CAD/CAM: managerial challenges and research issues

Results are reported of an exploratory investigation into the managerial problems of integrating computer-aided design (broadly construed to include engineering design and drafting), and computer-aided manufacturing (encompassing machine control, materials handling, manufacturing scheduling, planning and administration, testing and quality assurance). The focus is on engineering, design, fabrication, assembly, and test of printed circuit boards used in the electronics industry and on design and fabrication of hydraulic tubing in the aircraft industry. Nine US electronics businesses and four US aircraft companies were visited with the aim of synthesizing the elements of `best practice'. Managerial problems and research issues are identified at each of five key levels of organizational learning: skills, procedures, structure, strategy, and culture

A high-resolution color CRT for CAD/CAM use

A 19-V color CRT with 64-kHz scanning was developed for CAD/CAM use. A new gun was designed by a three-dimensional phase space method and with the aid of a three-dimensional beam tracing computer simulation. A newly developed oxide cathode was applied to the gun in order to improve the life performance of cathode emission. The spot size at 2 percent of peak was reduced to 0.8 mm at 200 µA. A significant reduction of misconvergence to 0.2 mm was achieved through the use of a small beam-to-beam gun spacing, a new deflection yoke, and a new frittable getter.     

Qualification of worm gears in CAD/CAM systems

The advance of coordinate measurement technique is caused by the fact that by the introduction of CAD/CAM and CAQ systems connected to the technological process planning the need arises for quick, precise and automated inspection methods of free form surfaces. In consequence of the advance of flexible manufacturing systems and CAD/CAM systems as well as the propagation of 3D measuring machines, there is increasing demand for automated geometrical inspection of helicoid surfaces. The geometrical inspections and qualifications of the mostly used cylindrical and conical helicoid surfaces — having constant pitch — on 3D coordinate measuring machines are an indispensable condition of the automated production of possible versions (various types, geometrical parameters) of helicoid surfaces.

Managing change with patterns

Costs associated with modifying software are a large part of an organization's software development budget. Since change is to be expected, the costs associated with change can be reduced by preparing for it. Software design patterns associate a problem and context with a solution to document good design practices. Patterns allow software designers to evaluate solutions in terms of the aspects of the system most likely to vary. This article uses the INgage^TM Intelligent Peripheral Prototype to demonstrate how the use of two patterns, Layers and Mediator, facilitated a major change to the protocol stacks, and isolated object interactions to make them more maintainable

CAD/CAM for dental restorations-some of the curious challenges

Computer-aided design and manufacturing for dental restorations has opened a new world of possibilities--some that appeal to engineers and clinicians and some that have created some interesting challenges. The objective of this overview is to briefly describe a system being developed by the Universities of Maryland and Minnesota which is capable of producing dental crowns. Some of the challenges and difficulties that have arisen during the development activities will be addressed. The final focus will be on some of the questions that, because of the new technology, can now be addressed and are presenting new challenges.

Managing CAD systems in mechanical design engineering

The results of an investigation into the management and use of CAD systems in ten manufacturing companies are reported. The goal of the research is to understand how engineers and managers perceive CAD systems, how work is restructured when CAD is used, and what barriers prevent the effective use of CAD systems. An introduction to CAD systems is presented, followed by a brief review of the latest literature relating to computer-aided design
