Thermal properties of blends of poly(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) prepared by solution casting were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. In the study of PHBV‐SAN blends by differential scanning calorimetry, glass transition temperature and melting point of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends were almost unchanged compared with those of the pure PHBV. This result indicates that the blends of PHBV and SAN are immiscible. However, crystallization temperature of the PHBV in the blends decreased approximately 9–15°. From the results of the Avrami analysis of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends, crystallization rate constant of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends decreased compared with that of the pure PHBV. From the above results, it is suggested that the nucleation of PHBV in the blends is suppressed by the addition of SAN. From the measured crystallization half time and degree of supercooling, interfacial free energy for the formation of heterogeneous nuclei of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends was calculated and found to be 2360 (mN/m)3 for the pure PHBV and 2920–3120 (mN/m)3 for the blends. The values of interfacial free energy indicate that heterogeneity of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends is deactivated by the SAN. This result is consistent with the results of crystallization temperature and crystallization rate constant of PHBV in the PHBV‐SAN blends. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Miscibility and crystallization of biodegradable poly (3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx)/poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh) blends were investigated in this work. PHBHHx is miscible with PVPh over the whole composition range as evidenced by the single composition dependent glass transition temperature and the depression of equilibrium melting point of PHBHHx in the blends. The overall crystallization rates decrease with increasing crystallization temperature for both neat PHBHHx and its blends with PVPh; moreover, the overall crystallization rates are slower in the PHBHHx/PVPh blends than in neat PHBHHx at the same crystallization temperature. Blending with PVPh may change the crystallization mechanism of PHBHHx in the blends compared with that of neat PHBHHx. Both neat PHBHHx and the PHBHHx/PVPh blends exhibit a crystallization regime II to III transition. The crystal structure of PHBHHx is not modified in the PHBHHx/PVPh blends; however, the values of crystal layer thickness, amorphous layer thickness, and long period all become larger with increasing PVPh content in the blends. Crystallization and melting behaviors of poly(p‐phenylene sulfide) (PPS) in blends with poly(ether sulfone) (PES) prepared by melt‐mixing were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The blends showed two glass transition temperatures corresponding to PPS‐ and PES‐rich phases, which increased with increasing PES content, indicating that PPS and PES have some compatibility. The cold crystallization temperature of the blended PPS was a little higher than that of pure PPS. Also, the heats of crystallization and melting of the blended PPS decreased with increasing PES content, indicating that the degree of crystallinity decreased with an increase of PES content. The isothermal crystallization studies revealed that the crystallization of PPS is accelerated by blending PPS with 10 wt % PES and further addition results in the retardation. The Avrami exponent n was about 4 independent on blend composition. The activation energy of crystallization increased by blending with PES. The miscibility and crystallization kinetics of the blends of random poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) [P(HB‐co‐HV)] copolymer and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was found that P(HB‐co‐HV)/PMMA blends were miscible in the melt. Thus the single glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the blends within the whole composition range suggests that P(HB‐co‐HV) and PMMA were totally miscible for the miscible blends. The equilibrium melting point (T°m) of P(HB‐co‐HV) in the P(HB‐co‐HV)/PMMA blends decreased with increasing PMMA. The T°m depression supports the miscibility of the blends. With respect to the results of crystallization kinetics, it was found that both the spherulitic growth rate and the overall crystallization rate decreased with the addition of PMMA. The kinetics retardation was attributed to the decrease in P(HB‐co‐HV) molecular mobility and dilution of P(HB‐co‐HV) concentration resulting from the addition of PMMA, which has a higher Tg. According to secondary nucleation theory, the kinetics of spherulitic crystallization of P(HB‐co‐HV) in the blends was analyzed in the studied temperature range. Blends of two biodegradable semicrystalline polymers, poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared with different compositions. The thermal stability, phase morphology and thermal behavior of the blends were studied by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the TGA data, it can be seen that the addition of PVA improves the thermal stability of PPDO. DSC analysis showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the melting temperature (Tm) of PPDO in the blends were nearly constant and equal to the values for neat PPDO, thus suggesting that PPDO and PVA are immiscible. It was found from the SEM images that the blends were phase‐separated, which was consistent with the DSC results. Additionally, non‐isothermal crystallization under controlled cooling rates was explored, and the Ozawa theory was employed to describe the non‐isothermal crystallization kinetics. A new miscible blend of all compositions comprising poly(4‐vinyl phenol) (PVPh) and poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) was discovered and reported. The blends exhibit a single composition‐dependent glass transition and homogeneous phase morphology, with no lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior upon heating to high temperatures. Interactions and spherulite growth kinetics in the blends were also investigated. The Flory–Huggins interaction parameter (χ12) and interaction energy density (B) obtained from analysis of melting point depression are negative (χ12 = ?0.74 and B = ?32.49 J cm?3), proving that the PVPh/PTT blends are miscible over a wide temperature range from ambient up to high temperatures in the melt state. FTIR studies showed evidence of hydrogen‐bonding interactions between the two polymers. The miscibility of PVPh with PTT also resulted in a reduction in spherulite growth rate of PTT in the miscible blend. The Lauritzen–Hoffman model was used to analyze the spherulite growth kinetics, which showed a lower fold‐surface free energy (σe) of the blends than that of the neat PTT. The decrease in the fold‐surface free energy has been attributed to disruption of the PTT lamellae exerted by PVPh in an intimately interacted miscible state. EVA was blended with phenoxy over the whole range of composition using a twin‐screw Brabender. Two‐phase separation caused by EVA crystallization was observed in the EVA‐rich blends and the dispersed domain of EVA was not clearly shown in the phenoxy‐rich blends. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of EVA was increased by 5–10°C in the EVA‐rich blends but the Tg of phenoxy was superposed over the melting behavior of EVA. X‐ray diffraction measurement indicated that EVA crystallization was restricted in the phenoxy‐rich blends and the EVA crystal structure was influenced by incorporation of phenoxy into the EVA‐rich blends. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The crystallization kinetics of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and their copolymers poly(1,4‐butylene‐co‐ethylene terephthalate) (PBET) containing 70/30, 65/35 and 60/40 molar ratios of 1,4‐butanediol/ethylene glycol were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at crystallization temperatures (Tc) which were 35–90 °C below equilibrium melting temperature . Although these copolymers contain both monomers in high proportion, DSC data revealed for copolymer crystallization behaviour. The reason for such copolymers being able to crystallize could be due to the similar chemical structures of 1,4‐butanediol and ethylene glycol. DSC results for isothermal crystallization revealed that random copolymers had a lower degree of crystallinity and lower crystallite growth rate than those of homopolymers. DSC heating scans, after completion of isothermal crystallization, showed triple melting endotherms for all these polyesters, similar to those of other polymers as reported in the literature. The crystallization isotherms followed the Avrami equation with an exponent n of 2–2.5 for PET and 2.5–3.0 for PBT and PBETs. Analyses of the Lauritzen–Hoffman equation for DSC isothermal crystallization data revealed that PBT and PET had higher growth rate constant Go, and nucleation constant Kg than those of PBET copolymers. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The non‐isothermal and isothermal crystallizations of extruded poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) blends with 10, 20 and 30 wt% poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The formation of α‐form crystals in the blend films was verified using X‐ray diffraction and an increase in crystallinity indexes using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Crystallization and melting temperatures and crystallinity of PLLA increased with decreasing cooling rate (CR) and showed higher values for the blends. Although PLLA crystallized during both cooling and heating, after incorporation of PEG and with CR = 2 °C min?1 its crystallization was completed during cooling. Increasingly distinct with CR, a small peak appeared on the lower temperature flank of the PLLA melting curve in the blends. A three‐dimensional nucleation process with increasing contribution from nuclei growth at higher CR was verified from Avrami analysis, whereas Kissinger's method showed that the diluent effect of 10 and 20 wt% PEG in PLLA decreased the effective energy barrier. During isothermal crystallization, crystallization half‐time increased with temperature (Tic) for the blends, decreased with PEG content and was lower than that of pure PLLA. In addition, the Avrami rate constants were significantly higher than those of pure PLLA, at the lower Tic. Different crystal morphologies in the PLLA phase were formed, melting in a broader and slightly higher Tm range than pure PLLA. The crystallization activation energy of PLLA decreased by 56% after the addition of 10 wt% PEG, increasing though with PEG content. Finally, PEG/PLLA blends presented improved flexibility and hydrophilicity. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Thermal properties and non‐isothermal melt‐crystallization behavior of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The blends exhibit single and composition‐dependent glass transition temperature, cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) and melt crystallization peak temperature (Tmc) over the entire composition range, implying miscibility between the PLA and PTT components. The Tcc values of PTT/PLA blends increase, while the Tmc values decrease with increasing PLA content, suggesting that the cold crystallization and melt crystallization of PTT are retarded by the addition of PLA. The modified Avrami model is satisfactory in describing the non‐isothermal melt crystallization of the blends, whereas the Ozawa method is not applicable to the blends. The estimated Avrami exponent of the PTT/PLA blends ranges from 3.25 to 4.11, implying that the non‐isothermal crystallization follows a spherulitic‐like crystal growth combined with a complicated growth form. The PTT/PLA blends generally exhibit inferior crystallization rate and superior activation energy compared to pure PTT at the same cooling rate. The greater the PLA content in the PTT/PLA blends, the lower the crystallization rate and the higher the activation energy. Moreover, the introduction of PTT into PLA leads to an increase in the thermal stability behavior of the resulting PTT/PLA blends. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The miscibility and hydrogen bonding interaction in the poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate)/poly(4‐vinyl phenol) [P(3HB‐co‐3HH)/PVPh] binary blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The DSC results indicate that P(3HB‐co‐3HH) with 20 mol % 3HH unit content is fully miscible with PVPh, and FTIR studies reveal the existence of hydrogen bonding interaction between the carbonyl groups of P(3HB‐co‐3HH) and the hydroxyl groups of PVPh. The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB‐co‐HV))/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was found that P(HB‐co‐HV)/PVAc blends were miscible in the melt over the whole compositions. Thus the blend exhibited a single glass transition temperature (Tg), which increased with increasing PVAc composition. The spherulitic morphologies of P(HB‐co‐HV)/PVAc blends indicated that the PVAc was predominantly segregated into P(HB‐co‐HV) interlamellar or interfibrillar regions during P(HB‐co‐HV) crystallization because of the volume‐filled spherulites. As to the crystallization kinetics study, it was found that the overall crystallization and crystal growth rates decreased with the addition of PVAc. The kinetics retardation was primarily attributed to the reduction of chain mobility and dilution of P(HB‐co‐HV) upon mixing with higher Tg PVAc. The overall crystallization rate was predominantly governed by the spherulitic growth rate and promoted by the samples treated with the quenched state because of the higher nucleation density. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The calorimetric characteristics of carbon black (CB)/poly(ethylene‐co‐alkyl acrylate) composites depend on both the CB and acrylate contents. An increase of the acrylate content in the pure copolymers tends to decrease all the crystalline characteristics: Tc,n, the nonisothermal crystallization temperature; Tm, the melting temperature, and ΔHm, the melting enthalpy. CB modifies the crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene‐co‐ethyl acrylate) (EEA) alone and in blends with poly(ethylene‐co‐24% w/w methyl acrylate) (24EMA) and poly(ethylene‐co‐35% w/w methyl acrylate) (35EMA). In the presence of CB, Tc,n, the nonisothermal crystallization temperature of EEA, increases and t1/2, the half‐crystallization time, decreases for a given isothermal crystallization temperature, Tc,i. The thermograms obtained during the melting of EEA after isothermal crystallization show multiple endotherms, suggesting that crystalline‐phase segregation has occurred. The existence of different crystalline species can be explained by the presence of fractions of different acrylate content in the copolymers as shown by SEC. Therefore, CB does not seem to have much effect on the subsequent melting temperature of EEA, Tm,s. CB also induces a lower melting enthalpy, Δ Hm, in the blends. This decrease of ΔHm appears to be constant whatever the compound, but when reported to the melting enthalpy of the polymer without CB, δΔHmHm increases with the acrylate content. A slight increase of the amorphous phase stiffness after CB introduction is noticed: The Tg of EEA/24EMA and EEA/35EMA blends increases by several degrees. Therefore, plotting ΔHm versus ΔCp shows that for the same ΔHm the ΔCp is lower in CB‐filled samples, suggesting there is some kind of rigid amorphous phase not contributing to the glass transition. We propose to explain the CB activity during the crystallization process by the existence of molecular interactions between CB and acrylate groups rather than by a pure nucleating effect. Thus, the increase of Tc,n and the decrease of ΔHm could be explained by the fact that CB separates acrylate‐rich chains from the crystallization medium, accelerating the crystallization of the acrylate‐poor chains. During such a crystallization process, CB may be preferentially localized in the more polar amorphous phase and scattered between the two crystalline phases of EEA and EXA. These blends of poly(ethylene‐co‐alkyl acrylate) copolymers with CB provide interesting materials with adjustable properties depending on the acrylate and CB contents and on the thermomechanical treatments. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) is a good biomedical polymer material with wide applications. The addition of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a plasticizer and the formation of stereocomplex crystals (SCs) have been proved to be effective methods for improving the crystallization of PLLA, which will promote its heat resistance. In this work, the crystallization behavior of PEG and PLLA/poly(d ‐lactic acid) (PDLA) in PLLA/PDLA/PEG and PEG‐b‐PLLA/PEG‐b‐PDLA blends has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. Both SCs and homocrystals (HCs) were observed in blends with asymmetric mass ratio of PLLA/PDLA, while exclusively SCs were observed in blends with approximately equal mass ratio of PLLA/PDLA. The crystallization of PEG was only observed for the symmetric blends of PLLA39k/PDLA35k/PEG2k, PLLA39k/PDLA35k/PEG5k, PLLA69k/PDLA96k/PEG5k and PEG‐b‐PLLA31k/PEG‐b‐PDLA27k, where the mass ratio of PLLA/PDLA was approximately 1/1. The results demonstrated that the formation of exclusively SCs would facilitate the crystallization of PEG, while the existence of both HCs and SCs could restrict the crystallization of PEG. The crystallization of PEG is related to the crystallinity of PLLA and PDLA, which will be promoted by the formation of SCs. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Blends of poly(3‐hydroxy butyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxy valerate) (PHBV) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were prepared by casting from chloroform solutions. Crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of blends have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarizing microscopy. Experimental results reveal that the constituents are miscible in the amorphous state. They form separated crystal structures in the solid state. Crystallization behavior of the blends was studied under isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. Owing to the large difference in melting temperatures, the constituents crystallize consecutively in blends; however, the process is affected by the respective second component. PHBV crystallizes from the amorphous mixture of the constituents, at temperatures where the PEO remains in the molten state. PEO, on the other hand, is surrounded during its crystallization process by crystalline PHBV regions. The degree of crystallinity in the blends stays constant for PHBV and decreases slightly for PEO, with ascending PHBV content. The rate of crystallization of PHBV decreases in blends as compared to the neat polymer. The opposite behavior is observed for PEO. Nonisothermal crystallization is discussed in terms of a quasi‐isothermal approach. Qualitatively, the results show the same tendencies as under isothermal conditions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Physical blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene isophthalate) (PEI), abbreviated PET/PEI (80/20) blends, and of PET and a random poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate) copolymer containing 40% ethylene isophthalate (PET60I40), abbreviated PET/PET60I40 (50/50) blends, were melt‐mixed at 270°C for different reactive blending times to give a series of copolymers containing 20 mol % of ethylene isophthalic units with different degrees of randomness. 13C‐NMR spectroscopy precisely determined the microstructure of the blends. The thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were evaluated by DSC and tensile assays, and the obtained results were compared with those obtained for PET and a statistically random PETI copolymer with the same composition. The microstructure of the blends gradually changed from a physical blend into a block copolymer, and finally into a random copolymer with the advance of transreaction time. The melting temperature and enthalpy of the blends decreased with the progress of melt‐mixing. Isothermal crystallization studies carried out on molten samples revealed the same trend for the crystallization rate. The effect of reaction time on crystallizability was more pronounced in the case of the PET/PET60I40 (50/50) blends. The Young's modulus of the melt‐mixed blends was comparable to that of PET, whereas the maximum tensile stress decreased with respect to that of PET. Blended films of poly(L ‐lactide) [ie poly(L ‐lactic acid)] (PLLA) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) without or mixed with 10 wt% poly(L ‐lactide‐co‐?‐caprolactone) (PLLA‐CL) were prepared by solution‐casting. The effects of PLLA‐CL on the morphology, phase structure, crystallization, and mechanical properties of films have been investigated using polarization optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and tensile testing. Addition of PLLA‐CL decreased number densities of spherulites in PLLA and PCL films, and improved the observability of spherulites and the smoothness of cross‐section of the PLLA/PCL blend film. The melting temperatures (Tm) of PLLA and PCL in the films remained unchanged upon addition of PLLA‐CL, while the crystallinities of PLLA and PCL increased at PLLA contents [XPLLA = weight of PLLA/(weight of PLLA and PCL)] of 0.4–0.7 and at most of the XPLLA values, respectively. The addition of PLLA‐CL improved the tensile strength and the Young modulus of the films at XPLLA of 0.5–0.8 and of 0–0.1 and 0.5–0.8, respectively, and the elongation at break of the films at all the XPLLA values. These findings strongly suggest that PLLA‐CL was miscible with PLLA and PCL, and that the dissolved PLLA‐CL in PLLA‐rich and PCL‐rich phases increased the compatibility between these two phases. © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene chloride‐co‐acrylonitrile) (Saran F), poly(hydroxy ether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy), poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (PSAN), and poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh) all have the same characteristic: miscibility with atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (aPMMA). However, the miscibility of Saran F with the other polymer (phenoxy, PSAN, or PVPh) is not guaranteed and was thus investigated. Saran F was found to be miscible only with PSAN but not miscible with phenoxy and PVPh. Because Saran F and PVPh are not miscible, although they are both miscible with aPMMA, aPMMA can thus be used as a potential cosolvent to homogenize PVPh/Saran F. The second part of this report focused on the miscibility of a ternary blend consisting of Saran F, PVPh, and aPMMA to investigate the cosolvent effect of aPMMA. Factors affecting the miscibility were studied. The established phase diagram indicated that the ternary blends with high PVPh/Saran F weight ratio were found to be mostly immiscible. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hexa‐armed star‐shaped poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(L ‐lactide) (6sPCL‐b‐PLLA) with dipentaerythritol core were synthesized by a two‐step ring‐opening polymerization. GPC and 1H NMR data demonstrate that the polymerization courses are under control. The molecular weight of 6sPCLs and 6sPCL‐b‐PLLAs increases with increasing molar ratio of monomer to initiator, and the molecular weight distribution is in the range of 1.03–1.10. The investigation of the melting and crystallization demonstrated that the values of crystallization temperature (Tc), melting temperature (Tm), and the degree of crystallinity (Xc) of PLLA blocks are increased with the chain length increase of PLLA in the 6sPCL‐b‐PLLA copolymers. On the contrary, the crystallization of PCL blocks dominates when the chain length of PLLA is too short. According to the results of polarized optical micrographs, both the spherulitic growth rate (G) and the spherulitic morphology are affected by the macromolecular architecture and the length of the block chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility of blends of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was studied by measuring the cloud point, melting point depression and crystallization kinetics. Lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior was observed at PCL-rich compositions, whilst it was not observed at high compositions of PVDF. However it is possible that an LCST could exist below the melting point of PVDF. From analysis of the melting point depression, the Flory interaction parameter x12, was calculated from the Nishi-Wang equation and the value was found to be-1.5. The crystallization rate of PCL increased with increasing amount of PVDF in the blend. The spinodal curve for PCL/PVDF blends was simulated by using the lattice-fluid theory.  相似文献
