This study addresses the transient heat and mass transfer problem by laminar flow of a Newtonian, viscous electrically conducting, and heat generating/absorbing fluid on a continuously moving permeable surface. It was carried out with the well-known network simulation method. The effect of the parameters involved in the process were analyzed, so the influence of the parameters is represented graphically for several cases. The dimensionless parameters used in this study are: chemical reaction parameter, Prandtl number, Grashof number, absorption coefficient or heat generation, Schmidt number, and Hartmann number. The results presented are important because of the relevance of the conclusions for the steady and transient cases. In the study, the flow was considered laminar and two-dimensional. In addition, the transverse magnetic field is uniform and viscous dissipation effects, Hall effect, and Joule heating are omitted.  相似文献

An analysis is presented to investigate the effects of chemical reaction on unsteady free convective heat and mass transfer on a stretching surface in a porous medium. The governing partial differential equations have been transformed by a similarity transformation into a system of ordinary differential equations, which are solved numerically using an efficient tri-diagonal implicit finite-difference method. The results obtained show that the flow field is influenced appreciably by the presence of unsteadiness parameter, chemical reaction parameter, permeability parameter, and suction/injection parameter.  相似文献

The present work analyzes the process of mass transfer with chemical reaction in a system formed by a periodically curved catalytic wall, which is wetted by a descending film. Through the film a limiting gaseous reactant is transferred from the stagnant gas phase to the catalyst where the chemical reaction takes place.

The film hydrodynamics is first solved with the unknown free surface through a regular perturbation technique, by expanding the resulting equations in terms of a small parameter: the ratio between the film average thickness and the wave length of the curved solid wall. Assuming that the system is isothermal and at steady state, the mass transfer of the gas is afterwards incorporated. A first order kinetics whose limiting reactant is in the gas phase occurs in the solid phase.

Once the model is established and solved, the influence of the dimensionless parameters upon the effectiveness factor and the solid-liquid Biot number is then studied; important effects are found by changing the solid surface curvature at constant flow rate and catalyst volume. Besides, changes in the flow rate, the Peclet number and the ratio between the solid average width and the film average thickness, show significant effects on the net mass transfer process.  相似文献

An analysis is presented to investigate the effects of variable viscosity and thermal stratification on non-Darcy MHD mixed convective heat and mass transfer of a viscous, incompressible, and electrically conducting fluid past a porous wedge in the presence of chemical reaction. The wall of the wedge is embedded in a uniform non-Darcian porous medium in order to allow for possible fluid wall suction or injection. The governing partial differential equations of the problem, subjected to their boundary conditions, are solved numerically by applying an efficient solution scheme for local nonsimilarity boundary layer analysis. Numerical calculations up to third-order level of truncation are carried out for different values of dimensionless parameters. The results are presented graphically, and the conclusion is drawn that the flow field and other quantities of physical interest are significantly influenced by these parameters. The results are compared with those known from the literature, and excellent agreement between the results is obtained.  相似文献

Viscous, laminar mixed convection boundary-layer flow over a horizontal plate, with chemical reaction, is considered. The governing equations are expressed in nondimensional form. Group theory is employed to determine the invariant solutions of these equations under a particular continuous one-parameter group. Series solutions of the transformed coupled system of equations are then generated for velocity, temperature, and concentration functions using the Differential Transform Method (DTM) with Padé approximants. The influence of thermal buoyancy parameter, species buoyancy parameter, chemical reaction parameter, order of chemical reaction, Prandtl number, and Schmidt number on the flow characteristics is evaluated in detail The obtained solutions are verified by comparison with the numerical shooting quadrature results. Applications of the study arise in sheet materials processing, bio-reactors, and catalytic systems in chemical engineering.  相似文献

The effect of chemical reaction on the flow, heat, and mass transfer within a viscous fluid on an unsteady stretching sheet is examined. The stretching rate, temperature and concentration of the sheet, and the chemical reaction rate are assumed to vary with time. The time-dependent boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced through a convenient similarity transformation to a set of ordinary differential equations, which are numerically solved by applying the fourth-order Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg scheme with the shooting technique. Results for the velocity, temperature, and concentration distributions as well as the wall temperature and concentration gradients are presented graphically for various values of the unsteadiness parameter A, Prandtl number Pr, Schmidt number Sc, and chemical reaction parameter γ.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out to obtain the effects of higher order chemical reaction on flow and mass transfer characteristics of micropolar fluids past a nonlinear permeable stretching sheet immersed in a porous medium with variable concentration of the reactant. The local similarity solutions for the flow, microrotation and mass transfer are obtained numerically and are illustrated graphically for various material parameters. Comparisons carried out with results from previously published work present excellent agreement. The results show that rate of mass transfer from the sheet to the surrounding fluid decreases significantly with the increase of nonlinear stretching parameter and increases with the increase of concentration parameter. The mass transfer of the reactive species strongly depends on the reaction rate parameter as well as order of the chemical reaction. It is stronger for the first‐order reaction than that for the higher order reaction. The rate of surface mass transfer decreases with the increase of the Darcy parameter. The results also show that the effect of these parameters on the micropolar fluids are less compared to the Newtonian fluids.  相似文献

An analysis was carried out numerically to study unsteady heat and mass transfer by free convection flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting Newtonian fluid along a vertical permeable plate under the action of transverse magnetic field taking into account thermal radiation as well as homogeneous chemical reaction of first order. The fluid considered here is an optically thin gray gas, absorbing-emitting radiation, but a non-scattering medium. The porous plate was subjected to a constant suction velocity with variable surface temperature and concentration. The dimensionless governing coupled, nonlinear boundary layer partial differential equations were solved by an efficient, accurate, extensively validated, and unconditionally stable finite difference scheme of the Crank-Nicolson type. The velocity, temperature, and concentration fields were studied for the effects of Hartmann number (M), radiation parameter (R), chemical reaction (K), and Schmidt number (Sc). The local skin friction, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number are also presented and analyzed graphically. It is found that velocity is reduced considerably with a rise in the magnetic body parameter (M), whereas the temperature and concentration are found to be markedly boosted with an increase in the magnetic body parameter (M). An increase in the conduction-radiation parameter (R) is found to escalate the local skin friction (τ), Nusselt number, and concentration, whereas an increase in the conduction-radiation parameter (R) is shown to exert the opposite effect on either velocity or temperature field. Similarly, the local skin friction and the Sherwood number are both considerably increased with an increase in the chemical reaction parameter. Possible applications of the present study include laminar magneto-aerodynamics, materials processing, and MHD propulsion thermo-fluid dynamics.  相似文献

In this study, unsteady MHD boundary layer flow with diffusion of chemically reactive species undergoing first-order chemical reaction over a permeable stretching sheet with suction or blowing and also with power-law variation in wall concentration is investigated. Using similarity transformation, the governing partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear self-similar ordinary differential equations. The transformed equations are then solved by the finite difference method using the quasi-linearization technique. Due to the increase in the unsteadiness parameter, the velocity initially decreases, but after a certain point it increases. A similar effect is also observed in case of concentration distribution. The increase in magnetic parameter causes a decrease in velocity and an increase in concentration. For increasing strength of applied suction both momentum and concentration boundary layer thicknesses decrease. On the other hand, applied blowing has reverse effects. Moreover, the mass transfer from the sheet is enhanced with increasing values of Schmidt number, reaction rate parameter, and also power-law exponent (related to wall concentration distribution). For high negative values of the power-law exponent, mass absorption at the sheet occurs. Moreover, due to increase of unsteadiness, this mass absorption is prevented.  相似文献

In the present investigation, we study the effects of slip boundary condition on the diffusion of chemically reactive species in steady boundary layer flow of viscous incompressible fluid over a vertical stretching sheet with suction or blowing. The first-order chemical reaction is considered and wall concentration varies linearly along the sheet. The self-similar equations are obtained using similarity transformations and are solved numerically using shooting method. Our study reveals that due to the increase of diffusion parameter and blowing, the velocity increases, and it decreases with suction, Schmidt number, and reaction rate parameter. Importantly, for increase of slip parameter, the boundary layer thickness increases. In contrast, the concentration at a point increases only for increasing slip and blowing, while it decreases for increase of all other parameters.  相似文献

The effects of thermal and solutal stratification on mixed convection along a vertical plate embedded in a micropolar fluid saturated non‐Darcy porous medium are analysed. The nonlinear governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are initially cast into dimensionless forms by pseudo‐similarity variables. The resulting system of equations is then solved numerically using the Keller‐box method. The numerical results are compared and found to be in good agreement with previously published results as special cases of the present investigation. The velocity, microrotation, temperature and concentration profiles are shown for different values of the coupling number, non‐Darcy parameter, mixed convection parameter, thermal and solutal stratification parameters. The numerical values of the skin friction, wall couple stress, heat and mass transfer rates for different values of governing parameters are also tabulated. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

This article is concerned with the analysis of the effects of thermal radiation on oscillatory mixed convection flow of a micropolar fluid in a rotating frame of reference in the presence of transverse magnetic field and Hall current. The influence of a first-order homogeneous chemical reaction and heat source effects is also analyzed. The governing partial differential equations with the appropriate boundary conditions are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations. The dimensionless governing equations for this investigation are solved analytically after using small perturbation approximation. The effects of various parameters on the velocity, temperature, and concentration fields as well as on skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number with their amplitude and phase are discussed in detail. Numerical results are discussed with the help of graphs and tables. Present results are also compared with previously published work.  相似文献

A theoretical study has been made on collapsing cavities in liquids. When a chemical reaction is not occurring in the cavity, the departure from the Rayleigh collapse time increases with decreasing Weber number. When a chemical reaction is taking place within the cavity, the conversion first decreases and then increases with decreasing initial radius of the cavity owing to the interaction of collapse time and gas temperature within the cavity. For large cavities the viscous damping effects are almost negligible, while for small cavities the damping of the cavity motion is quite significant. When an exothermic reaction is taking place within the cavity, the velocity of the cavity wall and maximum radius achieved upon rebound increase with each successive rebound until chemical equilibrium is approached. The influence of an increase in the number of molecules formed during the reaction upon collapse is described in the text along with a discussion of how various parameter and dimensionless groups affect the collapse of the cavity.  相似文献

We analyzed the problem of unsteady, incompressible free convective doubly stratified flow past a semiinfinite vertical plate with the influence of electrophoresis, heat source/sink and chemical reaction. The partial differential equations governing the flow are solved by employing an implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson type. The effect of heat generation and absorption in stratified and unstratified flow are examined and hence the influence of stratification on velocity, temperature and concentration are investigated and presented graphically. Further, the impact of the electrophoresis on particle concentration in the presence of generative and destructive reaction is analyzed. As well, the effects of the physical parameters on local and average values of skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also investigated and illustrated graphically. The particular solutions of the present results are compared with the existing solution in literature and are found to be in good agreement.  相似文献

An analytical solution for absorption of a gas with an accompanying first order reaction in a laminar falling film is developed. The gas flow is countercurrent to that of the liquid film. Change in the gas phase concentration because of the reaction, as it happens in practical situations, has been taken into account. Some computed results are presented to show the effects of the system parameters—namely, the reaction rate parameter, the Biot number, and the absorption factor— on the mass transfer enhancement factor and on the fractional removal of the feed gas over a given non-dimensional film length.  相似文献

In this article,we have considered the simultaneous influence of ohmic heating and chemical reaction on heat and mass transfer over a stretching sheet. The effects of applied magnetic field are also taken into consideration while the induced magnetic field is not considered due to very small magnetics Reynolds number. The governing flow problem comprises of momentum, continuity, thermal energy and concentration equation which are transformed into highly nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations by means of similarity transforms, which are then, solved numerically with the help of Successive Linearization method (SLM) and Chebyshev Spectral collocation method.Numerical values of skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, and Sherwood number are also taken into account with the help of tables. The physical influence of the involved parameters of flow velocity, temperature and concentration distribution is discussed and demonstrated graphically. The numerical comparison is also presented with the existing published results and found that the present results are in excellent agreement which also confirms the validity of the present methodology.  相似文献

Analysis was made to study the effect of diffusion of chemically reactive species in boundary layer flow of an incompressible fluid over a porous flat plate in porous medium. The first-order chemical reaction was considered and the reaction rate of the reactive species was taken in such a manner that it varied inversely along the plate. Self-similar equations were obtained using similarity transformations and were then solved by the shooting technique using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. This analysis revealed that at a fixed point, with increase of the permeability of the porous medium the velocity increases, but the concentration decreases. The suction reduces the thicknesses of momentum and concentration boundary layers but due to blowing the thicknesses become larger. With increase of both the Schmidt number and the reaction rate parameter, the reactive concentration profiles decrease. For a destructive chemical reaction, the concentration profiles exhibit negative value when the Schmidt number is large. It is very significant to note that in some constructive chemical reaction cases the mass absorption at the plate occurs for small Schmidt number.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the combined effects of internal heat generation and higher order chemical reaction on a steady two‐dimensional non‐Darcian forced convective flow of a viscous incompressible fluid with variable dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity in a fluid saturated porous medium passing over a linear stretching sheet. Using similarity transformations, the governing nonlinear‐coupled partial differential equations are made dimensionless and solved numerically for similarity solutions using very robust computer algebra software Maple 8. The non‐dimensional velocity, temperature and concentration distributions are presented graphically for various pertinent parameters such as relative temperature difference parameter, Darcy number, porosity parameter, reaction rate parameter and the order of the chemical reaction. The variations of Prandtl number and Schmidt number within the boundary layer are also displayed graphically when the fluid dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity are temperature dependent. From the present numerical computations it is found that Prandtl number as well as Schmidt number must be taken as variables within the flow domain when the fluid's dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity are variable. In the presence of internal heat generation, dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity of the fluid are found to be higher than when it is absent. Increasing Darcy number reduces dynamic viscosity as well as thermal conductivity whereas increasing pore size reduces the Schmidt number and increases the Prandtl number within the boundary layer. For higher order reaction the rate of increase in mass transfer function is less compared to the rate of increase for the lower order reaction. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

A qualitative analysis of the influence of a first or pseudofirst order chemical reaction in the liquid phase for the absorption of gases of different solubility is presented. Quantitative estimates for the influence of the chemical reaction on the mass transfer kinetics, the distribution of the diffusive resistance between the phases and the presence of non-linear convective mass transfer effects, in the two phases are obtained. All results are valid for the diffusive boundary layer approximation.  相似文献
