface acid-base properties of plasticized PVC and cellulosic fibers on the mechanical properties of the composites. The acid-base surface characteristics of cellulosic fibers were modified by treating the fibers with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (A-1100), dichlorodiethylsilane, phthalic anhydride, and maleated polypropylene. The empirical acid (KA) and base (KD) characteristics (i.e., electron donor/acceptor abilities) of untreated and treated fibers, as well as plasticized PVC, were determined using inverse gas chromatography (IGC) technique. These parameters were used to yield information on the acid-base pair interactions that were correlated with the tensile and notched Izod impact properties of the composites. Acid-base pair interactions have been found to be a valuable parameter in the design of surface modification strategies intended to optimize the tensile strength of the composites. By tailoring the acid-base characteristics of cellulosic fibers and plasticized PVC, a composite with equal tensile strength and greater modulus than unfilled PVC was developed. However, the acid-base factors did not correlate with tensile modulus, the elongation at break, and the notched Izod impact property of PVC/newsprint fiber composites. Aminosilane has been observed to be a suitable adhesion promoter for PVC/wood composites improving significantly the tensile strength of the composites. Other treatments (dichlorodiethylsilane, phtalic anhydride, and maleated polypropylene) were found to be ineffective, giving similar strength compared to the composites with untreated cellulosic fibers. FTIR spectroscopy results suggested that aminosilane was effective because treated cellulosic fibers can react with PVC to form chemical bonds. The resulting bond between PVC and cellulosic fibers accounts for the effectiveness of aminosilane, when compared with other coupling agents.  相似文献

Gradient cermet composites possessing high surface hardness, flexural strength and interface bonding strength were fabricated using vacuum hot-pressing sintering. Ball-on-disk tests were performed to investigate the tribological properties of the gradient cermet composites against 440 C stainless steel, Al2O3 and Si3N4 balls at different sliding speed and load in comparison with traditional Ti(C,N) cermets. The tribological behavior was characterized in terms of friction coefficient and wear rate. The results showed that friction coefficient was significantly dependent on the sliding speed and load when sliding against Al2O3 and Si3N4. However, there was no obvious relation between them during sliding against 440 C stainless steel due to the formation of metal adhesive layer. Gradient cermet composites exhibited a higher friction coefficient but lower wear rate than traditional Ti(C,N) cermets. The main wear mechanism of gradient cermet composites was adhesion wear during sliding against 440 C stainless steel, while abrasion wear was the predominant mechanism during sliding against Al2O3 and Si3N4. It was expected that gradient cermet composites would be excellent candidates for cutting tool materials.  相似文献

Cf/SiC composites were fabricated using fiber coatings including CNTs and matrix infiltration using the polymer impregnation and pyrolysis process. Interface between fiber and CNTs (CF/CNTs) was tailored to optimize mechanical properties of hybrid composites. The tailored interphases, such as Pyrocarbon (PyC) and PyC/SiC, protect fibers from degradation during the growth of CNTs successfully. Hybrid composites with well‐tailored CF/CNTs interface displayed significantly increased mechanical strength (352 ± 21 MPa) compared with that (34 ± 3 MPa) of composites reinforced with CNTs, which grown on carbon fibers directly. The interfacial bonding strength of hybrid composites was improved and optimized by tailoring the CF/CNTs interface. Interfacial failure modes were studied, and a firm interface bonding at the joint where CNTs grown was observed.  相似文献

In recent years, three‐dimensionally (3D) braided composites have attracted a great deal of attention because of their high‐impact damage tolerance and fatigue life, superior fracture toughness, and so forth, and have been used in aeronautics, military, and transportation. These advantages make them strong candidates for osteosynthesis devices. In this study, 3D braided carbon fiber–epoxy (C3D/EP) composites were produced via a simple vacuum impregnation technique. The load‐deflection curve, mechanical properties, and influence of fiber volume fraction, braiding angle, and axial reinforcing fibers were examined to determine their suitability for internal fixation devices. It is found that the C3D/EP composites have excellent toughness and do not show brittleness when fractured because of their relatively high void content. The flexural, shear, and impact strengths of the C3D/EP composites are excellent. It was shown that a C3D/EP composite with a stiffness similar to load‐bearing bones can be made while maintaining enough strength. It is concluded that a relatively higher void content and braiding angle is more suitable for the C3D/EP composites from the viewpoint of requirements of fracture fixation materials. The moisture absorption behavior and changes in mechanical properties caused by moisture uptake were evaluated. Results show that absorbed moisture slightly decreases mechanical properties of the C3D/EP composites. Contrary to the unreinforced epoxy, the moisture absorption behavior of the C3D/EP composites cannot be described with Fick's law of diffusion, probably because of the presence of voids and/or 3D fiber structure. The exact mechanisms should be proposed in further investigations. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 1031–1039, 2002  相似文献

To improve the friction and wear behavior of the polyurethane composites, carbon fibers were modified with 2, 4‐diisocyanatotoluene. The mechanical and tribological properties of the reinforced polyurethane composites were studied. Tensile strength of the composites increased with the addition of carbon fibers. The friction and wear experiments were tested on a MRH‐3 model ring‐on‐block test rig at different sliding speeds and loads under dry sliding. Experimental results revealed that carbon fibers with chemical treatment contributed to largely improve the tribological properties of the polyurethane composites. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) investigations showed that the worn surface of the modified polyurethane composite was smoother than pure polyurethane under given load and sliding speed. POLYM.
