During May 1996, field surveys on Lyme disease spirochetes were conducted in Beijing, Shenyang, Fushun, and Inner Mongolia in northeastern China. The ticks collected consisted of 3 genera and 12 species. Of these, Ixodes persulcatus was dominant in sun-exposed vegetation in forests in Inner Mongolia; 57 Borrelia strains (55/123 unfed adults and 2/5 immature stages fed on a rodent) were obtained from this tick by BSK culture. Additionally, 2/2 Apodemus peninsulae were positive. Ixodes nipponensis, Ixodes pavlovskyi, Haemaphysalis douglasi, and Haemaphysalis megaspinosa, newly recorded in China, and other Haemaphysalis spp. were all negative for Borrelia. Based on a polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the 45 strains successfully subcultured, these were classified as 29 Borrelia garinii and 16 Borrelia afelii. These strains seemed to be more closely related to Japanese strains in genetic features than to those from Europe. The result of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis suggested more diversity in both genospecies, but Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto was not found.  相似文献

Studies carried out in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Union Territory of Delhi after the bubonic plague outbreak during 1994 revealed the presence of seven species of rodents, viz. Rattus rattus, R. norvegicus, Mus. musculus, Tatera indica, Suncus murinus, Bandicoota bengalensis and B. indica. The flea species encountered were Xenopsylla cheopis and X. astia. The X. cheopis and X. astia index recorded in different areas of Beed district of Maharashtra; Surat, Vadodra and Baruch districts in Gujarat and Varanasi district in Uttar Pradesh and their implications have been discussed. Insecticide suspectibility tests carried out against DDT, dieldrin, malathion and deltamethrin with X. cheopis collected from Maharashtra, Delhi and Varanasi revealed that this vector species is resistant to DDT and dieldrin but susceptible to malathion and deltamethrin. The prevalence and distribution of rodents species, high cheopis index and prevalence of Tatera indica just at the door steps of houses in village Mamla of Beed district provides highly congenital conditions for the intermingling of wild and domestic rodents and transfer of flea population from wild to domestic rodents and vice-versa. These conditions were found to be highly supportive for bubonic plague transmission in the district. The presence of Yersinia pestis antibodies in Rattus rattus collected from Beed, Surat and Varanasi areas are also indicative of bubonic plague in Beed and Varanasi and pneumonic plague in Surat during 1994.  相似文献

Studies carried out on entomological and rodent surveillance in agroclimatic and feral biotopes of five districts of Maharashtra and two districts of Gujarat revealed that the terrain features of the seven districts surveyed were conducive to wild rodent species, Tatera indica, a natural reservoir of plague and vector flea species, Xenopsylla cheopis. A total of 214 Tatera indica and three Bandicoota bengalensis were collected from burrows by the digging method and 89 rat fleas were retrieved. The flea index calculated ranged from 0.26 to 1.0 in different districts. The examination of blood serum samples, contact tissue impression smears and tissue organs (heart, lung, liver and spleen) of these wild rodents did not reveal any evidence of plague activity. The natural harbourages of Tatera indica were found to be elevated land or raised margins of agricultural fields or barren land with thorny bushes/xerophytic plants and parthenium grass. Agricultural fields having wet soil were found to be the preferred harbourages of Bandicoota bengalensis. Movement of wild rodents toward human settlement was observed to be the common phenomenon during the harvesting season which may lead to the creation of favorable conditions for plague outbreaks.  相似文献

This article continues the series of electronic microscopical investigations of tick attachment and host's inflammatory reaction in the attachment site. In all this works we used larvae of different Ixodid ticks but the same species of the host (white mouse), Ixodid species having different type of attachment. Dermacentor marginatus (Amosova, 1989a) is characterized by the superficial penetration of mouth parts, the abundance of cement around them and on the surface of the host's skin, the mouth parts of Hyalomma asiaticum are fully inserted and the superficial cement is minimal (Amosova, 1989b) and Ixodes ricinus has mouth parts inserted more deeply in the skin tissue of the host and the cement substance localised only on the surface of the skin at the 1st and 2nd days of feeding period. For this investigation we choose Haemaphysalis longicornis because it is known (see Kemp et al., 1982) that genus Haemaphysalis has the most superficial localisation of the mouth parts in the attachment site. We have studied a fine structure of cement cone and the cement substance surrounding the mouth parts in the skin and have demonstrated that it is very similar to the Dermacentor marginatus cement structure. The pattern of cellular response is similar to D. marginatus lesion too.  相似文献

Factors regulating prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner in Ixodes ricinus (L.) were examined during 1991-1992 at Bogesund, near Stockholm in south-central Sweden. Nine species of small and medium-sized mammals (Sorex araneus L., S. minutus L., Neomys fodiens Pennant, Clethrionomys glareolus [Schreber], Microtus agrestis [L.], Apodemus sylvaticus [L.], A. flavicollis [Melchior], Lepus europaeus Pallas, L. timidus L.) were found to infect feeding tick larvae with B. burgdorferi s.l., whereas two species of large mammals (Capreolus capreolus L., Alces alces L.) failed to infect feeding tick larvae with this spirochete. The most important mammalian reservoirs at the study locality were S. araneus and rodents, accounting for 91% of all I. ricinus larvae infected. In view of the great number of potentially effective reservoirs for B. burgdorferi s.l. in Sweden, control of Lyme disease by reduction of abundance of reservoir hosts will be difficult to achieve. We also found that infectivity of a rodent species is related to the number of infesting, potentially infective nymphal I. ricinus. Insectivores and rodents were the most important hosts of larval I. ricinus, whereas most nymphal ticks fed on hares and cervids. Adult I. ricinus were frequently found on all species of hares and cervids examined but never on insectivores and rodents. No single species seemed to be of paramount importance as a source of blood for female ticks. Therefore, control of Lyme disease by reduction of abundance of mammal hosts available for female tick engorgement will probably require massive reductions of numbers of both C. capreolus and L. timidus.  相似文献

The contribution of migratory and resident birds to the introduction of Lyme disease will vary with the degree to which various species expose themselves to, and are infested by, juvenile vector ticks, and their ability to support and transmit the infectious agent. To examine the relative contribution of various passerine species during the emergence of this disease, we compared the abundance and infection rates of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, removed from mist-netted birds with those from live-trapped mice at a coastal study site in southern Maine, collected during an 8-yr period in which the range of this tick and the incidence of Lyme disease increased in the state. Weekly bird-banding sessions using six 12-m Japanese mist nets were carried out from May through August 1989-1996. In 1989, 1991 and 1993, mice were live-trapped in a Sherman trap grid (7 by 7 m) during five 3-night sessions, June through August; in 1994-1996, 2 such grids were similarly trapped. Annual adult tick abundance was estimated by flagging vegetation. We removed 2,633 juvenile deer ticks from 1,713 of 1,972 birds examined. Twenty-five of 64 bird species were infested. The percentages of birds infested and the rate of infection among removed larvae and nymphs increased over the years, but species varied markedly in their ability to infect ticks. No infected larvae were removed from catbirds or towhees. The larval to nymphal ratio was higher in mice than in birds. Infection rates among bird-derived larvae were less than among mice-derived larvae, but increased with time. Because of the different ways in which individual species of passerine birds contribute to the availability of vector ticks and respond to the agent of Lyme disease in emerging areas, further research into host competency and borreliacidal mechanisms is needed.  相似文献

A comparison of the ability of mammals to localize sound revealed that among the animals examined to date, none of the rodents have been able to localize as accurately as the carnivores. Because all of these rodents are prey animals, the question arises as to whether their poor localization acuity is a phyletic trait of Rodentia or whether it is a trait common to prey species that may be under less selective pressure than predators to localize sound accurately. To answer this question, sound localization acuity was determined in a species that is both predatory and a rodent, the northern grasshopper mouse. Localization thresholds for a single 100-ms noise burst were determined for three grasshopper mice using a conditioned avoidance procedure. Their 50% discrimination threshold of 19° is larger than that of any of the previously tested carnivores and well within the range of other rodents. However, calculations of the binaural sound localization cues available to rodents (based on their head size) suggest that the grasshopper mouse may make more efficient use of the available locus cues than other rodents. Thus, although the grasshopper mouse cannot localize as accurately as carnivores, it appears to be more accurate than predicted for a nonpredatory rodent of its size. BACKGROUND: The tropical rat mite, Ornithonyssus bacoti (0. bacoti), is an ectoparasite on many rodents, but when the rodent is not available, humans may become the victim of the mite's bite. The bite induces a nonspecific dermatitis; therefore, it is not easy to diagnose rat mite dermatitis unless the parasites are found. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten cases of rat mite dermatitis were found in medical students who had studied in the same room of the library. Their nonspecific dermatitis consisted of small papules, and parasites were found in the skin or in the environment. The mites were collected and identified as O. bacoti, female. Histopathologic studies showed moderate perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltrations intermingled with some eosinophils. The presence of rodents in or around the room was confirmed by the students, but there had been no preceding rodent eradication. Although the rats were not captured in the library, insecticides were sprayed, and no further problem with either mites or dermatitis developed during the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Rat mite dermatitis can occur in clusters that involve a common source of exposure to the rat mite epidemiologically. Prompt identification of rat mites and the eradication of mites and rodents from the environment can prevent further spreading of the disease.  相似文献

Photic sensitivity of cells in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the principal pacemaker of the mammalian circadian system, has been documented in several species. In nocturnal rodents, the majority of photically responsive SCN cells are activated by retinal illumination. One report identified mostly photic suppressions among SCN cells in a diurnal rodent, studied under somewhat different conditions. We examined photic sensitivity of SCN cells in a predominantly diurnal rodent, the degu, studied in vivo under identical conditions to rats, and found that a large majority of photic SCN cells were suppressed by light. In both rats and degus, SCN cells were more responsive to light during the subjective night than during the subjective day. Light-responsive cells did not show a daily rhythm in baseline firing rates in either species, but rat SCN cells that did not respond to light were more active spontaneously during the subjective day. Light-unresponsive SCN cells in degus did not show a similar pattern. There are substantial differences in the neurophysiological activity and photic responsiveness of SCN cells in diurnal degus and nocturnal rats.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among 19 extant species of rodents, with special emphasis on rats, mice, and allied Muroidea, were studied using sequences of the nuclear protein-coding gene LCAT (lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase), an enzyme of cholesterol metabolism. Analysis of 705 base pairs from the exonic regions of LCAT confirmed known groupings in and around Muroidea. Strong support was found for the families Sciuridae (squirrel and marmot) and Gliridae (dormice) and for suprafamilial taxa Muroidea and Caviomorpha (guinea pig and allies). Within Muroidea, the first branching leads to the fossorial mole rats Spalacinae and bamboo rats Rhizomyinae. The other Muroidea appear as a polytomy from which are issued Gerbillinae (gerbils), Murinae (rats and mice), Sigmodontinae (New World cricetids), Cricetinae (hamsters), and Arvicolinae (voles). Evidence from LCAT sequences agrees with that from a number of previous molecular and morphological studies, both concerning branching orders inside Muroidea and the bush-like radiation of rodent suprafamilial taxa (caviomorphs, sciurids, glirids, muroids), thus suggesting that this nuclear gene is an appropriate candidate for addressing questions of rodents relationships.  相似文献

Wild and domestic animals from 3 geographic-climatologic areas in northern California were tested for antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii. A total of 2,796 serum samples representing 37 species of wild mammals, 35 species of wild birds, and 5 species of domestic animals were tested by the indirect hemagglutination test. Of 1,174 wild mammal serums tested, 10.8% were positive, which compared with 14.7% of the 1,221 domestic mammal serums. Of 229 wild carnivores tested, 45% were seropositive, including 69% of 86 bobcats, 28% of 58 coyotes, 48% of 25 raccoons, 27% of 26 gray foxes, 22% of 32 striped skunks, a civet cat, and a mink. Serologic evidence of infection was found in 38% of 47 rural domestic cats, but none of the 7 dogs tested was seropositive. Of 160 murid rodents (rats and house mice) in rural habitats, 4% were seropositive, which compared with 2% of 399 cricetine rodents (mostly deer mice) collected from wilderness habitats. Seven percent of 56 wild Artiodactyla (deer and feral pigs) were seropositive, which compared with 15% of 1,048 domestic sheep tested. Of 401 birds tested, 3.5% had antibodies against T gondii. The highest prevalence of antibodies among birds was in crows (14%). Toxoplasma was isolated from 1 raven, by mouse inoculation. In general, the highest prevalence of seropositive carnivores, rodents, and sheep was in the coastal region below 100 ft elevation, where the weather is cool and damp for much of the year. In the central valley the highest prevalence among sheep was in areas under irrigation. The prevalence of antibodies was lowest in the mountain areas, where climatologic extremes prevail at various seasons of the year.  相似文献

From 1989 to 1992, a longitudinal study of the relationships between different tick species and domestic ungulates in the transmission and amplification of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus was undertaken in the Bandia area in Senegal where the presence of the virus had been reported previously. An epizootic occurred in 1991-1992 and 22 strains of CCHF virus were isolated from Hyalomma marginatum rufipes Koch, Amblyomma variegatum (F.), Rhipicephalus guilhoni Morel & Vassiliades, and R. evertsi evertsi Neumann ticks collected from cattle and goats. No human cases were reported. Transmission of CCHF virus in the area involves a complicated pattern including many tick species and hosts. Amplicons of the S fragment (536 bp) of the CCHF genome of 12 isolates from the study were obtained by polymerase chain reaction and analyzed by restriction-length fragment polymorphism. Three different genotypes of CCHF virus were identified and present during the epizootic. One genotype was recovered from A. variegatum, R. guilhoni, and R. e. evertsi and 2 genotypes were isolated from H. m. rufipes.  相似文献

The role of Triatoma sordida in the domestic transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi was assessed in 7 rural localities in Velasco Province, Department of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Tri. sordida, the only triatomine species identified in these localities, was found inside 58.0% of houses but not in large numbers (3.1 bugs per infested house on average). A total of 220 faecal samples from domiciliary bugs was examined microscopically and by the polymerase chain reaction for the presence of trypanosomes: 21.4% were infected. Analysis of blood meals of domiciliary Tri. sordida showed that humans were the commonest host (70.4%), followed by chickens and dogs. Four of 418 persons tested were seropositive for Tryp. cruzi. Only 2 of a second group of 62 persons living in dwellings infested by Tri. sordida were seropositive. Tryp. cruzi infection was demonstrated in dogs and domestic rats. Three other species of small mammals were found to be infected with trypanosomes. In our study area, domestic Tri. sordida are mainly incriminated in the transmission of Tryp. cruzi to synanthropic animals, whereas transmission to humans is very rare. The presence in houses of small populations of Tri. sordida infected with Tryp. cruzi is therefore currently insufficient for this insect to constitute a major epidemiological risk factor.  相似文献

The role of the host plasminogen activation system in transmission of and invasion by Borrelia burgdorferi, the tick-borne spirochetal agent of Lyme disease, was investigated using plasminogen (Plg)-knockout mice. PLG was not detected in spirochetes from unfed ticks, but binding occurred as ticks fed on the host's blood. Plasminogen activators were derived from the host blood meal. PLG was required for efficient dissemination of B. burgdorferi within the tick and for enhancement of spirochetemia in mice but was not critical for transmission and infection. These results provide evidence for a bacterium using a vertebrate protease to disseminate in an invertebrate vector and underscores the interplay among vector, pathogen, and host in promoting the life cycle and disease.  相似文献

In May 1992 an infestation with the tropical bont tick appeared in a small dairy heifer replacement herd in Camuy, Puerto Rico, a completely new site located near Puerto Rico's northwest coast. This finding occurred after some three years of no infestation in either Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands and is not suspected of being associated with any previous infestations. The methods used to eradicate this tick include spray treatment at a two-week interval of all domestic livestock, with amitraz at 0.025% and permethrin at 0.055%. Dogs and chickens are also inspected. Owners are encouraged to reduce numbers of these species. All livestock on adjoining farms are inspected and treated on a frequent basis. There has been no evidence of any spread and the infestation is expected to be eliminated within 18 months.  相似文献

Many isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi have been obtained from ticks and vertebrate tissues collected in North America and continental Europe but only one established culture of United Kingdom Borrelia burgdorferi has been recorded. In this paper we report the isolation of B. burgdorferi from one of 108 tick pools representing 733 ticks and eight-four tissue samples from twenty-six rodents collected in the U.K, and the subsequent failure to establish the isolate (from ticks collected in Fordingbridge) in culture. In contrast, using identical techniques and culture medium, B. burgdorferi was isolated from one of seven tick pools collected in Switzerland, and from a single pool of ticks collected in Slovakia, and both isolates were successfully passaged. Analysis of questing I. ricinus collected from Fordingbridge by direct immunofluorescence showed 6/32 (19%) of adults and 8/108 (7%) of nymphs were positive for B. burgdorferi, although only one nymph contained > or = 1000 spirochaetes. To examine further the problem of isolating U.K. B. burgdorferi, twelve Ixodes ricinus tick samples from Fordingbridge, a recognized focus of Lyme disease, were subjected to isolation and culturing techniques, and the procedures monitored by use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Whereas 11/12 samples were PCR positive after 2 weeks in culture, only one was PCR positive after 4 weeks. Motile spirochaetes were not visible by dark-field microscopy in any of the cultures. The results indicate that the standard BSK II medium routinely used to isolate and culture B. burgdorferi does not readily support the replication of the Borrelia species endemic to the U.K.  相似文献

The constitutive and inducible hepatic cytochromes P450 of various feral Cricetid rodents (family Cricetidae, comprising various New World rats and mice, hamsters, gerbils and voles), have been examined in a relatively limited number of field and laboratory investigations. These studies, reviewed herein, have employed substrates and immunochemical reagents that are diagnostic for individual P450 subfamilies of Rattus norvegicus (the common laboratory species derived from the Norway rat, a member of the family Muridae). The results have demonstrated that the feral rodents display hepatic responses to prototypic CYP1A inducers (3-methylcholanthrene, beta-naphthoflavone) similar to those displayed by R. norvegicus and Mus musculus (the common laboratory species derived from the house mouse, another member of the family Muridae). At least one study has demonstrated the induction, by ethanol, of a protein immunochemically similar to CYP2E1 in a Cricetid rodent. In Cricetid rodents, phenobarbital-type inducers cause the induction of a hepatic protein immunologically similar to that primarily induced (CYP2B) in R. norvegicus and M. musculus. The proteins induced in the Cricetid rodents, however, exhibit striking differences in substrate specificity, compared to the proteins induced in R. norvegicus. These results indicate that the previously described differences between the P450 induction responses exhibited by the commonly utilized laboratory species R. norvegicus and M. musculus (family Muridae) and the Syrian hamster and gerbil (family Cricetidae) are observed as a generality for members of the Cricetid family of rodents.  相似文献

A total of 4803 domestic and wild animals which were presented for examination at a veterinary clinic in north Baden, Germany over a period of 1 year were examined for tick infestation. A total of 434 nymphal and adult ticks were collected from 175 hosts. Ticks found belonged to the species Ixodes ricinus (385), Ixodes hexagonus (48), and Ixodes ventalloi (one). The polymerase chain reaction was used to examine 132 I. ricinus and 21 I. hexagonus for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi. Twenty-two per cent of adult I. ricinus were infected as were one female and one larval I. hexagonus.  相似文献

A survey of ectoparasites from 219 meadowlarks conducted during 2 consecutive fall-winter periods in a coastal prairie found immature Amblyomma maculatum Koch to be the most abundant parasite. Peak larval infestations occurred in December with 80-100% of collected birds infested and with a monthly mean of up to 34 larvae per bird. Peak nymphal infestations occurred in February or March with 95-100% of birds infested and with a monthly mean of up to 11 nymphs per bird. Seasonal dynamics of these stages offered possible insight into the persistence of A. maculatum in an area long infested with the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. Four other species of ticks also were collected but in substantially lower numbers; Amblyomma cajennense (F.), Amblyomma inornatum (Banks), Haemaphysalis chordeilus (Packard), and Haemaphysalis leporispalustris (Packard). This appears to be the 1st host record of A. cajennense from meadowlarks. A collection of 17 northern bobwhite quail indicated that most of these birds were infested with A. maculatum but at a lower level than meadowlarks. The collections of 2 species of Mallophaga from meadowlarks and 4 species from the northern bobwhite quail are discussed.  相似文献
