This article attempts to overview the areas of specialization in which innovative analysis, modeling, and testing strategies for cost-effective and manufacturable integrated circuits can significantly impact electronic systems industries in both commercial and defense sectors. In addition to providing a research foundation for subsequent development, the article identifies several serious technological shortcomings. In the process of such identification, it at tempts to destroy a few myths that hamper the continuing development of chip-design technologies, particularly in the analog integrated circuits and systems arena. The views expressed herein are forged from research experiences and discussions with cognizant university colleagues, and engineering and research consulting problems encountered in local and national industries. They also reflect countless conversations with academic and industrial personnel who either enrolled in short courses or attended invited lectures offered in the United States and in other countries  相似文献

In the aftermath of recent corporate scandals, managers and researchers have turned their attention to questions of ethics management. We identify five common myths about business ethics and provide responses that are grounded in theory, research, and business examples. Although the scientific study of business ethics is relatively new, theory and research exist that can guide executives who are trying to better manage their employees' and their own ethical behavior. We recommend that ethical conduct be managed proactively via explicit ethical leadership and conscious management of the organization's ethical culture.  相似文献

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one of the fastest growing and most misunderstood technologies in the world at the moment. Confusion, outdated beliefs and urban mythology reign over such simple issues as how it works, the quality of the calls, and, of course, how much it costs. This paper examines seven existing myths about VoIP. These myths are that: (1) VoIP is free; (2) the only difference between VoIP and regular telephony is the price; (3) the quality of service isn't an issue nowadays because there's plenty of bandwidth in the network; (4) VoIP can't replace regular telephony because it still cannot guarantee quality of service; (5) VoIP is just another data application; (6) VoIP isn't secure; and (7) a phone is a phone is a phone.  相似文献

QoS provisioning in IEEE 802.11 networks is a nontrivial task due to a certain degree of randomness in the contention-based medium access control protocol. The problem often resides in the fact that flows belonging to the same service class use the same MAC parameters regardless of their respective bit rates. Assigning static MAC parameters confines WLAN deployment possibilities, and often leads to throughput fairness rather than perceived QoS fairness. This creates situations where network resources as well as their potential profitability are underex-ploited. Restricting the volume of traffic load carried by the network is a primordial task in order to preserve QoS performances of active multimedia services. In this article we review existing approaches to deliver QoS to real-time services in order to gain thorough insight into inhibiting factors inherent to contention-based 802.11 networks. The emphasis is put on studying the possible means to sustain QoS guarantees, which is of utmost importance for network operators willing to commit theirs underlying resources through service level agreements.  相似文献

Results of an experiment in which a sample of experienced engineers, scientists, and managers-people who would be expected to be objective decision-makers and who report themselves to be rational decision makers-are influenced by very subtle informational cues are presented. These subtle cues did not alter the object facts in research and development financial allocation decisions, but they did apparently alter the decision-maker's reference point. The cues also altered the degree of risk perceived in the decision scenario. As a result, the decision-makers exposed to different frames made different decisions and reported perceiving different levels of risk in the decision episode  相似文献

This article reviews the key differences between traditional IP routing and the emerging multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) approach, and identifies where MPLS adds value to IP networking. In various corners of the industry MPLS has been held up as the solution to IP QoS, gigabit forwarding, network scaling, and traffic engineering. Each of these expectations is critically considered in the light of developments in conventional gigabit IP routers. It is shown that MPLS adds the ability to forward packets over arbitrary non-shortest paths, and emulate high-speed “tunnels” between IP-only domains-capabilities critical to service providers who need to better manage resources around their backbones, or who are planning IP VPN services. However, it is also argued that the technology required to support IP QoS and gigabit forwarding is not unique to MPLS. A network of gigabit IP routers or switches may be entirely sufficient for QoS and performance if traffic engineering is not a requirement  相似文献
