The local average strain energy density (SED) approach has been proposed and elaborated by Lazzarin for strength assessments in respect of brittle fracture and high‐cycle fatigue. Pointed and rounded (blunt) V‐notches subjected to tensile loading (mode 1) are primarily considered. The method is systematically extended to multiaxial conditions (mode 3, mixed modes 1 and 2). The application to brittle fracture is documented for PMMA flat bar specimens with pointed or rounded V‐notches inclusive of U‐notches. Results for other brittle materials (ceramics, PVC, duraluminum and graphite) are also recorded. The application to high‐cycle fatigue comprises fillet‐welded joints, weld‐like shaped and V‐notched base material specimens as well as round bar specimens with a V‐notch. The relation of the local SED concept to comparable other concepts is investigated, among them the Kitagawa, Taylor and Atzori–Lazzarin diagrams, the Neuber concept of fictitious notch rounding applied to welded joints and also the J‐integral approach. Alternative details of the local SED concept such as a semicircular control volume, microrounded notches and slit‐parallel loading are also mentioned. Coarse FE meshes at pointed or rounded notch tips are proven to be acceptable for accurate local SED evaluations. The peak stress method proposed by Meneghetti, which is based on a notch stress intensity factor consideration combined with a globally even coarse FE mesh and is used for the assessment of the fatigue strength of welded joints, is also presented.  相似文献

As it is well known the Poisson's effect in a cracked plate subjected to anti‐symmetric plane loading leads to the generation of a coupled out‐of‐plane singular mode. Recent theoretical and numerical analyses have shown that this effect is present also in plates weakened by sharp V‐notches and might play a role in failure initiation phenomena of notched plates subjected to Mode II loading, especially in the presence of a large notch opening angle. Dealing with blunt notches with a large notch radius, and not just with sharp notches, the presence or not of an out‐of‐plane mode does not appear to have been systematically investigated in the past. The main aim of this work is to confirm the existence of the stress field associated with the out‐of‐plane mode (Mode O) and to describe its main features in the presence of a notch radius significantly different from zero. The analyses include U‐notches, as well as circular and elliptic holes. The strain energy density in a 3D control volume is utilized to identify the most critical zone (with respect to failure initiation) through the plate thickness at the notch tip.  相似文献

The stress intensity factor concept for describing the stress field at pointed crack or slit tips is well known from fracture mechanics. It has been substantially extended since Williams' basic contribution (1952) on stress fields at angular corners. One extension refers to pointed V‐notches with stress intensities depending on the notch opening angle. The loading‐mode‐related simple notch stress intensity factors K1, K2 and K3 are introduced. Another extension refers to rounded notches with crack shape or V‐notch shape in two variants: parabolic, elliptic or hyperbolic notches (‘blunt notches’) on the one hand and root hole notches (‘keyholes’ when considering crack shapes) on the other hand. Here, the loading‐mode‐related generalised notch stress intensity factors K1ρ, K2ρ and K3ρ are defined. The concepts of elastic stress intensity factor, notch stress intensity factor and generalised notch stress intensity factor are extended into the range of elastic–plastic (work‐hardening) or perfectly plastic notch tip or notch root behaviour. Here, the plastic notch stress intensity factors K1p, K2p and K3p are of relevance. The elastic notch stress intensity factors are used to describe the fatigue strength of fillet‐welded attachment joints. The fracture toughness of brittle materials may also be evaluated on this basis. The plastic notch stress intensity factors characterise the stress and strain field at pointed V‐notch tips. A new version of the Neuber rule accounting for the influence of the notch opening angle is presented.  相似文献

The paper deals with the small scale yielding estimation of nonlinear stresses and strains at the root of sharp and blunt notches through the mechanical model of antiplane shear loadings. The frame stems from the relation existing between the elastic and plastic averaged strain energy densities evaluated over the control volume drawn by the energy contour lines ahead of the notch tip. The analysis proves that there exist different relationships in terms of point‐wise elastic and plastic stresses and strains at the notch tip depending whether the notch is sharp (small notch tip radius) or blunt. For sharp notches, the analysis confirms previous results obtained by the present authors, according to which . This equation accounts for the influence of the material law through the hardening exponent n. Differently, when the notch can be regarded as blunt, calculations over the control volume give , in agreement with the Neuber rule.  相似文献

Geometrical discontinuities such as notches need to be carefully analysed by engineers because of the stress concentration generated by them. Notches become even more important when the component is subjected, in service, to very severe conditions, such as high‐temperature fatigue and imposed viscoplastic behaviour such as creep. The knowledge of strains and stresses in such stress concentration zones is essential for an efficient and safe design process. The aim of the paper is to present an improvement and extension of the existing notch‐tip creep stress–strain analysis method developed by Nuñez and Glinka, validated for U‐notches only, to a wide variety of blunt V‐notches. The key in obtaining the extension to blunt V‐notches is the substitution of the Creager–Paris equations with the more generalized Lazzarin–Tovo solution, allowing a unified approach to the evaluation of linear elastic stress fields in the neighbourhood of both cracks and notches. Numerous examples have been analysed to date, and the stress fields obtained according to the proposed method were compared with appropriate finite element data, resulting in a very good agreement. In view of the promising results discussed in the paper, authors are considering possible further extension to sharp V‐notches and cracks introducing the concept of the strain energy density.  相似文献

In this work, a comprehensive analytical and numerical study on the two‐dimensional stress fields in orthotropic plates with blunt notches is carried out. Initially, a quick review of the available solutions for lateral notches is presented. Later on, using Lekhnitskii's approach, a new analytical solution is derived which explicitly accounts for the local geometry of the notch, such as the notch root radius and the notch opening angle, as well as the elastic properties of the material. Theoretical predictions based on the new solution are compared with the results from a bulk of 2D finite element analyses carried out on tensioned plates weakened by lateral hyperbolic and blunt V‐shaped notches, showing a very satisfactory agreement.  相似文献

In this paper, the specimens with different geometries and loading configurations were used to study the unified correlation of in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraints with fracture toughness by using numerical simulation method. The results show that the unified constraint parameter Ap which was defined on the basis of the areas surrounded by the equivalent plastic strain isolines ahead of crack tip can characterise both in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraints induced by different specimen geometries and loading configurations. A sole linear relation between the normalised fracture toughness JIC/Jref and was obtained. The JIC/Jref ‐ line is a unified correlation line of in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraints with fracture toughness of a material, and the constraint dependent fracture toughness of a material can be determined from the unified correlation line. The results also demonstrate that the out‐of‐plane constraint effect is related to the in‐plane constraint effect, and there exists interaction between them. The higher in‐plane constraint strengthens the out‐of‐plane constraint effect, whereas the lower in‐plane constraint is not sensitive to the out‐of‐plane constraint effect.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problems of blunt V‐notch with various notch shapes. The purpose is to develop a new method capable of obtaining more accurate solutions for the stress fields around a blunt V‐notch tip under opening and sliding modes. The key method is to use the principle of superposition for linear elastic materials. On the basis of the superposition method and the conventional stress fields for a sharp V‐notch, the stress fields useful for any shapes of blunt V‐notch is proposed. The notch stress intensity factors are estimated by the numerical analysis with finite element analysis, and then the effectiveness and validation of the proposed superposition approach are discussed by comparison with the results from the literature.  相似文献

Engineering plastics provide superior performance to ordinary plastics for wide range of the use. For polymer materials, dynamic stress and strain rate may be major factors to be considered when the strength is evaluated. Recently, high‐speed tensile test is being recognized as a standard testing method to confirm the strength under dynamic loads. In this study, therefore, high‐speed tensile test is analysed by the finite element method; then, the maximum dynamic stress and strain rate are discussed with varying the tensile speed and maximum forced displacement. The maximum strain rate increases with increasing the tensile speed u/t, but the strain rate concentration factor is found to be constant independent of tensile speed, which is defined as the maximum strain rate appearing at the notch root over the average nominal strain rate at the minimum section . It is found that the strain rate at the notch root depends on the dynamic stress rate at the notch root and independent of the notch root radius ρ. It is found that the difference between the static and dynamic maximum stress concentration (σyA,max ? σyA,st) at the notch root is proportional to the tensile speed when u/t = 5000 mm/s. Strain rate concentration factors are also discussed with varying the notch depth and specimen length. Based on the elastic strain rate concentration factor, the master curve is obtained useful for understanding the impact fracture of polycarbonate for the wide range of temperature and impact speed.  相似文献

When a crack or sharp notch is subjected to antisymmetric plane loading the Poisson's effect leads to the generation of a coupled out‐of‐plane singular mode. The latter was known to exist for problems with cracks for a long period of time; meanwhile this mode was largely ignored in theoretical studies of V‐shaped notches subjected to in‐plane loading as well as in practical fracture problems associated with such geometries. Only recently a characteristic equation describing the strength of the singularity of this mode was derived within the first order plate theory. Preliminary numerical investigations confirmed that a highly localized out‐of‐plane singular state linked to the transverse shear stress components does exist in the close vicinity of the notch tip with the singular behaviour as theoretically predicted. However, until now it is unclear how significant this mode is and whether it has to be taken into consideration in the stress analysis of engineering structures. This paper is aimed to discuss important features of this recently identified singular mode, out‐of‐plane singular mode, conduct a comprehensive three‐dimensional numerical study of a typical problem of a welded lap joint to investigate the contribution of this mode into the overall stress state in the close vicinity of the notch tip and discuss the implementation of these new results to the failure and integrity assessment of plate structures with sharp notches.  相似文献

A new numerical method for calculating the singularity orders of V‐notches in Reissner's plate is proposed in this paper. By introducing the asymptotic expansion of the generalised displacement field at the notch tip into the equilibrium equations of a plate, a set of characteristic ordinary differential equations with respect to the singularity order are established. In addition, by adopting the variable substitution technique, the obtained non‐linear characteristic equations are transformed into linear ones, which are solved by the interpolating matrix method. The singularity orders of moments and shear forces can be obtained simultaneously and can be distinguished from the corresponding characteristic angular functions conveniently. Four types of boundary conditions are proposed to investigate the influence of boundary conditions on the singularity order values. The effect of the Poisson's ratio on the singularity orders of the V‐notch in Reissner's plate is discussed. The present method is versatile for the singularity analysis of single material V‐notches and bi‐material V‐notches, and can be easily extended to multi‐material V‐notches.  相似文献

By making use of the generalized plane strain hypothesis, an approximate stress field theory has been developed according to which the three‐dimensional governing equations lead to a system where a bi‐harmonic equation and a harmonic equation should be simultaneously satisfied. The former provides the solution of the corresponding plane notch problem, and the latter provides the solution of the corresponding out‐of‐plane shear notch problem. The system can be applied not only to pointed three‐dimensional V‐notches but also to sharply radiused V‐notches characterized by a notch tip radius small enough. Limits and degree of accuracy of the analytical frame are discussed comparing theoretical results and numerical data from FE models.  相似文献

In this note, we explore the possibility of simple extensions of the heuristic El Haddad formula for finite life, as an approximate expression valid for crack‐like notches, and of the ‘Luká? and Klesnil’ equation for blunt notches. The key starting point is to assume, in analogy to the Basquin power‐law SN curve for the fatigue life of the uncracked (plain) specimen, a power law for the ‘finite life’intrinsic El Haddad crack size. The approach has similarities with what recently proposed by Susmel and Taylor as a Critical Distance Method for Medium‐Cycle Fatigue regime. Reasonable agreement is found with the fatigue data of Susmel and Taylor for notches, and in particular the error seems smaller in finite life than for infinite life, where these equations are already used. In these respects, the present proposal can be considered as a simple empirical unified approach for rapid assessment of the notch effect under finite life.  相似文献

The rates of growth of short fatigue cracks initiated from a notch are much greater than the rates of growth of long fatigue cracks for the same values of K. A decrease in the strength of materials caused by aging affects the behavior of long cracks. The geometric form of the notch strongly affects the behavior of short cracks. The growth rate of a short crack initiated from a sharp notch decreases and attains a minimum value at a length of 0.45 mm, which is far beyond the region of its influence. However, short cracks initiated from blunt notches exhibit slower growth in the region of stress concentration than outside this region. Strain fields induced by deformation of the tip of the notch are not the only factor inhibiting the propagation of short cracks from notches. To explain the behavior of a short crack initiated at a notch, one must take into account some other factors, in particular, crack closure.Published in Fiziko-Khimicheskaya Mekhanika Materialov, Vol. 31, No. 1, pp. 39–44, January – February, 1995.  相似文献

The singularity for the V‐notch under the generalised plane deformation is investigated by the combination of the asymptotic analysis with the interpolating matrix method developed by part of the authors before. The displacement asymptotic expansions at the vicinity of the V‐notch vertex are introduced into the equilibrium equations, which are transformed into a set of characteristic ordinary differential equations with respect to the notch singularity orders. The boundary conditions and interfacial compatibility conditions are also represented by the combination of the singularity orders and characteristic angular functions. The determination of the singularity orders and characteristic angular functions are transformed into solving the ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients, which are solved by the interpolating matrix method. The present method is suitable for the singularity analysis for isotropic and orthotropic V‐notches. It is versatile for analysing the stress singularity of single material V‐notches, bi‐material V‐notches, interface edges and cracks. The correctness of the results by the proposed method is ensured by the comparison with the published ones.  相似文献

Constraint can be divided into two conditions of in‐plane and out‐of‐plane, and each of them has its own parameter to characterize. However, in most cases, there exists a compound change of both in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraint in structures, a unified measure that can reflect both of them is needed. In this paper, the finite element method (FEM) was used to calculate the equivalent plastic strain (ɛp) distribution ahead of crack tips for specimens with different in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraints, and the FEM simulations based on Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) damage model and a small number of tests were used to obtain fracture toughness for the specimens with different constraints. Unified measure and characterisation parameter of in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraints based on crack‐tip equivalent plastic strain has been investigated. The results show that the area APEEQ surrounded by the ɛp isoline ahead of crack tips can characterize both in‐plane and out‐of‐plane constraints. Based on the area APEEQ, a unified constraint characterisation parameter Ap was defined. It was found that there exists a sole linear relation between the normalised fracture toughness JIC/Jref and regardless of the in‐plane constraint, out‐of‐plane constraint and the selection of the ɛp isolines. The unified JIC/Jref−reference line can be used to determine constraint‐dependent fracture toughness of materials. The FEM simulations with the GTN damage model (local approach) can be used in obtaining the unified JIC/Jref−reference line for materials with ductile fracture.  相似文献

Based on detailed three-dimensional (3D) finite element analyses, elastic fields in front of blunt V-notches in finite thickness plates subjected to uniaxial far-end tensile stress have been investigated. By comparison with the corresponding planar V-notch fields and 3D through-thickness sharp crack fields, various aspects of the 3D fields of the blunt V-notches in finite thickness plates are revealed: (1) The plate thickness and notch angle have obvious effects on the stress concentration factor (SCF) K t, which is higher in finite thickness plates than in the plane stress and plane strain cases. When the notch angle is smaller than 90°, the SCF is insensitive to the notch angle, but has close relation with the dimensionless plate thickness. With the notch angle increasing further, the SCF decreases and the effect of dimensionless plate thickness on it becomes weaker. (2) For any notch angle considered, the variation of the opening stress yy normalized by its value yy0 at the notch-root with the distance x from the root normalized by the root-radius , is insensitive to the plate thickness and coincides well with the two-dimensional (2D) planar solution. (3) The 3D distribution of the out-of-plane constraint factor T z=zz/(yy+xx) is controlled by the plate thickness (B), the notch-radius () as well as the notch angle (), but for deeper V-notches with 90°, the distribution of T z coincides well with that of a U-notch as well as a sharp 3D through-thickness crack and an explicit empirical expression of T z is presented. (4) The distribution of the in-plane stress ratio T x=yy/xx in front of the 3D V-notch is nearly independent of the plate thickness and coincides well with the corresponding 2D solutions when the opening angle is smaller than 120°. (5) The gradient of the out-of-plane strain zz is significant near the free surface in finite thickness plates. On the free surface, the zz can be 3.5 times the value on the mid-plane, and the through-thickness gradient of the zz increases with decreasing notch angle. It is of interest to note that most of the field quantities ahead of V-notches are insensitive to the notch angles when the notch angle is smaller than 90°.  相似文献

In this paper, the average stress method for the fatigue limit evaluation of stress raising geometrical features is revised and extended. In particular, an analytical close‐form approach was used and the linear elastic stress equations were modified by taking into account the effect of nominal stress on the local stress distribution. Hence, the average tangential stress was correctly evaluated over a distance of 2a0, where a0 was El Haddad's short crack constant, for long and small notches as well as for crack‐like notches. When this model is applied to a wide range of geometrical features subjected to mode I fatigue loading, the classical shape of the curves of the Kitagawa–Takahashi diagram was obtained for changes in crack‐like notch size. Similarly, notch sensitivity was estimated by reducing the notch tip radius. The accuracy of the proposed method in predicting fatigue limits was then checked by using experimental data taken from the literature and generated on testing specimens weakened by rounded and sharp notches as well as by small artificial defects.  相似文献

Unlike a Hertzian ring crack induced by a spherical indenter in absence of a singular stress field, a ring crack generated by a rigid flat cylindrical indenter can be explicitly linked to a K‐dominant singular stress field at the perimeter of the flat indenter. This means microcrack initiation induced by a flat indenter and relevant properties such as the critical indentation load and fracture toughness can be formulated explicitly using the fracture mechanics approach. It is shown in this paper that the indentation stress intensity factor, , for such a stress field is similar to that of a mode I crack. Based on the energy‐releasing rate and the Griffith's theorem, a flat indentation cracking model has been proposed; the critical load and critical cracking angle for crack initiation are derived. A new concept of fracture toughness for negative mode I singular stress field,, has been defined and a relationship between and the traditional KIC has been derived. The experimental investigation validates the existence of such , from which the KIC value of the glass had been determined to be 0.772 ± 0.003 MPa m1/2, agreeing well with the literature data. This analysis for indentation fracture or crack initiation due to surface contact of a flat indenter is particularly useful in determining KIC of brittle materials with dimensions in micro/nanoscales, e.g. thin films and other microstructures as flat micro/nano‐indenters are available and can be used on various nano‐indentation machines.  相似文献

One of the most powerful criteria to predict the critical fracture load in plates with notches is the strain‐energy density averaged over a well‐defined control volume ahead of the notch tip. Although the averaged strain‐energy density (ASED) criterion has been proposed for homogeneous materials, it has been shown in this paper that this criterion can also be applied for non‐homogeneous materials, especially for functionally graded materials (FGMs). A numerical method has been used to evaluate the control volume boundary, the averaged strain‐energy density over the control volume, and also the critical fracture load in FGMs under mode I loading. A new set of experimental results on fracture of blunt V‐notched samples made of austenitic–martensitic functionally graded steel under mode I loading have been provided.  相似文献
