Corticostriatal connections of auditory areas within the supratemporal plane and in rostral and caudal portions of the superior temporal gyrus were studied by the autoradiographic anterograde tracing technique. The results show that the primary auditory cortex has limited projections to the caudoventral putamen and to the tail of the caudate nucleus. In contrast, the second auditory area within the circular sulcus has connections to the rostral and the caudal putamen and to the body of the caudate nucleus and the tail. The association areas of the superior temporal gyrus collectively have widespread corticostriatal projections characterized by differential topographic distributions. The rostral part of the gyrus projects to ventral portions of the head of the caudate nucleus and of the body and to the tail. In addition, there are connections to rostroventral and caudoventral portions of the putamen. The mid-portion of the gyrus projects to similar striatal regions, but the connections to the head of the caudate nucleus are less extensive. Compared with the rostral and middle parts of the superior temporal gyrus, the caudal portion has little connectivity to the tail of the caudate nucleus. It projects more dorsally within the head and the body and also more dorsally within the caudal putamen. These differential patterns of corticostriatal connectivity are consistent with functional specialization at the cortical level.  相似文献

The connections of the frontoparietal opercular areas were studied in rhesus monkeys by using antero- and retrograde tracer techniques. The rostral opercular cortex including the gustatory and proisocortical motor (ProM) areas is connected with precentral areas 3, 1, and 2 as well as with the rostral portion of the opercular area which resembles the second somatosensory type of cortex (area SII) and the ventral portion of area 6. Its distant connections are with the ventral portion of prefrontal areas 46, 11, 12, and 13 as well as with the rostral insula and cingulate motor area (CMAr). The mid opercular region (areas 1 and 2) is connected with pre- and postcentral areas 3, 1, and 2 as well as SII. Additionally, it is connected with the ventral portion of area 6, area 44, area ProM, the gustatory area, and the rostral insula. Its distant connections are with area 4, the ventral portion of area 46, area 7b, and area POa in the intraparietal sulcus (IPS). The rostral parietal opercular region is connected with the postcentral portions of areas 3, 1, and 2; areas 5, 7, and SII; the gustatory area; and the vestibular area. Its other connections are with area 4, area 44, the ventral portion of area 46, area ProM, CMAr, and the supplementary motor area (SMA). The caudal opercular region is connected with the dorsal portion of area 3; areas 2, 5, and 7a; and areas PEa as well as IPd of IPS. It is also connected with area SII, insula, and the superior temporal sulcus. Its distant connections are with area 44; the dorsal portion of area 8 and the ventral portion of area 46; as well as CMAr, SMA, and the supplementary sensory area. This connectivity suggests that the ventral somatosensory areas are involved in sensorimotor activities mainly related to head, neck, and face structures as well as to taste. Additionally, these areas may have a role in frontal (working) and temporal (tactile) memory systems.  相似文献

Obtained normative data from a battery of tests (e.g., pupillary response, sound localization, orienting, and face reaction) administered to evaluate simple visual functions in 15 infant rhesus monkeys. Visual responsiveness was limited to simple reflexes in the 1st days of life, but it developed rapidly. By the 2nd wk, Ss reached for objects and responded socially to faces with both gaze aversion and lipsmacking. However, social responsiveness developed differently in males and females: Males responded to faces with lipsmacking 4 days after responding with gaze aversion, while females showed both responses for the 1st time on the same day. Trained 4 female monkeys on a 5-sec delayed-alternation (DA) task and on a simultaneous visual discrimination task. An EEG was recorded through chronically implanted electrodes from dorsolateral frontal cortex (sulcus principalis), inferotemporal cortex, and caudate nucleus. Prestimulus and preresponse EEG amplitudes and frequencies were analyzed for 3 levels of performance for each task. For both frontal and caudate placements: (a) on the DA task, prestimulus voltage was highest at the intermediate performance level, and the inverted- shape was statistically significant; (b) there was a significant task difference for the prestimulus but not for the preresponse, interval. For the inferotemporal placement a significant task difference was found for preresponse, but not for prestimulus, amplitudes. (18 ref.) On the basis of the literature findings, the modern ideas about the structure and function of calcium canals of plasmatic and intracellular membranes of the living cells are generalized and systematized. The major electrophysiologic and chemical properties of the main groups and types of potential-controlled and receptor-controlled calcium canals are reviewed. The article gives the classification and nomenclature of the calcium canals as well as the characteristics of different types of calcium antagonists and the cases of their clinical application.  相似文献

The Symphysis Pubis (SP) joint was investigated by X-ray in 96 adults without any history of disease of the joints. We evaluated the width of this joint by measuring the distance between the two articular surface at three points. We calculated the mean for the three interpubic distances and carried out statistical analysis so as to evaluate if there is a significative difference between the four age classes (< 50; 50-59; 60-69; > 70) and between males and females. We did not found statistically-significative differences between males and females, and between the age classes; nevertheless, it is to be noted that a slight widening of the SP joint can be seen in the elderly, which is thus not significant. We also noted that the medium part of the SP joint undergoes a larger widening in older people: this is probably due to degenerative changes in the fibrocartilagineous disc and the ligaments.  相似文献

According to conventional neurobiological accounts of visual attention, attention serves to enhance extrastriate neuronal responses to a stimulus at one spatial location in the visual field. However, recent results from recordings in extrastriate cortex of monkeys suggest that any enhancing effect of attention is best understood in the context of competitive interactions among neurons representing all of the stimuli present in the visual field. These interactions can be biased in favour of behaviourally relevant stimuli as a result of many different processes, both spatial and non-spatial, and both bottom-up and top-down. The resolution of this competition results in the suppression of the neuronal representations of behaviourally irrelevant stimuli in extrastriate cortex. A main source of top-down influence may derive from neuronal systems underlying working memory.  相似文献

27 male rhesus monkeys were tested for pattern discrimination retention and for color discrimination learning, with and without stimulus-response (S-R) separation, following superior colliculus lesions, partial striate cortex lesions, foveal prestriate lesions, or control lesions involving cortical or subcortical structures. Only the prestriate Ss were reliably impaired in pattern retention and in color discrimination tasks without S-R separation. In color discriminations involving S-R separation, collicular Ss were deficient compared either with the controls or with those with striate lesions. These findings suggest that the primate superior colliculus, like prestriate cortex, is involved in visual sampling behavior required by S-R separation, and thus participates in orientation to visual stimuli. Tested 3 rhesus monkeys with lesions of lateral striate cortex (LSC), 4 monkeys with superior colliculus (SC) lesions, and 3 unoperated monkeys for retention of a preoperatively acquired pattern discrimination. The 3 groups of monkeys were then tested in 2-choice, color discrimination tests, 1 involving varying degrees of stimulus–response (S–R) separation and the other, administered several months later, involving various directions of S–R separation. Ss were also tested in a series of 2-choice pattern discriminations, following each of which they were tested for relearning when the patterns were masked with bars or circles. LSC lesioned Ss were moderately retarded in retention of the pattern discrimination, whereas those with SC lesions were not. SC lesioned Ss, but not those with LSC lesions, were impaired in both S–R separation tests, which demonstrates that their deficit was not transient or solely due to a difficulty in shifting the gaze in 1 direction. The LSC Ss, unlike those with SC lesions, were deficient in relearning discriminations between masked patterns. Findings suggest that SC and LSC may be involved in 2 different aspects of attention, respectively: shifting attention (and orientation) from 1 spatial locus to another and maintaining attention on fixated stimuli. Tested the orientation and attention hypotheses by requiring 4 monkeys with superior colliculus lesions and 2 controls to discriminate between stimuli presented in different parts of the visual field, at durations either too brief or sufficiently long to permit fixation. Findings indicate that before the lesions, Ss discriminated between 2 color-differentiated stimuli presented on a screen only when they fixated the center of the screen. The stimuli were presented 8, 20, or 32° from the screen's center, for 2 sec or 100 msec, a duration too brief to permit their fixation. Performance declined when the response sites, located either centrally or peripherally, were separated from the stimuli, whether they were presented for 2 sec or 100 msec. Findings suggest that the stimulus-response separation effect is due to selective attention to the response sites and not to fixating them during stimulus presentation. Following superior colliculus lesions, Ss were impaired in discriminating between peripheral stimuli, but only when they responded centrally. This deficit was not due to a failure to fixate the stimuli, for it occurred when the stimuli were 100 msec or 2 sec, or to reduced sensory capacities, since it disappeared when Ss responded peripherally. To investigate metabolic disturbances in an animal model of human malaria, four rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were infected with Plasmodium coatneyi, a parasite which induces cytoadherence of infected erythrocytes. When moribund or the parasitaemia had plateaued, the monkeys were sacrificed (3 animals) or treated with chloroquine (1 animal). Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were sampled at intervals between inoculation and sacrifice or treatment. Arterial and CSF glucose and lactate rose during infection, indicating evolving insulin resistance. The arteriovenous difference in glucose concentration also increased, consistent with increased glucose consumption by parasitised tissues. Arterial plasma lactate rose but a positive arteriovenous concentration difference suggested tissue lactate uptake. The animal with the highest plasma lactate at sacrifice remained hyperglycaemic but also had the highest CSF lactate, the greatest cerebral sequestration and neurological depression, and biochemical and histological evidence of severe hepatic pathology. Serum cholesterol and corrected serum calcium fell consistently during infection; serum phosphate was also reduced in animals without renal impairment. These preliminary results indicate that lactic acidosis is a late complication of severe malaria and, by implication from this and other studies, hypoglycaemia occurs even later; other metabolic changes during P. coatneyi infection in rhesus monkeys also parallel those of severe falciparum malaria in humans. The model could be used in further studies of malaria-associated metabolic dysfunction and its management.  相似文献

Following MPTP administration, monkeys manifest cognitive deficits on tasks known to assess the fronto-striatal system; there are, however, no data regarding long-term cognitive effects. In this study, we examined the cognitive abilities of monkeys 10 years after MPTP administration. MPTP-treated monkeys and age-matched controls performed a spatial delayed response task with fixed and random delays. The MPTP-treated monkeys were impaired in both versions of the task. Both groups performed at the same level at very short delays suggesting that the nature of the impairment is related to a spatial memory deficit that is still apparent 10 years after treatment. These results suggest that, like Parkinson's patients, the MPTP-treated primates display spatial deficits.  相似文献

Some studies report seasonal patterns of testicular function in male rhesus monkeys even when they are housed away from females, while others suggest that exposure to sexually active females is essential for male seasonality. We conducted the present experiment (1) to test claims that seasonal testicular activation occurs in the absence of females and (2) to determine whether regular exposure to and copulation with females enhances, or is without effect upon, seasonal increases in testicular function. We studied two groups of male monkeys housed in a colony room containing no females. Males in the Female Exposure group (n = 7) were paired twice weekly with estradiol-implanted females and copulated vigorously. Males in the second group (n = 7) were placed in the same test chamber (at least 16 h after it had been scrubbed with disinfectant) but were never exposed to females. Serum testosterone levels and testis volume were monitored for both groups. Each group displayed a seasonal pattern of testosterone and of testis volume comparable in timing and magnitude to seasonal increases previously reported in group-housed males, but the two groups did not differ from each other. Our findings confirm that seasonal changes in testosterone and testis size occur in the absence of sexual interaction and demonstrate that moderate levels of sexual activity do not enhance this response.  相似文献

The emergence of stereopsis at 3-4 months postnatal in human infants is striking and has led to speculation that its rapid onset and subsequent development must be due to a dramatic reorganization of the brain. Stereopsis has never been measured in infant monkeys, but previous studies have demonstrated that many other visual functions develop four times faster in infant monkeys than in humans. We made longitudinal assessments of stereoacuity in 11 infant rhesus monkeys. A forced-choice preferential-looking technique was used to present random-dot stereograms during testing. By 8 weeks after birth, all of the monkeys were responding to at least coarse levels of disparity (1760" [seconds]), and by 13 weeks of age, all were responding to the relatively fine level of 88" disparity. Age of onset for stereopsis in monkeys was at about one-quarter the age when it occurs in humans, as expected. However, subsequent development proceeded at a similar absolute rate in monkeys and humans. The findings are discussed relative to the neural mechanisms which might be responsible for the differing rates of development.  相似文献

The modular organization of cortical pathways linking visual area 4 (V4) with occipital visual area 2 (V2) and inferotemporal posterior inferotemporal ventral area (PITv) was investigated through an analysis of the patterns of retrogradely labeled cell bodies after injections of tracers into V4 and PITv. Although cytochrome oxidase or other stains have failed to yield reliable independent anatomical markers for cortical modules beyond V1 and V2, V4 and PITv seem to have modular compartments with specific patterns of cortico-cortical connectivity. Tracer injections of V4 labeled cells in V2 (1) thin stripes exclusively, (2) interstripes exclusively, or (3) specific combinations of interstripe and thin stripe subcompartments. These labeling patterns suggest (1) that there is a complicated organization of inputs to V4, (2) that projections from V2 to V4 display a submodular selectivity, and (3) that projections from V2 to V4 display some degree of cross-stream convergence. Consistent with this framework, extensive regions of PITv provide feedback projections to interstripe-recipient portions of V4, whereas more restricted portions of PITv provide feedback to thin stripe-recipient portions of V4. Similarly, the feedforward projection from V4 to PITv often arose from multiple cell clusters across a wide expanse of V4. When distinguishable fluorescent tracers were injected into two PITv sites separated by 3-5 mm, a variety of projection patterns was observed in V4. In most cases, labeled cells were found in multiple, interdigitating, nonoverlapping clusters of 1-3 mm width, whereas in other cases the two labeled fields were highly intermixed. These results suggest that V4 and PITv contain functional modules that can be characterized by the specific patterns of segregated and convergent projections they receive from lower cortical areas. These specific patterns of intercortical input, in conjunction with intrinsic cortical circuitry, may endow extrastriate cortical neurons with new and more complex receptive field properties.  相似文献

Administration of either low or high doses of the alpha-2A adrenergic agonist guanfacine (GFC) to aged monkeys has been shown to improve performance of the delayed-response task, a task linked to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Monkeys treated with higher guanfacine doses also appeared less disinhibited, suggesting enhanced ventromedial-orbital PFC (vmPFC) function. To test this hypothesis, the current study examined the effects of low versus high doses of GFC on reversal of a visual object discrimination task, a task particularly sensitive to vmPFC lesions. The results of this study showed that high (0.1 mg/kg) but not low (0.00001-0.001 mg/kg) doses of GFC significantly improved reversal performance in aged monkeys. These results may be relevant to GFC's calming effects in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.  相似文献

Progressive neuropathologic lesions in vitamin E-deficient rhesus monkeys   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A consistent group of progressive central and peripheral nervous system lesions developed in seven rhesus monkeys maintained on a vitamin E-deficient diet for 30 to 33 months. These lesions were absent from vitamin E-supplemented monkeys. The principal neuropathologic alteration was loss of sensory axons in the posterior columns, sensory roots, and peripheral nerves. Morphologic and morphometric studies indicated that the distal segments of the axons were affected most severely and large-caliber myelinated fibers are selectively involved. Swollen, dystrophic axons (spheroids) occurred infrequently. Degeneration and phagocytosis of small numbers of neuronal perikarya were observed in the dorsal root ganglia and the anterior horns. The number of affected neurons was not proportional to the number of affected axons. Accumulation of lipopigment was evident in neuronal perikarya and CNS endothelial cells. The nervous system lesion were usually accompanied by a chronic necrotizing myopathy. The neuropathologic lesions in vitamin E-deficient monkeys are compared with those in vitamin E-deficient rats and in humans with low serum vitamin E concentrations. A similar type of sensory axonopathy is associated with chronic deficiency of vitamin E in these three species.  相似文献

Aspiration, but not neurotoxic, lesions of the amygdala impair performance on a visual discrimination learning task in which an auditory secondary reinforcer signals which of 2 stimuli will be reinforced with food. Because aspiration lesions of the amygdala interrupt projections of the rhinal cortex traveling close to the amygdala, it was hypothesized that damage to the rhinal cortex would severely impair learning in this task. Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were trained to solve visual discrimination problems based on an auditory secondary reinforcer, were given lesions of the rhinal cortex or the perirhinal cortex alone, and were then retested. The monkeys displayed a reliable, albeit mild, deficit in postoperative performance. It is concluded that the aspiration lesions of the amygdala that produced a severe impairment did so because they interrupted connections of temporal cortical fields beyond the rhinal cortex that are also involved in learning in this task. Hypothesized that observational conditioning is involved in the origins of many human and nonhuman primates' fears and phobias. In Exp I, a new index of snake fear in 7 19–28 yr old wild-reared rhesus monkeys and 9 laboratory-reared offspring (aged 8 mo to 6 yrs) was tested. Results show the measure was useful and demonstrated that young Ss raised by parents who had a fear of snakes did not acquire the fear in the absence of any specific experience with snakes. In Exp II, using 5 of the wild-reared Ss and 6 of the laboratory-reared Ss from Exp I, 5 of 6 offspring acquired an intense and persistent fear of snakes as a result of observing their wild-reared parents behave fearfully in the presence of real, toy, or model snakes for a short period of time.
