In recent years, the state departments of transportation have implemented a number of highway rehabilitation projects across the country. These projects differ fundamentally from new highway projects in that they require an uninterrupted flow of traffic throughout both the duration and geometric length of the project. Synchronization of traffic closure with the construction activities is crucial in such projects to avoid the traffic conflicts and prevent idle time for equipment and labor. Although most highway rehabilitation projects involve predominantly linear activities, the techniques of linear scheduling are not readily applicable to highway rehabilitation projects due to the conflict between the workzone and traffic flow. This paper documents the development of a traffic closure integrated linear schedule (TCILS) that addresses both traffic closure and work progress issues. The TCILS generates a single schedule for both the construction activities and the associated traffic closures. Visual and graphical features are also applied in the system, which makes it particularly applicable for highway rehabilitation projects. An actual concrete pavement rehabilitation project using the TCILS is presented as a sample of application. The findings from the sample project, although they are limited, show that the TCILS can be applied to an actual project. With recommended future development, the system is believed to be beneficial for both construction practitioners and academics.  相似文献

This paper presents a multiobjective optimization model for the planning and scheduling of repetitive construction projects. The model enables construction planners to generate and evaluate optimal construction plans that minimize project duration and maximize crew work continuity, simultaneously. The computations in the present model are organized in three major modules: scheduling, optimization, and ranking modules. First, the scheduling module uses a resource-driven scheduling algorithm to develop practical schedules for repetitive construction projects. Second, the optimization module utilizes multiobjective genetic algorithms to search for and identify feasible construction plans that establish optimal tradeoffs between project duration and crew work continuity. Third, the ranking module uses multiattribute utility theory to rank the generated plans in order to facilitate the selection and execution of the best overall plan for the project being considered. An application example is analyzed to illustrate the use of the model demonstrate its new capabilities in optimizing the planning and scheduling of repetitive construction projects.  相似文献

Most state highways in the United States were built during the 1960s and 1970s with an infrastructure investment of more than $1 trillion. They now exceed their 20?year design lives and are seriously deteriorated. The consequences are high maintenance and road user costs because of degraded road surfaces and construction work zone delays. Efficient planning of highway rehabilitation closures is critical. This paper presents a simulation model, Construction Analysis for Pavement Rehabilitation Strategies (CA4PRS), which estimates the maximum amount of highway rehabilitation/reconstruction during various closure timeframes. The model balances project constraints such as scheduling interfaces, pavement materials and design, contractor logistics and resources, and traffic operations. It has been successfully used on several urban freeway rehabilitation projects with high traffic volume, including projects on I-10 and I-710. The CA4PRS helps agencies and contractors plan highway rehabilitation strategies by taking into account long-life pavement performance, construction productivity, traffic delay, and total cost.  相似文献

Large scale earthmoving operations require the use of heavy and costly construction equipment. Optimum utilization of equipment is a crucial task for the project management team. It can result in substantial savings in both time and cost of earthmoving operations. This paper presents optimization model for earthmoving operations in heavy civil engineering projects. The developed model is designed to assist general contractor in optimizing planning of earthmoving operations. The model utilizes genetic algorithm, linear programming, and geographic information systems to support its management functions. The model assists in planning earthmoving operations; taking into consideration: (1) availability of resources to contractors; (2) project budget and/or time constraints, if any; (3) scope of work; (4) construction site conditions; (5) soil type; (6) project indirect cost; and (7) equipment characteristics. The model also determines the quantities of earth to be moved from different borrow pits and those to be placed at different landfill sites to meet optimization objective set by the user and to meet project constraints. The model has been implemented in prototype software, using object-oriented programming. Two numerical example projects are presented to validate and demonstrate the use of the developed model in optimizing earthmoving operations.  相似文献

A general mathematical formulation is presented for the scheduling of construction projects and is applied to the problem of highway construction scheduling. Repetitive and nonrepetitive tasks, work continuity constraints, multiple-crew strategies, and the effects of varying job conditions on the performance of a crew can be modeled. An optimization formulation is presented for the construction project scheduling problem, with the goal of minimizing the direct construction cost. The nonlinear optimization is then solved by the neural dynamics model developed recently by Adeli and Park. For any given construction duration, the model yields the optimum construction schedule for minimum construction cost automatically. By varying the construction duration, one can solve the cost-duration trade-off problem and obtain the global optimum schedule and the corresponding minimum construction cost. The new construction scheduling model provides the capabilities of both the critical path method (CPM) and linear scheduling method (LSM) approaches. In addition, it provides features desirable for repetitive projects, such as highway construction, and allows schedulers greater flexibility. It is particularly suitable for studying the effects of change order on the construction cost. This research provides the mathematical foundation for development of a new generation of more general, flexible, and accurate construction scheduling systems.  相似文献

Time-cost analysis is an important element of project scheduling, especially for lengthy and costly construction projects, as it evaluates alternative schedules and establishes an optimum one considering any project completion deadline. Existing methods for time-cost analysis have not adequately considered typical activity and project characteristics, such as generalized precedence relationships between activities, external time constraints, activity planning constraints, and bonuses/penalties for early/delayed project completion that would provide a more realistic representation of actual construction projects. The present work aims to incorporate such characteristics in the analysis and has developed two solution methods, an exact and an approximate one. The exact method utilizes a linear/integer programming model to provide the optimal project time-cost curve and the minimum cost schedule considering all activity time-cost alternatives together. The approximate method performs a progressive project length reduction providing a near-optimal project time-cost curve but it is faster than the exact method as it examines only certain activities at each stage. In addition, it can be easily incorporated in project scheduling software. Evaluation results indicate that both methods can effectively simulate the structure of construction projects, and their application is expected to provide time and cost savings.  相似文献

In recent years, many departments of transportation in the United States have started to apply the A + B bidding method in highway projects in order to reduce construction time and minimize its associated traffic congestion and adverse impact on local economies. The application of this method places an increased pressure on contractors to minimize both the time and cost of highway construction. This paper presents a practical model for optimizing resource utilization in highway projects that utilize the A + B bidding method. The model is designed to minimize the total combined bid by identifying the optimum crew formation and the optimum level of crew work continuity for each activity in the project. The model is developed using a dynamic programming formulation and is incorporated in a Windows application that provides a user-friendly interface to facilitate the optimization analysis. An application example of a highway project is analyzed to illustrate the use of the model and to demonstrate its capabilities.  相似文献

The utilization of nighttime work in highway construction and rehabilitation projects has been increasing in recent years throughout the United States. In this type of projects, construction planners are required to develop and submit a lighting plan that provides: (1) adequate illuminance levels for all planned nighttime construction tasks; (2) reasonable uniformity of light distribution in the work area, and (3) acceptable glare levels to both road users and construction workers. In order to support construction planners in this vital and challenging task, this paper presents a lighting design model, named CONLIGHT, which is capable of considering the specific requirements of nighttime highway construction operations. The model is developed to enable construction planners to evaluate the performance of various lighting plans and select a practical design that complies with all lighting requirements for the nighttime work being planned. An application example is analyzed to illustrate the use of the model and demonstrate its accuracy and capabilities in generating practical lighting plans for nighttime construction and rehabilitation projects.  相似文献

Selecting construction methods, scheduling activities, and planning the use of site space are key to constructing a project efficiently. Site layout and activity scheduling have been tackled as independent problems. Their interdependence is often ignored at the planning stage and may be dealt with—if at all—when construction is underway. Problems that may have had easy solutions if dealt with earlier, may then be expensive to remedy. This paper addresses the combined problem termed “space scheduling” and presents an algorithmic time-space trade-off model for adjusting activity durations and start dates to decrease the need for space over congested time periods. The model characterizes resource space requirements over time and establishes a time-space relationship for each activity in the schedule, based on alternative resource levels. An example illustrates the presented algorithm that generates a feasible space schedule.  相似文献

This paper presents the development of an object-oriented model for scheduling of repetitive construction projects such as high-rise buildings, housing projects, highways, pipeline networks, bridges, tunnels, railways, airport runways, and water and sewer mains. The paper provides an overview of the analysis, design, and implementation stages of the developed object-oriented model. These stages are designed to provide an effective model for scheduling repetitive construction projects and to satisfy practical scheduling requirements. The model incorporates newly developed procedures for resource-driven scheduling of repetitive activities, optimization of repetitive construction scheduling, and integration of repetitive and nonrepetitive scheduling techniques. The model is named LSCHEDULER and is implemented as a windows application that supports user-friendly interface including menus, dialogue boxes, and windows. LSCHEDULER can be applied to perform regular scheduling as well as optimized scheduling. In optimized scheduling, the model can assist in identifying an optimum crew utilization option for each repetitive activity in the project that provides a minimum duration or cost for the scheduled repetitive construction project.  相似文献

When the volume of construction projects let to contract increases significantly, state departments of transportation must critically examine internal construction project management staffing capabilities and accurately forecast the manpower required to execute future projects. This paper describes the development of a model or process to forecast manpower requirements as a function of project type and cost for selected employee classifications. Using data from 130 recently completed highway construction projects and over 11,000 employee payroll entries, regression analysis plots were generated to predict overall manpower requirements for projects of a given type and cost. These overall requirements were then adjusted to predict manpower requirements for individual employee classifications using typical task allocation percentages obtained from questionnaire data. The output from the model serves as input into commercially available critical path method scheduling software to facilitate manpower planning and resource leveling.  相似文献

Network scheduling is typically performed in three phases—network creation, analysis, and development. Although the critical path method (CPM) constitutes a well-established logic in network analysis, human intuition and experience are required for the creation and development of the network. Because of this, a variety of alternative CPM networks can be created in scheduling the same project. The use of the most desirable network can lead to a considerable reduction in the duration of the projects. This can be achieved by accurately identifying activities and linking them in an appropriate manner. Many researchers insisted that network scheduling lacks efficiency in scheduling repetitive-unit projects. Because of this, many scheduling methods have been developed to model such types of projects. However, most are not network based and require a large amount of input data, although most leading scheduling software remains network based and field engineers desire networklike forms of the schedule. In an effort to overcome this limitation, this paper presents a procedure for creating and developing networks for repetitive-unit projects. This network-based model incorporates a two-dimensional arrangement of activities, resource-space coordinates, for ease in creating a network and optimizes the activity linkage, thus resulting in the most desirable results. The model is applied to a typical repetitive-unit project to illustrate the use and capabilities of the model. The model can serve as an aid for inexperienced schedulers in creating a network as well as its optimization. An experienced scheduler can also check the desirability of his or her own created network via the use of this model.  相似文献

This paper focuses on future research and the use of project management software in the construction industry. Data are drawn from an empirical study of project management professionals that yielded 240 replies (35% response rate), 42 of which were from the construction industry. Data were collected on: demographics and work environment, project management software usage patterns, analytical technique usage, data management, and suggestions for future research. The results indicate that construction professionals have different characteristics, needs and preferences, as compared to the overall sample. The study shows that construction professionals are more experienced and educated than the respondents in the overall study, they tend to work on fewer projects with larger numbers of activities, and they are more likely to use Primavera (Primavera, Inc., Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) than Microsoft Project (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash.). Construction respondents are heavy users of critical path analysis for planning and control, resource scheduling for planning, and earned value analysis for control. The number of activities in a typical project and the use of software for all active projects were the key determinants of the usage of specific analytical techniques. These factors are also significant determinants of the types of information entered and updated, although the effect is weaker. Although construction professionals are generally satisfied with the quality of schedules produced by the software, they still expressed a clear interest in future research on resource scheduling∕leveling in general and a net present value option in particular. To maximize the impact on practice, development of new planning and control methods should include their integration into project management software.  相似文献

Increasing complexity of many constructed facilities and escalating demands for project performance are driving significant changes in design and construction. Increased project integration and technical support of construction operations provide a promising response to these demands. This paper identifies and describes nine critical activities to increase technical support for construction: integrate early planning; plan for regulatory compliance; consider construction methods and sequences in design; tailor and time technical information to users’ needs; provide materials to support effective construction; identify and provide construction-applied resources; create an environment for safe, productive, and high quality work; technically support efficient construction operations and completion; and transfer experience between projects. The paper’s relevance to industry practitioners includes multiple benefits of completing these activities for firms, projects, and professionals, along with the necessary steps to develop this capability and gain these benefits. Educators and researchers can use the activities to structure course topics related to technical fundamentals of construction and integration with design, along with future investigations of construction process knowledge.  相似文献

This paper presents a model, designed to optimize scheduling of linear projects. The model employs a two-state-variable, N-stage, dynamic programming formulation, coupled with a set of heuristic rules. The model is resource-driven, and incorporates both repetitive and nonrepetitive activities in the optimization process to generate practical and near-optimal schedules. The model optimizes either project construction duration, total cost, or their combined impact for what is known as cost-plus-time bidding, also referred to as A+B bidding. The model has a number of interesting and practical features. It supports multiple crews to work simultaneously on any activity, while accounting for: (1) multiple successors and predecessors with specified lead and lag times; (2) the impact of transverse obstructions, such as rivers and creeks, on crew assignments and associated time and cost; (3) the effect of inclement weather and learning curve on crew productivity; and (4) variations in quantities of work in repetitive activities from one unit to another. The model is implemented in a prototype software that operates in Windows? environment. It is developed utilizing object-oriented programming, and provides for automated data entry. Several graphical and tabular output reports can be generated. An example project, drawn from the literature, is analyzed to demonstrate the features of the developed model.  相似文献

An increasing volume of highway repair and construction work is being performed during the off-peak nighttime hours to mitigate the impact of construction-related daytime traffic congestions and shorten the duration of construction operations. The utilization and placement of light towers to illuminate the work zone in this type of construction can cause harmful levels of glare for both drivers and construction workers. This paper presents the results of field experiments which were conducted to (1) study the levels of glare and lighting performance generated by light towers in and around nighttime work zones; (2) analyze the combined impact of the light tower set up parameters including its height as well as its aiming and rotation angles on glare and lighting performance; and (3) provide practical recommendations to reduce and control lighting glare in and around nighttime work zones. The results of these experiments confirm that the set up of light towers has a significant impact on glare and therefore it should be carefully designed and executed on nighttime highway construction projects to ensure the safety of the traveling public as well as construction workers.  相似文献

Many projects, such as the construction of roadways, pipelines, and high‐rise buildings, involve repetitive activities. A method for scheduling such work, the Linear Scheduling Method (LSM) is presented. In an LSM schedule, the repetitive activities are plotted as lines of constant or varying slopes on two axes, distance versus time. Discrete activities may be shown at their appropriate times and locations and then referenced to a network schedule for additional detail. The Linear Scheduling Method is illustrated by applying it to an actual roadway construction project. The simplicity of the system and advantages for certain types of projects are revealed. A sample schedule is used to derive information that is comparable to what may be obtained from an equivalent CPM network.  相似文献

Buffering is a common practice in project planning. Project managers or schedulers have used a time contingency to guarantee the completion time of either an activity or a project. This traditional buffering, however, often fails to protect the project schedule performance, resulting in an unnecessary resource idle time. To deal with this problem, reliability buffering, a simulation-based buffering strategy, is presented. Reliability buffering aims to generate a robust construction plan that protects against uncertainties by reducing the potential impact of construction changes. The effectiveness of reliability buffering is examined by simulating a dynamic project model that integrates the simulation approach with the network scheduling approach. The research results indicate that reliability buffering can help achieve a shorter project duration without driving up costs by pooling, resizing, relocating, and recharacterizing contingency buffers. A case study of bridge construction projects also demonstrates how construction projects can benefit from reliability buffering in real world settings. Although further validation is needed, reliability buffering can potentially impact the planning and control of construction projects by improving the consideration of construction feedbacks and characteristics in buffering, and serving as an input to a dynamic project model.  相似文献

Due to an increasingly competitive environment, construction companies are becoming more sophisticated, narrowing their focus, and becoming specialists in certain types of construction. This specialization requires more focused scheduling tools that prove to be better for certain type of projects. The critical path method (CPM) is the most utilized scheduling tool in the construction industry. However, for certain types of projects, CPM's usefulness decreases, because it becomes complex and difficult to use and understand. Alternative scheduling tools designed to be used with specific types of projects can prove to be more practical than CPM solutions. This paper provides a comparison of the CPM and a specialized tool, the linear scheduling model, by identifying critical attributes needed by any scheduling tool both at the higher management level and at the project level. Two project examples are scheduled with each method, and differences are discussed. Conclusions support that specialization of scheduling tools could be beneficial for the project manager and the project.  相似文献
