In this paper, we analyze the problem of efficient paging for group call searches under realistic mobility patterns. Taking as a basis a location update scheme, based on the definition of an adaptive macro‐location area, adapted to the mobility pattern of the terminals, we characterize the residence probabilities in each location area of a generic macro‐area. With this information, we propose and evaluate different sequential group paging strategies, also taking into account their computational cost. Results show the suitability of some of the proposals (semiadaptive and hybrid schemes) and its applicability to new packet‐based broadband cellular systems. In this paper, a comparative analysis of the performance of the nonsynchronized initial random access channel in Mobile WiMAX and E-UTRA systems under different conditions (fast fading, multiuser interference) is carried out. The analysis is focused on the correlation properties of the code sequences used in each case. We evaluate their ability to provide low values for false alarm and erroneous detection probabilities (detecting a sequence that has not been transmitted) at the same time as guaranteeing low nondetection probabilities of the effectively transmitted sequences. Results show the promising performance of the E-UTRA scheme, even in high mobility scenarios, where the Doppler effect requires additional considerations to guarantee the correct system operation.  相似文献

Broadband wireless access along with evolving mobile Internet and multimedia services are driving the surge of research and development activities for future wireless communication systems. We provide an overview of antenna systems for broadband wireless communications and introduce some of the important issues surrounding them. The approach we use is to first provide a general framework of how antenna systems may be utilized in wireless communication systems and then describe the antenna systems themselves. In particular, we consider antenna systems for the base station, mobile station, and then finally multiple-input multiple-output antenna systems where antenna systems are utilized at both the base and mobile stations  相似文献

This article provides a survey of the emerging IEEE 802.20 standard, also known as mobile broadband wireless access. It provides an introduction to the activities with regard to this standard, including purpose and scope that the specification defines. The relationship with other similar standards such as IEEE 802.16e and 3G are discussed as well. Various technical details of the standard are presented, including quality of service parameters, data rates available to end users, application support, and security. In this paper, a new OFDM-based air interface technology for a mobile broadband wireless system is described. The technology leverages the standard Internet protocol (IP) network elements to build the system and deploys a new air interface technology based on OFDMA. Cross-layer optimization played a major role in the design where the choices made in the physical, MAC, and link layers are also driven by the goal of extending the Internet to the wireless space. A major physical layer benefit of this air interface comes from the orthogonality property that the results in the elimination of in-cell interference are averaged and a worst-case interferer does not limit the system performance. The physical layer features not only result in high capacity but also provide very fine granularity of allocating air link resources, which improves the MAC and link-layer efficiency. The MAC and link layer provide contention-free, fast control channels between the RAR and the WTs. These channels are used to ferry a variety of signaling such as assignments of traffic channel, acknowledgements, channel quality, and traffic request reports. This holistic approach allows for a scheduler that could not only achieve high spectral efficiency but also allow for a fine control over QoS attributes such as latency, reliability, and service differentiation.  相似文献

Third-generation wireless systems, known as IMT-2000 within the ITU, offer opportunities to support a wide range of multimedia services. Packet data services will play a major role in these new multimedia services. A key component of packetized data services is to ensure end-to-end QoS requirements through efficient management of the network's resources. We present an overview of radio resource scheduling schemes including architecture, radio interface protocol, and interactions in a wideband CDMA environment. An improved antenna for a wireless mobile broadband system (e.g. as realised by Bosch as a demonstrator) is proposed. By means of a shaped dielectric lens the radiation pattern of a primary antenna (e.g. a short helical structure) can be shaped to optimise the power distribution across an indoor cell. The calculated performance of lenses designed for the 30 and 60 GHz bands by using geometric optics shows good agreement with measured results  相似文献

This article provides an overview of a fixed low-frequency broadband wireless access system for point-to-multipoint voice and data applications. The operating frequency bands are from 2 to 11 GHz, and the base station can use multiple sectors and will be capable of supporting smart antenna technology. The product system requirements, design of the radio subsystem specification, as well as an analysis of microwave transmission related to current radio technologies are presented. An important problem in land mobile radio communications is how to provide reliable data communications to the largest number of users. To explore this problem, several existing ARQ protocols are examined which have application to the land mobile radio channel, as well as some new protocol combinations. All protocols are analyzed for several key system performance measures which are verified by experimental means for static as well as fading channels. Finally, a conclusion is reached regarding a new protocol combination which is found to offer significant advantages over all other protocols explored.  相似文献

This paper presents an adaptive location management strategy that considers both location updating and paging by evaluating realistic mobility patterns. It proposes the design of an adaptive macro-location area based on multi-registration adapted to the terminals’ trajectory to reduce location updates. The solution includes an estimation of residence probabilities in the areas of the multi-registered list. This facilitates the design of a sequential paging scheme that reduces the average paging cost. Results show the capability of the solution to adapt to mobility patterns and traffic conditions in the network to minimize the overall location cost. Furthermore, the multi-registration approach and the reduced complexity in both network infrastructure and mobile terminals make the solution suitable for new packet-based broadband cellular systems.  相似文献

In this letter, we propose a novel method of implementing an opportunistic priority queuing scheme that supports both latency-sensitive real-time (RT) and best-effort non-realtime (NRT) service classes in mobile broadband wireless (MBWA) systems. It employs an adaptive delay threshold as a dynamic reference of prioritizing the urgent RT service users over others, which allows for fully leveraging the multiuser diversity gain of NRT service users under the varying system conditions. It is shown that the overall system capacity can be further increased by the proposed adaptation rule, as compared with the existing opportunistic priority queuing scheme with the fixed delay threshold.  相似文献

We propose the physical-layer (PHY) air interface solutions for downlink and uplink transmissions in broadband high-speed wireless cellular systems. A system based on low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) time-division multiple-accessing (TDMA) (with scheduling) is proposed for downlink transmission; and a system based on orthogonal space-time block coded (STBC) multi-carrier code-division multiple-accessing (MC-CDMA) is proposed for uplink transmission. The proposed scheme can support ∼100 Mbps peak rate over 25 MHz bandwidth downlink channels and ∼30 Mbps sum rate of multiple users over 25 MHz uplink channels. Moreover, the proposed solutions provide excellent performance and reasonable complexity for mobile station and for base station. Ben Lu received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 1994 and 1997; the Ph.D. degree from Texas A & M University in 2002. From 1994 to 1997, he was a Research Assistant with National Mobile Communications Research Laboratory at Southeast University, China. From 2002 to 2004, he worked for the project of high-speed wireless packet data transmission (4G prototype) at NEC Laboratories America, Princeton, New Jersey. He is now with Silicon Laboratories. His research interests include the signal processing and error-control coding for mobile and wireless communication systems. Xiaodong Wang received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics (with the highest honor) from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in 1992; the M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University in 1995; and the Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1998. From July 1998 to December 2001, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Texas A&M University. In January 2002, he joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University. Dr. Wang’s research interests fall in the general areas of computing, signal processing and communications. He has worked in the areas of digital communications, digital signal processing, parallel and distributed computing, nanoelectronics and bioinformatics, and has published extensively in these areas. Among his publications is a recent book entitled “Wireless Communication Systems: Advanced Techniques for Signal Reception”, published by Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, in 2003. His current research interests include wireless communications, Monte Carlo-based statistical signal processing, and genomic signal processing. Dr. Wang received the 1999 NSF CAREER Award, and the 2001 IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications, the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. Mohammad Madihian (S’78-M’83-SM’88-F’98) received his Ph.D in electronic engineering from Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, Japan, in 1983. He is presently the Chief Patent Officer and Department Head, NEC Laboratories America, Inc., Princeton, New Jersey, where he conducts Microwave as well as PHY/MAC layer signal processing activities for high-speed wireless networks and personal communications applications. He holds 35 Japan/US patents and has authored/co-authored more than 130 technical publications including 25 invited talks. He has received 8 NEC Distinguished R&D Achievement Awards, the 1988 IEEE MTT-S Best Paper Microwave Prize, and 1998 IEEE Fellow Award. He has served as Guest Editor to the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, Japan IEICE Transactions on Electronics, and IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. He is currently serving on the IEEE Speaker’s Bureau, IEEE Compound Semiconductor IC Symposium Executive Committee, IEEE Radio and Wireless Symposium Executive Committee, IEEE International Microwave Symposium Technical Program Committee, IEEE MTT-6 Subcommittee, IEEE MTT Editorial Board, and Technical Program Committee of International Conference on Solid State Devices and Materials. Reconfigurable Software Radio (SR) equipment is considered as the next evolutionary step in the mobile communications. One of the most crucial properties of a SR terminal is that it is capable of using a wide range of air interface standards, providing a seamless interoperability between different standards and an enhanced roaming capability, paving way to a more flexible and efficient use of spectral resources. This multimode operation has to be supported by a number of key functionalities, one of which is the air interface identification. A SR terminal, when switched on, has to be able to locate and identify the air interfaces available in the frequency environment, and while connected to a network, it has to monitor the presence of alternative air interfaces to perform interstandard handover if necessary. In our work, we propose exploiting the distinct cyclostationary properties of signals from different air interfaces as features for air interface identification.  相似文献

The CDMA system promisingly provides more capacity than AMPS. However, providing multichannels for a CDMA system is a requisite to satisfy the demanded capacity. In this paper, five schemes of multichannel assignment are proposed. Based on computer simulation, performance measures such as blocking probabilities, the overall capacity, the capacity of each channel and the number of retrials are obtained. Simulation results indicate that the SIR-based selection scheme is preferable to the other schemes. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

For mobile IP-based telephony (voice over IP) and IP-based real-time multimedia over cellular radio systems, an economically viable solution is needed. It is an absolute requirement that, for example, the 60-octet IPv6/UPD/RTP headers on IP telephony packets be reduced in size to conserve bandwidth in the radio spectrum. We evaluate the performance of two header compression schemes, based on RFCs 2508 and 3095, under the conditions of cellular radio access technology. The results presented in this article refer to voice and Web browsing traffic and are based on the implementation of compression/decompression algorithms for the aforementioned standards. We find that RFC 3095 performs significantly better if used for mobile communications.  相似文献

The forthcoming mobile communication systems are expected to provide a wide variety of services, from high-quality voice to high-definition videos, through high data rate wireless channels anywhere in the world. The high data rate requires broad frequency bands, and sufficient broadband can be achieved in higher frequency bands such as microwave, Ka-band, and millimeter-wave. Broadband wireless channels have to be connected to broadband fixed networks such as the Internet and local area networks. The future-generation systems will include not only cellular phones, but also many new types of communication systems such as broadband wireless access systems, millimeter-wave LANs, intelligent transport systems, and high altitude stratospheric platform station systems. Key to the future generations of mobile communications are multimedia communications, wireless access to broadband fixed networks, and seamless roaming among different systems.
