Proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and liquid hydrogen are gaining attention as a power generation system and alternative fuel of ship. This study proposes a novel PEMFC system, integrated with the organic Rankine cycle–direct expansion cycle (ORC-DEC), which exploits cold exergy from liquid hydrogen and low temperature waste heat generated by the PEMFC for application in a liquid hydrogen fueled ship. A thermodynamic model of each subsystem was established and analyzed from the economic, energy, and exergy viewpoints. Moreover, parametric analysis was performed to identify the effects of certain key parameters, such as the working fluid in the ORC, pressure exerted by the fuel pump, cooling water temperature of the PEMFC, and the stack current density on the system performance. The results showed that the proposed system could generate 221 kW of additional power. The overall system achieved an exergy and energy efficiency of 43.52 and 40.45%, respectively. The PEMFC system had the largest exergy destruction, followed by the cryogenic heat exchanger. Propane showed the best performance among the several investigated ORC working fluids and the system performance improved with the increase in the cooling water temperature of the PEMFC. The economic analysis showed that the average payback time of ORC-DEC was 11.2 years and the average net present value (NPV) was $295,268 at liquid hydrogen costing $3 to $7, showing the potential viability of the system.  相似文献

As a high-efficiency and eco-friendly way of energy conversion, fuel cell has received much attention in recent years. A novel residential combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system, consisting of a biomass gasifier, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack, an absorption chiller and auxiliary equipment, is proposed. Based on the established thermodynamic models, the effects of operating parameters, biomass materials type and moisture content on the system performance are closely investigated. Overall system performance is then compared under four different operating modes. From the viewpoints of energy utilization and CO2 emissions, the CCHP mode has the best performance with corresponding energy efficiency of 57.41% and CO2 emission index of 0.516 ton/MWh. Exergy analysis results suggest that the optimization and transformation on the gasifier and PEMFC stack should be encouraged. Energy and exergy assessments in this research provide pragmatic guidance to the performance improvement of the integrated CCHP systems with PEMFC. This research also achieves a reasonable combination of efficient cogeneration, green hydrogen production and full recovery of low grade waste heat.  相似文献

For analyzing the performance of 120 kW polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and its air supply system, an air system test bench was built, then applied on a 120 kW PEMFC system test bench composed of air supply subsystem, hydrogen supply subsystem, stack, cooling subsystem and electronic control subsystem. The strategy composed of feedforward table and Piecewise proportional integral (PI) feedback control strategy is employed to regulate the flow rate and pressure of air supply system. Firstly, the air compressor map and the mapping relationship between the speed of air compressor, opening of back-pressure valve and stack current are obtained by carrying out experiments on the PEMFC air system bench. Then, the max output performance, steady-state performance, the startup performance, the dynamic response abilities of PEMFC system are tested, respectively. During the experiments, performances under different test conditions were analyzed by comparing parameters such as voltage inconsistency, average voltage, minimum voltage, voltage range, net power of the PEMFC system, and stack power. The test results show that the air supply system can provide qualified flow rate and pressure for the PEMFC stack. The peak power of the stack is 120 kW and net power of the system is 97 kW when the current is 538 A. The response time from rated net power to idle net power is 12 s and from idle net power to rated net power is 23 s. The overshoot of average voltage and minimum voltage in the process of increasing load is both 0.01 V, which are 0.015 V and 0.02 V lower than that when the load is decreased, respectively. The dynamic response speed and stability of the PEMFC system in the process of decreasing the load are better than those in the process of increasing the load.  相似文献

A novel proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system that employs a turbocharger to reuse waste energy is proposed. This study is focused on optimal placement of the PEMFC turbocharger, using either the hydrogen feed stream or the stack outlet as the motive force. A one-dimensional isothermal two-phase model for a PEMFC and an isenthalpic model for the turbocharger are developed for system analysis. To find a better energy source, the system efficiency, power generation, and interaction with the balance of plant (BOP) are considered. To evaluate the feasibility of both systems, an exergy analysis is also performed. The results show that the system efficiency is higher when the turbocharger is installed after the hydrogen tank and that the amount of power generation is also larger when the turbocharger is located in the stack outlet. For the exergy analysis, the case for the turbocharger installed after the hydrogen tank shows higher performance. Therefore, it is preferable to install the turbocharger after the hydrogen tank.  相似文献

In this paper, a fuel cell power generation system fed by hydrogen is analyzed by different performance criteria over the entire range of potential operating conditions. First law efficiency and net power output are considered for conventional energetic indices of performance, and exergy destruction rate is taken into consideration as an exergetic performance criteria. A new exergetic criterion called the exergetic performance coefficient (EPC) is introduced and is applied to the system model based on zero-dimensional approach. The system model consists of the following components: fuel cell stack, afterburner, fuel and air compressors, and heat exchangers. The effects of the operating conditions on the system performance are studied parametrically. The obtained results based on the exergetic performance coefficient criterion are compared with first law efficiency, power output and exergy destruction rate. Results show that design insights of fuel cell systems can be considerably improved when conventional energetic analyses are supplemented with EPC criterion.  相似文献

An integrated ethanol fuelled proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) power system was investigated following a second law exergy analysis. The system was assumed to have the typical design for automobile applications and was comprised of a vaporizer/mixer, a steam reformer, a CO-shift reactor, a CO-remover (PROX) reactor, a PEMFC and a burner. The exergy analysis was applied for different PEMFC power and voltage outputs assuming the ethanol steam reforming at about 600 K and the CO-shift reaction at about 400 K. A detailed parametric analysis of the plant is presented and operation guidelines are suggested for effective performance. In every case, the exergy analysis method is proved to allow an accurate allocation of the deficiencies of the subsystems of the plant and serves as a unique tool for essential technical improvements.  相似文献

To deeply understand the influences of power converter's low frequency current ripple (LFCR) and harmonics on a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) in its power conditioning system (PCS), a comprehensive measurement and analysis of the influences of LFCR and harmonics on PEMFC's performance and durability is investigated in this paper. Based on an equivalent circuit model of PEMFC stack and a mechanism model for evaluating the LFCR effects on the PEMFC, this paper studies primarily and systematically the comprehensive influences of LFCR and harmonics on PEMFC performances and durability, such as (1) degrading the PEMFC performance, (2) shortening the lifetime of PEMFC, (3) reducing the stack output power, (4) lowing its availability efficiency, (5) producing more heat and raising the PEMFC temperature, (6) consuming more fuel, and (7) decreasing the fuel utilization. Finally, a Horizon 300 W PEMFC stack is implemented and tested.  相似文献

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack is a key component in the fuel cell/battery hybrid vehicle. Thermal management and optimized control of the PEMFC under real driving cycle remains a challenging issue. This paper presents a new hybrid vehicle model, including simulations of diver behavior, vehicle dynamic, vehicle control unit, energy control unit, PEMFC stack, cooling system, battery, DC/DC converter, and motor. The stack model had been validated against experimental results. The aim is to model and analyze the characteristics of the 30 kW PEMFC stack regulated by its cooling system under actual driving conditions. Under actual driving cycles (0–65 kW/h), 33%–50% of the total energy becomes stack heat; the heat dissipation requirements of the PEMFC stack are high and increase at high speed and acceleration. A PID control is proposed; the cooling water flow rate is adjusted; the control succeeded in stabilizing the stack temperature at 350 K at actual driving conditions. Constant and relative lower inlet cooling water temperature (340 K) improves the regulation ability of the PID control. The hybrid vehicle model can provide a theoretical basis for the thermal management of the PEMFC stack in complex vehicle driving conditions.  相似文献

The thermal management of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is crucial for fuel cell vehicles. This paper presents a new simulation model for the water-cooled PEMFC stacks for automotive vehicles and cooling systems. The cooling system model considers both the cooling of the stack and cooling of the compressed air through the intercooler. Theoretical analysis was carried out to calculate the heat dissipation requirements for the cooling system. The case study results show that more than 99.0% of heat dissipation requirement is for thermal management of the PEMFC stack; more than 98.5% of cooling water will be distributed to the stack cooling loop. It is also demonstrated that controlling cooling water flow rate and stack inlet cooling water temperature could effectively satisfy thermal management constraints. These thermal management constraints are differences in stack inlet and outlet cooling water temperature, stack temperature, fan power consumption, and pump power consumption.  相似文献

The current study deals with the thermodynamic modeling of an innovative integrated plant based on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy supply. For the suggested innovative plant the energy, and exergy simulations are fully extended and the plant comprehensively analyzed. According to mathematical simulations of the proposed plant, a MATLAB code has been extended. The results indicate that under considered initial conditions, the efficiencies of SOFC and net power generation calculated 58% and 78%, respectively and the CO2-capture rate is obtained 79 kg/h. This study clearly shows that the integrated system reached high efficiency while having zero emissions. In addition, the efficiencies and net amount of power generation, cooling or heating output and SOFC power generation are discussed in detail as a function of different variables such utilization factor, air/fuel ratio, or SOFC inlet temperature. For enhancing the power production efficiency of SOFC, the net electricity, and CCHP exergy efficiency the plant should run in higher utilization factor and lower air/fuel ration also it's important to approximately set SOFC temperature to its ideal temperature.  相似文献

In this study, a comprehensive performance analysis of a transportation system powered by a PEM fuel cell engine system is conducted thermodynamically both through energy and exergy approaches. This system includes system components such as a compressor, humidifiers, pressure regulator, cooling system and the fuel cell stack. The polarization curves are studied in the modeling and compared with the actual data taken from the literature works before proceeding to the performance modeling. The system performance is investigated through parametric studies on energy, exergy and work output values by changing operating temperature, operating pressure, membrane thickness, anode stoichiometry, cathode stoichiometry, humidity, reference temperature and reference pressure. The results show that the exergy efficiency increases with increase of temperature from 323 to 353 K by about 8%, pressure from 2.5 to 4 atm by about 5%, humidity from 97% to 80% by about 10%, and reference state temperature from 253 to 323 K by about 3%, respectively. In addition, the exergy efficiency increases with decrease of membrane thickness from 0.02 to 0.005 mm by about 9%, anode stoichiometry from 3 to 1.1 by about 1%, and cathode stoichiometry from 3 to 1.1 by about 35% respectively.  相似文献

With the rising usage of fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to develop new technologies specifically based on renewable energy sources to power the vehicles running on fuel. A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that is used to convert the chemical energy of a fuel directly to electric power. Fuels cells possess advantages such as smaller size, high efficiency, silent operation, etc. However, there can be significant variations in the size and power output of the fuel cells depending upon the application. The focus of this paper is to estimate the performance of an integrated system comprising of Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel cell (PEMFC) and vapour adsorption refrigeration system to produce electric output and cooling effect simultaneously. The adsorption system in this study is based on activated carbon and methanol combination. The effect of operating parameters such as the operating temperature, current density and evaporator temperature on the energy and exergy efficiency of the system is presented. The study shows a remarkable improvement in the performance of the integrated system compared to PEMFC alone. The results show that the system energy and exergy efficiency decrease as the current density value increases. Maximum system energy and exergy efficiency of 63.01% and 29.88% are achieved. In addition, a maximum energy efficiency of 65.39% was reported at an evaporator temperature of 5 °C and a current density of 0.8 A/cm2.  相似文献

A 10-cell proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack with 10 cathode flow channels is employed to investigate the effect of airflow inlet manifold configuration on the overall performance. Four different types of airflow inlet manifold with a 90° turn are considered. First, the flow patterns according to the manifold configuration are numerically sought. The computational result for the improved inlet manifold predicts about 8.5% increase in the uniformity of the airflow distribution. The experiments are carried out to confirm the numerical predictions by measuring actual airflow distributions through the fuel cell stack. The polarization curve and the power curve for the 10-cell PEMFC are also obtained to determine the effect of inlet manifold configuration on the actual performance. The maximum power output increases by up to 10.3% on using the improved airflow inlet manifold.  相似文献

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks are not widely used in the field of transportation industry, due to their limited power. Thus, the PEMFC stacks usually connected in parallel or series to meet the load demand power in high-power applications. The hydrogen consumption of multi-stack fuel cells (MFCs) system is related to the efficiency and output power. In addition, the efficiency of PEMFC depends on the applied voltage and other parameters. Consequently, the hydrogen consumption of system changes with varying load, because the system parameters are also varying. It makes reducing the fuel consumption of system a challenging assignment. In order to achieve the goal of minimizing fuel consumption of parallel-connected PEMFCs system, this paper proposes a novel power distribution strategy based on forgetting factor recursive least square (FFRLS) online identification. The FFRLS algorithm is based on data-driven and uses real-time data of the system to improve the estimation accuracy of PEMFC system parameters. On the test bench of parallel-connected PEMFCs system consists of two 300 W PEMFC stacks, PEMFC stack controller, DC/DC converters, and DSP controller etc., a multi-index performance test and comparative analysis are carried out. The results showed that, the performance of proposed power allocation strategy has been successfully validated. In addition, compared with the power average and daisy chain algorithms, the proposed online identification power distribution method can get more satisfactory results. Such as, reducing the hydrogen consumption and improving efficiency.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel planar proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack designed for portable electronic devices, consisting of twenty homemade membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) arranged on a planar surface and three printed circuit boards (PCBs, including anode, interlayer and cathode PCBs) used to load these MEAs. The current collectors and electrical connectors are manufactured using printed circuit technology. The inlet holes of reaction gases are also machined on PCB substrates. The output performance tests are performed on the MEAs and the assembled planar PEMFC stack. The results show that the power densities of the MEAs and the planar PEMFC stack are 0.6 W/cm2 and 0.361 W/cm2 at rated voltage under ambient temperature and forced convection air conditions, respectively. The stability tests are also conducted on the planar PEMFC stack, and the results show no significant fluctuations in output current. The feasibility of the application of planar PEMFC stacks in portable electronic devices is preliminarily demonstrated, and the improvement directions for further improving the output performance are proposed accordingly.  相似文献

This paper describes a structured procedure to optimize the internal structure (relative sizes, spacings), single cells thickness, and external shape (aspect ratios) of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack so that net power is maximized. The constructal design starts from the smallest (elemental) level of a fuel cell stack (the single PEMFC), which is modeled as a unidirectional flow system, proceeding to the pressure drops experienced in the headers and gas channels of the single cells in the stack. The polarization curve, total and net power, and efficiencies are obtained as functions of temperature, pressure, geometry and operating parameters. The optimization is subjected to fixed stack total volume. There are two levels of optimization: (i) the internal structure, which accounts for the relative thicknesses of two reaction and diffusion layers and the membrane space, together with the single cells thickness, and (ii) the external shape, which accounts for the external aspect ratios of the PEMFC stack. The flow components are distributed optimally through the available volume so that the PEMFC stack net power is maximized. Numerical results show that the optimized single cells internal structure and stack external shape are “robust” with respect to changes in stoichiometric ratios, membrane water content, and total stack volume. The optimized internal structure and single cells thickness, and the stack external shape are results of an optimal balance between electrical power output and pumping power required to supply fuel and oxidant to the fuel cell through the stack headers and single-cell gas channels. It is shown that the twice maximized stack net power increases monotonically with total volume raised to the power 3/4, similarly to metabolic rate and body size in animal design.  相似文献

Anodic fuel recirculation system has a significant role on the parasitic power of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this paper, different fuel supply systems for a PEMFC including a mechanical compressor, an ejector and an electrochemical pump are evaluated. Furthermore, the performances of ejector and electrochemical pump are studied at different operating conditions including operating temperature of 333 K–353 K, operating pressure of 2 bar–4 bar, relative humidity of 20%–100%, stack cells number from 150 to 400 and PEMFC active area of 0.03 m2–0.1 m2. The results reveal that higher temperature of PEMFC leads to lower power consumption of the electrochemical pump, because activation over-potential of electrochemical pump decreases at higher temperatures. Moreover, higher operating temperature and pressure of PEMFC leads to higher stoichiometric ratio and hydrogen recirculation ratio because the motive flow energy in ejector enhances. In addition, the recirculation ratio and hydrogen stoichiometric ratio increase, almost linearly, with increase of anodic relative humidity. Utilization of mechanical compressor leads to lower system efficiency than other fuel recirculating devices due to more power consumption. Utilization of electrochemical pump in anodic recirculation system is a promising alternative to ejector due to lower noise level, better controllability and wide range of operating conditions.  相似文献
