Compound semiconductor research at the University of Washington in Seattle,Washington

The electronic materials program at the University of Washington is a research collaboration involving three departments: Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. The program addresses current important issues in three areas: superlattices and artificially structured materials, epitaxial deposition of electronic materials on dissimilar substrates, and use of surface chemistry and atomic layer growth to achieve epitaxial deposition at reduced temperatures. A key enabling technology for these research areas is the development and use of non-invasive process monitoring and real-time control. Research in these areas is leading to new concepts in materials processing and epitaxial growth technologies for the semiconductor industry.     

Some Dared Call It Torture: Cultural Resonance,Abu Ghraib,and a Selectively Echoing Press

This study draws upon research on “indexing” and “cascading activation” to explore U.S. political and news discourse surrounding the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. Specifically, we systematically analyze White House, military, congressional, and news messages. In so doing, we incorporate scholarship on social identity theory to suggest why news media challenge certain White House frames but uncritically echo others. Our data demonstrate that White House frames were consistently challenged by Democrats in the opposing party, but that these competing congressional messages were largely absent in news coverage. These results challenge previous research on news coverage of Abu Ghraib. We discuss how these patterns align with and expand Entman's cascading activation model of press‐state relations, and consider the implications for future scholarship.

Nonionizing Radiation Levels in the Washington, D.C., Area

In order to determine the typical levels of radio frequency and microwave radiation that result from man-made sources in an urban environment, measurements were made of peak power densities in the Washington, D.C., area during the summer of 1969. Radiation levels were monitored over the frequency range from 20 Hz to 10 GHz at ten sites within a 25 mile radius of the city. Experimental accuracy can be estimated at ±10 dB. The highest levels measured (approximately 10-2 mW/cm2) originated primarily from AM broadcast towers and airport radar installations. These values fall 30 dB below any published U.S. recommendations for occupational exposure.

None Dare Call It Torture: Indexing and the Limits of Press Independence in the Abu Ghraib Scandal

This paper considers the extent to which leading news organizations use independent documentation to build interpretations of events that challenge official framing. The data presented in this study show that despite available evidence and sources to support a counterframing of the Abu Ghraib prison story in terms of a policy of torture, the leading national news organizations did not produce a frame that strongly challenged the Bush administration's claim that Abu Ghraib was an isolated case of appalling abuse perpetrated by low-level soldiers. The press struggled briefly, and in limited fashion with the question of whether events at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere reflected an administration policy of torture, but "abuse" was by far the predominant news frame. The case of Abu Ghraib offers a critical test of agreement and differences among theories of event-driven news, cascading activation, and indexing. Although all the 3 models were implicated in this case, the data, drawn from a content analysis of the Washington Post, CBS Evening News, and a sample of national newspapers, fit most closely with the predictions of the indexing model.

根据静态电磁场的基本方程及其协变性,本文在不考虑相对论效应情况下,简易地导出了静态电磁场的源量(q、J)和场量(E、B)在以低速相对运动的不同惯性系间的相对关系式.所得结果作为从狭义相对论导出的电磁场量一般相对关系式的一种特例,其推导过程简明,物理意义也易于理解.
