A polymer waveguide notch filter using two stacked thermooptic long-period gratings is proposed. It is a long-period waveguide grating whose transmission spectrum can be dynamically controlled. Thermooptic index perturbation, i.e., grating is temporarily induced by two groups of periodic heaters stacked vertically on the filter surface. The periods of the two groups are determined such that two different resonance bands are generated in the spectrum by the respective groups. Thus, the overall spectrum may be actively shaped by controlling the individual power applied to the two groups. Its feasibility is demonstrated experimentally by fabricating it with thermocurable polymers.  相似文献

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the power consumption of a notch filter using a thermooptic long-period grating, which is induced by a heater array consisting of periodic heaters and pads made of metal thin-film. Since the power consumed by the heater array is converted to joule heat that generates the thermooptic long-period grating, the characteristics of the notch filter are dynamically controlled by adjusting it. The power necessary for appropriate coupling efficiency depends on the parameters of the heater array, which are the width and length of a heater, pad width, and the thickness of the thin-film. To analyze the dependence, we fabricated several notch filters with different heater lengths and pad widths. In addition, we simulated the influence of the parameters on the power consumption using some approximation and assumptions. Through the experiment and the simulation, it is shown that the experimentally obtained changes of the consumed power depending on the parameters follow a trend achieved theoretically. Moreover, the experimental results show that the consumed power decreases by more than 50% as the heater length is reduced from 500 to 50 mum. Finally, we suggest a few guidelines on the parameters required to reduce the power consumption.  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate an improved optical signal-to-noise ratio monitoring scheme based on a double-resolution arrayed-waveguide grating-based power monitoring circuit concatenating with a tunable periodic notch filter. This device, which can be implemented in an integrated power line carrier, exhibits much higher extinction ratio and dynamic range than current available schemes. It is also less sensitive to spectrum shape of the signal.  相似文献

A new technique to generate and distribute a wide-band continuously tunable millimeter-wave signal using an optical external modulator and a wavelength-fixed optical notch filter is proposed. The optical intensity modulator is biased to suppress the odd-order optical sidebands. The wavelength-fixed optical notch filter is then used to filter out the optical carrier. Two second-order optical sidebands are obtained at the output of the notch filter. A millimeter-wave signal that has four times the frequency of the microwave drive signal is generated by beating the two second-order optical sidebands at a photodetector. Since no tunable optical filter is used, the system is easy to implement. A system using an LiNbO/sub 3/ intensity modulator and a fiber Bragg grating filter is built. A stable and high spectral purity millimeter-wave signal tunable from 32 to 50 GHz is obtained by tuning the microwave drive signal from 8 to 12.5 GHz. The integrity of the generated millimeter-wave signal is maintained after transmission over a 25-km standard single-mode fiber. Theoretical analysis on the harmonic suppression with different modulation depths and filter attenuations is also discussed.  相似文献

The proposed filter relies on the creation of a resonant optical cavity between a high-reflectivity mirror and a periodic grating, with a phase control section in between. In this paper, an improved design of a tunable optical filter device which is driven by a piezoelectric actuator is proposed. The device can be used either as a tunable optical filter for discrete wavelength alignment or as a dynamic optical filter. The tunable filter is electrostatically driven and consists of three main parts: The electromechanical stage, the suspension and the thin film optical filter. The electromechanical stage and the suspension were designed using graph presentation methods, studied numerically using the finite element method (FEM). The thin film optical filter was designed by a thin film design software. The electromechanical stage was integrated with the suspension and tested as an angular driver of thin-film tilt interference filter for dense-wavelength division demultiplexing system applications.  相似文献

A novel corrugated structure on an optical fiber is proposed and demonstrated to produce tunable long-period index modulation based on photoelastic effect. The corrugated structure is a periodic variation made by chemical etching on the cladding radius of an optical fiber. By imposing this corrugated structure upon a built-in fiber Bragg grating (FBG), a superstructure grating with tunable reflectance is formed. In addition, couplings between the fundamental core mode and cladding modes take place under such a corrugated structure when the phase-matching condition is satisfied. Thus, the device can also act effectively as a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with tunable coupling strength. We also develop the coupled-mode theory based on Fourier series expansion to describe such a corrugated sampled Bragg grating. The phase-matching condition for various sampling orders can be derived, and the calculated spectra are compared with those based on the fundamental matrix method. Optical measurements demonstrate some unique characteristics of these devices, and good qualitative agreements between simulation and measurement verify the viewpoint that long periodic index modulation is indeed induced by such a corrugated structure through the photoelastic effect when a tensile force is applied  相似文献

An opto-very-large-scale-integrated (opto-VLSI)-based tunable optical filter structure is demonstrated. Filter tunability is achieved by reconfiguring the holographic diffraction grating of an opto-VLSI processor, allowing virtually any type of filter response to be synthesized. A proof-of-concept tunable notch filter with wavelength span of 7 nm is experimentally verified.  相似文献

A MEMS tunable integrated waveguide Bragg grating-based filter for C-band optical dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) network is presented and analyzed in this work. Waveguide Bragg grating being a notch filter in the transmission spectrum is used to realize a tunable filter by varying the applied voltages to the fixed–fixed beam loaded with this grating. The strain across the grating is enhanced by choosing MEMS beam configuration such that the metal electrode is the bottom-most layer of the composite fixed–fixed beam. Device dimensions are chosen to achieve a narrow full width half maximum of 0.77 nm, allowing filtering of adjacent channels of 100 GHz DWDM network. A large Bragg wavelength shift of 10.4 nm (1552.52–1562.92 nm) was achieved at 45.8 V actuation providing tuning for 14 DWDM channels with inter-channel cross talk below ? 21 dB, with tuning range of 1.3 THz.

The realization of high-performance components based on optical infinite impulse response (IIR) filter design theory is desirable for next-generation global optical networks. Previously proposed IIR filter synthesis methods are matrix factorization techniques for a lattice circuit using ring resonators. The size of ring resonator limits the bandwidth of the lattice filters. In this paper, two configurations of grating lattice filters are synthesized by using a scattering matrix representation for the grating. The grating is one of the most powerful optical elements both in fiber optics and photonic integrated circuits. One configuration is a serial grating lattice filter configuration and the other is a parallel grating lattice filter configuration. The actual frequency response of the synthesized grating lattice filter is calculated to show the design limitation due to the frequency response of the element gratings  相似文献

We have developed a new type of tunable band rejection filter, which provides high spectral-shaping flexibility in a wide tuning range. The filter consists of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with divided coil heaters. Each of the divided coil heaters is controlled individually to adjust a temperature distribution along the LPFG and to modify the spectral shape of the LPFG filter. The tunable band rejection filter is demonstrated to function properly when applied as an erbium-doped fiber amplifier gain-flattening filter.  相似文献

Based on the vernier effect, widely tunable polymer double micro-ring filters using the thermooptic effect or the electrooptic effect are demonstrated. A tuning enhancement factor of 40 was achieved at wavelengths near 1550 nm. The tuning rate for the thermooptic device is 120 GHz/mW and for the electrooptic device is 120 GHz/12 V. A tunable laser with a side-mode suppression ratio greater than 30 dB was demonstrated using this filter and erbium-doped fiber amplifier gain. Thermal tuning over 35 nm was achieved.  相似文献

A novel fiber-optic Fabry-Perot resonator composed of a piece of fiber with two LP01&rlarr2;LP02 mode-conversion reflectors is proposed and theoretically investigated. The reflective fiber-optic LP01&rlarr2;LP02 mode converter is analyzed based on the coupled-mode theory. The resonance characteristics including the transmission, reflection, and circulation of this novel fiber resonator are examined. In addition, we also describe the application of this device as an optical filter which can be used for FDM/WDM communications, etc. In contrast to a conventional Fabry-Perot optical filter with a periodic output spectrum, our proposed optical filter has only one peak in output spectrum, while the bandwidth of the filter spectrum is very narrow, with several Megahertz determined mainly by the cavity length of the fiber resonator. Finally, it is demonstrated that the characteristic of this optical frequency filter can be greatly improved by introducing a gain mechanism using a rare-earth-doped fiber. For a practical optical fiber recirculating delay line the maximum notch depth and tunable free spectral range are difficult to achieve because of fixed coupling coefficient and loop length. We present here an optical fiber recirculating delay line incorporating a fiber grating array. In this work, the effect of insertion loss in the delay loop is investigated and used to maximize the notch depth of the frequency response. 针对亚波长光栅偏振分束器无法实现垂直出射光 、集成耦合效率低的问题,本文设计了 一种具有光束偏转功能的亚波长光栅偏振分束器,可实现偏振分束且能获得垂直出射光。器 件上 层采用光栅衍射理论设计了可实现偏振分束的周期亚波长光栅,下层通过严格耦合波法与波 前相 位控制理论设计了具有光束偏转功能的非周期亚波长光栅。基于有限元软件COMSOL对设计 的器 件进行仿真分析,结果表明该器件可分开TE与TM混合偏振光且能实现光束垂直出射,两种 偏振 光的总透射率在1550nm处超过了76.5%,偏振 消光比为14.0 dB。因此通过该偏振分束器不但可 以获得垂直出射的单偏振光,而且能有效提高垂直耦合型器件的工作效率,有望应用在面向 光纤通信的集成光电器件中。  相似文献

We demonstrate a novel optical circuit that has the potential of simultaneous demodulation and all-optical clock-recovery of 40-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signals. A key device of the circuit is an ad hoc periodic fiber Bragg grating filter that simultaneously demodulates the input signals and seeds a series of clock recovery circuits. We report the complete characterization of the proposed scheme in the whole-band using a tunable transmitter. The DPSK demodulated signals show enhanced resilience to chromatic dispersion with respect to the usual NRZ ON-OFF keying format. On the other hand, the recovered clock signals are very stable and have around 200-fs root-mean-square time jitter.  相似文献

An electro-optical tunable filter comprised of two paralleled identical long-period waveguide gratings is proposed in this paper. The filter has one input port and two separate output ports, outputting band-pass and band-rejection light respectively. Using poled electro-optical polymer material to fabricate its waveguide cores enable the filter’s tuning speed to approach nanosecond order. With the aid of long-period waveguide gratings, the tuning range of the filter is Λ times larger than the conventional electro-optical filters. We built up a model to design and simulate the proposed tunable optical filter. We investigate the relationship between the parameters of the long-period waveguide grating and the characteristics of the tunable filter, such as tuning range and FWHM. The simulation results show that the tunable optical filter can realize high-speed tuning in the wavelength range of 1530 nm to 1560 nm, and the FWHM width can reach 0.8 nm. Compared with the conventional optical filters, the results show that a high-speed widely tunable optical filter with narrow pass band can be achieved.  相似文献
