The attentional functioning of nondysphoric, mildly dysphoric, and moderately to severely dysphoric college students was tested using the attentional blink (AB) paradigm. These groups performed equally well at reporting a single target appearing in a rapidly presented stream of stimuli. All groups showed an AB, with report sensitivity for a 2nd target being reduced when the 2 targets were presented less than 0.5 s apart. Nondysphoric and mildly dysphoric participants showed the same size ABs, but the ABs for moderately to severely dysphoric participants were larger and longer. As predicted, the results showed that moderately to severely dysphoric individuals have attentional impairments. These impairments, however, were evident only in the more demanding dual-task condition. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Presents a critical analysis of the view that a general attention deficit can be identified and objectively measured in children. Research regarding the specific nature of attentional difficulties in hyperactive children and the measurement of attention and attention deficits is selectively reviewed. School psychologists are cautioned against premature use of the attention deficit disorder label and measurement strategies for the following reasons: (a) The experimental, clinical, and educational literature reviewed indicates that a consensual definition of attention deficit is lacking; (b) research and theory have not yet adequately identified the specific attentional processes in question; and (c) few clearly conceptualized measures of specific attention deficits are yet available that have been adequately normed for use with children for diagnostic and programming purposes. A variety of impairments in visual attention can follow damage to the brain. The authors develop systematic methods for analyzing such impairments in terms of C. Bundesen's (see record 1991-03287-001) Theory of Visual Attention and apply these in a group of 9 patients with parietal lobe lesions and variable spatial neglect. In whole report, patients report letters from brief, vertical arrays in left or right visual field. The results show substantial, largely bilateral impairments in processing capacity, implying a major nonlateralized aspect to neglect. In partial report, arrays contain 1 or 2 letters in red and/or green. The task is to report only those letters in a specified target color. In addition to the expected bias against left-sided letters, patients show striking, bilateral preservation of top-down control, or attentional priority for targets. The results show how differentiation of attentional impairments can be informed by a theory of normal function. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Conducted two studies to test and refine the hypothesis that, when undersocialized individuals focus on events of immediate interest, they allocate too large a proportion of their processing resources to those events and have little attention available for processing other important events. College students who completed the Socialization (So) scale (Gough, 1960) performed visual and auditory tasks simultaneously under conditions favoring the visual task, an equal division of processing resources between the tasks, or both. In both studies, low-So Ss performed relatively poorly on the auditory task under focusing conditions but displayed no primary task advantage and no significant performance deficits under divided attention conditions. These data support the utility of theories relating antisocial behavior to individual differences in allocation of attention. Low-So Ss' unresponsiveness to secondary events is not a simple function of the reallocation of resources to the primary task or a speed–accuracy trade-off. Moreover, under certain conditions, this deficit may disappear, given substantial practice. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between subjective fatigue and selective attention deficits following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Forty-six participants with mild-severe TBI and 46 healthy controls completed fatigue scales (Visual Analogue Scale--Fatigue, Fatigue Severity Scale [FSS] and Causes of Fatigue Questionnaire [COF]), and attentional measures including subtests from the Test of Everyday Attention, and the Complex Selective Attention Task (C-SAT). TBI participants reported greater fatigue on the FSS and COF, performed more slowly on attentional measures, and made more errors on the C-SAT. After controlling for anxiety and depression, fatigue was significantly correlated with performance only on the C-SAT. Findings suggest a relationship between subjective fatigue and impairment on tasks requiring higher order attentional processes. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In a controlled study of patients attending a concussion clinic because of ongoing postconcussion symptoms, attention deficits were recorded in the head-injured group for the aspects of alertness, assessed by the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), and processing capacity, assessed by a version of the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT). Selective attention was intact. Hypnotizability was assessed by the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A (HGSHS:A), with normal means and standard deviations found in both the concussed and control groups. There was a significant correlation, however, between HGSHS:A scores and PASAT scores in the concussed group only. The results of this preliminary study suggest that slower processing capacity after a closed head injury may predict higher hypnotizability and that hypnosis could be an appropriate rehabilitation technique for these patients who present with postconcussion symptoms.  相似文献

Compared 2 common and sometimes comorbid developmental disorders, reading disability (RD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in 2 cognitive domains, phonological processes (PPs) and executive functions (EFs). Ss were 70 boys of early school age, studied by means of a 2 (RD vs no RD)?×?2 (ADHD vs no ADHD)?×?2 (domain type) mixed-model design. The 2 RD groups (RD-only and RD plus ADHD) were significantly impaired compared with both the control and ADHD-only groups on a PP composite score but performed normally on the EF composite score. The ADHD-only group had an opposite profile and was significantly different from both RD groups and from controls on the EF composite score. Thus, there was a double-dissociation between the RD-only and ADHD-only groups. The comorbid group resembled the RD-only group, consistent with the hypothesis that their ADHD symptoms are secondary to RD. These results provide evidence for the separability of PPs from EFs, as well as 1 explanation for the comorbidity between RD and ADHD. Comments on S. R. Hakola's (see record 1993-31739-001) article on the legal rights of students with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A contrasting perspective on educational services for children with ADHD, linked more closely to professional research and practice than to law, is presented. This perspective is grounded in a scientist–practitioner model of practice and driven by attention to student outcomes. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Although comorbidity with specific learning disabilities is less frequent than commonly reported, externalizing behavior disorders, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often overlap with various indices of academic underachievement during childhood. Furthermore, by adolescence, delinquency is clearly associated with school failure. Because the link between behavioral and learning problems often appears before formal schooling, and because the comorbid problems predict a negative course, early intervention is a necessity. Controlled treatment investigations with youngsters who show these combined problems are rare, and such studies present a host of methodologic and practical problems. Issues are discussed surrounding multimodality treatment programs and the potential for long-term interventions to break cycles of school failure and externalizing behavior. The authors investigated selective attention in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), using a well-known visual search procedure. In simple feature search, the deficit observed in AD patients represented a baseline shift in the median hit reaction time (RT). On the conjoined feature search task, the median hit RT for AD patients increased disproportionately with increasing array size, indicating an additional cognitive impairment on this task. Of particular importance, the cognitive deficit observed in conjunction search was more profound than that predicted on the basis of previous reports of global cognitive slowing in AD. There was some evidence that the performance of AD patients improved more than the performance of controls over the duration of the experimental test session. Patients also had more difficulty in detecting targets on the right side of hemispace and in more peripheral locations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The disaccharide alpha-Kdo-(2-->8)-alpha-Kdo (Kdo: 3-deoxy-D-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid) represents a genus-specific epitope of the lipopolysaccharide of the obligate intracellular human pathogen Chlamydia. The conformation of the synthetically derived disaccharide alpha-Kdo-(2-->8)-alpha-Kdo-(2-->O)-allyl was studied in aqueous solution, and complexed to a monoclonal antibody S25-2. Various NMR experiments based on the detection of NOEs (or transfer NOEs) and ROEs (or transfer ROEs) were performed. A major problem was the extensive overlap of almost all 1H NMR signals of alpha-Kdo-(2-->8)-alpha-Kdo-(2-->O)-allyl. To overcome this difficulty, HMQC-NOESY and HMQC-trNOESY experiments were employed. Spin diffusion effects were identified using trROESY experiments, QUIET-trNOESY experiments and MINSY experiments. It was found that protein protons contribute to the observed spin diffusion effects. At 800 MHz, intermolecular trNOEs were observed between ligand protons and aromatic protons in the antibody binding site. From NMR experiments and Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, it was concluded that alpha-Kdo-(2-->8)-alpha-Kdo-(2-->O)-allyl in aqueous solution exists as a complex conformational mixture. Upon binding to the monoclonal antibody S25-2, only a limited range of conformations is available to alpha-Kdo-(2-->8)-alpha-Kdo-(2-->O)-allyl. These possible bound conformations were derived from a distance geometry analysis using transfer NOEs as experimental constraints. It is clear that a conformation is selected which lies within a part of the conformational space that is highly populated in solution. This conformational space also includes the conformation found in the crystal structure. Our results provide a basis for modeling studies of the antibody-disaccharide complex.  相似文献

Although clinical evidence of spatial attention deficits, such as neglect and extinction, is typically associated with lesions of the right temporal-parietal junction, recent evidence has suggested an important role for the superior parietal lobe. Two groups of patients, selected for lesions at the temporal-parietal junction including the superior temporal gyrus (TPJ group), or for lesions involving the parietal but not the superior temporal region (PAR group), performed cued-target detection tasks in 2 experiments. An extinction-like response time pattern was found for the TPJ but not the PAR group. In addition, both groups were able to use expectancy information, in the form of cue predictiveness, suggesting that separate mechanisms mediate exogenous and endogenous processes during attention shifts. Objective: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has emerged as a classification for a prodromal phase of cognitive decline that may precede the emergence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent research suggests that attention, executive, and working memory deficits may appear much earlier in the progression of AD than traditionally conceptualized, and may be more consistently associated with the later development of AD than memory processing deficits. The present study longitudinally tracked attention, executive and working memory functions in subtypes of MCI. Method: In a longitudinal study, 52 amnestic MCI (a-MCI), 29 nonamnestic MCI (na-MCI), and 25 age- and education-matched controls undertook neuropsychological assessment of visual and verbal memory, attentional processing, executive functioning, working memory capacity, and semantic language at 10 month intervals. Results: Analysis by repeated measures ANOVA indicate that the a-MCI and na-MCI groups displayed a decline in simple sustained attention (ηp2 = .054) with a significant decline on a task of divided attention (ηp2 = .053) being evident in the a-MCI group. Stable deficits were found on other measures of attention, working memory and executive function in the a-MCI and na-MCI groups. The a-MCI group displayed stable impairments to visual and verbal memory. Conclusions: The results indicate that a-MCI and na-MCI display a stable pattern of deficits to attention, working memory, and executive function. The decline in simple sustained attention in a-MCI and n-MCI groups and to divided attention in a-MCI may be early indicators of possible transition to dementia from MCI. However, further research is required to determine this. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Following a distributed network model of visuospatial attention, the authors used an A-X version of the Continuous Performance Test and a covert orienting paradigm to examine the vigilance, anterior, and posterior attention systems. Compared with control participants without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), children with the predominantly inattentive (ADHD-I) and combined (ADHD-C) subtypes had lower sensitivity (d') to detect targets from nontargets. Children with ADHD-C, but not ADHD-I, additionally had a highly activated response style (lnβ). Performance for both subtypes decreased to a greater extent over time in a manner consistent with problems in sustained attention. Together, these results suggest the presence of vigilance system deficits in participants with both ADHD subtypes. However, consistent with previous meta-analytic work, there was no evidence for anterior or posterior system orienting dysfunctions in either subtype. The Stroop task, considered by many to be a paradigmatic measure of selective attention, has often been employed to investigate attention deficits in schizophrenia. Card and single-trial versions of this task have yielded different results. In this study both card and single-trial versions were administered to healthy controls (n?=?24) and patients with schizophrenia (n?=?55). No differences in reaction time (RT) interference were found on either version. On the single-trial version, patients showed greater RT facilitation and error rate interference, evidence for a deficit in selective attention. Methodologic and analytic issues that account for the mixed results from earlier card Stroop studies are addressed. It is concluded that single-trial versions provide greater sensitivity to selective attention pathology in schizophrenia. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Healthy aging is often accompanied by episodic memory decline. Prior studies have consistently demonstrated that older adults show disproportionate deficits in relational memory (RM) relative to item memory (IM). Despite rich evidence of an age-related RM deficit, the source of this deficit remains unspecified. One of the most widely investigated factors of age-related RM impairment is a reduction in attentional resources. However, no prior studies have demonstrated that reduced attentional resources are the critical source of age-related RM deficits. Here, we used qualitatively different attention tasks and tested whether reduced attention for relational processing underlies the RM deficit observed in aging. In Experiment 1, we imposed either item-detection or relation-detection attention tasks on young adults during episodic memory encoding and found that only the concurrent attention task that involves relational processing disproportionately impaired RM performance in young adults. Moreover, by ruling out the possible confound of task difficulty on the disproportionate RM impairment, we further demonstrated that reduced relational attention is a key factor for the age-related RM deficit. In Experiment 2, we replicated the results from Experiment 1 by using different materials of stimuli and found that the effect of relational attention on RM is material general. The results of Experiment 2 also showed that reducing attentional resources for relational processing in young adults strikingly equated their RM performance to that of older adults. Thus, this study documents the first evidence that reduced attentional resources for relational processing are a critical factor for the relational memory impairment observed in aging. C. Jarrold, W. Butler, E. M. Cottington, and F. Jiminez (2000) proposed that weak central coherence is a primary cognitive deficit in autism and speculated that it may even account for theory of mind impairments. The current study investigated whether weak central coherence could account for deficits in 2 behaviors purported to tap capabilities fundamental to a theory of mind: joint attention and pretend play. Twenty-one children (ages 3-5 years) with autism spectrum disorders were matched to 21 control children on chronological age, nonverbal ability, and gender. Pretend play did not differentiate the groups. Weak central coherence, poor joint attention, and low verbal ability contributed significantly and independently to the prediction of autism group membership, a finding consistent with 3 independent cognitive deficits underlying autism. Age-related declines in attention and cognition have been associated with a difficulty in inhibiting the processing of task-irrelevant information (i.e., the inhibitory deficit hypothesis). However, evidence supporting the inhibitory deficit hypothesis remains equivocal, in part because of complexities in examining the processing of irrelevant stimuli using purely behavioral techniques. The effects of age on the processing of task-irrelevant stimuli were examined using scalp-recorded event-related brain potentials. Participants performed a visual discrimination task while standard and deviant auditory stimuli were presented in the background. Deviant auditory stimuli generated a mismatch negativity (MMN) wave that decreased with age, in part because of an age-related enhancement in sensory-evoked responses. The age-related changes in processing task-irrelevant auditory stimuli are consistent with the inhibitory deficit hypothesis and suggest that impaired inhibitory control of sensory input may play a role in the age-related declines in performance during selective attention tasks.
