Pediatric thyroid cancer after the Chernobyl disaster. Pathomorphologic study of 84 cases (1991-1992) from the Republic of Belarus

BACKGROUND: During the initial period after the Chernobyl accident, large amounts of radioactive iodine were released in fallout, resulting in serious exposure to the thyroid gland in the residents of areas around the nuclear power station. Beginning in 1990, a definite increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer was noted in children of the Republic of Belarus. METHODS: Morphologic and clinical features of 84 cases of post-Chernobyl thyroid carcinoma in Belarussian children from 5 to 14 years of age are reported. The latent period for tumor development was 4-6 years, with a mean of 5.8 years. RESULTS: Papillary carcinoma was found in 83 patients and medullary carcinoma in one. Besides typical papillary carcinoma (14%), solid (34%), follicular (33%), mixed (10%), and diffuse sclerosing (9%) variants were observed. The follow-up period ranged from 8 months to 2.5 years. One patient died, local recurrence developed in 2, and cervical lymph node metastases developed in 10. To date, the incidence of local recurrence or metastatic disease after surgery was significantly higher in patients 5-8 years of age and in residents of areas nearest to the Chernobyl station. CONCLUSIONS: Post-Chernobyl pediatric thyroid carcinoma is characterized by a short latency, a higher proportion of tumors arising in young children, and an almost equal sex ratio. Microscopically, these tumors were usually aggressive, often demonstrating intraglandular tumor dissemination (92%), thyroid capsular and adjacent soft tissue invasion (89%), and cervical lymph node metastases (88%). Papillary carcinoma was diagnosed in 99% of cases, with an unusually high frequency of solid growth patterns. Morphologic changes in nonneoplastic thyroid tissue were present in 90% of the glands, and the most specific findings were vascular changes and perifollicular fibrosis.     

Report of the Australian Malaria Register for 1992 and 1993

Australia is free from endemic malaria but several hundred imported cases occur each year. Notification and screening data on malaria cases are collected by State and Territory health authorities and laboratories and forwarded to the Australian Malaria Register (AMR) for national collation and analysis. This report provides information on 758 malaria cases with 5 deaths reported in Australia in 1992 and 712 cases with 1 death in 1993. In both years, just over 70% of cases were male and the modal age group was 20 to 29 years. Cases were reported from all States and Territories, with Queensland reporting the greatest number of cases in both years. The predominant species was Plasmodium vivax, although P. falciparum accounted for just over a quarter of the cases each year. Papua New Guinea (PNG) was the most common source of cases in both years, reflecting the number of people who move between Australia and PNG and the high endemicity of malaria in PNG. The incidence of malaria was also high in travellers from the Solomon Islands in both years and from Ghana in 1992 and Nigeria in 1993. The six deaths over two years highlight the need for medical practitioners to consider malaria as a diagnosis in patients with a history of travel to malarious countries and to provide appropriate advice on malaria prophylaxis to intending travellers.     

Annual Report of the Policy and Planning Board, 1992.

Presents the annual report of the American Psychological Association's (APA's) Policy and Planning Board for 1992. Specific topics addressed are long-range planning, division guidelines and standards, and organizational issues, including amendments to the association rules, terms for APA officers and council members, and representation on the Board of Directors. Annual Report of the Policy and Planning Board, 1991.

As indicated by a December 1990 member opinion survey, the American Psychological Association (APA) Central Office developed an organizational structure that the membership felt was responsive to their needs. The relatively new directorate structure covered areas of activity and support for science, professional practice, public interest, and education. At the close of 1991, APA's financial status also continued to improve, with 93% of the space available for rent in the new APA building under contract and with the Finance Committee's comprehensive financial forecast. Within this stability, the Policy and Planning Board concentrated on issues of organizational structure and efficiency and other topics with broad policy implications, as well as on efforts to develop an overall policy of long-range planning for APA. Siegler and Crowley's (1991) conception of development.

Comments on an article by R. S. Siegler and K. Crowley (see record 1991-27055-001) regarding the microgenetic method of studying cognitive development. The author argues that change alone does not capture the essence of development and that it is inappropriate to talk of the typical course of development because there is no consensus regarding what typically develops. Pollen calendar of the city of Salamanca (Spain). Aeropalynological analysis for 1981-1982 and 1991-1992

We report a study on the contents of airborne pollen in the city of Salamanca (Spain) aimed at establishing a pollen calendar for the city for the yearly periods of maximum concentrations, relating these with quantifiable atmospheric variables over two two-year periods with an interval of 10 years between them: 1981-82 and 1991-92. The pollen was captured with Burkard spore-traps, based on Hirst's volumetric method. Determinations were made daily and were used to make preparations, previously stained with basic fuscin, for study under light microscopy at x 1,000 magnification. 946 preparations were analyzed, corresponding to the same number of days distributed over 150 weeks of the periods studied. The results afforded the identification of 48 different types of pollen grain: Grasses (Poaceae), Olea europea (olive), Quercus rotundifolia (Holm-oak), other Quercus spp. (Q. pyrenaica, Q. suber, Q. faginea, etc.), Cupressaceae (Cupressus sempervivens, C. arizonica, Juniperus communis etc.), Plantago (Plantago lanceolata, Plantago media, etc.), Pinaceae (Pinus communis, Abies alba, etc.), Rumex sp. (osier), Urtica dioica (nettle), Parietaria (Parietaria officinalis, P. judaica), Chenopodio-Amaranthaceae (Chenopodium sp., Amaranthus sp., Salsola kali, etc.), Artemisia vulgaris (Artemisia), other Compositae (Taraxacum officinalis, Hellianthus sp. etc.), Castanea sativa (Chestnut), Ligustrum sp. (privet), Betula sp. (birch), Alnus sp. (common alder), Fraxinus sp (ash), Populus sp. (poplar), Salix sp. (willow), Ulmus sp. (elm), Platanus sp. (plantain, plane), Carex sp. (sweet flag), Erica sp. (Linden), Morus sp. (mulberry), Taxus baccata (yew), Papaveraceae (Papaver rhoeas etc.), Labiata (Lavandula sp.), Cannabaceae (Humulus sp. etc.), Liliaceae (Lilium sp.), Echium sp. (viper's bugloss). The most abundant taxa, detected in the highest quantities (grains/m3 air), by order of counting were as follows: holm-oak, olive, grasses, Plantago and Parietaria. With the data obtained we have established a pollen calendar for Salamanca and report the period in which each type of pollen is found along the years and the periods with the highest airborne concentrations of such pollens. The diversity and the spectrum of the pollen in the city of Salamanca correspond to the typical plant communities found on the dehesas (large ranges of grasslands) of Castile, where Salamanca is located, although the wind directions and the peculiar climatic characteristics of the area govern the peaks of maximum presence of the different taxa. As examples, in the case of olive, which is cultivated at some distance from the city, its maximum presence coincides with south-westerly winds; in the case of grasses, the peaks of maximum counts coincide with a sharp rise in mean temperature, close to or higher than 20 degrees C and between five and six weeks after rainfall equal to or greater than 5 L/m2.

Neurologists--1991 to 1992. Human Resources in Neurology Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) membership survey was developed to define and monitor changing trends in the demography and practice profile of US neurologists. All 11,300 AAN members received a Demographic Information Form (DIF) and 2,600 members also received a Practice Profile Form (PPF) to gather this information. Response rates were 75% from the DIF group and 70% from those who received both. For responding members, age (median, 43 years), sex (83% male), race/ethnic origin (85% white), and medical schools (22% international medical graduates) are similar to those for other physicians in the United States. The ratio of neurologists to population ranges from a low of 1.3 per 100,000 in Wyoming to a high of 11.0 per 100,000 in the District of Columbia. One-fourth of neurologists complete at least one residency in addition to neurology and 39% complete a fellowship. Although nearly two-thirds (63%) of neurologists have a full-time or clinical academic appointment, 70% indicate patient care as their primary medical activity. The number of working hours and professional activities of neurologists vary with practice type. Neurologists perform numerous neurodiagnostic tests for reimbursement, particularly neurophysiologic studies and lumbar puncture. One-third of office-based neurologists have an ownership interest in an imaging facility. The most common payment sources for professional fees are commercial insurers (32%) and Medicare (29%), the latter reflecting the large proportion of disabled and elderly treated by neurologists. Office-based neurologists provide 5% charity care and write off an additional 13% of unpaid charges. The practice of neurology is constantly changing.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Edward E. (Ted) Cureton (1902–1992): Obituary.

Reports the death of Edward E. Cureton, who was a productive contributor to the literature of psychometrics, particularly in the areas of reliability, validity, and factor analysis. A diplomate in industrial psychology, Cureton was a fellow of Divisions 2 (Teaching), 5 (Evaluation and Measurement), 14 (Industrial), and 15 (Educational) of the American Psychological Association (APA) and was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also served as president of the Psychometric Society and of APA's Division 5, and was one of the founders of the Southeastern Psychological Association. June Louin-Tapp (1929–1992): Obituary.

Memorializes J. Louin-Tapp, known particularly for her profound and lasting impact on the field of psychology and law. Dr. Louin-Tapp articulated ethical principles that remain standards for the conduct of research on diverse cultures and on prisoner and other dependent populations.
