In the current study, research was conducted in five cities in China to examine seatbelt use and to explore Chinese drivers’ attitudes toward using seatbelts. Multiple data collection methods consisted of 35 initial semi-structured interviews to create questions for an in-person survey and 500 driver observations that included administering the in-person survey. Questions explored were why Chinese drivers use or do not use seatbelts and what they think would be the best interventions to increase the rate of seatbelt use in Chinese drivers. The relationships between various personal characteristics and seatbelt use rates were investigated. Also examined were the relationships between seatbelt use (both objective observation and subjective self-reported use) and self-reported car crashes and traffic violations. This study provides insight into the attitudes of Chinese drivers on seatbelt use and potential interventions.  相似文献

The validity of self-reported seatbelt use among low belt use populations has not been evaluated directly, despite the importance of such data for estimating the effectiveness of community-wide interventions and compliance with state laws. To address this gap in knowledge 612 drivers were recruited from convenience stores located in 12 randomly generated zip code areas located in El Paso, TX. Self-reported seatbelt use was compared with observed seatbelt use in a single sample of participants. Both data sets were collected almost contemporaneously and no participant was aware of having their seatbelt use observed. Hispanic (n = 388) and white/non-Hispanic (n = 126) drivers over reported seatbelt use by 27 and 21%, respectively. These findings suggest that response bias within low belt use populations may be greater than suggested by state and national data.  相似文献

The validity of self-reported seatbelt use among low belt use populations in low belt use countries has not been evaluated directly. Nine hundred and ninety drivers were recruited from shopping centers, car parks, and other suitable locations located in Afyon and Ankara cities of Turkey in order to compare the self-reported and observed seatbelt usage rates. Data sets were collected simultaneously from the participants not being aware of having their seatbelt use observed. Participants interviewed in Afyon (n = 301) and Ankara (n = 658) reported seatbelt usage (“always using a seatbelt”) rates of 39% and 45%, respectively. When observed, however, only 47% in Afyon and 70% in Ankara of these drivers actually fasten their seat-belts. It seems that the drivers in both cities exaggerated their use seat belts considerably.  相似文献

Road traffic accidents in Greece are one of the major problems of the public health sector and the first cause of death in the ages 18–24. However, there are no records available for defining the determinants of road accidents and seatbelt wearing rates. The main objective of this study is to determine and clarify the relationship between young drivers’ intentions (motivation to use/non use seatbelt) and their behaviour (self-reported use). Additionally, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the seatbelt wearing rates among young drivers in relation to their trip-type. The sample consisted of 200 young Greek drivers of both sexes. The statistical analysis included factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The seatbelt use was measured in relation with seven trip-types. Through factor analysis, a seven factor scale of seatbelt use and a four factor scale of seatbelt non use were created which included Greek young drivers’ basic motivations for wearing or not wearing a seatbelt. A model, constructed by the multiple regression analysis, revealed the factors related with the seatbelt use. The factors positively related were ‘imitation’, ‘self-protection’, and ‘legality’. The factor of ‘discomfort’ is negatively associated with the seatbelt use. Furthermore, mileage was negatively related with seatbelt use. Finally, some preliminary suggestions on how prevention strategies should be implemented in Greece are discussed.  相似文献

This study determined demographic factors associated with reported seatbelt use among injured adults admitted to a trauma center. A retrospective chart review was conducted including all patients admitted to a trauma center for injuries from motor vehicle crashes (MVC). E-codes (i.e. ICD-9 external cause of injury codes) were used to identify all patients injured in a MVC between January 1995 and December 1997. Age, sex, race, residence zip code (i.e. a proxy for income based on geographic location of residence), position in the vehicle, and seatbelt use were obtained from the trauma registry. Forward logistic regression was used to identify significant predictors of seatbelt use. Complete data was available for 1366 (82%) patients. Seatbelt use was reported for 45% of patients under age of 25 years, 52% of those 25-60 years, and 68% of those over 60 years. Overall, seatbelt use was reported for 45% of men and 63% of women, as well as for 56% of Caucasians (i.e. Whites) and 34% of African Americans. In addition, seatbelt use was reported for 33% of those earning less than $20,000 per year and 55% of those earning over $20,000. Finally, seatbelt use was reported for 57% of drivers and 43% of passengers. Logistic regression revealed that age, female gender, Caucasian race, natural log of income, and driver were all significant predictors of reported seatbelt use. These results show that seatbelt use was more likely to be reported for older persons, women, Caucasians, individuals with greater incomes, and drivers. Seatbelt use should be encouraged for everyone; however, young people, men, African Americans, individuals with lower incomes, and passengers should be targeted specifically.  相似文献

Perceived driving safety and seatbelt usage   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:2
Swedish and U.S. subjects judged their own driving skills and safety in relation to other drivers. As in earlier studies, most subjects showed an optimism bias: a tendency to judge oneself as safer and more skillful than the average driver, with a smaller risk of getting involved and injured in an accident. Different measures of the optimism effect were strongly correlated with one another, with driving experience and with the judged importance of human factors (as opposed to technical and chance factors) in causing accidents. Degree of optimism was positively, but weakly, correlated with reported seatbelt usage and worry about traffic accidents. Seatbelt usage was positively related to the extent to which belts are judged to be convenient and popular, and more modestly related to the belt's perceived contributions to safety. These results suggest that providing more information about the effectiveness of seatbelts may not be as efficient a way of increasing seatbelt usage as emphasizing other factors, such as comfort and social norms, which cannot be outweighed by optimism.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: American Indians (AI's) have the lowest rate of seatbelt use in the nation, putting them at significant risk for motor vehicle crash (MVC) morbidity and mortality. This study compares seatbelt use in victims of level one trauma crashes presenting from on and off AI reservations. Predictors of seatbelt use were evaluated as well. We hypothesized that AI's in crashes on a reservation would have lower rates of seatbelt use, even compared to AI's in crashes from off the reservation. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of consecutive MVC victims presenting to a level one trauma facility in Phoenix, Arizona from July 2003 to June 2005. Inclusion criteria were age >11 and transported directly from the crash; struck pedestrians were excluded. Inter-facility transports were also excluded, as these patients would likely represent a sicker population, possibly introducing bias. Characteristics of those patients (sex, race, location of crash, alcohol and seatbelt use) were analyzed in univariate and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Data were collected on 2339 patients. Three hundred ninety-two were excluded, leaving 1947 (83%) available for analysis. AI's had lower rates of seatbelt use compared to all other races. Additionally, AI's on a reservation were less likely to wear seatbelts than those off a reservation (25.9% versus 42.7%). However, when tested in a multivariate analysis with alcohol as a covariate, race and location became insignificant. Low seatbelt use by AI's on the reservation was primarily associated with alcohol use. CONCLUSION: In this analysis, alcohol, rather than race or location, is the overriding predictor of seatbelt use. This study compared patients that were in crashes, and only those triaged to a level one trauma facility. If we assume unbelted passengers are more severely injured, this would bias our results. The application of these data may help direct future public service efforts to increase seatbelt use in target populations.  相似文献

Since 2005, all fatal road traffic crashes in Norway have been analyzed in-depth by multidisciplinary investigation teams organized by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA). During the period 2005–2010, 608 drivers of cars or vans were killed in road traffic crashes. Blood samples were collected from 372 (61%) of the drivers and analyzed for alcohol and a large number of psychoactive drugs at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH). After coupling the analytical results with the NPRA crash database, 369 drivers with a fatal outcome were identified and included. Alcohol or drug concentrations in blood above the legal limits were found in 39.8% of the drivers who were investigated for alcohol or drug impairment; 33.9% had blood alcohol concentrations above 0.5 g/L or concentrations of drugs above the equivalent Norwegian legal impairment limits or concentrations of amphetamines above 200 μg/L. Among drivers with a fatal outcome who had been impaired by alcohol or drugs, 64.6% were unbelted and 71.7% were speeding when the crash occurred; whereas 24.2% and 33.2% of the sober drivers were unbelted or speeding, respectively. Statistically significant associations were found between impairment by alcohol or amphetamines and driving unbelted or speeding. Excessive speeding is one of the main reasons for road traffic crashes and together with being unbelted the main reasons for a fatal outcome. This behavior might in many cases be due to increased risk-taking or negligence of safety measures as a result of alcohol or drug use.  相似文献

Observed seatbelt usage among drivers of heavy commercial vehicles in Utah   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
National seatbelt observation surveys indicate commercial vehicle drivers' seatbelt usage is lower than passenger vehicle drivers. Seatbelts are effective at preventing injuries and death following motor vehicle crashes and an important component in decreasing morbidity and mortality related to commercial vehicle crashes. We conducted an observation survey of heavy commercial vehicle drivers' seatbelt usage to gather baseline data and to aid in planning prevention programs. We found that the observed heavy commercial vehicle drivers had a seatbelt usage rate of 64%, approximately 20% lower than the national rate for drivers of passenger vehicles. Our observations demonstrate a need to increase seatbelt usage among heavy commercial vehicle drivers. Specific programs and resources for intervention programs targeting heavy commercial vehicle drivers are warranted.  相似文献

Seatbelt legalisation was implemented in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in January 1999. This provided the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the legislation in the Eastern District of Abu Dhabi Emirate in the UAE by establishing levels of injury severity from motor vehicle crashes (MVC) before and after the legislation and the rate of compliance with the legislation. Data were obtained from a major hospital in the Eastern District of Abu Dhabi Emirate, UAE. Subjects were a systematic sample of MVC victims who arrived alive at hospital in either the pre-implementation period (January-June 1998) or the post-implementation period (February-August 2000). The main measures of outcome were injury severity codes, numbers of hospital bed days and rates of admission and discharge at hospital. The analysis of injury severity from MVCs, from the pre- to the post-implementation period, revealed a significant declining trend (chi-square = 77.68, P < 0.001). While the proportion of minor injuries increased from 42% (95% CI: 36-48%) in the pre-implementation period to 77% (95% CI: 71-83%) in the post-implementation period, the proportion of "moderate to fatal injuries" declined from 54% (95% CI: 48-60%) to 17% (P = 0.001) and the median number of hospital bed days declined from 5 days (25% = 2; 75% = 8 ) to 3 days (25% = 1; 75% = 4 ). The rate of seatbelt compliance reported by occupants involved in MVCs in the post-implementation period was 59% (95% CI: 52-67%). The implementation of the seatbelt legislation in the Eastern District of Abu Dhabi Emirate was associated with statistically significant reduction in morbidity in those arriving alive at hospital following MVC, including reduced severity of injury, admission rate to hospital and the duration of hospital stay. More active implementation of seatbelt law would most likely further reduce severity of MVC injuries and fatalities in the Eastern District of Abu Dhabi Emirate, UAE.  相似文献

Metal-semiconductor-metal planar structures were fabricated on free-standing diamond films. The devices were found to operate successfully as photodetectors for deep ultraviolet light with their response being dependent on the post-growth treatment. However, evidences of trapping were found both in the spectral photoresponse and temporal response to monochromatic light transients.  相似文献

In this paper, we construct a new kind of confidence intervals for the parameters of interest through constructing confidence distributions for them in one-way random effects model. At first, we use the method of Singh et al. (Ann Stat 33:159–183, 2005) to derive combined asymptotic confidence distribution, then obtain the confidence interval naturally by the property of confidence distribution. Simulation results demonstrate that the new confidence intervals perform very well in terms of empirical coverage probability and average interval length. Although we focus on confidence interval estimation, our method can also be used to carry out hypothesis tests about the parameters of interest.  相似文献

This paper considers nonparametric estimation of lifetime distribution of a product under ramp stress accelerated life tests in which the stress on an item increases linearly with time and observations are randomly censored. Assuming that a cumulative exposure model holds, the lifetime distribution of an item under ramp stress is derived. Three nonparametric estimators of the lifetime distribution at use condition stress are obtained for the situation where the time transformation function relating stress to lifetime distributions of a test item is a version of the inverse power law. The proposed estimators are robust to underlying lifetime distribution and are computed in closed form. They are compared with maximum likelihood estimator for small samples under exponential lifetime distribution. The method is extended to the case of competing risks.  相似文献

Inferring biological processes from population dynamics is a common challenge in ecology, particularly when faced with incomplete data. This challenge extends to inferring parasite traits from within-host infection dynamics. We focus on rodent malaria infections (Plasmodium berghei), a system for which previous work inferred an immune-mediated extension in the length of the parasite development cycle within red blood cells. By developing a system of delay-differential equations to describe within-host infection dynamics and simulating data, we demonstrate the potential to obtain biased estimates of parasite (and host) traits when key biological processes are not considered. Despite generating infection dynamics using a fixed parasite developmental cycle length, we find that known sources of measurement bias in parasite stage and abundance data can affect estimates of parasite developmental duration, with stage misclassification driving inferences about extended cycle length. We discuss alternative protocols and statistical methods that can mitigate such misestimation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to estimate the size of the influence of ambient light level on fatal pedestrian and vehicle crashes in three scenarios. The scenarios were: fatal pedestrian crashes at intersections, fatal pedestrian crashes on dark rural roads, and fatal single-vehicle run-off-road crashes on dark, curved roads. Each scenario's sensitivity to light level was evaluated by comparing the number of fatal crashes across changes to and from daylight saving time, within daily time periods in which an abrupt change in light level occurs relative to official clock time. The analyses included 11 years of fatal crashes in the United States, between 1987 and 1997. Scenarios involving pedestrians were most sensitive to light level, in some cases showing up to seven times more risk at night over daytime. In contrast, single-vehicle run-off-road crashes showed little difference between light and dark time periods, suggesting factors other than light level play the dominant role in these crashes. These results are discussed in the context of the possible safety improvements offered by new developments in adaptive vehicle headlighting.  相似文献
