The changes in water quality and benthic macroinvertebrate community structure and composition related to limestone strip mining in western Pennsylvania are recorded and compared to the recorded effects of coal strip mining. In contrast to coal strip mining characterized by high total acidity and iron concentrations with decreased total alkalinity and pH, limestone strip mining showed only a slight increase in total acidity and bicarbonate alkalinity, and no increase in iron concentration due to the formation of heavy deposits of ferric hydroxide. The sulphate concentration and conductance increased with both coal and limestone strip mining. Limestone strip mining did not result in the extreme deterioration of benthic community structure and composition reported with coal strip mining. The decreased species diversity recorded was directly correlated with the sulphate concentrations and resulted from changes in species abundance rather than species composition. The changes in species abundance appear to be related to changes in food resource availability due to the deposition of ferric hydroxide on the detritus.  相似文献

The Riou Mort watershed, strongly affected by former coal mining and Zn ore treatment, has been the major source of the historical polymetallic pollution of the Lot-Garonne-Gironde fluvial-estuarine system. Two decades after the end of ore treatment, the former industrial area still contributes important amounts of metals/metalloids from various, partly unidentified, sources to the downstream river system. This study presents the high spatial variability of metal/metalloid (Cd, Zn, As, Sb, U, V) concentrations in water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) from eight observation sites during a short, intense flood event. Despite important dilution effects, the observed concentration levels at the different sites suggested additional Cd and Zn inputs, probably from polluted groundwater. This formerly unknown metal source was then localized and characterized by sampling water and SPM along two longitudinal profiles during different hydrological situations. Groundwater inputs of "truly dissolved" (<0.02 microm) Cd and Zn occurred along approximately 200 m, contributing 43% and 28% to the total annual (2004) Cd and Zn fluxes in the Riou Mort River. The estimated groundwater concentrations of Cd and Zn (2500-6700 and 83,000-170,000 microg l(-1), respectively) in the source zone were consistent with values measured in samples from the near aquifer (5400-13,000 and 200,000-400,000 microg l(-1)). The present work induced concrete remediation actions (pumping and treatment of the polluted groundwater), that are expected to strongly reduce dissolved Cd and Zn emissions into the Riou Mort River.  相似文献

This study focused on characterizing air-surface mercury Hg exchange for individual surfaces (soil, litter-covered soil and plant shoots) and ecosystem-level flux associated with tallgrass prairie ecosystems housed inside large mesocosms over three years. The major objectives of this project were to determine if individual surface fluxes could be combined to predict ecosystem-level exchange and if this low-Hg containing ecosystem was a net source or sink for atmospheric Hg. Data collected in the field were used to validate fluxes obtained in the mesocosm setting. Because of the controlled experimental design and ease of access to the mesocosms, data collected allowed for assessment of factors controlling flux and comparison of models developed for soil Hg flux versus environmental conditions at different temporal resolution (hourly, daily and monthly). Evaluation of hourly data showed that relationships between soil Hg flux and environmental conditions changed over time, and that there were interactions between parameters controlling exchange. Data analyses demonstrated that to estimate soil flux over broad temporal scales (e.g. annual flux) coarse-resolution data (monthly averages) are needed. Plant foliage was a sink for atmospheric Hg with uptake influenced by plant functional type and age. Individual system component fluxes (bare soil and plant) could not be directly combined to predict the measured whole system flux (soil, litter and plant). Emissions of Hg from vegetated and litter-covered soil were lower than fluxes from adjacent bare soil and the difference between the two was seasonally dependent and greatest when canopy coverage was greatest. Thus, an index of plant canopy development (canopy greenness) was used to model Hg flux from vegetated soil. Accounting for ecosystem Hg inputs (precipitation, direct plant uptake of atmospheric Hg) and modeled net exchange between litter-and-plant covered soils, the tallgrass prairie was found to be a net annual sink of atmospheric Hg.  相似文献

The study of the dynamics of phytobenthic and phytoplankton communities was undertaken, during a year, in the regulation reservoir associated with a water treatment plant (WTP), which provides the city of Murcia (Spain) with drinking water. Water samples were collected in different stages of the treatment. In the reservoir, the presence of dissolved and intracellular microcystins is constant, both in benthos and in plankton. The collected samples show a positive correlation between the dissolved microcystins and the benthic ones in the reservoir itself, as well as in an upstream reservoir (Ojós Reservoir). The treatment process (ozone+clarification+ozone+activated carbon) is very effective in the removal of toxins, and the drinking water produced is totally free of microcystins. The incorporation of the benthic communities in the routine check for the presence of microcystins is recommended, since it is not compulsory according to the current legislation.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of water hardness and humic acid (HA) on the acute and chronic toxicity of copper to Daphnia pulex and on its accumulation by D. magna. Hardness had little effect on either the acute (3-day) or the chronic (42-day) toxicity of copper. Humic acid significantly reduced both the acute and chronic toxicity of copper when added to waters having hardnesses of 58, 115 and 230 mg l?1 as CaCO3. The effect, per unit of HA, on chronic toxicity was very similar for soft and medium water but less in hard water. At each of two HA concentrations, copper was chronically more toxic in hard water than in either medium or soft water. Bioaccumulation of copper varied with relative hardness and HA concentration and this was further affected by age at exposure. For 1-day-old animals, an increase in either hardness or HA- or any combination of the two, tended to decrease bioaccumulation. Results for 7-day-old animals were in general agreement except for animals exposed to copper in hard water at an intermediate HA concentration. These animals accumulated significantly more copper in the presence of HA. This agrees with the fact that this concentration of HA also increased the chronic toxicity of copper in hard water. Both of those phenomena are probably due to the displacement of Cu2+ from HA by competition from the increased concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The fact that HA had the opposite effect on copper accumulation by young animals in hard water could not be explained.  相似文献

Diel variations of concentrations of unfiltered and filtered total Hg and filtered methyl Hg were documented during 24-h sampling episodes in water from Silver Creek, which drains a historical gold-mining district near Helena, Montana, and the Madison River, which drains the geothermal system of Yellowstone National Park. The concentrations of filtered methyl Hg had relatively large diel variations (increases of 68 and 93% from morning minima) in both streams. Unfiltered and filtered (0.1-microm filtration) total Hg in Silver Creek had diel concentration increases of 24% and 7%, respectively. In the Madison River, concentrations of unfiltered and filtered total Hg did not change during the sampling period. The concentration variation of unfiltered total Hg in Silver Creek followed the diel variation in suspended-particle concentration. The concentration variation of filtered total and methyl Hg followed the solar photocycle, with highest concentrations during the early afternoon and evening and lowest concentrations during the morning. None of the diel Hg variations correlated with diel variation in streamflow or major ion concentrations. The diel variation in filtered total Hg could have been produced by adsorption-desorption of Hg2+ or by reduction of Hg(II) to Hg0 and subsequent evasion of Hg0. The diel variation in filtered methyl Hg could have been produced by sunlight- and temperature-dependent methylation. This study is the first to examine diel Hg cycling in streams, and its results reinforce previous conclusions that diel trace-element cycling in streams is widespread but often not recognized and that parts of the biogeochemical Hg cycle respond quickly to the daily photocycle.  相似文献

The Marikina River in the Philippines has been polluted by Payatas landfill leachate, and domestic and agricultural waste. This study monitored the water quality at five stations on the river and two stations on two creeks that discharge to the river to determine the effects of Payatas landfill and to estimate pollution loading. The dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and other water quality parameters were compared with the Philippines Standards for river water classification. It was found that Payatas leachate has a significant influence on the DO and COD levels as well as other water quality parameters. Per capita pollution loading for Quezon City was found to be lower than for Europe and Japan. The effect of leachate is more significant during the dry season. It is recommended that a leachate collection system be established to prevent leachate form entering Payatas creek, and that the Patayas landfill be replaced with a modern landfill site, conforming to current best practice at another location.

A study of the benthic macroinvertebrates of a fourth order stream in Southern Nigeria was carried out to assess the ecological impact of impoundment. Three stations 1, 2, and 3 were selected from upstream of the impoundment, the impoundment (reservoir) and its downstream, respectively. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the values of the physical and chemical parameters between the upstream and downstream stations. Water level, transparency, current velocity and dissolved oxygen were, however, significantly lower within the reservoir. The total number of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa and their overall density were significantly higher in the control station (upstream) than within the reservoir and the downstream station. The density of the three dominant taxonomic groups, Diptera, Oligochaeta and Ephemeroptera differed significantly (P < 0.05) among the stations. While chironomid dipterans dominated the up- and downstream stations, Oligochaeta was dominant in the reservoir. Ihe density of Ephemeroptera was significantly reduced within the reservoir and the downstream station. Analysis of faunal similarities showed that the upstream station I was significantly different from stations 2 and 3. Stream impoundment, therefore, alters not only the river hydrology but also the faunal characteristics of downstream stations. This study further strengthens the viewpoint that river management consideration should be implemented to lessen the impact on the downstream ecology. Furthermore, when considering impounding a river, the ecological implication must also be considered.  相似文献

The partitioning of particulate trace metals was investigated during one year of monthly sampling of suspended particulate matter (SPM) at eight sites along the Lot-Garonne fluvial system, known for its polymetallic pollution. The chemical partitioning in five operationally defined fractions (exchangeable/carbonate, Fe/Mn oxides, organic matter/sulfides, acid soluble, residual) was determined using a multiple single extraction approach. This approach showed that Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu were mainly associated with acid soluble phases (84-95%, 65-88%, 61-82% and 55-80% of the respective total metal content), and therefore showed a high mean potential of mobilization and bioavailability. In the Riou-Mort River, draining the smelting-wastes, Zn, Cd and Mn showed high mobility as they were little associated with the residual fraction (1-2%) and mainly bound to the 'exchangeable' fraction of SPM (60-80%), probably weakly adsorbed on amorphous freshly-precipitated sulfide and/or oxide phases. Upstream and downstream of the anthropogenic source of metallic pollution, Mn and Cd, and Zn to a lesser extent, remained highly reactive. The other trace metals were mainly associated with the residual fraction and thus less mobile. However, the multiple single extraction scheme revealed that the most reactive transport phases were non-selectively extracted by the conventional extractants used here. These selectivity problems could not have been observed if sequential extraction was used.  相似文献

通过收集梁滩河流域的生态、经济和社会状况资料,并利用遥感解译技术,分析影响河流生态系统健康的因素,采用指标体系分析法和专家咨询法,确立梁滩河生态系统健康评价指标体系和评价标准,计算得出评价指标权重,并对河流生态健康状况进行了评价。结果表明:梁滩河上、中、下游生态系统分别处于"亚健康"、"不健康"和"亚健康"级别。该研究结论将为重庆市正在开展的梁滩河保护规划和治理工作提供科学依据。  相似文献

The amount of glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), a glycoprotein produced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), its contribution to the sequestering of Cu and Zn in the soil, and the microsite variation of other soil traits (pH, water-stable aggregates--[WSA], soil organic carbon--[SOC]) was studied in a semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystem near a copper smelter and affected by deposit of metal-rich particles since 1964. Rhizospheric (R) and non-rhizospheric (NR) soil of four representative plants (Argemone subfusiformis, Baccharis linearis, Oenothera affinis and Polypogon viridis) was analyzed. The results showed a strong variability in GRSP (6.6-36.8 mg g(-1)), Cu content (62-831 mg kg(-1) for the total Cu and 5.8-326 mg kg(-1) for the available Cu) and pH (4.2-5.5) in the different plant and rhizospheric zones analyzed. A strong relationship between the GRSP with the soil Cu and Zn contents was found (r=0.89 and 0.76 for Cu and Zn respectively, p<0.001). The GRSP-bound Cu ranged from 3.76 to 89.0 mg g(-1) soil and represents 1.44-27.5% of the total Cu content in soil. Moreover, the WSA reached 89% in P. viridis R. For this plant, the C contained in GRSP represented up to 89% of SOC, and this coincided with the most extreme conditions of soil degradation within the ecosystem (the highest content of heavy metals and low pH values). This study provides evidence on the role of the GRSP in Cu and Zn sequestration and suggests a highly efficient mechanism of AMF to mitigate stress leading to stabilization of soils highly polluted by mining activities.  相似文献

Small-scale gold mining in Portovelo-Zaruma, Southern Equador, performed by mercury amalgamation and cyanidation, yields 9-10 t of gold/annum, resulting in annual releases of around 0.65 t of inorganic mercury and 6000 t of sodium cyanide in the local river system. The release of sediments, cyanide, mercury, and other metals present in the ore such as lead, manganese and arsenic significantly reduces biodiversity downstream the processing plants and enriches metals in bottom sediments and biota. However, methylmercury concentrations in sediments downstream the mining area were recently found to be one order of magnitude lower than upstream or in small tributaries. In this study we investigated cyanide, bacterial activity in water and sediment and mercury methylation potentials in sediments along the Puyango river watershed, measured respectively by in-situ spectrophotometry and incubation with 3H-leucine and 203Hg2+.Free cyanide was undetectable (< 1 μg·L− 1) upstream mining activities, reached 280 μg·L− 1 a few km downstream the processing plants area and was still detectable about 100 km downstream. At stations with detectable free cyanide in unfiltered water, 50% of it was dissolved and 50% associated to suspended particles. Bacterial activity and mercury methylation in sediment showed a similar spatial pattern, inverse to the one found for free cyanide in water, i.e. with significant values in pristine upstream sampling points (respectively 6.4 to 22 μgC·mg wet weight− 1·h− 1 and 1.2 to 19% of total 203Hg·g dry weight− 1·day− 1) and undetectable downstream the processing plants, returning to upstream values only in the most distant downstream stations. The data suggest that free cyanide oxidation was slower than would be expected from the high water turbulence, resulting in a long-range inhibition of bacterial activity and hence mercury methylation. The important mercury fluxes resultant from mining activities raise concerns about its biomethylation in coastal areas where many mangrove areas have been converted to shrimp farming.  相似文献

Flow measurements in a tidal‐affected river provide important information of cyclic flow pattern characteristics in temporal and spatial variations. Reliability and accuracy of measured flow data can provide for numerical model calibration and verification. In the present study, we measured tidally affected river flow in the Danshui River of northern Taiwan during the 2008 summer and fall. The measured flow data, produced by both state of the art and conventional instruments including particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), acoustic Doppler profiler (ADP), horizontal acoustic Doppler current profiler (H‐ADCP) and Price‐type current metre (PCM) were compared and correlated during several tidal cycles. The mean flows by ADP were similar to that by PCM and highly correlated with those by PTV and H‐ADCP. Index velocity rating between ADP and H‐ADCP separately computed during the flood and ebb tides shows good correlation for the ebb tide and poor correlation for the flood tide due to subsurface maximum velocity in the middle‐ to near‐bottom layers.  相似文献

In the Lusatia region of northeastern Germany, dewatering for mining activities has resulted in an 8-km3 deficit in the groundwater balance. In order to refill aquifers and empty lignite pits, water will be abstracted for several decades from the River Spree which drains this region. This affects the ecological integrity of a 230 km river section including the floodplain in several aspects. Ecological consequences are shown for fishes, the aquatic invertebrate fauna, the retention of suspended matter, and oxygen concentrations. Therefore, an ecologically based minimum discharge has to be instituted. Current concepts on the assessment of minimum flow requirements in streams are reviewed. A multiple compartment method (MCM) for the assessment of flow requirements in extended river sections is suggested. Using the MCM, it can be shown that the minimum discharge that is required to preserve the river ecosystem is largely influenced by ambient channel morphology and nutrient concentration. This means that the ecological impacts of water abstraction could be abated by measures of morphological restoration of the river as well as of nutrient input restriction. Also, instream minimum flow requirements would be reduced, so that more river water could be abstracted, and the restoration of the water balance in the post-mining area in Lusatia accelerated.  相似文献

Organisms of the planktonic food web convey essential nutrients as well as contaminants to animals at higher trophic levels. We measured concentrations of methyl mercury (MeHg) and essential fatty acids (EFAs, key nutrients for aquatic food webs) in four size categories of planktonic organisms - seston (10-64 microm), micro-(100-200 microm), meso-(200-500 microm), and macrozooplankton (>500 microm) - as well as total mercury (THg) and EFAs in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in coastal lakes. We demonstrate that, in all lakes during this summer sampling, MeHg concentrations of planktonic organisms increase significantly with plankton size, independent of their taxonomic composition, and that their MeHg accumulation patterns predict significantly THg concentrations in rainbow trout (R2=0.71, p<0.05). However, concentrations of total EFAs do not follow this pattern. Total EFAs increased from seston to mesozooplankton but decreased in the largest zooplankton size fraction. Moreover, concentrations of individual EFA compounds in rainbow trout are consistently lower, with the exception of docosahexaenoic acid, than those in macrozooplankton. The continuous increase of MeHg concentrations in aquatic organisms, therefore, differs from patterns of EFA accumulation in zooplankton and fish. We interpret these contrasting accumulation patterns of MeHg and EFA compounds as the inability of aquatic organisms to regulate the assimilation of dietary MeHg, whereas the rate of EFA retention may be controlled to optimize their physiological performance. Therefore, we conclude that bioaccumulation patterns of Hg in these aquatic food webs are not controlled by lipid solubility and/or the retention of EFA compounds.  相似文献

Water and sediment quality and benthic biota were investigated in all seasons during three years in the River Akagawa that receives the effluent from a mine drainage treatment plant at its upstream site. The upper reaches kept the low pH, the comparatively high concentrations of metals and a large amount of iron deposited on the riverbed. The predominant macroinvertebrates were Protonemura sp., Capnidae, Nemoura sp. and Chironomidae in the upper and middle reaches. In the lowest reaches, the community structure of the macroinvertebrate changed into Chironomidae, Trichoptera (Hydropsychidae) and Ephemeroptera (Baetis sp.) as the pH was increased. From the results of multivariate analyses, it was found that the restoration of pH and attached algae and the increase in the concentrations of nutrients and organic matter promoted the inhabitation of Chironomidae and Hydropsychidae, whereas the dissolved metals in the river water inhibited the inhabitation of these families. Moreover, the sedimentation of metals would cause a severe damage to the inhabitation of Hydropsychidae compared with that of Chironomidae.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) contamination in tundra region has raised substantial concerns, especially since the first report of atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) in the Polar Regions. During the past decade, steady progress has been made in the research of Hg cycling in the Polar Regions. This has generated a unique opportunity to survey the whole Arctic in respect to Hg issue and to find out new discoveries. However, there are still considerable knowledge gaps and debates on the fate of Hg in the Arctic and Antarctica, especially regarding the importance and significance of AMDEs vs. net Hg loadings and other processes that burden Hg in the Arctic. Some studies argued that climate warming since the last century has exerted profound effects on the limnology of High Arctic lakes, including substantial increases in autochthonous primary productivity which increased in sedimentary Hg, whereas some others pointed out the importance of the formation and postdeposition crystallographic history of the snow and ice crystals in determining the fate and concentration of mercury in the cryosphere in addition to AMDEs. Is mercury re-emitted back to the atmosphere after AMDEs? Is Hg methylation effective in the Arctic tundra? Where the sources of MeHg are? What is its fate? Is this stimulated by human made? This paper presents a critical review about the fate of Hg in the Arctic tundra, such as pathways and process of Hg delivery into the Arctic ecosystem; Hg concentrations in freshwater and marine ecosystems; Hg concentrations in terrestrial biota; trophic transfer of Hg and bioaccumulation of Hg through food chain. This critical review of mercury fates and contamination in the Arctic tundra ecosystem is assessing the impacts and potential risks of Hg contamination on the health of Arctic people and the global northern environment by highlighting and “perspectiving” the various mercury processes and concentrations found in the Arctic tundra.  相似文献

A portable respirometer has been used to measure oxygen uptake and production rates, by fixed and suspended organisms in an East Devon river which receives papermill effluent. Benthic respiration dominates the oxygen balance in the stretch most affected by the effluent and increases the effective BOD decomposition rate by a factor of up to 12: Values of decomposition rate of 3.5–4.5 (day−1) have been measured in the stream.  相似文献
