In this paper, full-rate and complex orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) schemes for multiple antennas are proposed, and turbo code is employed as channel coding to improve the proposed STBC schemes performance further. Compared with full-diversity multiple antennas STBC schemes, the proposed schemes can implement full data rate, partial diversity and a smaller complexity. On the condition of the same system throughput and concatenation of turbo code, the proposed schemes have lower bit error rate (BER) than those low-rate and full-diversity code schemes. This work is supported by China Postdoctoral Science Foundation under grant No. 2005038242 and Chinese Jiangsu Planned Projects for Postdoctoral Research Funds. Space-time coding technique and Multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) technique have received much interest due to their high frequency spectrum efficiency and high data rate transmission. On the basis of analyzing the two technique principle, utilizing the optimized multiband complex wavelet as multi-carrier basis function, we propose an MC-CDMA system based on multiband complex wavelet and space-time coding for downlink and investigate the system bit error rate (BER) performance over Nakagami-m fading channel. The system has much higher spectrum efficiency and data rate due to no need any cyclic prefix (CP) when compared to the conventional MC-CDMA system. Moreover, the application of space-time coding technique improves the ability against fading channel effectively and perfects the downlink performance further. Simulation results show that the proposed multiband complex-wavelet-based MC-CDMA (MBCW-MC-CDMA) system performs better than conventional MC-CDMA system and real wavelet-packet-based MC-CDMA system due to its superior ability against interferences. Especially, the space-time coded MBCW-MC-CDMA system has superior performance, and it outperforms single antenna MBCW-MC-CDMA and conventional MC-CDMA with space-time coding.

We propose the physical-layer (PHY) air interface solutions for downlink and uplink transmissions in broadband high-speed wireless cellular systems. A system based on low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) time-division multiple-accessing (TDMA) (with scheduling) is proposed for downlink transmission; and a system based on orthogonal space-time block coded (STBC) multi-carrier code-division multiple-accessing (MC-CDMA) is proposed for uplink transmission. The proposed scheme can support ∼100 Mbps peak rate over 25 MHz bandwidth downlink channels and ∼30 Mbps sum rate of multiple users over 25 MHz uplink channels. Moreover, the proposed solutions provide excellent performance and reasonable complexity for mobile station and for base station.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems are highly sensitive to carrier frequency errors. In this paper, a new method utilizing pilots to do frequency synchronization in frequency domain is proposed with large estimation range. It needs no such prerequisite assumption that a perfect symbol timing synchronization [IEEE Transactions on Communications 42 (1994) 2908; 45 (1997) 1613] has been done before performing integer carrier frequency synchronization. Also, a new adjusting model for fine carrier frequency is proposed. Simulation and performance analysis show that our overall frequency estimator has high accuracy. A new technique is proposed for range alignment in Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR). The basic idea is to perform range alignment using a maximum kurtosis (fourth-order central moment) criterion. After maximizing the kurtosis of the combined range profile of two adjacent echoes, the amount of range shift between them can be automatically tracked out. The combined range profile is constructed by a max operation, which only reserves the larger elements of the two echoes, and the echoes’ amplitudes are limited before they are combined. This algorithm has been used to process real ISAR data and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Compared with the correlation method and the minimum entropy method, the proposed algorithm obtains much better results in both examples in this paper. Its computation complexity has the same order of magnitude as the minimum entropy method.

Improved LUT Technique for HPA Nonlinear Pre-Distortion in OFDM Systems
In this paper, we focus on the Look-up Table (LUT) technique for the compensation of HPA nonlinear distortion. An improved LUT method is proposed with better performance compared with conventional LUT technique in terms of convergence speeds, BER and total degradation (TD). It can get over 8 dB gain in out-of-band spectrum re-growth suppression and about 0.3 dB BER performance gain than conventional LUT technique with the same iteration times. Also, we propose an actual application of HPA with pre-distorter in OFDM transmitter. Ai Bo was born in Shannxi Province in China on February 7, 1974. He received a BSc. In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems, the zero forcing decision feedback detector (ZF-DFD) is used to recover transmit signals. In this paper, we propose a per-antenna power control (PAPC) scheme based on ZF-DFD for MIMO block-fading channels. The optimal power controlled ZF-DFD can minimize the block error rate (BLER) and maximize the lower bound of the channel’s free distance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region subject to a power constraint. Additionally, the optimal power controlled ZF-DFD can achieve this BLER performance without any ordering operation at the receiver. The performance analysis among the conventional ZF-DFD without feedback, the optimal power controlled ZF-DFD with power feedback, and the ZF-DFD with full channel state information feedback shows that the optimal ZF-DFD achieves a tradeoff between performance and feedback overhead. We compare the bit error rate (BER) and BLER performance of the optimal ZF-DFD with other detectors without power feedback by simulation. In simulations, the execution times required by these detectors are also reported to compare their complexity. It comes straight that the optimal power controlled ZF-DFD proposed in this paper can achieve good performance with small feedback overhead and have low complexity. This paper addresses some essential problems that have to be taken into consideration in implementing the smart antenna base station (SABS) for downlink beamforming. In order to provide proper downlink beamforming as well as uplink beamforming, a pragmatic procedure of automatic calibration is proposed. Through the experimental test, we confirm that the proposed calibration technique has eliminated the problem of the phase differences of the signal path associated with each antenna. Also, in this paper, we first analyze the multipath condition under which the auxiliary pilot becomes indispensable for detecting the data transmitted on the data channel and what happens if the auxiliary pilot is not available. Then, the performance of the downlink beamforming utilizing the auxiliary pilot is analyzed through the computer simulations. Finally, we present a comparison of downlink communications to uplink ones in terms of throughputs available at each of uplink and downlink communications. Pre-equalization Techniques for Downlink and Uplink TDD MC-CDMA Systems
Time division duplex (TDD) multi carrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems have recently been proposed as potential candidates for next generation (4G) technology. In order to mitigate multiple access interference, in this paper we investigate pre-equalization schemes for both downlink and uplink transmissions, the former also in a multiple transmit antenna scenario. In particular, new pre-equalizer techniques are introduced and complexity issues addressed. Numerical results are given to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed schemes with respect to other existing pre-equalizer solutions. Paola Bisaglia was born in Padova, Italy, on August 8, 1971. Blind modulation classification has been applied in adaptive transmission, non-cooperative communications, and interference identification. This paper propose a novel hierarchical classifier for four digital modulation schemes. The hierarchical classifier is based on quasi-log-likelihood ratio. Its performance is verified via extensive simulations. Simulation results show that the hierarchical algorithm is effective for classification of four SQAM signals. In this paper, the capacity and error probability of maximal ratio combining (MRC) reception are considered for different modulation schemes over correlated Nakagami fading channels. Based on an equivalent scalar additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, we derive the characteristic function (CF) and the probability density function (PDF) of the signal to noise ratio for MRC reception over Nakagami fading channels. Using these CF and PDF results, closed form error probability and capacity expressions are obtained for PSK, PAM and QAM modulation. In this paper, we propose a sub-optimum multiuser detection technique in multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) communication systems based on missing parameter expectation maximization (MPEM) algorithm. In the proposed detection procedure, first initial values for the bits of all users are estimated from received signal. Then, the proposed MPEM based algorithm uses outputs of carries’ demodulators to improve the accuracy of the initial estimates of the bits. In this paper, the expectation and maximization steps’ functions of the MPEM algorithm for MC-CDMA multiuser detection are derived and the performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed. Our presented numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed detection algorithm both in bit error rate performance and computational complexity points of view.
