In the previous articles on DECnet/OSI the focus has been on the technical aspects of Digital's implementation, alias Advantage Networks. The openness of Advantage Networks is both good and bad. It's good because you have the freedom to mix and match network devices to fit your specific needs. It's bad because a heterogeneous network environment will be very difficult to manage. In this article the discussion is on Digital's concept of managing a DECnet/OSI network management.

“How Negative Becomes Less Negative”: Understanding the Effects of Comment Valence and Response Sidedness in Social Media

This study explores the influence of the public's negative comments regarding a corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaign in social media and how to best respond to them. It examined the interaction effects of comment valence and the company's response sidedness on the public's attitudes as mediated by the perceived negativity and perceived altruism. Results revealed that 2‐sided CSR responses are more effective than 1‐sided responses in enhancing altruistic motives for CSR, reducing perceived negativity in the public's comments, and eliciting favorable attitudes, especially when comments were negative. The effects of message sidedness disappeared when the public's comments were positive. Results also showed that perceived altruism and negativity mediate the effects of message strategies on the public's attitudes toward the company.

Patent Do's and D'oh!

The process of getting a US patent goes something like this: you work with your patent lawyer or agent to prepare an application that describes your invention in exhaustive detail; the Patent Office rejects all of your claims in curt, dismissive terms; your counsel says not to panic and, in most cases, persuades the patent examiner to allow at least some claims; and, finally, two or more years after you first filed, agony gives way to ecstasy and the beribboned patent deed issues forth. But legal traps along the way may deprive the unwary of some or even all patent riots. Worse, you may not learn of a mistake until years later, after the patent has issued, when some alert lawyer asks a few innocent-sounding questions about a conference paper you gave and, shortly after, asks the court to invalidate your patent. The author describes how the most common mistakes fall into three categories: those that threaten US rights, those affecting foreign rights, and the effects of patent filings on trade secrets.

Incentives in Ethereum's hybrid Casper protocol

We present an overview of hybrid Casper the Friendly Finality Gadget (FFG), a proof‐of‐stake checkpointing protocol overlaid onto Ethereum's proof‐of‐work blockchain. We describe its core functionalities and reward scheme and explore its properties. Our findings indicate that Casper's implemented incentives mechanism ensures liveness, while providing safety guarantees that improve over standard proof‐of‐work protocols. On the basis of a minimal impact implementation of the protocol as a smart contract on the blockchain, we discuss additional issues related to parametrization, funding, throughput, and network overhead and detect potential limitations.     

How a company’s gamification strategy influences corporate learning: A study based on gamified MSLP (Mobile social learning platform)

Advances in personal devices and communication technologies have changed the learning landscape. Gamification is the use of technology to promote and induce the user's internal motivation by exploiting the game's characteristics. Recently, mobile learning applications introduce various gamification strategies to provoke users' voluntary participation. However, empirical evidence on how to attract users and influence sustained usage is limited. This study establishes a theoretical basis for designing learning applications and discusses its impact on business. A series of gamification strategies such as Competition, Challenge, Compensation, Relationship, and Usability, were applied to a company's Mobile Social Learning Platform (MSLP). A survey result of 293 users from South Korea was used for the advanced mediation model analysis. The result showed that Challenge, Relationship, and Usability had affected Flow and Continuous usage intention. This paper argues that the user's usage intention will have a positive effect on voluntary learning. It also provides a significant implication for organizational effectiveness through the development and application of mobile learning platform.

Professional Mobile Radio — the BT Airwave Public Safety Service and the Path for Technology and Service Evolution

Professional mobile radio (PMR) has often been perceived as the 'Cinderella' of the mobility market; however, a wide range of corporate mobile business communications people use PMR intensively, because both its unique functionality and its performance match their requirements bettern than other mobile technologies.Although there are several new digital PMR technologies, the new ETSI TETRA (terrestrial trunked radio) standard, which offers enhanced speech and data facilities, is a major factor in the quiet revolution in which more and more business users are adopting PMR to meet their mobile communications needs. This market is estimated to be worth over £ 10bn by 2004.TETRA is also receiving global acceptance outside Europe with contracts and/or commitments already in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and China, with interest being shown in North America (Com-Net Ericsson/Marconi contract for Florida).BT Quadrant and BT Airwave have been very successful in capturing a significant part of the UK 'public safety' (police, fire, ambulance, etc) market. A Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract worth £2.5bn was secured at the beginning of this year for the supply of PMR communications to the police and other 'blue light' services. This contract has a lifetime of over 15 years and it is therefore important to look ahead at how the present capabilities may be evolved to enhance the service, at a time when the capabilities of public cellular networks will be enhanced by new 3rd generation developments.This paper reviews the BT Airwave service for public safety users and discusses how it may be developed to provide users with greater flexibility and increased working effectiveness.     

Validating specifications: a contract-based approach

The role of contracts in validating specifications has been neglected in research, as they are thought of as commercial and legal documents with little value as far as validation is concerned. The term "validate" does not mean preapproval before production, but acceptance of performance of the supplier (through validation parameters contained in a contract) to deliver to specification during the development/production of the final product. This paper demonstrates the role of contracts in validating specifications by proposing the elements of a contract that can aid validation. Two in-depth case studies were conducted in one auto and one aircraft original-equipment manufacturing located in Europe. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews and analysis of archival sources. A strategic contract structure encompassing two categories of elements, the validation criteria for entry and the validation criteria for remaining in the business, is proposed. The strategic contract structure can aid managers involved in the specification process to structure development projects with suppliers. This will help attain planned goals     

Experimental determination of the Young's modulus of copper and solder materials for electronic packaging

The paper presents details about the adequate experimental determination of the Young's modulus on miniaturised specimens for material used in electronic packaging. The difficulty to determine accurately the Young's modulus is caused by the requirements of representative specimens for the area of electronic packaging. In many cases, such specimens e.g. solder balls are connected with the issues of inhomogeneous stress distributions, small dimensions, or special gripping requirements, that create a number of challenges to conduct mechanical experiments. In addition, there are problems that arise from the nonlinearities in the constitutive behaviour of the material to be characterised, such as creep deformation. Therefore, any attempt to accurately determine the Young's modulus needs a case to case consideration of the specific issues for the given specimen and material.
