Global competition is forcing universities to rethink their approach to undergraduate education. Advanced hardware and software tools make it possible for students to grasp fundamental engineering concepts quicker, ultimately enhancing the undergraduate educational experience. The article highlights the roles played by software in DSP education, including symbolic and numeric processing as well as high-level programming of DSPs. In academia, most courses in DSP have historically been restricted to the graduate level and, at that level, the emphasis is often on the mathematics and theoretical issues. Following tradition, most curricula start with circuit theory and progress through continuous-time Fourier analysis to finally reach DSP. Motivation is the key issue. Most engineering students would probably testify that their initial courses are usually only endured, not enjoyed. In a marketplace with many students, educators could use the first course as a “gate.” However, many of the curriculum changes at the entry level have turned this attitude around by involving students in projects and activities that convey some interesting aspect of the engineering process. There has been great interest and effort at many engineering educational institutions to introduce on-line, or “asynchronous” courses. However, at the present time, the vast majority of on-line or distance education courses lack any hands-on activities that require the manipulation of physical artifacts or physical experimentation. This paper describes a series of hands-on Mechatronics experiments associated with an introductory Mechatronics course that could be done “anytime, anywhere” (asynchronously). A new specification was released that, for the first time, "standardizes" the software and firmware infrastructure for a broad base of specialized signal processing devices used within the baseband signal/modem processing engines of an advanced wireless system. Dubbed MHAL, or modem hardware abstraction layer, this open specification facilitates the reuse of the functional software and firmware components that implement a radio's physical layer channel processing across different radio platforms. The benefits of such a specification are obvious: code reuse such as this provides significant savings in both the time to market and cost of development for subsequent radio products or upgrades to existing products. This in turn allows wireless original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to offer their customers radio technologies with new features and capabilities faster and at reduced overall cost. Tools for designing systems around digital signal processor (DSP) chips are discussed. These tools accelerate the design and development of systems with embedded DSPs and can also reduce development costs by letting the engineer focus on a specific application rather than the myriad details of the programming task itself. While a developmental program is running, designers can use higher-level tools-debuggers, simulators, and emulators-to help provide insight into the program's execution and flaws.
