For many years, a great amount of work has been done on the problems of symmetrical multiple radial cracks in the thick walled cylinder. But, up to now, nothing has been done on asymmetrical multiple radial cracks in thick walled cylinders. This paper deals with two and three asymmetrical radial cracks, and the stress intensity factors (SIF) due to two kinds of internal pressures and full autofrettage process has been calculated using finite element method and the influence of crack configurations on SIF is discussed.  相似文献

The weld magnification factor method has been widely used in the determination of the stress intensity factor (SIF) for weld-toe cracks in welded structural components. Weld magnification factors M kare normally derived from two-dimensional crack models with fillet weld profiles to take account of the effect of weld-notch stress concentration at the deepest point of the crack front. This paper presents a detailed three-dimensional analysis of weld-toe surface cracks in fillet welded T-butt joint models using the finite element method. Effects of the weld notch and the welded attachment stiffness on the SIFs of the weld-toe surface cracks have been studied quantitatively. Weld magnification factors applying to the whole surface crack fronts have been estimated. Numerical results show two contradictory effects; that the effect of weld notch increases SIF values throughout the shallow surface crack fronts which are in the region of notch stress concentration, while the effect of local structural constraint reduces the SIF values. The increase in the SIF values mainly depends upon the relative crack front depth and the decrease in the SIF values mainly depends upon the crack shape aspect ratio for a specific weld profile. Both effects on the weld magnification factors can be estimated separately. A simple approach for deriving the weld magnification factors for various weld-toe surface crack problems is proposed for engineering applications.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of multiple penny-shaped cracks in an elastic solid cylinder under mode I (axial tension) loading. The cracks are located symmetrically and in parallel to one another in the isotropic cylinder. The fractal-like finite element method (FFEM) is employed to study the interaction of multiple cracks and to demonstrate the efficiency of the FFEM for multiple crack problems. The results show that the SIF values of the inner cracks, which are denoted as crack number 1,2,3,…,(n+1)/2 of a stack of n parallel cracks, are lower than the SIF values of a single crack by between 16% and 48%. Also, the outermost crack, that is the crack closest to the boundaries of a multiple cracked body, has the highest SIF values and is, therefore, likely to fail first.  相似文献

Three‐dimensional (3D) opening mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for structural steel‐welded ‘T’ details were investigated by the finite element method. A 3D shape‐dependent correction factor is proposed for semi‐elliptical surface cracks. The aspect ratio (a/c) of a semi‐elliptical crack plays a key role in the approximation of 3D‐SIF values, and in the present study, it was estimated for a 3D crack analysis. The estimated 3D‐SIF was determined through a correlation between the a/c ratio and the two‐dimensional SIF for semi‐elliptical cracks in the thickness direction adjacent to the web‐flange junction of a welded ‘T’. The resulting equation can be used to estimate the 3D‐SIF values from the two‐dimensional SIF without much ambiguity.  相似文献

This paper presents methodologies for fracture analysis of concrete structural components with and without considering tension softening effect. Stress intensity factor (SIF) is computed by using analytical approach and finite element analysis. In the analytical approach, SIF accounting for tension softening effect has been obtained as the difference of SIF obtained using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principles and SIF due to closing pressure. Superposition principle has been used by accounting for non-linearity in incremental form. SIF due to crack closing force applied on the effective crack face inside the process zone has been computed using Green's function approach. In finite element analysis, the domain integral method has been used for computation of SIF. The domain integral method is used to calculate the strain energy release rate and SIF when a crack grows. Numerical studies have been conducted on notched 3-point bending concrete specimen with and without considering the cohesive stresses. It is observed from the studies that SIF obtained from the finite element analysis with and without considering the cohesive stresses is in good agreement with the corresponding analytical value. The effect of cohesive stress on SIF decreases with increase of crack length. Further, studies have been conducted on geometrically similar structures and observed that (i) the effect of cohesive stress on SIF is significant with increase of load for a particular crack length and (iii) SIF values decreases with increase of tensile strength for a particular crack length and load.  相似文献

To increase the operational life of defected structures, a repairing method using composite patches has been used to reinforce cracked components. Due to various advantages of composite materials, this method has received much attention from researchers and engineers. Considerable investigations have been performed to highlight the effect of bonded composite patches on the fracture parameters such as stress intensity factors (SIF) and J-integral. However the effect of composite patches on the T-stress, the constant stress term acting parallel to the crack, has not been investigated in the past. In this paper, the finite element method is carried out to analyze the effect of bonded composite patches for repairing cracks in pure mode I and also mixed mode I/II conditions, by computing the stress intensity factors and the T-stress, as functions of the crack length, the crack inclination angle and the type of composite material. In pure mode I condition, the finite element analysis is carried out for three different specimens: centre crack, double edge crack and single edge crack specimens. For mixed mode I/II condition the analysis is conducted on an inclined central crack of various slant angles. For both pure mode I and mixed mode I/II, the numerical results show that composite patching has considerable effect on the T-stress.  相似文献

The fatigue life of cracked steel members can be greatly extended by externally attached carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP), which reduces the stress intensity factors (SIFs) at the crack tip. Access to cracks is sometimes limited and the CFRP has to be attached away from the cracks. There is a lack of knowledge on SIFs for such strengthening scheme. This paper presents the effects of CFRP bond locations on the Mode I SIF of centre‐cracked tensile (CCT) steel plate. The Mode I SIF at the crack tip is calculated using the finite element (FE) models. A correction factor is introduced as a function of CFRP bond location and crack length. The FE results are compared and agree well with experimental tests conducted by the authors. By combining with another two factors (one considering CFRP mechanical properties and the other considering CFRP bond width) derived previously by the authors, SIF formulae are proposed for CFRP reinforced CCT steel plates.  相似文献

Thermal stresses, one of the main causes of interfacial failure between dissimilar materials, arise from different coefficients of linear thermal expansion. Two efficient numerical procedures in conjunction with the finite element method (FEM) for the stress intensity factor (SIF) analysis of interface cracks under thermal stresses are presented. The virtual crack extension method and the crack closure integral method are modified using the superposition method. The SIF analyses of some interface crack problems under mechanical and thermal loads are demonstrated. Very accurate mode separated SIFs are obtained using these methods.  相似文献

Two and three parallel cracks in a finite sheet subjected to remote tensile loading have been studied. This paper presents empirical stress intensity factor formulae for these crack configurations. The stress intensity factors used to develop these formulae were obtained from finite element analysis. For central cracks and edge cracks, the formulae were within 1 and 3% of the finite element results, respectively.  相似文献

A predictive method for estimation of stress state at zone of crack tip and assessment of remaining component lifetime depend on the stress intensity factor (SIF). This paper discusses the numerical approach for prediction of first ply failure load (FL), progressive failure load, SIF and critical SIF for multiple cracks configurations of laminated composite finite plate using finite element method (FEM). The Hashin and Chang failure criterion are incorporated in ABAQUS using subroutine approach user defined field variables (USDFLD) for prediction of progressive fracture response of laminated composite finite plate, which is not directly available in the software. A tensile experiment on laminated composite finite plate with stress concentration is performed to validate the numerically predicted subroutine results, shows excellent agreement. The typical results are presented to examine effect of changing the crack tip distance (S), crack offset distance (H), and stacking fiber angle (θ) on FL, and SIF .  相似文献

Stress intensity factors for cracks in bolted joints   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of the bolted joint with single and double cracks were examined. Changes in friction, clearance, applied force and crack angle were included in the nonlinear contact finite element analysis. A fine mesh was made between the contact surface and the crack tip in order to obtain an accurate solution. The least-squares method was used to determine the mixed-mode SIFs. Finite element results indicate that reasonable changes in the applied force, frictional coefficient and the clearance will not make significant changes in the normalized SIFs. The pure opening mode for cracked bolted joints does not occur at the horizontal crack but occurs at the crack with the crack angle between 0° and 22.5°. Nevertheless, using the SIF for a horizontal crack as the maximum opening-crack mode is sufficiently reliable. The maximum mode-II crack is approximately at a crack angle of 45° for both isotropic and orthotropic materials; however, at that angle the maximum mode-II SIF is only about one half of the mode-I SIF. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Three-dimensional finite element analyses are performed on through-thickness cracks with slightly wavy front in center-cracked plates. Considering there is an inherent relationship between the crack shape and the corresponding stress intensity factor (SIF) distribution of a crack, the curved configuration of the crack is determined using a heuristically derived iterative procedure if the SIF distribution function is known. Several simple SIF distribution functions, for instance the constant SIF distribution along the crack front, are assumed to determine the crack shape. Under the assumption that the rate of fatigue crack growth depends on the SIF range or the effective SIF range, possible effects of plate thickness, crack length and crack closure level gradient on the behaviour of crack tunneling are investigated. The stability of the curved shape of a through-thickness crack in fatigue is also discussed, i.e. whether a crack can maintain its shape satisfying the conditions of constant SIF distribution or other distribution along the crack front during fatigue growth. This study will be useful for a better understanding of the behaviour of crack tunneling and help to evaluate the validity of the two-dimensional linear elastic fracture mechanics in cracked plates.  相似文献

In the present study the problem of calculation of the stress intensity factors (SIF) of semi-elliptical cracks located in the stress concentration areas of a pressure vessel is numerically solved by advanced global-local finite element (FE) analysis. The common characteristic of the cases solved is that the stress field at the crack area varies along the axial, the circumferential, as well as, the through-the-thickness directions. SIF solutions for such problems are not available, neither analytically, nor numerically, as the currently existing solutions in the literature (numerical results, Newman-Raju empirical equations, weight function solutions, etc.) are only valid for uniform stress distribution along the axial and circumferential directions of the pressure vessel and allow variation only through-the-thickness. The crack locations considered are the intersection of the cylinder to a nozzle and the connection of the cylinder with its hemi-spherical ends. The stress intensity factors are presented in a suitable table format for various geometrical configurations of both the pressure vessel and the semi-elliptical crack, thus providing a useful tool for the fracture mechanics design of cracked pressure vessels. The modeling details of the sub-structuring methodology, employed in the analysis, are extensively discussed and the numerical approach is proven to be very efficient for the SIF calculation of pressure vessel semi-elliptical cracks.  相似文献

The knowledge of the stress intensity factor (SIF) values along a crack front is essential to calculate the crack growth rate and the remaining life of a mechanical component. In the case of a rotating shaft, usually it presents disalignments, which modify the SIF data with regard to a balanced one. This paper presents the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) for estimating the SIF at the crack front in an unbalanced shaft under rotating bending, previously, a quasi‐static numerical (finite element) model, which simulates a rotating shaft, has been developed to create the training cases for the ANN. The obtained results allow to study the influence of the unbalance of rotating shafts in the crack breathing mechanism and will allow to predict the influence of this behaviour on the values of the SIF and in the propagation of cracks.  相似文献

Extensions of a new technique for the finite element modelling of cracks with multiple branches, multiple holes and cracks emanating from holes are presented. This extended finite element method (X‐FEM) allows the representation of crack discontinuities and voids independently of the mesh. A standard displacement‐based approximation is enriched by incorporating discontinuous fields through a partition of unity method. A methodology that constructs the enriched approximation based on the interaction of the discontinuous geometric features with the mesh is developed. Computation of the stress intensity factors (SIF) in different examples involving branched and intersecting cracks as well as cracks emanating from holes are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed technique. A closed form solution for C* integral of two interacting cracks in plates under tension is developed on the basis of reference stress method. Comprehensive finite element (FE) creep analyses are carried out to provide the benchmark of the interaction evaluation of multiple cracks. Results indicate that more pronounced interaction is observed between the C* of double cracks and that of a single crack compared to that denoted by stress intensity factor (SIF). Overall good agreement is achieved between the proposed method for C* of multiple crack interaction and the FE results which provides confidence in practical application.  相似文献

A rectangular plate with inclined cracks of different crack lengths at different crack inclination angles under biaxial loading condition are being analyzed in mixed mode condition using finite element method (FEM) for the determination of stress intensity factors (SIFs). With increases of the width of the plate and the crack length ratio, SIF increases up to 45° of crack inclination angle and then decreases; maximum value is obtained at 45° of crack inclination angle. With the increasing value of size factor, the value of SIF starts decreasing. The accuracy of the results of the proposed method is validated by comparing with the previously obtained results by theoretical and experimental methods. The FEM results give significant result for the two-dimensional mixed mode loading conditions.  相似文献

In this article, the extended finite element method is employed to solve problems, including weak and strong discontinuities. To this end, a level set framework is used to represent the discontinuities location, and the Heaviside and Branch function are included in the standard finite element method. The case of two arbitrary curved cracks is solved numerically and stress intensity factor (SIF) values at the crack tips are calculated based on the evaluation of the crack tip opening displacement. Afterwards, J-integral methodology is adopted to evaluate the SIFs for isotropic and anisotropic bi-material interface crack problems. Numerical results are verified with those presented in the literature.  相似文献
