Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA‐45)/ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blend‐layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites have been prepared by solution blending of 1:1 weight ratio of EVA and EPDM with varying amounts of organo LDH (DS‐LDH). X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis suggest the formation of partially exfoliated EVA/EPDM/DS‐LDH nanocomposites. Measurement of mechanical properties of the nanocomposites (3 wt% DS‐LDH content) show that the improvement in tensile strength and elongation at break are 35 and 12% higher than neat EVA/EPDM blends. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis also shows that the storage modulus of the nanocomposites at glass transition temperature is higher compared to the pure blend. Such improvements in mechanical properties have been correlated in terms of fracture behavior of the nanocomposites using scanning electron microscopy analysis. Thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposites is substantially higher compared to neat EVA/EPDM blend, confirming the formation of high‐performance polymer nanocomposites. POLYM. ENG. Fire‐retardant high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) was modified by melt blending with varying amounts of three types of tougheners. The effects of the tougheners on the properties of the fire‐retardant HIPS were studied by mechanical, combustion tests, and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphologies of fracture surfaces and char layers were characterized through scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the impact properties of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)‐containing composites were better than those of ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM)‐containing or ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)‐containing composites. The tensile strength and flexural modulus of the fire‐retardant HIPS decreased evidently with the addition of tougheners. It is found that the compatibility between SBS copolymer and HIPS matrix was best among the three types of tougheners. The addition of SBS had little influence on the thermal property, residue, flammability, and morphology of char layer of the fire‐retardant HIPS, but the addition of EPDM rubber or EVA brought adverse influence on the residue, flammability, and morphology of char layer of the fire‐retardant HIPS, especially for EPDM. Polymer blend technology has been widely used for the past several years for the modification or enhancement of mechanical properties of polymers to obtain an overall balance of properties over those of the constituents. Despite its interesting mechanical and thermal properties, the impact strength of polypropylene leaves wide scope for improvement. A series of blends of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer with an impact grade of isotactic polypropylene (i‐PP) were prepared by single screw extrusion at 0–0.32 volume fraction of the dispersed phase. The mechanical properties such as tensile behavior, elongation‐at‐break, and impact strength of these blends systems as well as crystallinity were evaluated. Crystallinity data have been used in greater depth to support the mechanical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry studies conducted to study the modification in crystallinity of the crystalline component, i‐PP, of the blend revealed that the rubber component of the blend enhanced the crystallinity of i‐PP phase by providing sites for nucleation. Tensile modulus and strength decreased while the impact strength and breaking elongation enhanced with blending elastomer concentration. The improved properties of these PP/EVA blends are encouraging for carrying out further work on this system (composites) and suggest potential high impact strength applications for PP. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new ternary nanocomposite has been developed using ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA‐45) copolymer, and organically modified layered silicate (16 Me‐MMT) from sodium montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT). Wide angle X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic analysis confirmed the intercalation of the polymer chains in between the organosilicate layers and the nanoscale distribution of 16 Me‐MMT in polymer matrix, respectively. The measurement of mechanical properties for 2–8 wt% of 16 Me‐MMT loadings showed a significant increase in tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at different elongations. Such an improvement in mechanical properties has been correlated based on the fracture behavior of nanocomposite by SEM analysis. Thermal stability of EPDM/EVA/layered silicate ternary nanocomposites also showed substantial improvements compared with the neat EPDM/EVA blend, confirming thereby the formation of a high performance nanocomposite. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) foams have important application in electrical, toys, and other industries. Several foams were prepared by ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) lonely, and in combination with styrene‐butadiene and ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer rubbers (SBR and EPDM). The effects of crosslinking and foaming agents and EVA type on density and mechanical properties of the cured foams with two curing systems, peroxide and sulfur‐peroxide with potential use in automotive applications, were studied. The results showed that proposed compounds formulations were foamed properly. The viscosity of the EVA was a key factor for the density values of the formed foams. The densities of the cured foams with peroxide system with various SBR contents were higher when compared with cured foams with sulfur‐peroxide system. With increasing foaming agent, the densities of the foams were reduced for studied curing systems. The densities of the EVA–EPDM foams were lower than those of the EVA–SBR foams in the same studied conditions. Increasing rubber in foam formulation had adverse effect on tensile properties of the foams. The existence of the talc powder in foam formulation had important role on the shape and type of the formed cells and resulted in foams with mostly closed cells. The results of this study help the automotive article designer to produce suitable TPE foam. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 45357.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to obtain ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/multi‐walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/organoclay foams with improved mechanical properties without increase of their density, compared with EVA/MWCNT foams. MWCNT content was fixed at 5 phr in this study. To achieve the objective, EVA was melt‐mixed with MWCNTs and organoclays in a bench kneader. And the obtained EVA/MWCNT/organoclay mixtures were mixed with chemical blowing agent and cross‐linking agent in a two roll‐mill. After being mixed in a two roll‐mill, the mixtures were put in a mold and the foams were obtained by compression‐molding. The effect of organoclay content on the mechanical properties and surface resistivity of EVA/MWCNT (5 phr)/organoclay foams was investigated. The addition of 1 phr organoclays to the EVA/MWCNT (5 phr) foams resulted in the improvement of tensile strength, 100% tensile modulus, tear strength, and compression set without increase of the density. However, further increase in content of organoclay (3 phr) leaded to a deterioration of mechanical properties. Therefore, determining the optimal content of organoclay was very important in order to achieve the main objective of this study. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The effect of mercapto‐modified ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVALSH) on the rheological and dynamic mechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) blends was evaluated at different blend compositions. The addition of 5 phr of EVALSH in the blends resulted in an increase of the melt viscosity and a substantial decrease of the extrudate swell ratio. These results can be attributed to the interactions occurring between the double bond of the NBR phase and the mercapto groups along the EVALSH backbone. The power–law index also presents a slight increase in the presence of EVALSH, indicating a decrease in the pseudoplastic nature of the compatibilized blends. The reactive compatibilization of NBR/EVA blends with EVALSH was also confirmed by the decrease of damping values and an increase of glass transition temperature, in dynamic mechanical analysis. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of this study is to examine the phase modification of styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS) block copolymer by different additives and its influence on morphology and mechanical, and dynamic mechanical properties. The additives chosen are the coumarone–indene (CI), phenol–formaldehyde (PF), paraffin hydrocarbon (PAHY) resins, as well as aromatic oil (AO), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) (VA 28 and 45%), and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber. It is interesting to note that of all the additives, PP has the most prominent effect. The mechanical properties of SEBS polymer are enhanced to a large extent by PP. The value of tan δ maximum of SEBS at both the low and the high temperature transitions is decreased. All the resins and PS increase the storage modulus and the tensile modulus of the SEBS polymer. CI resin and AO modify the hard and soft phases of SEBS polymer. AO, EPDM rubber, and EVA lower the mechanical strength of the SEBS polymer. The results are explained on the basis of morphologystudied with the help of scanning electron microscopy.

Mixing torque, morphology, tensile properties and swelling studies of natural rubber/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer blends were studied. Two series of unvulcanized blends, natural rubber/ethylene vinyl acetate (SMRL/EVA) copolymer blend and epoxidized natural rubber (50% epoxidation)/ethylene vinyl acetate (ENR-50/EVA) copolymer blend were prepared. Blends were prepared using a laboratory internal mixer, Haake Rheomix polydrive with rotor speed of 50 rpm at 120°C. Results indicated that mixing torque value and stabilization torque value in ENR-50 blends are lower than SMRL blends. The process efficiency of ENR-50/EVA blends is better due to less viscous nature of the blend compared to SMRL/EVA blends as indicated in stabilization torque graph. Tensile properties like tensile strength, M100 (modulus at 100% elongation) and E b (elongation at break) increase with increasing EVA fraction in the blend. At the similar blend composition, ENR-50 blend shows better tensile properties than SMRL blends. In oil resistance test, swelling percentage increased with immersion time and rubber composition. At a similar immersion time, ENR-50 blends exhibit better oil resistance compared to SMRL blends. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tensile fractured surface indicated that EVA/ENR-50 blends need higher energy to cause catastrophic failure compared to EVA/SMRL blends. In etched cryogenically fractured surface, size and distribution of holes due to extraction of rubber phase by methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) were studied and holes became bigger as rubber composition increased due to coalescence of rubber particle.  相似文献

The effect of trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) monomer on the tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and morphology of irradiated epoxidized natural rubber (ENR‐50), ethylene‐(vinyl acetate) copolymer (EVA), and an ENR‐50/EVA blend was investigated. The ENR‐50, EVA, and ENR‐50/EVA blend were irradiated by using a 3.0‐MeV electron‐beam apparatus at doses ranging from 20 to 100 kGy. The improvement of tensile properties and morphology with irradiation indicated the advantage of having irradiation‐induced crosslinks in these materials. Observation of the properties studied confirmed that TMPTA was efficient in enhancing the irradiation‐induced crosslinking of ENR‐50, EVA, and the ENR‐50/EVA blend. Addition of TMPTA improved the adhesion between the ENR‐50/EVA blend phases by forcing grafting and crosslinking at a higher irradiation dose (100 kGy). J. VINYL ADDIT. Polymer blend nanocomposites have been developed by solution method using ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA‐45) copolymer, and organically modified layered silicate. Morphological investigation made by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic analysis indicates intercalated structure of EPDM/EVA nanocomposites with partial disorder. Scanning electron microscopic studies exhibit the phase behavior of EPDM/EVA blend nanocomposites. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis shows a significant increase in storage modulus in the rubbery plateau. The decrease in damping (tan δ) value and enhanced glass‐transition temperature (Tg) demonstrate the reinforcing effect of layered silicate in the EPDM/EVA blend matrix. The tensile modulus of these nanocomposites also showed a significant improvement with the filler content. The main chain scission of EPDM/EVA blend nanocomposites compared with the neat EPDM/EVA blend showed substantial improvement in thermal stability in nitrogen, whereas a sizeable increase is observed in air. The present investigation deals with understanding the influence of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) concentration on the mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical, rheological, morphological, gel content, crosslinking density, and compression set properties of dynamically vulcanized ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)/polypropylene (PP) (60/40, w/w) ‐based thermoplastic vulcanizates. It was determined that the values of crosslinking density, gel content, tensile strength, Young's modulus, elongation at break, and viscosity increased; whereas that of compression set, melting temperature, enthalpy of melting, crystallinity, and damping factor decreased with increased addition of VTMS in the EPDM/PP‐based thermoplastic vulcanizate. This is attributed to the physical crosslinking caused because of VTMS grafting on EPDM and chemical crosslinking induced by VTMS between PP and EPDM. This has been confirmed by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy spectra, whereas the thermomechanical and scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed increased compatibility between EPDM and PP on the addition of VTMS. Dynamically vulcanized Nylon 1010/ethylene‐vinyl acetate rubber (EVM)/SiO2 nanocomposites were prepared. Maleic anhydride grafted ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA‐g‐MA) and nano‐silica (SiO2) was used as a compatibilizer and a filler, and silane coupling agent (KH550, 3‐triethoxysilylpropylamine) was used to improve the dispersion of SiO2 in the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and rheology analysis and mechanical properties test. SEM and AFM images showed that the compatibility between Nylon 1010 and EVM was improved by adding the compatibilizer. An increase in SiO2 content and the addition of the compatibilizer led to an increase in the tensile strength of the nanocomposite. A nanocomposite based on Nylon 1010/EVM/DCP (30/70/0.8) with tensile strength of 16.3 MPa and elongation at break of 180% was obtained by the addition of 15 phr EVA‐g‐MA and 40 phr SiO2. The non‐isothermal crystallization processes of Nylon/EVM blend were investigated by DSC. It was observed that EVM rubber could act as heterogeneous nuclei for Nylon which was more effective in Nylon/EVM/DCP blend than in Nylon/EVM blend. POLYM. ENG. This article describes the impact and dynamic mechanical properties of rubber‐modified binary blends of polypropylene (PP). Two conventional elastomers [viz. ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM)] were used as an impact modifier for PP. It is clearly indicated by the results that EPDM is better than EVA as an impact modifier of PP. Analysis of data of dynamic mechanical properties and impact properties at various compositions of the blends revealed a direct correlation between impact properties and dynamic mechanical loss tangent. The energy dissipation due to viscoelastic relaxation is therefore suggested as a mechanism of impact toughening of PP, in addition to the other commonly known mechanisms of toughening (viz. shear yielding and crazing induced by deformation of rubber‐phase domains). © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of Borax on the mechanical and ablation properties of three different ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) compounds containing 20 phr carbon fiber, 20 phr Kevlar or 10 phr/ 10 phr carbon fiber/ Kevlar was investigated. All formulations contained 30 phr fumed silica powder and 10 phr paraffinic oil. It was found that adding Borax to the composite samples containing carbon fiber or Kevlar fiber or their mixture with an equal ratio can increase the tensile strength, elastic modulus and hardness with a slightly decrease in the elongation at break of the rubber samples. The results of thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) on the various samples showed significant increase in the char yield at 670°C by adding Borax to the rubber compounds. Moreover, ablation resistance of samples was also improved by increasing Borax content. Meanwhile, density and thermal conductivity of the insulator were also reduced up to about 10% when the carbon fiber was replaced with the Borax. The results indicated that composites containing Kevlar have high storage modulus and produce compact and stable char. EPDM rubber composite containing Borax (20 phr), carbon fiber (10 phr), and Kevlar (10 phr) showed thermal and ablative properties comparable with those of the asbestos‐ filled EPDM. The thermal conductivity and ablation rate of the above‐ mentioned sample were 0.287 W/m/K and 0.13 mm/s respectively. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41936.  相似文献

The graft copolymerization of 2‐dimethylamino ethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) onto ethylene propylene diene mononer rubber (EPDM) was carried out in toluene via solution polymerization technique at 70°C, using dibenzoyl peroxide as initiator. The synthesized EPDM rubber grafted with poly[DMAEMA] (EPDM‐g‐PDMAEMA) was characterized with 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The EPDM‐g‐PDMAEMA was incorporated into EPDM/butadiene acrylonitrile rubber (EPDM/NBR) blend with different blend ratios, where the homogeneity of such blends was examined with scanning electron microscopy and DSC. The scanning electron micrographs illustrate improvement of the morphology of EPDM/NBR rubber blends as a result of incorporation of EPDM‐g‐PDMAEMA onto that blend. The DSC trace exhibits one glass transition temperature (Tg) for EPDM/NBR blend containing EPDM‐g‐PDMAEMA, indicating improvement of homogeneity. The physico‐mechanical properties after and before accelerated thermal aging of the homogeneous, and inhomogeneous EPDM/NBR vulcanizates with different blend ratios were investigated. The physico‐mechanical properties of all blend vulcanizates were improved after and before accelerated thermal aging, in presence of EPDM‐g‐PDMAEMA. Of all blend ratios under investigation EPDM/NBR (75/25) blend possesses the best physico‐mechanical properties together with the best (least) swelling (%) in brake fluid. Swelling behavior of the rubber blend vulcanizates in motor oil and toluene was also investigated. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Epoxidized natural rubber/Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (ENR‐50/EVA) blends with different ratios were prepared by using a Haake internal mixer. The effect of the blend ratio on the processing, tensile properties (such as tensile strength, elongation at break, Young's modulus and stress–strain behavior), morphology, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal properties has been investigated. The tensile properties increase with the increase of EVA content, whereas the stabilization torque increases with the increase of ENR‐50 content in the blend. In 40:60 and 50:50 blend of ENR‐50/EVA, both the phases exist as continuous phases, producing a co‐continuous morphology. At these blend ratio, the drastic change in properties were noted, indicating that the phase inversion occurs. The results on dynamic mechanical properties revealed that the blends are compatible. Blending of ENR‐50 and EVA lead to the improvement in thermal stability and 50:50 blend ratios is the most stable blend. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 99: 1504–1515, 2006  相似文献

The photoinitiated crosslinking of halogen‐free flame‐retarded ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) by the phosphorous‐nitrogen compound NP28 in the presence of photoinitiator and crosslinker and characterization of the related properties have been investigated by gel determination, heat extension test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical measurement, and thermal aging test. The photocrosslinking efficiency of EVA/NP28 blend and various factors affecting the crosslinking process, such as photoinitiator, crosslinker, NP28 content, and irradiation temperature, were studied in detail and optimized by comparison of gel content. The results show that the EVA/NP28 blend filled with 28.2 wt % NP28 with a thickness of 1.6 mm is homogeneously photocrosslinked to a gel content of above 80 wt % with 4.8 s UV‐irradiation under optimum conditions. The data from TGA, mechanical measurement, and thermal aging test give evidence that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of photocrosslinked EVA/NP28 blend are much better than those of the unphotocrosslinked one.© 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (EVA), poly(ethylene‐co‐octene) (POE), and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends were processed in a molten state process using a corotating twin‐screw extruder to assess both the balance of mechanical properties and physical interactions in the melt state. Tensile measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and oscillatory rheometry were performed. By means of flow curves, the parameters of the power law as well as the distribution of relaxation times were assessed with the aid of a nonlinear regularization method. The mechanical properties for the EVA‐POE blend approximated the values for POE, while inclusion of PVC shifted the modulus values to those of neat EVA. The rise in modulus was corroborated by the PVC phase dispersion as solid particles that act as a reinforcement for the ternary blend. The rheological properties in the molten state show that the POE does not present molecular entanglement effects and so tends both to diminish the EVA mechanical properties and increase the fluidity of the blend. However, the addition of PVC both restored the EVA typical pseudoplastic feature and promoted the increase in the viscosity and the mechanical properties of the ternary blend. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
