The present study was carried out to establish knowledge of consequence for setting up guidelines of importance for production of competitive organic pork of high quality. Performance and meat quality characteristics were compared between three organic pig production systems based on indoor housing with access to an outdoor area and a Danish conventional indoor system including 100% concentrate during the finishing feeding stage.

The three organic systems used the following three feeding regimes: 100% organic concentrate according to Danish recommendations, 70% organic concentrate (restricted) plus ad libitum organic barley/pea silage and 70% organic concentrate (restricted) plus ad libitum organic clover grass silage, respectively.

With exception of a slightly lower daily gain in organic pigs fed 100% concentrate, no significant difference was found in performance and meat quality characteristics compared with results obtained in the conventional system. In contrast and independent of roughage used, organic pigs raised on 70% concentrate had a significant reduction in daily gain (P < 0.001) compared with pigs raised on 100% concentrate, despite the fact that no difference in feed conversion rate was seen between the tested production systems. However, the percentage of leanness increased significantly in meat from organic pigs raised on 70% concentrate plus roughage compared with meat from pigs given 100% concentrate. This was reflected in higher yield (weight) of lean cuts and lower yield of cuts with high fat content from pigs fed 70% concentrate plus roughage. In general, organic feeding resulted in a significantly higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the back fat (1.8%), which increased further when restricted feeding plus roughage (4%) was used. Restricted concentrate feeding gave rise to a decrease in tenderness compared with pork from pigs fed 100% concentrate.  相似文献

Sixty-four male Holstein-Friesian × Dutch Friesian veal calves (46 ± 3.0 kg) were used to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of different levels and sources of dietary roughage on animal performance and rumen development. Treatments consisted of 1) C100 = concentrate only; 2) C70-S30 = concentrate (70%) with straw (30%), 3) C70-G30 = concentrate (70%) with dried grass (30%), 4) C70-G15-S15 = concentrate (70%) with dried grass (15%) and straw (15%), 5) C70-CS30 = concentrate (70%) with corn silage (30%), 6) C40-CS60 = concentrate (40%) with corn silage (60%), 7) C70-CS30-AL = concentrate (70%) with corn silage (30%) ad libitum, 8) C70-G15-S15-AL = concentrate (70%) with dried grass (15%) and straw (15%) ad libitum. All dietary treatments were provided in addition to a commercial milk replacer. Concentrate was provided as pellets and roughage was chopped. The dietary treatments 1 to 6 were supplied restrictedly to a maximum of 750 g of dry matter (DM) per day, whereas treatments 7 and 8 were offered ad libitum in combination with a reduced amount of milk replacer. Calves were euthanized after 10 wk. Straw supplementation (C70-S30 vs. C70-G30 and C70-CS30) reduced DM intake, and ad libitum supply of concentrate and roughage increased DM intake. Roughage addition did not affect growth performance. Rumen fermentation was characterized by low pH and high total volatile fatty acids and reducing sugar concentrations. Calves fed ad libitum showed lower ruminal lactate concentrations than calves fed restrictedly. Ammonia concentrations were highest in calves fed C-100 and lowest in calves fed ad libitum. The recovery of CoEDTA (added to milk replacer) varied between 20.5 and 34.9%, indicating that significant amounts of milk entered the rumen. Roughage addition decreased the incidence of plaque formation (rumen mucosa containing focal or multifocal patches with coalescing and adhering papillae covered by a sticky mass of feed, hair and cell debris) and the incidence of calves with poorly developed rumen mucosa. However, morphometric parameters of the rumen wall were hardly influenced by the type and level of roughage. Ruminal polysaccharide-degrading enzyme activities reflected the adaptation of the microorganisms to the dietary concentrate and roughage source. Results indicated that in veal calves, the addition of roughage to concentrate diets did not affect growth performance and positively influenced the macroscopic appearance of the rumen wall.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of feed restriction and goat genotype on meat quality. Three genotypes (Brazilian native breed Canindé; Brazilian native breed Moxotó; and F1 Boer crossbred animals obtained by crossing Boer bucks with local breed does) and three different feeding regimens (ad libitum fed, AL; restricted fed at 75% of the ad libitum, R.75; or restricted fed at 50% of the average ad libitum intake, R.50) were used. There was no difference (P > 0.05) in chemical composition, total and soluble collagen, and shear force of the Longissimus lumborum muscle among genotypes. However, AL had greater amounts of soluble collagen and crude protein in the muscle (P < 0.05) than R.75. No difference (P > 0.05) was observed for the myofibrillar fragmentation index. The goat genotype presented few differences in their fatty acid profiles. However, goats fed ad libitum had a more favorable fatty acid profile for human health with greater concentrations of oleic acid, unsaturated fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acid.  相似文献

The objectives were to evaluate the effect of (1) supplementing concentrates to multiparous Holstein cows during the dry period on colostral and milk immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration; and (2) feeding calves colostrum at either 5 or 10% of their body weight (BW) on passive transfer of immunity, health, and performance. Holstein multiparous cows (n = 37) were assigned to 1 of 2 nutritional treatments during an 8-wk dry period: (1) offered ad libitum grass silage only (GS) or (2) offered ad libitum access to the same grass silage plus concentrate [total mixed ration in a 75:25 dry matter (DM) ratio], providing a mean concentrate DM intake of 3.0 kg/cow per day (GSC). Both treatment groups were offered identical levels of mineral and vitamin supplementation. Calves from these cows were weighed immediately after birth and fed either 5% (5BW) or 10% (10BW) of their BW in colostrum from their own dams within 2.5 h of birth. Calves in the 10BW group received their second feed of colostrum from first-milking colostrum. Concentrate supplementation during the dry period had no effect on colostral IgG concentration, first-milking IgG yield, or fat, protein, and lactose contents. However, cows in GSC produced a greater mean milk yield over the first 8 milkings compared with cows in the GS group. Concentrate supplementation had no effect on calf BW or BW gain, serum IgG, or apparent efficiency of absorption (AEA) at 24 h after birth. However, offspring from the GSC group had fewer cases of enteritis during the first 56 d of life compared with offspring from the GS group. Calves in the 10BW group had greater mean serum IgG concentration for the first 3 d following birth; however, at 24 h after birth, we observed no treatment effect on AEA. The rate of enteritis was greater for calves in the 5BW treatment compared with 10BW. The colostrum-feeding regimen had no effect on BW gain or on the incidence of pneumonia among calf treatment groups. In conclusion, concentrate supplementation regimens offered during the dry period had a positive effect on colostrum yield, and offspring from the GSC group had a reduced rate of enteritis. Feeding 10% of BW of colostrum versus 5% of BW resulted in a greater serum IgG concentration for the first 3 d postpartum, and 10BW calves had a reduced rate of enteritis. Overall, to achieve successful passive transfer, decrease the rate of enteritis, and increase efficiency in the dairy calf, we recommend that dairy calves be fed 10% of their BW in colostrum as soon as possible after birth.  相似文献

Improving pork quality and shelf life is important in today’s swine industry because higher levels of DDGS are incorporated into pig diets. Relatively high level of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in DDGS may increase pork susceptibility to lipid oxidation and thus reduce pork shelf life. Antioxidants such as vitamin E may delay the onset of pork lipid oxidation when used as an ingredient in the diet. This experiment examined carcass characteristics, meat quality, shelf life, and color stability in pork from pigs (n = 150) fed five levels of a natural vitamin E (Nova-E) and one level of synthetic vitamin E. Natural vitamin E and synthetic vitamin E had no effect on carcass characteristics or meat quality. Increasing dietary natural vitamin E from 10 to 200 mg/kg decreased lipid oxidation. Lipid oxidation of pork chops and ground pork was similar between pigs fed 40 mg/kg and higher levels of natural vitamin E, indicating no additional benefits from supplementing beyond 40 mg/kg natural vitamin E. Supplementing 200 mg/kg synthetic vitamin E decreased pork lipid oxidation when compared to supplementing 10 mg/kg natural vitamin E. High levels of natural vitamin E or synthetic vitamin E, however, did not prevent discoloration of loin chops. These data indicate that natural vitamin E was effective to help reduce lipid oxidation and the effective minimal level of dietary supplementation appeared to be 40 mg/kg.  相似文献

Four first-lactation Holstein cows were used 65 to 177 days postpartum in a 4 × 4 Latin square trial to evaluate possible associative feeding effects between corn and haycrop silages. Nutrient digestibility and nitrogen and energy balances were studied. Diets were concentrate mixture, urea-treated corn silage, and early-cut, wilted haycrop silage in dry matter ratios of 55:45:0, 55:30:15, 55:15:30, and 55:0:45. Rations were offered just below energy balance in each 28-day period. Ration components were fed separately, concurrently, and twice daily. Crude protein in concentrate, corn silage, and hay crop silage dry matter was 16.9, 11.1, and 12.5%. Milk yield (18 to 19 kg) and ration dry matter intake (2.61% body weight) were not significantly different among diets. Apparent digestibility of gross energy, dry matter, protein, and fiber was not different among diets, but fat was more digestible in corn silage. Partition of ingested energy and nitrogen was not affected by treatments except that urine nitrogen was higher in corn silage. No associative feeding effects were significant. The two silages were equivalent in supporting milk production when fed in equal dry matter amounts.  相似文献

Ten rumen-cannulated Holstein-Friesian cows were used to examine the effect of feeding supplemental concentrate during the dry period on rumen papillae morphology and fractional absorption rate (ka) of volatile fatty acids (VFA) during the dry period and subsequent lactation. Treatment consisted of supplemental concentrate [3.0 kg of dry matter (DM)/d] from 28 d antepartum (ap) until the day of calving, whereas control did not receive supplemental concentrate. Cows were fed for ad libitum intake and had free access to the dry period ration (27% grass silage, 28% corn silage, 35% wheat straw, and 11% soybean meal on a DM basis) and, from calving onward, to a basal lactation ration (42% grass silage, 42% corn silage, and 16% soybean meal on a DM basis). From 1 to 3 d postpartum (pp), all cows were fed 0.9 kg DM/d of concentrate, which increased linearly thereafter to 8.9 kg of DM/d on d 11 pp. At 28, 18, and 8 d ap, and 3, 17, 31, and 45 d pp, rumen papillae were collected and kaVFA was measured in all cows. On average, 13.8 (standard deviation: 3.8) papillae were collected each from the ventral, caudodorsal, and caudoventral rumen sacs per cow per day. The kaVFA was measured by incubating a standardized buffer fluid (45 L), containing 120 mM VFA (60% acetic, 25% propionic, and 15% butyric acid) and Co-EDTA as fluid passage marker, in the evacuated and washed rumen. Treatment did not affect ap or pp DM and energy intakes or milk yield and composition. Treatment increased papillae surface area, which was 19 and 29% larger at 18 and 8 d ap compared with 28 d ap, respectively. Surface area increased, mainly due to an increase in papillae width. However, treatment did not increase kaVFA at 18 and 8 d ap compared with 28 d ap. In the control group, no changes in papillae surface area or kaVFA were observed during the dry period. In the treatment group, papillae surface area decreased between 8 d ap and 3 d pp, whereas no decrease was observed for control. From 3 to 45 d pp, papillae surface area and kaVFA increased for all cows by approximately 50%, but the ap concentrate treatment did not affect kaVFA pp. In conclusion, the efficacy of supplemental concentrate during the dry period to increase papillae surface area and kaVFA in preparation for subsequent lactation is not supported by the present study. Current observations underline the importance of functional measurements in lieu of morphological measurements to assess changes in the adapting rumen wall.  相似文献

Two methods of feeding concentrates according to milk production were compared in a switchback experimental design. Twenty-four cows were assigned to two groups and the groups balanced according to age, milk production, fat-corrected milk production, and body weight. The cows were fed individually their daily allowance of concentrate while in the milking parlor or with an electronic feeder which dispersed concentrates at any hour of the day. All cows received corn silage in a feed bunk. Daily milk production increased .71 kg when cows were fed concentrates electronically. However, there were no significant differences in daily concentrate intake, production of fat-corrected milk, butter-fat percentage, or solids-not-fat percentage for the two treatments.  相似文献

Digestibility and production responses to feeding Ca salts of fatty acids were determined in lactating cows. Cows 120 d in milk were fed 4% of DM as Ca salts of fatty acids using chromium oxide mordanted corn silage as unabsorbed reference substance. Digestion of DM and N did not change, fatty acid digestion increased, and Ca percentage absorption decreased. Milk and milk fat production were enhanced.In production experiments in Pennsylvania, cows in early lactation were fed 54% of total diet as roughage and .45 kg/d Ca salts of fatty acids. Milk increased by 4% and FCM by 6%. Plasma somatotropin decreased, and insulin was not changed. In similar experiments in Israel with 31% of total diet as roughage, feeding .5 kg/d Ca salts of fatty acids to cows following parturition enhanced milk by 5% and FCM by 9.5%. The production increment of Ca salts of fatty acids decreased following peak lactation. No after effects of feeding Ca salts were observed. Body weight changes and rumen VFA were similar, whereas DM intake was .9 kg less and plasma FFA decreased with feeding Ca salts. It is concluded that inclusion of Ca salts of fatty acids in early lactation enhances production of milk and FCM.  相似文献

Subacute ruminal acidosis reduces lactation performance in dairy cattle and most often occurs in animals fed a high concentrate:forage ration with large amounts of readily fermentable starch, which results in increased production of volatile fatty acids and lactic acid and a reduction in ruminal pH. Acarbose is commercially available (Glucobay, Bayer, Wuppertal, Germany) and indicated for the control of blood glucose in diabetic patients. In cattle, acarbose acts as an α-amylase and glucosidase inhibitor that slows the rate of degradation of starch to glucose, thereby reducing the rate of volatile fatty acid production and maintaining rumen pH at higher levels. The ability of acarbose to reverse the reduced feed intake and milk fat percentage and yield associated with a high concentrate:forage ration with a high risk of inducing subacute ruminal acidosis was evaluated in 2 experiments with lactating dairy cattle. In 2 preliminary experiments, the effects of a 70:30 concentrate:forage ration on ruminal pH and lactation were evaluated. Ruminal pH was monitored in 5 Holstein steers with ruminal cannulas every 10 min for 5 d. Ruminal pH was <5.5 for at least 4 h in 79% of the animal days. In dairy cows, the 70:30 concentrate:forage ration decreased feed intake 5%, milk fat percentage 7%, and milk fat yield 8% compared with a 50:50 concentrate:forage ration but did not affect milk yield. Early lactating dairy cattle were offered the 70:30 concentrate:forage ration with 0 or 0.75 g/d of acarbose added in a crossover design in 2 experiments. In the first experiment, acarbose increased dry matter feed intake (23.1 vs. 21.6 kg/d) and 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield (33.7 vs. 31.7 kg/d) because of an increase in percentage milk fat (3.33 vs. 3.04%) compared with control cows. In the second experiment, cows were fasted for 3 h before the morning feeding to induce consumption of a large meal to mimic conditions that might be associated with unplanned delayed feeding. In this experiment, acarbose also increased feed intake (22.5 vs. 21.8 kg/d) and 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield (36.9 vs. 33.9 kg/d) due to increased percentage milk fat (3.14 vs. 2.66%) compared with controls. Thus, acarbose reversed the decreased feed intake and low milk fat percentage and yield associated with feeding a high concentrate:forage ration shown to induce subacute ruminal acidosis in Holstein steers.  相似文献

A daily pattern of feed intake, milk synthesis, and plasma metabolites and hormones occurs in dairy cows fed a total mixed ration once or twice a day. The objective of this study was to determine if feeding multiple rations within a day, complementing these rhythms, would improve milk production. Twelve Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Cows were housed in tie stalls with feed tubs, and feed weight was recorded every 10 s for observation of feeding behavior. Rations were a low fiber and high fermentable starch ration [LFHS; 27.4% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 31.7% starch based on 55.7% corn silage and 14.1% steam-flaked corn], a high fiber and low fermentable starch ration (HFLS; 31.7% NDF and 22.3% starch based on 44% corn silage, 26.3% alfalfa haylage, and no steam-flaked corn), and a total mixed ration that was a 1:3 ratio of LFHS and HFLS (30.7% NDF, 24.5% starch). The control treatment (CON) cows were fed the total mixed ration at 0700 h, the high/low treatment (HL) fed HFLS ration at 0700 h and LFHS ration at 2200 h, and the low/high (LH) treatment fed LFHS ration at 0700 h and HFLS ration at 1100 h (LFHS and HFLS rations fed at a 1:3 ratio). No effect was found of treatment on daily milk, but LH decreased milk fat concentration and yield compared with HL (0.2 percentage units and 0.24 kg, respectively). Daily dry matter and NDF intake and total-tract digestibility did not differ between treatments. The HL treatment reduced intake at the morning-conditioned meal after feeding and reduced intake before the evening feeding. A treatment by time of day interaction was found for fecal NDF and indigestible NDF concentration, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), plasma insulin, and fatty acid concentration, and body temperature. The CON and LH treatments increased the daily amplitude of fecal NDF by 1.0 and 1.1 percentage units compared with HL. Plasma insulin was higher in HL than CON at 0100 and 0400 h, but lower at 1300 and 1900 h. Plasma fatty acids were higher for CON than HL at 0700 h and HL was lower than LH at 0400 and 1900 h. Plasma BUN was higher for HL than control at 0100 h, but lower at 1000 h. Body temperature in CON and HL treatments followed a similar diurnal pattern, whereas body temperature for LH was lower than that of HL treatment at 1300 and 2300 h. No daily rhythm was found of fecal indigestible NDF concentration, plasma glucose, or fatty acids detected in the HL treatment, and the amplitude of plasma insulin and BUN was lower for HL compared with CON (70 and 60% decrease, respectively). In conclusion, feeding 2 rations that differ in fiber and fermentable starch modifies diurnal rhythms in dairy cows. Furthermore, feeding a high fiber and low fermentable starch ration during the high intake period of the day may stabilize nutrient absorption across the day.  相似文献

Sorghum silage has been shown to be a good alternative to corn silage for dairy cows; however, studies regarding heifers are insufficiently explored. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate effects of changing forage to concentrate ratio (FOR:CON) in diets based on sorghum silage on N digestibility, rumen fermentation, N balance, C excretion, and microbial N yield in limit-fed dairy heifers. A split-plot 4 × 4 Latin square design with 19-d periods (15 d of adaptation and 4 d of sampling) was conducted with 8 rumen cannulated dairy heifers (age 13.7 ± 0.6 mo and weight 364.8 ± 17.6 kg). Heifers were fed sorghum silage–based diets with 4 FOR:CON (85:15, 75:25, 65:35, and 55:45) balanced for similar metabolizable energy intake per unit of body weight and crude protein concentration. Diets were fed to allow 900 to 1,000 g/d body weight gain and were fed once daily. Total collection of feces and urine was completed on d 15 to 19 to determine N, C, urea N, allantoin, uric acid, and creatinine excretion. Rumen contents were sampled on d 19 at 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 9, 13, 17, 21, and 23 h after feeding to measure pH, volatile fatty acid (VFA), ammonia-N, and free AA concentrations. The pH decreased linearly while ammonia-N and free AA levels increased linearly with decreasing FOR:CON of diets. Although mean total VFA did not differ among treatment diets, molar proportions of VFA did. Acetate proportion decreased while propionate and butyrate increased with decreasing FOR:CON. Intake of N and urea N excretion decreased with decreasing forage proportion in diets while total N excretion, apparent N digestibility, and N retention were not different. Intake of C and excretion in feces (g/d) decreased linearly with decreasing FOR:CON in diets. Creatinine, allantoin, and uric acid excretion were not affected by FOR:CON; however, microbial N yield tended to increase linearly with greater concentrate in diets. Heifers limit fed diets based on sorghum silage demonstrated the effect of available ammonia-N and readily fermentable carbohydrates with subsequent effects on nutrient utilization when different FOR:CON were applied. Based on the presented results, FOR:CON 65:35 had the most suitable balance of available ammonia-N and readily fermentable carbohydrates for the most optimal results.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different diets on beef meat volatile organic compounds (VOC). Seven heifers grazed pasture for twelve months (group P); 8 heifers received grass silage ad libitum indoors for six months and then were switched to pasture for six months (group SiP); 8 heifers received grass silage ad libitum indoors for six months and then switched to pasture and also offered 0.5 of the diet dry matter of concentrate for six months (group SiPC); 8 heifers received concentrate for twelve months (group C). The muscle longissimus dorsi was sampled at slaughter and subjected to VOC analysis by SPME-GC-MS. Some aldeyhdes, ketones and furans deriving from lipid oxidation were affected by the treatments. Skatole, 3-undecanone, cuminic alcohol and 1-butanol, 2-methyl allowed the discrimination between animals fed concentrate from animals fed non-concentrate diets. Germacrene D, a terpenoid, was a marker of grass feeding.  相似文献

Boar taint is the off-odour or off flavour of cooked pork. Currently, the most common method of controlling boar taint is surgical castration. However, immunocastration has been used in some parts of the world as an alternative to surgical castration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensory acceptability of meat from immunocastrated pigs (IM) compared with meat from females (FE), surgically castrated (CM) and entire males (EM). Twenty animals of each type were evaluated by 201 consumers in 20 sessions. Longissimus thoracis muscle of the different animals was cooked in an oven at 180 °C for 10 min. Consumers scored the odour and the flavour of the meat in a 9-point category scale without an intermediate level. There were no significant differences in consumer’s evaluation of meat from IM, CM, and FE. In contrast, EM meat presented a higher percentage of dissatisfied scores and was significantly (P < 0.05) less accepted than meat from CM, IM and FE. Consumers’ acceptability of EM meat was always lower, independently of its androstenone levels. However meat with low levels of androstenone was more accepted that meat with medium or high levels of this substance. It can be concluded that immunocastration produced pork that was accepted by the consumers, and was indistinguishable from pork from CM or FE.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of feeding fresh forage either as pasture plus a concentrate (PAS) or as a silage-based total mixed ration (TMR), combined with either a ruminally inert lipid supplement high in saturated fatty acids (?) or a ruminally protected microalgae containing 22 g of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)/100 g of fatty acids (+) on the fatty acid (FA) composition and oxidation of milk and butter. For the 8 mid-lactation Holstein cows in this study, milk yield was not significantly affected by treatment, averaging 32.3 ± 1.28 kg/d. Milk fat content was higher for PAS?, averaging 5.05 compared with 4.10 ± 0.17% for the mean of other treatments, and was significantly depressed with microalgae supplementation (3.97 vs. 4.69 ± 0.17%). The saturated fatty acid level in the milk of cows fed TMR? was significantly higher than that of the other treatments (66.9 vs. 61.2 g/100 g of FA). The level of monounsaturated FA was lowered by feeding TMR? (27.4 vs. 32.0 g/100 g of FA), whereas levels of polyunsaturated FA were elevated by feeding PAS+ compared with the mean of the other treatments (6.54 vs. 5.07 g/100 g of FA). Feeding the rumen-protected microalgae increased the DHA content of milk more than 4-fold (0.06 to 0.26 g/100 g of FA) with the PAS treatment. The conjugated linoleic acid content of milk was highest for PAS+ compared with the other treatments (4.18 vs. 3.41 g/100 g of FA). In general, the fatty acid composition of butter followed that of milk. Overall, feeding the TMR supplemented with the rumen-protected microalgae increased the levels of volatile products of oxidation in milk and butter. No effect of forage type or microalgae supplementation was observed on the oxidative stability or antioxidant capacity of milk, although the oxidative stability of butter exposed to UV was reduced with microalgae supplementation, particularly with TMR, as assessed by using the ferric reducing ability of plasma assay.  相似文献

Forty-two Holstein calves were assigned randomly to treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of two milk replacer feeding systems (ad libitum vs. twice daily feeding of cold acidified milk replacer) and two housing types (warm vs. cold). The objectives were to compare the cold ad libitum system with a twice daily regimen and to evaluate its use under two housing types. For wk 1 to 5, calves fed ad libitum consumed more dry milk replacer (.86 vs. .65 kg/d), less calf starter (.07 vs. .15 kg/d), and less free choice water (.50 vs. 1.29 kg/d) than calves fed twice daily. Gains for ad libitum vs. twice daily were not different, but were significantly higher for cold than warm housing possibly due to respiratory problems in the barn. Calves did not increase consumption of replacer in response to cold housing. For wk 6 to 8, no differences in intake were observed, but daily gains were higher for calves in warm housing (.74 vs. .49 kg). There were no differences in weights or daily gain at 24, 36, or 52 wk of age. Plasma glucose was higher for calves fed ad libitum (127.1 vs. 110.6 mg/dl). All calves showed two distinct plasma glucose peaks during a day, indicating that calves fed ad libitum may consume two meals per day instead of small frequent meals.Ad libitum feeding of acidified replacer did not result in improved growth despite higher replacer intakes. There were no differences in response to ad libitum feeding in warm or cold housing.  相似文献

This two-phase trial involved 83 Holstein heifers. The rearing phase consisted of two diets (alfalfa silage plus corn grain for ad libitum intake vs. corn silage plus urea for ad libitum intake) and two breeding age groups (13 vs. 16 mo). The lactation phase compared the above treatments plus two lactation feeding systems: concentrate fed individually to production versus a TMR. The heifers were assigned randomly to the rearing phase at 7 wk of age and fed their respective diets until 14 d prepartum. They were placed on preassigned lactation diets 14 d prepartum and remained on the lactation phase for 550 consecutive d. Daily gains and height at the withers were similar between forage groups during the first half of the rearing phase; in the second half, the heifers fed alfalfa silage were taller at the withers. Those fed corn silage consumed less DM and CP throughout the rearing phase and gained more BW than the heifers fed alfalfa in the latter half. There were no differences in daily gain or DMI between the breeding age groups. In the lactation phase, the group fed alfalfa for ad libitum intake consumed more DM and gave more milk during the first 90 d of lactation than heifers fed corn silage. However, after 90 d the difference in cumulative milk production was not significant. There were no differences in milk production. FCM, or DMI between breeding age groups. The cows fed concentrate consumed more DM and gave more milk during the first 90 d of lactation. By 550 d, there were no differences. Feeding high levels of corn silage can cause heifers to have lower DMI in early lactation. These differences tend to disappear during the second lactation.  相似文献

Four rumen-cannulated Holstein cows were fed synthetic zeolite A and NaHCO3 to evaluate their affect on milk production, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, and rate of digesta passage. Treatments were allocated in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement within a 4 × 4 Latin-square design. Treatments consisted of control; 1.0% NaHCO3; 2.0% zeolite; and 1.0% NaHCO3 plus 2.0% zeolite. A total mixed ration with 50:50 concentrate to forage (80% corn silage, 20% haylage) DM was fed.Intake of DM was lower for cows receiving zeolite (18.7 vs. 20.7 kg/d). Decreases were noted in daily milk (26.3 vs. 28.9 kg/d). 4% FCM (23.6 vs. 25.6 kg/d); milk fat yield (.86 vs. .93 kg/d); milk protein yield (.85 vs. .95 kg/d); and milk protein percent (3.21 vs. 3.34) with zeolite. Digestibilities of DM, organic matter, and crude protein were also decreased by zeolite but ADF digestion was unaffected. Rumen pH was increased, ruminal propionate decreased, and acetate:propionate ratio increased by zeolite. All other VFA plus rumen NH3 were not affected by treatment. Decreases due to zeolite were observed in liquid fractional rate of passage and liquid flow rate when measured by Cr-EDTA in the feces. No treatment differences were found in fractional rate of passage of feed particles. Addition of NaHCO3 had no significant effects.  相似文献

Sorghum forage is an alternative crop that is more adapted to drier conditions and more resistant than corn to drought conditions. Thus, sorghum forage maximizes water utilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate sorghum silage (SS), including digestibility and fermentation parameters, in precision-fed dairy heifers. Eight Holstein heifers (13.7 ± 0.6 mo of age and 364.8 ± 17.64 kg of body weight) fitted with rumen cannulas were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square design; treatments were 4 levels of forage to concentrate ratios (85:15, 75:25, 65:35, and 55:45). Rumen contents were sampled at various times to determine pH and volatile fatty acid concentrations. Dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in situ degradation kinetics were compared between SS and corn silage (CS) diets. Fecal total collection was used to estimate apparent total-tract digestibility. Fecal grab samples at 0, 6, 12, and 18 h after feeding were used to estimate total-tract starch digestibility. Amount of concentrate in the diet affected the time that heifers spent eating as well as rumen pH. When the concentrate proportion of the diet increased, eating time and rumen pH decreased linearly. Total volatile fatty acid concentrations were not affected by treatment, but butyrate increased as the proportion of concentrate increased in the diet. Digestibility of DM and starch were higher in diets with lower forage to concentrate ratio, but NDF, acid detergent fiber, and hemicellulose digestibility were not affected. Corn silage had greater DM and NDF digestibility than SS. Also, fractional rate of digestion was faster for CS than SS (2.78 vs. 2.42% per hour, respectively). We conclude that fecal grab samples are suitable for predicting starch digestibility in heifers given the starch levels studied. In addition, SS was an adequate alternative forage in precision-fed dairy heifers with outcomes very similar to CS-based rations.  相似文献
