IDEAS09: Applying a Security Domain Requirements Engineering Process for Software Product Lines

Security requirements management is especially important in software product lines, given that a weakness in security or a security breach can cause problems throughout all the products of a product line. The main contribution of this work is that of illustrating, by describing part of a real case study, a guided, systematic and intuitive way of dealing with security requirements from the early stages of the product line lifecycle by applying our proposed process of security requirements engineering for software product lines (SREPPLine), which makes it easier the variability and reusability management as well as the traceability relations of the security requirements in the product line. It is based on the use of the latest security requirements techniques, together with the integration of the Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408) and ISO/IEC 27001 controls, so that it facilitates the conformance of the product line and its products to the most relevant security standards with regard to the management of security requirements, such as ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 15408.     

IDEAS03: Evaluation of software development through an MDA tool: a case study

Model Driven Architecture (MDA) was born as a standard of Model Driven Development (MDD) to increment the productivity in the software industry. Actually, there exist different models based tools to get an acceptable degree of automation in the applications generation. Many of those tools allow users to build software with high productivity in their respective domains. According their authors, the very challenge of MDA approach and tools is to put emphasis in a satisfactory degree of productivity and, at the same time, increasing others important software qualities such as portability, interoperability, reusability and maintainability. This paper intends to verify the effectiveness of such benefits analyzing the development of a real application using a MDA tool compared with a traditional approach. For analysis purpose, a series of metrics that can help to evaluate the different aspects related to the benefits of MDA was adopted.

The Policy Configuration Language for a Software System Designed to Improve the Engineering of Router Software Components

Over the last decade, the area of programmable networking seems to have matured significantly; it now attracts interest from both academic and industrial institutions. Many projects have either focused on or made use of work done in this area; however, until now, programmable networks have not been used to improve the process of engineering router software. This project does just this. Previous publications have outlined a software system that makes the experimental analysis of routers — and hence router software — more accessible to network researchers. The software system provides a configuration system designed to manage a test-bed consisting of multiple programmable routers. It allows administrators to quickly and easily configure the test-bed using a high-level policy language. This paper discusses this language and presents rationale for design choices. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

SEMI E133—The Process Control System Standard: Deriving a Software Interoperability Standard for Advanced Process Control in Semiconductor Manufacturing

The process control systems (PCS) SEMI Standard E133 facilitates the integration of PCS into current and future fabs. The standard focuses on defining the portion of ldquointerface Brdquo associated with communication with and between components of PCSs. Specifically, the scope of the standard is the functional groups of run-to-run (R2R) control, fault detection (FD), fault classification (FC), fault prediction (FP), and statistical process control (SPC). The standard specifies PCS interfaces (which utilize ldquointerface Brdquo) that will enable these functional groups to interact effectively and share data among themselves and with the other interdependent factory systems, including systems within the process equipment. Key requirements driving the standard specification include the move to service-oriented and event-driven architectures and a need to define PCS capabilities from an input/output (I/O) perspective along functional boundaries defined by commercial applications. The developed standard addresses these requirements and specifies: 1) the capabilities of all five functional groups; 2) a comprehensive I/O interface data model; 3) an XML representation of that data model (E133.1); 4) a set of common services and behavior classes; 5) extensions of the I/O structure and behavior for each functional group; and 6) an application note that provides an example of PCS integration with equipment data acquisition (EDA) data collection. XML, R2R control, and FD implementation examples illustrate that the standard addresses these requirements, with the FD example further illustrating compatibility with EDA ldquointerface Ardquo standards. The standard to date has mature R2R control and FD specifications with key PCS users and providers indicating that they are using the standard extensively.

高阶加时滞模型的系统频域辨识

针对工业控制系统中带有时滞环节的高阶过程对象,由于设计控制器比较困难,文中采用二阶加纯滞后模型的频域辨识方法,通过采样对象的输入和输出数据,分析其频率响应并确定重要频率段。选取若干个重要频率响应点,利用幅频特性估算出系统模型参数,达到模型降阶目的。MATLAB仿真结果表明,文中方法适用于广泛的高阶时滞对象,并具有较好的准确性和鲁棒性。

Lightening the Software Production Process in a CMM Level 5 Framework

The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) is a framework for judging the maturity of the software processes of an organization. This model is often misapplied in practice, being used as a bulwark for rigid approaches to software development. This usually leads to project failure when requirements are set in a rapidly changing environment, or when they are vaguely defined. Agile methodologies behave very well in this kind of environment. In this article we show that Agile methodologies can be applied in a CMM context, specifying how every goal of each Key Process Area of the model can be fulfilled when an Agile methodology such as Xp@Scrum is being used. We also show some metrics from pilote projects at a Motorola Software Centre backing our aiming, and showing the benefits introduced by Agile approaches to software development.     

The communication characteristics of virtual teams: a case study

Organizations are encountering novel external environments requiring flexible structures. A number of organizations have used virtual teams to provide the customer responsiveness, human resource flexibility, and speed in project completion these environments demand. Virtual teams create significant communication challenges for its leaders and members. This research analyzed the communication technologies that the Customer Support Virtual Team (CST) of International Consulting Systems (ICS), the pseudonym for a Fortune 500 organization, uses to support team interaction, the degree to which ICS systems and culture supported CST, and finally, the CST members' mindset toward communication and the methods its leader used to create the trust required for effective team interaction. Interviews revealed that ICS mission, strategy, tasks, reward systems, and attitudes toward technology supported virtual team structure. CST members were provided a suite of robust technologies to facilitate interaction; however, they relied heavily on voice mail and a large number of team, project, and organizational databases supported by Lotus Notes to generate a common language that facilitated task completion
