This paper is a study of the existence of polynomial time Boolean connective functions for languages. A languageL has an AND function if there is a polynomial timef such thatf(x,y) L x L andy L. L has an OR function if there is a polynomial timeg such thatg(x,y) xL oryL. While all NP complete sets have these functions, Graph Isomorphism, which is probably not complete, is also shown to have both AND and OR functions. The results in this paper characterize the complete sets for the classes Dp and pSAT[O(logn)] in terms of AND and OR and relate these functions to the structure of the Boolean hierarchy and the query hierarchies. Also, this paper shows that the complete sets for the levels of the Boolean hierarchy above the second level cannot have AND or OR unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses. Finally, most of the structural properties of the Boolean hierarchy and query hierarchies are shown to depend only on the existence of AND and OR functions for the NP complete sets. The first author was supported in part by NSF Research Grants DCR-8520597 and CCR-88-23053, and by an IBM Graduate Fellowship.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce general techniques for extending classes of polynomially solvable SAT instances. We generalize the approach of Gallo and Scutellà, who defined the hierarchy { i }, where l corresponds to the Generalized Horn class. We propose a family of polynomial hierarchies, where a polynomial hierarchy { i } is a sequence of polynomially solvable classes that cover the whole set of CNF formulas, and such that i i+1 fori0. Following a different approach, based on a new decomposition technique, we define the class of Split-Horn formulas, which is an extension of l. We discuss and compare the basic properties of the proposed classes; polynomial time algorithms for recognition and solution are provided.  相似文献

We study the approximation of the smallest eigenvalue of a Sturm–Liouville problem in the classical and quantum settings. We consider a univariate Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problem with a nonnegative function q from the class C2 ([0,1]) and study the minimal number n() of function evaluations or queries that are necessary to compute an -approximation of the smallest eigenvalue. We prove that n()=(–1/2) in the (deterministic) worst case setting, and n()=(–2/5) in the randomized setting. The quantum setting offers a polynomial speedup with bit queries and an exponential speedup with power queries. Bit queries are similar to the oracle calls used in Grovers algorithm appropriately extended to real valued functions. Power queries are used for a number of problems including phase estimation. They are obtained by considering the propagator of the discretized system at a number of different time moments. They allow us to use powers of the unitary matrix exp((1/2) iM), where M is an n× n matrix obtained from the standard discretization of the Sturm–Liouville differential operator. The quantum implementation of power queries by a number of elementary quantum gates that is polylog in n is an open issue. In particular, we show how to compute an -approximation with probability (3/4) using n()=(–1/3) bit queries. For power queries, we use the phase estimation algorithm as a basic tool and present the algorithm that solves the problem using n()=(log –1) power queries, log 2–1 quantum operations, and (3/2) log –1 quantum bits. We also prove that the minimal number of qubits needed for this problem (regardless of the kind of queries used) is at least roughly (1/2) log –1. The lower bound on the number of quantum queries is proven in Bessen (in preparation). We derive a formula that relates the Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problem to a weighted integration problem. Many computational problems may be recast as this weighted integration problem, which allows us to solve them with a polylog number of power queries. Examples include Grovers search, the approximation of the Boolean mean, NP-complete problems, and many multivariate integration problems. In this paper we only provide the relationship formula. The implications are covered in a forthcoming paper (in preparation).PACS: 03.67.Lx, 02.60.-x.  相似文献

The time-honored Chomsky hierarchy has long shown its value as a structural tool in formal languages and automata theory, and gained followers in various areas. We show here how very similar hierarchies can be obtained for families of sets of piecewise continuous functions. We use systems of ordinary differential equations in the same way that automata are used in establishing the traditional Chomsky hierarchy. A functional memory is provided by state-dependent delays which are used in a novel way, paired with certain state components, giving memory structures similar to push-down stores and Turing machine tapes. The resulting machine model may be viewed as a functional computing machine, with functional input, functional memory and, though this is not emphasized here, functional output.  相似文献

In this paper we describe a deterministic algorithm for solving any 1–1 packet-routing problem on ann ×n mesh in 2n–2 steps using constant-size queues. The time bound is optimal in the worst case. The best previous deterministic algorithm for this problem required time 2n+(n/q) using queues of size (q) for any 1qn, and the best previous randomized algorithm required time 2n+(logn) using constant-size queues. This research was supported by the Clear Center at UTD, DARPA Contracts N00014-91-J-1698 and N00014-92-J-1799, Air Force Contract F49620-92-J-0125, Army Contract DAAL-03-86-K-0171, an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award with matching funds from AT&T and IBM, and by the Texas Advanced Research Program under Grant No. 3972. In many distributed-memory parallel computers and high-speed communication networks, the exact structure of the underlying communication network may be ignored. These systems assume that the network creates a complete communication graph between the processors, in which passing messages is associated with communication latencies. In this paper we explore the impact of communication latencies on the design of broadcasting algorithms for fully connected message-passing systems. For this purpose, we introduce thepostal model that incorporates a communication latency parameter 1. This parameter measures the inverse of the ratio between the time it takes an originator of a message to send the message and the time that passes until the recipient of the message receives it. We present an optimal algorithm for broadcasting one message in systems withn processors and communication latency , the running time of which is (( logn)/log( + 1)). For broadcastingm 1 messages, we first examine several generalizations of the algorithm for broadcasting one message and then analyze a family of broadcasting algorithms based on degree-d trees. All the algorithms described in this paper are practical event-driven algorithms that preserve the order of messages.  相似文献

Summary The rational index L of a non-empty language L is a function of into , whose asymptotic behavior can be used to classify languages. We prove that the languages associated to Vector Addition System or Petri nets have rational indexes bounded by polynomials. This situation should be contrasted with the case of context-free languages. Indeed some context-free languages like the Greibach's languages have rational indexes bounded by polynomials. But some other context-free languages have rational indexes in exp n and the generators of the rational cone of context-free languages have rational indexes in exp n 2/ln n. We give an upper bound and a lower bound on the rational index of each term of an infinite sequence of V.A.S. languages, such that any V.A.S. language can be obtained as the image by a rational transduction of one of these languages.  相似文献

The -algebras are interesting algebraic structures. They were introduced by Esteva, Godo, and Montagna. These algebras are closely related to the well-known MV-algebras and -algebras. They have two sets of operations and reduct to one set is an MV-algebra and to the other one is a -algebra.Other important reducts of -algebras are so-called P-algebras (an MV-algebras enriched with product connective) and -algebras (-algebras with additional involutive negation). The definition of -algebras is based on its MV-algabraic reduct and the additional identities. In this paper we present how to base this definition on the other reducts we mention above. We present minimal sets of conditions which has to be added to the defining conditions of those reducts in order to obtain -algebras.  相似文献

Robot Awareness in Cooperative Mobile Robot Learning   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Most of the straight-forward learning approaches in cooperative robotics imply for each learning robot a state space growth exponential in the number of team members. To remedy the exponentially large state space, we propose to investigate a less demanding cooperation mechanism—i.e., various levels of awareness—instead of communication. We define awareness as the perception of other robots locations and actions. We recognize four different levels (or degrees) of awareness which imply different amounts of additional information and therefore have different impacts on the search space size ((0), (1), (N), o(N),1 where N is the number of robots in the team). There are trivial arguments in favor of avoiding binding the increase of the search space size to the number of team members. We advocate that, by studying the maximum number of neighbor robots in the application context, it is possible to tune the parameters associated with a (1) increase of the search space size and allow good learning performance. We use the cooperative multi-robot observation of multiple moving targets (CMOMMT) application to illustrate our method. We verify that awareness allows cooperation, that cooperation shows better performance than a purely collective behavior and that learned cooperation shows better results than learned collective behavior.  相似文献

This paper studies Fool's models of combinatory logic, and relates them to Hindley's D-completeness problem. A fool's model is a family of sets of formulas, closed under condensed detachment. Alternatively, it is a model ofCL in naive set theory. We examine Resolution; and the P-W problem. A sequel shows T is D-complete; also, its extensions. We close with an implementation FMO of these ideas.  相似文献

Semantics connected to some information based metaphor are well-known in logic literature: a paradigmatic example is Kripke semantic for Intuitionistic Logic. In this paper we start from the concrete problem of providing suitable logic-algebraic models for the calculus of attribute dependencies in Formal Contexts with information gaps and we obtain an intuitive model based on the notion of passage of information showing that Kleene algebras, semi-simple Nelson algebras, three-valued ukasiewicz algebras and Post algebras of order three are, in a sense, naturally and directly connected to partially defined information systems. In this way wecan provide for these logic-algebraic structures a raison dêetre different from the original motivations concerning, for instance, computability theory.  相似文献

Let (X, #) be an orthogonality space such that the lattice C(X, #) of closed subsets of (X, #) is orthomodular and let (, ) denote the free orthogonality monoid over (X, #). Let C0(, ) be the subset of C(, ), consisting of all closures of bounded orthogonal sets. We show that C0(, ) is a suborthomodular lattice of C(, ) and we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for C0(, ) to carry a full set of dispersion free states. The work of the second author on this paper was supported by National Science Foundation Grant GP-9005.  相似文献

In this paper we use free fall approach to develop a high level control/command strategy for a bipedal robot called BIPMAN, based on a multi-chain mechanical model with a general control architecture. The strategy is composed of three levels: the Legs and arms level, the Coordinator level and the Supervisor level. The Coordinator level is devoted to controlling leg movements and to ensure the stability of the whole biped. Actually perturbation effects threaten the equilibrium of the human robot and can only be compensated using a dynamic control strategy. This one is based on dynamic stability studies with a center of mass acceleration control and a force distribution on each leg and arm. Free fall in the gravity field is assumed to be deeply involved in the human locomotor control. According to studies of this specific motion through a direct dynamic model, the notion of equilibrium classes is introduced. They allow one to define time intervals in which the biped is able to maintain its posture. This notion is used for the definition of a reconfigurable high level control of the robot.  相似文献

We analyze the effect of the degree of isolation of a cut point on the number of states P(U, ) of a probabilistic automaton representing the language U. We give an example of a language Un consisting of words of length n such that there exist numbers < for which P(Un, )/P(Un, )0 as n.Translated from Kibernetika, No. 3, pp. 21–25, May–June, 1989.  相似文献

We prove that in anyN-node communication network with maximum degreed, any deterministic oblivious algorithm for routing an arbitrary permutation requires (N/d) parallel communication steps in the worst case. This is an improvement upon the (N/d 3/2) bound obtained by Borodin and Hopcroft. For theN-node hypercube, in particular, we show a matching upper bound by exhibiting a deterministic oblivious algorithm that routes any permutation in (N/logN) steps. The best previously known upper bound was (N). Our algorithm may be practical for smallN (up to about 214 nodes).C. Kaklamanis was supported in part by NSF Grant NSF-CCR-87-04513. T. In a previous study (P. B. Slater, Eur. Phys. J. B. 17, 471 (2000)), several remarkably simple exact results were found, in certain specialized m-dimensional scenarios (m 4), for the a priori probability that a pair of qubits is unentangled/separable. The measure used was the volume element of the Bures metric (identically one-fourth the statistical distinguishability [SD] metric). Here, making use of a newly-developed (Euler angle) parameterization of the 4 × 4 density matrices of Tilma, Byrd and Sudarshan, we extend the analysis to the complete 15-dimensional convex set (C) of arbitrarily paired qubits—the total SD volume of which is known to be 8 / 1680 = 8/24 3 5 7 5.64794. Using advanced quasi-Monte Carlo procedures (scrambled Halton sequences) for numerical integration in this high-dimensional space, we approximately (5.64851) reproduce that value, while obtaining an estimate of 0.416302 for the SD volume of separable states. We conjecture that this is but an approximation to 6/2310 = 6 / (2 3 5 7 11) 0.416186. The ratio of the two volumes, 8/1122 .0736881, would then constitute the exact Bures/SD probability of separability. The SD area of the 14-dimensional boundary of C is 1427/12285 = 2 717/33 5 7 13 34.911, while we obtain a numerical estimate of 1.75414 for the SD area of the boundary of separable states. D. R. Simon stated a problem, so-called Simons problem, whose computational complexity is in the class BQP but not in BPP, where is the function or oracle given in the problem. This result indicates that BPP may be strictly included in its quantum counterpart, BQP. Later, G. Brassard and P. Høyer showed that Simons problem and its extended version can be solved by a deterministic polynomial time quantum algorithm. That is, these problems are in the class EQP. In this paper, we show that Simons problem and its extended version can be deterministically solved in a simpler and more concrete way than that proposed by G. Brassard and P. Høyer.  相似文献

This paper aims to provide a basis for renewed talk about use in computing. Four current discourse arenas are described. Different intentions manifest in each arena are linked to failures in translation, different terminologies crossing disciplinary and national boundaries non-reflexively. Analysis of transnational use discourse dynamics shows much miscommunication. Conflicts like that between the Scandinavian System Development School and the usability approach have less current salience. Renewing our talk about use is essential to a participatory politics of information technology and will lead to clearer perception of the implications of letting new systems becoming primary media of social interaction.  相似文献

Summary The author's inquiry [1] on learning systems is generalized in the following respects: The process of learning, instead of coming to an end when the learning goal has been reached, is supposed to last for ever, so that the above definitive learning as well as phenomena such as forgetting, re-learning, changing the goal etc. become describable. We take over the notion of semi-uniform solvability of a set of learning problems (2.2), but now (trivial cases excluded) the whole capacity of a learning system is never s. u. solvable. Finite such sets are. The notion of a solving-basis of some is introduced and we can state necessary conditions that possess such a basis (2.14), so that examples of sets without a basis can be provided. On the other hand, any s. u. solvable has as basis. The notion of uniform solvability (3.1) reinforces that of s. u. solvability, and there are given sufficient conditions for to be uniformly solvable (3.6). In some finite cases, s. u. solvability, existence of a basis and uniform solvability coincide (3.7–3.9). At last we give the construction for the weakest learning system solving a uniformly solvable problem set (3.12–3.19).Eine deutsche Fassung wurde am 30. Mai 1972 eingereicht.  相似文献

The “explicit-implicit” distinction   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Much of traditional AI exemplifies the explicit representation paradigm, and during the late 1980's a heated debate arose between the classical and connectionist camps as to whether beliefs and rules receive an explicit or implicit representation in human cognition. In a recent paper, Kirsh (1990) questions the coherence of the fundamental distinction underlying this debate. He argues that our basic intuitions concerning explicit and implicit representations are not only confused but inconsistent. Ultimately, Kirsh proposes a new formulation of the distinction, based upon the criterion ofconstant time processing. The present paper examines Kirsh's claims. It is argued that Kirsh fails to demonstrate that our usage of explicit and implicit is seriously confused or inconsistent. Furthermore, it is argued that Kirsh's new formulation of the explicit-implicit distinction is excessively stringent, in that it banishes virtually all sentences of natural language from the realm of explicit representation. By contrast, the present paper proposes definitions for explicit and implicit which preserve most of our strong intuitions concerning straightforward uses of these terms. It is also argued that the distinction delineated here sustains the meaningfulness of the abovementioned debate between classicists and connectionists.  相似文献
