Synergism in mixed micelle formation and surface tension reduction efficiency and the ternary phase behavior of anionic surfactant (alcohol polyoxyethylene ether acetate containing 10 ethylene oxide group and a fatty chain of C16–18) with cationic surfactants (dodecyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride and lauryltrimethyl ammonium chloride) were investigated. Surface tension of the systems at different molar ratios was studied in detail and the interaction parameters of each system were calculated. The results show that both systems have lower values of critical micelle concentration (CMC) and γcmc than individual surfactants especially at equal ratio between cationic and anionic surfactants. Both systems present synergism in mixed micelle formation and surface tension reduction efficiency. The ternary phase behavior of the two systems was investigated using a polarized microscope. The micellar phase and lamellar phase were observed in both systems and the coexisting phase was only observed in the dodecyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride system.  相似文献

The surfactant structure–performance relationship and application properties in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) for binary mixtures of anionic and cationic surfactants are presented and discussed. A polyoxyethylene ether carboxylate anionic surfactant was blended with a quaternary ammonium chloride cationic surfactant and tested for a high-temperature, low-salinity, and high-hardness condition as found in an oil reservoir. These mixtures were tailored by phase behavior tests to form optimal microemulsions with normal octane (n-C8) and crude oil having an API gravity of 48.05°. The ethoxy number of the polyoxyethylene carboxylate anionic surfactant and the chain length of the cationic surfactant were tuned to find an optimal surfactant blend. Interfacial tensions with n-C8 and with crude oil were measured. Synergism between anionic and cationic surfactants was indicated by surface tension measurement, CMC determination, calculation of surface excess concentrations and area per molecule of individual surfactants and their mixtures. Molecular interactions of anionic and cationic surfactants in mixed monolayers and aggregates were calculated by using regular solution theory to find molecular interaction parameters β σ and β M . Morphologies of surfactant solutions were studied by cryogenic TEM. The use of binary mixtures of anionic/cationic surfactants significantly broadens the scope of application for conventional chemical EOR methods.  相似文献

The influence of CnTAB cationic surfactant chain length (n = 8, 10, and 12) on the reaction rate of zinc powder and 0.1 M HCl hydrochloric acid in aqueous solutions was determined at room temperature. Solutions of single surfactants consisting of dodecyl, decyl, and octyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide surfactants CnTAB were prepared at room temperature. From the surface tension and conductivity measurements, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of the three surfactants were obtained in the presence and absence of the acid. No significant change was observed for CMC values in pure water and in 0.01 M HCl. Adsorption of CnTAB surfactants onto 1% wt./vol zinc (in powder form), using surface tension measurements, was then investigated. The adsorption tendency of CnTAB surfactants onto zinc powder followed the order: C8TAB > C10TAB > C12TAB. The role of surfactants in the reaction rate between zinc powder and 0.1 M M HCl was then investigated using conductivity measurements. A significant difference in the reaction rate was found depending on the surfactant chain length. Reaction times of 3830, 4963, 14,172, and 20,053 s were found for the zinc reaction with (0.1 M HCl), (0.1 M HCl + 40 mM C8TAB), (0.1 M HCl + 40 mM C10TAB), and (0.1 M HCl + 40 mM C12TAB), respectively, suggesting a significant dependency of the reaction rate on the CnTAB chain length. Finally, some corrosion parameters such as the corrosion rate, corrosion inhibition efficiency, and their dependency on CnTAB chain length were presented and discussed.  相似文献

In the present study, the interaction of an anionic azo dye, Sunset Yellow, with two cationic gemini surfactants with different spacer lengths (s = 3, 6 methylene groups) and their monomeric counterpart, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), was investigated by surface tension, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurements. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was determined from plots of the surface tension (γ) as a function of the logarithm of total surfactant concentration. Moreover, the values of binding constants (Kb) of dye-surfactant complexes were calculated by UV–Vis spectroscopy. The UV–Vis spectra showed that the dye–surfactant interaction occurred in the solution at concentrations far below the CMC of each surfactant. The gemini surfactant with a shorter spacer showed stronger interaction with dye in comparison to DTAB and the gemini with longer spacer. The effect of surfactant chemical structure on solubilization of dye-surfactant aggregates at surfactant concentration above CMC was investigated by zeta potential.  相似文献

The chemical structure of the prepared cationic surfactants which formed through condensation reaction between dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) and butyraldehyde then quaternized by three fatty alkyl bromide was confirmed by FTIR, 1HNMR and mass spectroscopy. The chemical structure of prepared compounds has an effect on surface properties. By increasing the hydrophobic chain length, the values of CMC and Гmax decrease while Amin value was increased. The Thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption and micellization processes are spontaneous. It is clear that the prepared cationic surfactants tend to adsorb at surface, then it aggregate to form micelle. The prepared surfactants showed good biological activity against Gram-positive and negative bacteria and fungi. The prepared cationic surfactant showed aggressive effect on the sulfate reducing bacteria growth.  相似文献

A homologue series of sodium secondary n-alkanesulfonates (C14, C16 and C18) were obtained by photosulfochlorination process with two different reaction conditions. Different length chains with different isomeric distributions of n-alkanesulfonates are expected to present variations in physicochemical properties. In this investigation, the relationships between their isomeric distribution and their chain length and micellar behaviors were thoroughly explored. Their CMC at different temperatures were determined using specific conductivity and surface tension measurements. Through surface tension isotherms, the surface activities (??CMC) were obtained. The surface absorption amounts (??max) and the molecular areas (A min) were calculated using Gibb??s equation. As expected, these surfactants exhibit good surface properties. It was shown that the CMC values increase with increasing the percentage of secondary isomers, with a surface tension decrease. It was also shown that the CMC values decrease with increasing chain length. The HLB values were calculated for each surfactant and the results obtained suggest that they are O/W emulsifiers. The foam properties of synthesized surfactants were evaluated and compared to those obtained for commercial samples. It was shown that the foamability is influenced both by the length of the hydrophobic moiety and the percentage of secondary isomers. It can be easily concluded that the C14 sulfonates show the best foaming properties independently of their isomeric distribution. The Krafft point values obtained indicate that the micellization and the surfactant solubility mainly depend on the proportion of secondary isomers and the length of hydrophobic moiety.  相似文献

In this study, the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants was determined using the UV–Vis spectroscopic method. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) as anionic, hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide as cationic, tert-octylphenol ethoxylates TOPEON (with N = 9.5, 7.5 and 35) and lauryl alcohol ethoxylate (23EO) as nonionic surfactants have been used. Concentration of surfactants varies both from below and above the CMC value in the pyrene solution. In addition, the amount of the CMC was determined using the values from the data obtained from the graph of absorbance versus concentration of surfactants. A comparative study was conducted between the results of the present study and the literature which shows a good agreement, in particular for TOPEO9.5 and LAEO23. Furthermore, the CMC value of SDS (as an ionic surfactant) in the presence of nonionic surfactants was also examined. The result reveals that with addition of small amount of nonionic surfactant to the anionic SDS surfactant, a decline in the CMC value of the anionic–nonionic system relative to the CMC of pure anionic surfactant was observed. In addition and for the first time, the effect of UV irradiation on the size of the micelle formations was studied. It was found that UV irradiation causes the formation of smaller micelles which is of prime concern in membrane technology.  相似文献

A series of carboxylate gemini surfactants, which contain two hydrocarbon chains linked by amide groups, two carboxylate groups, a flexible alkane spacer were synthesized by three-step reactions and named alkylidene–bis-(N,N′-dodecyl-carboxypropylamides) (2C12H25CnAm; n = 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 is the number of methylene groups of the spacer), their structures were confirmed by FTIR,1H NMR, and LC–MS/TOF, and their purity checked by HPLC. The micellar properties with increasing spacer chain length of these gemini surfactants were determined by surface tension methods. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) varies slightly with spacer chain length; surface tension at CMC(γCMC), the tendency of micellization versus adsorption, CMC/C20, the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/solution interface (ACMC), all decrease with increasing spacer chain length; surface reduction efficiency, pC20, the surface excess at the air/solution interface (ГCMC) increase with increasing spacer chain length. The results probably indicate that increasing spacer chain length of these carboxylate gemini surfactants will increase spacer incorporation into the double hydrophobic chain.  相似文献

This research evaluates the adsorption of anionic and cationic surfactant mixtures on charged metal oxide surfaces (i.e., alumina and silica). For an anionic-rich surfactant mixture below the CMC, the adsorption of anionic surfactant was found to substantially increase with the addition of low mole fractions of cationic surfactant. Two anionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium dihexyl sulfosuccinate) and two cationic surfactants (dodecyl pyridinium chloride and benzethonium chloride) were studied to evaluate the effect of surfactant tail branching. While cationic surfactants were observed to co-adsorb with anionic surfactants onto positively charged surfaces, the plateau level of anionic surfactant adsorption (i.e., at or above the CMC) did not change significantly for anionic–cationic surfactant mixtures. At the same time, the adsorption of anionic surfactants onto alumina was dramatically reduced when present in cationic-rich micelles and the adsorption of cationic surfactants on silica was substantially reduced in the presence of anionic-rich micelles. This demonstrates that mixed micelle formation can effectively reduce the activity of the highly adsorbing surfactant and thus inhibit the adsorption of the surfactant, especially when the highly adsorbing surfactant is present at a low mole fraction in the mixed surfactant system. Thus surfactant adsorption can be either enhanced or inhibited using mixed anionic–cationic surfactant systems by varying the concentration and composition.

Mixed micellization study of cationic surfactants viz. alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (CnTAB) and alkyltriphenylphosphonium bromides (CnTPPB) with similar hydrophobic groups (C12-, C14-, and C16-) was performed using tensiometry and UV–visible light spectrophotometry techniques. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of the single and binary surfactant mixtures were obtained from a plot of surface tension versus the logarithm of surfactant concentration (C s). The degree of synergy and various mixed micelle parameters like interaction parameter (β), activity coefficients (f m ) and interfacial parameters like surface pressure (π CMC), packing parameter (P), surface excess concentration (Г max), surface tension at the CMC (γ CMC), and minimum area per molecule (A min) were evaluated using the regular solution theory (RST). Thermodynamic parameters were calculated using several proposed models which suggest the mixed micellar system to be more thermodynamically stable than their respective individual components. In addition, a dye solubilization study was performed using a spectrophotometric method to validate the CMC data obtained from tensiometric method. Conductometric measurements were also carried out for the mixture of C12TAB + C12TPPB only as it showed a more negative β, indicating a higher degree of synergism.  相似文献

Two new classes of gemini cationic surfactants—hexanediyl-1,6-bis[(isopropylol) alkylammonium] dibromide {in the abbreviation form: CnC6Cn[iPr-OH] and CnC6Cn[iPr-OH]2; alkyl: CnH2n + 1 with n = 9, 10, 12 and 14}—have been synthesized by interaction of alkyl bromides with N,N′-di-(isopropylol)-1,6-diaminohexane and N,N,N′,N′-tetra-(isopropylol)-1,6-diaminohexane. The surface tension, electrical conductivity, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques were used to investigate the aggregation properties of the gemini cationic surfactants in aqueous solution. The formation of critical aggregates at two concentrations in an aqueous solution from obtained gemini cationic surfactants were determined via the tensiometric method. Thus, these gemini cationic surfactants start to form aggregates at concentrations well below their critical micelle concentrations (CMC). The surface properties and the binding degree (β) of the opposite ion were tested against the length of the surfactant hydrocarbon chain and the number of the isopropylol groups in the head group. By applying the DLS technique, it was explored that how the number of isopropylol groups in gemini cationic surfactants with C12H25 chain affects the sizes of micelles at concentrations greater than CMC. It was discovered that the obtained gemini cationic surfactants have a biocidal character.  相似文献

Surfactant-modified mineral surfaces can provide both a hydrophobic coating for adsorbing organic contaminants and, in the case of ionic surfactants, a charged exterior for adsorbing oppositely charged species. This research evaluates the precipitation phase boundaries and synergistic behavior of the mixtures of carboxylate-based anionic extended surfactants with a pyridinium-based cationic surfactant. One cationic surfactant (cetylpyridinium chloride) and four anionic extended surfactants were studied. The anionic surfactants studied were ethoxy carboxylate extended surfactants with average carbon chain lengths of either 16 and 17 or 16 and 18 with 4 mol of a propylene oxide group and a different number of moles of an ethylene oxide group (2 and 5 mol). Precipitation phase boundaries of mixed anionic extended surfactants and cationic surfactant were evaluated to ensure that the surface tension studies are in regions without precipitate. Surface tension measurements were conducted to evaluate the critical micelle concentration of individual and mixed surfactant systems. Precipitation phase boundaries of these novel mixed surfactant systems showed greatly reduced precipitation areas as compared to a conventional mixed surfactant system which is attributed to the presence of the ethylene oxide and propylene oxide groups and resulting steric hindrances to precipitation. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the CMC of mixed surfactant systems were much lower than that of individual surfactant systems. Synergism was evaluated in the four systems studied by the β parameter which found that all systems studied exhibited synergism. From these results, these novel mixed surfactant systems can greatly increase formulation space (reduce the precipitation region) while maintaining synergism, although slightly reduced from conventional anionic-cationic mixtures reported previously.  相似文献

The solubilization and interaction of an azo-dye (methyl orange) with dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and cationic gemini surfactants in the series of alkanediyl α,ω-bis[(dimethyl alkyl ammonium)bromide)] referred to as (m-s-m), m = 10, 12, 14 and s = 2, 3, 4 were investigated by means of UV–Vis spectroscopy. Aggregation with the anionic dye was reflected by a hypsochromic shift with a decrease in the intensity of the absorption band. The results also show a bathochromic shift followed by a sharp increase in the intensity of the maximum absorption band λmax after the critical micellar concentration (CMC). This indicates that the dye solubility increased with increasing surfactant concentration. It was also observed that the aggregation of surfactant and dye takes place at a surfactant concentration far below the CMC of the individual surfactant. The effects of the chain length as well as the spacer length of gemini surfactants on the critical aggregation concentration and CMC were also examined. Moreover, the partition coefficients between the bulk water and surfactant micelles K S and K X as well as the Gibbs energies of distribution of dye between the bulk water and surfactant micelles were determined using the pseudo-phase model. The effect of the hydrophobic chain length and spacer of gemini surfactants on the distribution parameters is also reported.  相似文献

A homologous series of new gemini cationic surfactants were synthesized and characterized using micro elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H-NMR and mass spectra. The surface activities of these amphiphiles were determined based on the data of surface tension. Critical micelle concentration, effectiveness of the surface tension reduction, efficiency of adsorption, maximum surface excess, minimum surface area and critical packing parameter were evaluated. The effect of cationic micelles on solubilization of anionic azo dye, sulforhodamine B (Acid Red 52) in aqueous micellar solution of the synthesized gemini cationic surfactants was studied at pH 6.9 ± 0.5 and 25 °C. The results showed that the solubility of dye rose with increasing surfactant concentration as a consequence of some association between the dye and the micelles. It was also observed that the aggregation of surfactant and dye takes place at a surfactant concentration below the CMC of the individual surfactant. The partition coefficients between the bulk water and surfactant micelles as well as the Gibbs energies of distribution of dye between the bulk water and surfactant micelles were calculated using a pseudo-phase model. The effect of the hydrophobic chain length of Gemini cationic surfactants on the distribution parameters was also reported. The results show favorable solubilization of dye in cationic micelles.  相似文献

Micellar and interfacial properties of mixed surfactant systems comprising benzalkonium chloride, a cationic surfactant and nonionic polyoxyethylene alkyl ether surfactants (POE: C10E7, C10E8, C10E9, C10E10) have been investigated by surface tension, fluorescence and dynamic light scattering techniques. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) for different mixing mole fractions has been investigated by surface tension and fluorescence measurements. Ideal CMC, mixed micellar composition (X 1 m , X 1 σ ), interaction parameters for mixed micelles (β m) and adsorption monolayer (β σ ), surface excess concentration (Гmax), minimum area per molecule (A min) and related thermodynamic properties have also been determined. Lowering of the CMC and negative interaction parameter values indicate synergism in the mixed micelle and monolayer formed, whereas, thermodynamic parameters evaluated for the proposed mixed systems indicate stability of the resulting micelles and monolayer. Micellar aggregation number (N agg) and hydrodynamic diameter (D h) computed from fluorescence and dynamic light scattering measurements respectively illustrate micellar growth in the mixed state. Results obtained for the proposed mixed systems can be helpful in designing smart materials for industrial surfactant based formulations.  相似文献

A series of cationic gemini surfactants containing different spacer length were synthesized and analyzed structurally. It was shown that the surface tension (σ) and critical micelle concentration (CMC), which had a maximum for the n-C4H8 spacer depended on the spacer length. The foaming ability and foam stability are high for the gemini surfactants with short spacers (C2H4 to n-C4H8), while longer spacers lead to a distinct decrease of these foam parameters. Foaming properties are discussed in terms of configuration and conformation of a surfactant molecule and in relation to micellization state kinetic.  相似文献

Anionic and cationic surfactant mixtures exhibit desirable synergism, but are limited by their tendency to form precipitates. This research evaluates the adsorption, adsolubilization and desorption of mixtures of carboxylate-based anionic extended surfactants and a pyridinium-based cationic surfactant. The mixture of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), selected as the cationic surfactant, with four anionic extended surfactants were studied. The anionic surfactants studied were alkyl propoxylated ethoxylated carboxylate with average number of carbon chain length of 16 and 17 or 16 and 18 with 4?mol of propylene oxide groups and either 2 or 5?mol of ethylene oxide groups. The adsorption of anionic extended and cationic surfactant mixtures onto a negatively charged metal oxide surface (silica dioxide) was evaluated. The adsolubilization of phenylethanol, styrene and ethylcyclohexane were evaluated for these mixed surfactant systems. The desorption potential of individual and mixed surfactant systems was also evaluated by varying the number of washing (desorption) steps. It was found that the plateau adsorption of mixed anionic extended surfactant and cationic surfactant occurred at lower surfactant concentration than that of the CPC alone, although the maximum adsorption capacity of CPC was not enhanced in our mixed surfactant systems. Adsolubilization capacities of these mixed surfactant systems are higher than that of the individual surfactant system. For desorption studies, these mixed surfactant systems showed lower stability than the individual surfactant system.  相似文献

Three anionic surfactants of the monododecyl diaryl disulfonate type (MDDADS-n, n = 0, 1, 2) were synthesized. The structural characters of MDDADS-n surfactants were verified by electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry. The effect of the spacer group on the surface activity, salinity and hardness tolerance and mimic oil washing efficiency were investigated. The results showed that the critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension at CMC, C20 and the minimum area per molecule of the anionic surfactants increased when the spacer group length increased. There was less effect on mimic oil washing efficiency of MDDADS-n when the spacer group changed; meanwhile, they displayed higher mimic oil washing efficiency in salt solution (NaCl or CaCl2) than that of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS); all MDDADS-n surfactants showed much lower sensitivity to water hardness than SDBS, what would be beneficial to enhancing oil recovery in a high salinity oil field.  相似文献

Synthesis of anionic N-acylated L-amino acids, oligopeptides and protein hydrolysates as protein-based surfactants and their application in wool finishing. As model compounds for protein-fatty acid condensation products, ten L-amino acids were N-acylated with fatty acid chlorides by Schotten-Baumann reaction. Structural variation in the non-polar part of the molecule was achieved by using saturated fatty acids of different chain length (C8–C18). The terminal carboxyl group was modified by reaction with different amino acids. Furthermore, N-octanoyl-, N-dodecanoyl-di, -tripeptides and protein-fatty acid condensation products were synthesized by Schotten-Baumann reaction. A dependence of the surface activity on both molecular weight and amino acid composition of the peptide moiety was found after determination of the surface tension-concentration isotherms: critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactant solutions increase with increasing molecular weight and higher polarity of the peptide part. This coincides with a reduction of surface activity. With increasing alkyl chain length, however, the surface activity increases as can be seen from the decrease in CMC. For the synthesized anionic protein-based surfactants good biodegradabilities (68–78% BOD5/COD) were determined. The sorption characteristics of protein derivatives on wool were studied in wool finishing processes. An increased bath exhaustion and a more intense coloration of wool were obtained during dyeing of wool by addition of N-acyl-L-amino acids or commercially available protein-fatty acid condensates.  相似文献

A series of anionic gemini surfactants with the same structure except the spacer nature have been studied. Their solution properties were characterized by the equilibrium surface tension and intrinsic fluorescence quenching method. The critical micelle concentrations (CMC), surface tension at cmc, C20, and the micelle aggregation number (N) were obtained. The surface tension measurements indicate that these gemini surfactants have much lower cmc values and great efficiency in lowering the surface tension of water compared with those of conventional monomeric surfactants. Furthermore, the standard free energy of micellization for anionic gemini surfactants was also determined. The results showed that the nature of the spacer has an important effect on the aggregation properties of gemini surfactants in aqueous solutions. The surfactant with a hydrophilic, flexible spacer was more readily able to form micelle compared with the surfactant with a hydrophobic, rigid spacer, which leads to a lower CMC value, larger N, more negative free energy of micellization, and a more closely packed micelle structure.  相似文献
