The effects of the maturity of grass prior to ensiling and the supplementation of starch to grass silage on apparent digestibility, degradability, rumen content, and feed intake by dairy cows were investigated using a Latin square design. Treatments were silages from early or late cut grass with or without 4 kg of supplemental flaked corn starch. The silage from early cut grass contained more N and sugars than did the silage from late cut grass but was lower in neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Degradation characteristics were not different between the two silages. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and N in the silage from late cut grass were lower than those in the silage from early cut grass, but NDF digestibility was not affected. Starch supplementation increased the lag phase for DM and OM in both silages, but the rate of degradation was decreased for NDF. Starch supplementation did not influence digestibilities of DM and OM in silage from early cut grass but decreased the digestibilities of DM and OM in silage from late cut grass. Crude protein and NDF digestibilities were decreased for silages from early and late cut grass. Starch supplementation increased NDF in the rumen of cows fed the silage from early cut grass, but NDF was not affected by starch supplementation for cows fed the silage from late cut grass. Rumen-degradable starch negatively influences degradability and apparent OM digestibility; the extent of the decrease is related to the maturity of the NDF.  相似文献

Effects of supplemental Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diets of dairy cows on milk yield and composition and blood metabolite concentrations were investigated. Twenty multiparous and 5 primiparous midlactation Holstein cows were assigned to treatments following a 3-wk covariate period; cows were then on the treatments for 70 d. Ten of the cows had previously been fitted with rumen cannulas. Five concentrate mixtures containing 0, 7.5, 15, 22, or 29% Jet-Sploded canola seed (Simons Feed Co., Quimby, IA) (equivalent to 0, 2.66, 5.33, 7.81, and 10.30% added fat, respectively) were formulated by substituting Jet-Sploded canola seed for barley and canola meal. Diets consisted of 25% alfalfa silage, 25% whole-crop oat silage, and 50% of one of the concentrate mixtures (dry matter basis). An increase in the amount of dietary fat from Jet-Sploded canola seed did not influence feed intake, milk yield or composition, or milk component yields. The inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diet increased long-chain fatty acids and inhibited de novo synthesis of medium-chain fatty acids in milk. Mean total volatile fatty acids in the rumen and propionate concentration were reduced in a linear fashion by treatment. The inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed in the diets of mid-lactation cows altered rumen and blood metabolite concentrations; however, these changes had minimal effects on yield responses with the exception of milk fatty acid composition and milk protein content.  相似文献

Three multiparous Holstein cows in midlactation were fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas. Cows were used in an experiment with a 3 x 3 Latin square design to study the effect of corn processing on nutrient flow from the rumen to the duodenum and on ruminal fermentation in lactating cows. Cows were fed diets consisting of 40% forage and 60% concentrate. The only difference in dietary ingredients was the type of processed corn included at 24% of the total diet (as-fed basis). Treatments were dry-rolled corn with a bulk density of 0.54 kg/L and steam-flaked corn with a bulk density of either 0.39 kg/L or 0.31 kg/L. Ruminal fluid pH was not affected by corn processing, but steam-flaking decreased the molar percentage of acetate and increased the molar percentage of propionate. Digestibility of starch in the rumen was not affected by processing. Digestibility of starch entering the duodenum as well as apparent digestibility of starch in the total tract were increased by steam-flaking. Flow of feed and microbial N from the rumen and microbial N efficiency were not affected by grain processing. Yields of milk and milk components as well as composition of milk were not affected by grain processing.  相似文献

We used 216 Holstein steers (151 kg) in a 262-d trial to evaluate the influence of dietary magnesium level (.19, .25, and .32%) and laidlomycin propionate (LP; 0 vs 11 ppm, air-dry basis) on growth performance and NE value of the diet. During the initial 112 d of the trial, LP increased (P < .01) ADG (6.3%) and feed efficiency (4.2%). From d 112 until slaughter, LP increased (P < .05) ADG (9.7%) and feed efficiency (4.5%). Across the 262-d feeding period, LP supplementation enhanced (P < .01) ADG (8.9%) and feed efficiency (6.3%). There was an interaction (P < .05) between dietary Mg and LP on NE value of the diet. The enhancement in NE value of the diets owing to LP with .19, .25, and .32% dietary Mg were .5, 3.0, and 5.9%, respectively. Six Holstein steers (302 kg) were used in a 6 x 6 Latin square experiment to evaluate treatment effects on characteristics of ruminal and total tract digestion. There were no treatment interactions (P > .10) on site and extent of digestion of OM, starch, and N. Supplemental Mg increased (quadratic effect, P < .10) ruminal OM digestion. Neither LP nor dietary Mg level affected (P > .10) ruminal digestion of starch and feed N. Supplemental LP decreased (15%, P < .05) ruminal microbial efficiency. Total tract digestion of OM and N increased (linear effect, P < .01) with increasing dietary Mg level. There were interactions between LP and dietary Mg level on ruminal soluble-Mg concentration (linear effect, P < .01) and Mg absorption (quadratic effect, P < .05). Apparent total tract Mg digestion increased owing to LP (P < .01) and dietary Mg level (linear effect, P < .01). There were no treatment effects (P > .10) on ruminal pH. Dietary Mg level did not influence (P > .10) ruminal VFA concentrations or molar proportions. Supplemental LP increased (14%; P < .10) total ruminal VFA concentration but did not affect (P > .10) VFA molar proportions. We conclude that LP will increase daily weight gain and feed efficiency of calf-fed Holstein steers and that this response may be enhanced by increasing dietary Mg level.  相似文献

Sixty-three of 209 (30.1%) samples of cattle feed that were collected from multiple commercial sources and from farms were found to contain Escherichia coli. However, none of the feed samples examined were culture-positive for E. coli O157. Replication of fecal E. coli, including E. coli O157, was demonstrated in a variety of feeds at temperatures that were similar to those found on farms in summer months. Fresh mixed rations containing corn silage were sampled from 16 dairies. Rations from 12 of these dairies were found to contain E. coli, and the rations from 5 dairies had concentrations of E. coli that were greater than 1000 cfu/g. The ability of experimental mixed rations to support the replication of E. coli was correlated with the concentration of organic acids in the corn silage that was used in the ration. Widespread contamination of cattle feeds with E. coli and the ability of E. coli to replicate in feeds suggest that feeds are a potentially important factor in the ecology of organisms that can be transmitted from feces to mouth, such as E. coli O157.  相似文献

The effect on milk yield and composition of the supplementation of the diets of dairy cows with wheat or potato peelings was studied at three different starch intakes (< 5, 6, and > 7.5 kg/d) for dry matter intakes around 20 kg/d. Starch supply was varied using different dietary concentrations of corn silage. Trials were conducted using Latin square designs, and all cows were fed a total mixed diet composed of corn silage, grass silage, or both; soybean meal; a mixed meal with formaldehyde treatment; minerals; and one of the following energy concentrates: potato peelings or wheat. Dry matter and energy intakes varied significantly only at the low starch concentration; higher intakes were observed when the potato peelings were fed. Body weight, milk yield, true protein content, lactose content, and protein yield were not affected by treatment. Milk fat content was higher (+3.3 g/kg) when potato peelings were fed at the high starch concentration but was unaffected at the low and medium starch concentration. Slow degradation of starch from the potato peelings in the rumen could enhance a higher delivery of precursors of milk fat synthesis in the udder. The effect on fat yield differed among starch concentrations. Milk fat content appeared to decrease for cows fed diets containing quickly degradable starch at a starch intake > 7 kg/d.  相似文献

The effects of choice of diets on feed intake were studied using 12 lactating Holstein cows. A switchback design was used that had three periods and two sequential blocks. Diets were 1) a control total mixed ration (TMR), which consisted of alfalfa haylage, corn silage, and a concentrate mixture based on ground corn and soybean meal (25:25:50 on a dry matter basis) and 2) a sweetened TMR in which a brown sugar food product constituted 1.5% of the dietary dry matter. Treatments consisted of the control TMR fed on both sides of divided feed bunks, the sweetened TMR fed on both sides of divided feed bunks, or both TMR fed on alternating (daily) sides of divided feed bunks in tie stalls. Periods were 2 wk in duration, and cows averaged 67 and 53 d of lactation at the start of blocks 1 and 2, respectively. The dry matter intake, body weight, milk yield, and percentages of milk fat, protein, and solids not fat were similar when either TMR was fed alone. A choice of control TMR or sweetened TMR did not affect any of these variables. The dry matter intake, body weight, milk yield, and milk protein percentage were affected by block; however, these effects were probably caused by differences between the blocks in environment and stage of lactation. The results of this experiment might have been affected by the composition of the control TMR, its similarity to the sweetened TMR, availability of both diets simultaneously when a choice was offered, and use of a TMR instead of separate feeds or simpler mixtures.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of fat supplementation from canola seed (CS) on ruminal fermentation and postruminal digestion of OM, carbohydrates, and energy of diets containing different levels of forage. Six ruminally and duodenally cannulated beef steers (354 kg +/- 18) were given ad libitum access to six isonitrogenous diets that were offered twice daily in a 6 x 6 Latin square design. Treatments were arranged as a 2 x 3 factorial with two forage levels (70 vs 30% of dietary DM as corn silage) and three forms of CS supplementation including no CS or CS added at 10% of dietary DM as whole CS treated with alkaline hydrogen peroxide or untreated crushed CS. Fat from CS provided 5% of dietary DM. The remaining dietary ingredients were corn, canola meal, molasses, and urea. No interactions (P > .05) between dietary forage level and CS supplementation were observed for ruminal characteristics or digestion of OM, carbohydrates, and energy in the rumen, postruminally, or in the total tract. Fat supplementation from CS did not affect (P > .05) DMI. With few exceptions, fat supplementation did not affect (P > .05) ruminal, postruminal, or total tract digestibilities of OM, structural and nonstructural carbohydrates, and GE. Ruminal disappearance of GE was decreased (P < .05) when diets were supplemented with fat from whole treated CS, and total tract digestibilities of OM and GE were decreased (P < .05) when diets were supplemented with fat from CS in either form. Ruminal pH, concentrations of NH3 N and total VFA, and molar proportions of acetate, propionate, and butyrate were not affected (P > .05) by fat supplementation. Results suggest that fat supplementation from CS (at 5% of dietary DM) as whole treated or untreated crushed had no negative effects on ruminal fermentation of OM, carbohydrates, or energy when steers were given ad libitum access to diets containing high or low forage.  相似文献

The ability of the rumen to absorb the same quantity of VFA with 4 animals previously fed with 2 levels of intake was tested. Animals received maintenance (P1) and half maintenance (P2) energy and nitrogen requirements successively. Absorption was measured with the empty washed rumen technique. Three litres of a solution buffered at pH 6.30 containing VFA (C2:57.1, C3:49.2 and C4:7.4 mM or C2:79.8, C3:23.5 and C4:11.5 mM) and CoEDTA (7.1 mg Co/l) were introduced in the rumen and regularly sampled for 3 h. VFA absorption was linear during the trials. Rates of absorption were expressed as mmol/h or percentage of initial quantity/h for the comparison between VFA. The order of absorption rate (%/h) was C4 > C3 > C2. Water absorption was not significantly different between the periods whereas VFA absorption rates (mmol/h) were significantly reduced after undernutrition. Composition of the solution had no significant effect on VFA absorption rate (%/h).  相似文献

We conducted a study to determine the effects of treating barley grain with a fibrolytic enzyme mixture on chewing activities, ruminal fermentation, and total tract digestibility in cattle. We also investigated the potential benefits of using barley straw rather than barley silage as a roughage source in high-grain diets for feedlot cattle. Steers were given ad libitum access to one of four diets that consisted of 95% barley-based concentrate and 5% forage (DM basis). The concentrate was either control or enzyme-treated, and the forage was either barley silage or barley straw. Applying the enzyme mixture onto the barley lowered the concentrations of dietary ADF and NDF. However, it is not certain when this fiber hydrolysis occurred relative to feed consumption because the fiber analyses were conducted after the study was completed. Enzyme treatment of barley increased total tract dietary ADF digestibility by 28% (P<.05). Acetate-to-propionate ratio tended to decrease, which suggests that enzymes may have increased ruminal starch digestion as a result of enhanced digestion of barley hulls. Replacing silage with straw increased ADF intake (P<.05) and resulted in 1-h/d increase in rumination time (P<.05). Even though there was no effect of diet on ruminal pH, replacing silage with straw increased ruminal acetate, as a percentage of total VFA, and total tract ADF digestion (P<.01). This study demonstrates that using a fibrolytic enzyme mixture in high-grain diets that contain mainly barley grain can improve fiber digestion and grain utilization, but the mode of action is unclear. Straw can be used rather than silage to increase the effective fiber content of a high-grain feedlot diet.  相似文献

Three midlactation Holstein cows with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used in a 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine whether ruminal or postruminal alterations in metabolism were responsible for the changes in milk composition that frequently are associated with dietary fish meal. Cows were offered a diet of 60:40 forage to concentrate (aliquots at 6-h intervals) that was supplemented with isonitrogenous amounts of soybean meal (1.3 kg of DM/d) dosed into the rumen or fish meal (1.0 kg DM/d) dosed either into the rumen or into the duodenum. The DMI, ruminal NDF digestion, and flows of total N and microbial N to the duodenum decreased for cows receiving fish meal. Dietary N flow increased when fish meal was dosed into the rumen. Total concentration of ruminal VFA was greater for cows receiving the soybean meal treatment; however, treatment had no effect on the ratio of ruminal acetate plus butyrate to propionate. Milk and FCM yields were unaffected by treatment, but milk fat content decreased, and milk protein content increased when cows were supplemented with fish meal. The difference in mammary arteriovenous glucose difference decreased when cows were dosed with fish meal. Changes in plasma NEFA and triglycerides were small and inconsistent. Results from this experiment suggest that effects of fish meal on milk composition are due to postruminal alterations in metabolism.  相似文献

Effluent from grass silage is a threat to water quality and a loss of valuable forage nutrients from dairy farms. Absorbents potentially reduce effluent loss when weather conditions are not ideal for field wilting. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of various absorbents at reducing silage effluent. First-harvest, direct-cut, perennial grass forage was ensiled with and without absorbents in medium-sized experimental silos for 3 consecutive yr. Silos contained 4.54 kg of grass and one of the following feed quality absorbents: 10% rolled barley, 10% dried and pelleted beet pulp, or alfalfa cubes at 10, 20, or 30%. Nonfeed quality absorbents used were 1% starch grafter polymer, 1% bentonite clay, and 10% newspaper. Silage from direct-harvest control forage produced the highest effluent losses, but the wilting of grass prior to ensiling or the mixing of grass with 30% alfalfa cubes nearly eliminated effluent. Silage pH was lowest when rolled barley or beet pulp was used as the absorbent and was highest for wilted grass. Silage dry matter was increased by wilting and by the use of barley, beet pulp, newspapers, or alfalfa cubes as absorbents. The addition of 10% newspaper greatly reduced in vitro dry matter digestibility and crude protein. Increased water-soluble carbohydrate concentrations were found for silage from grass forage treated with rolled barley, beet pulp, or alfalfa cubes prior to ensiling. Although bentonite clay and newspapers reduced effluent losses, greater water-soluble carbohydrate losses were found for these treatments compared with the direct control. Alfalfa cubes were found to be effective absorbents and did not reduce grass silage quality.  相似文献

This experiment examined the effect of feed quality on the relationship between intake and stage of lactation in dairy cows. Two total mixed diets composed of grass silage and concentrate were formulated. The high concentrate total mixed diet was designed to meet energy requirements, and the low concentrate total mixed diet was designed to limit intake. Twenty-four Holstein-Friesian cows were offered the total mixed diets in a full 2 x 2 change-over design with control treatments. The changeover was at 153 d in milk (DIM). For the statistical analyses, two periods of 13 wk, one period before and one period after the changeover, were used. Dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, body weight, and body condition score were significantly greater for cows fed the high concentrate total mixed diet than for cows fed the low concentrate total mixed diet. Significant interactions between total mixed diet and period were observed for DMI and milk yield. However, no significant residual effects of changing from one total mixed diet to the other were observed. The interactions were due to substantially different slopes of DMI and milk yield relative to DIM for cows fed the two different total mixed diets. For cows fed the low concentrate total mixed diet, there was no effect of stage of lactation on DMI; the slope was 0. For cows fed the high concentrate total mixed diet, there was a significant decline in DMI as lactation progressed.  相似文献

Twenty Holstein-Friesian cows were assigned to one of four feeding groups throughout lactation in a full change-over experiment using two total mixed diets. The low concentrate total mixed diet contained 100 g of concentrate/kg of fresh matter, and the high concentrate total mixed diet contained 300 g of concentrate/kg of fresh matter. The remainder of the total mixed diet was grass silage. The two changeover groups switched total mixed diets at 153 d of lactation; the other two treatment groups remained on their assigned diets throughout lactation. For analysis of short-term feeding behavior, four periods of 3 wk each were identified. The midpoints of these periods were -102, -18, 18, and 102 d from the changeover. The concentrate content of the total mixed diet significantly affected dry matter intake and all short-term feeding behavior variables. Cows that consumed the high concentrate total mixed diet had fewer but longer visits to the feeders and ate more feed per visit than did cows consuming the low concentrate total mixed diet. With one exception, no significant effect of stage of lactation was detected for any of the short-term feeding behavior variables. Despite a highly significant decline in dry matter intake as lactation progressed for cows consuming the high concentrate total mixed diet, there were no interactions between total mixed diet and stage of lactation for any of the short-term feeding behavior variables. Large differences in feeding behavior were detected between cows consuming the same total mixed diet. These last two findings suggest that the use of short-term feeding behavior variables to predict daily intake is unlikely to be successful.  相似文献

Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows averaging 104 d of lactation were used in a trial with a split-plot design to evaluate the nutritive value of two silages, timothy grass or alfalfa, both treated with formic acid and stored in plastic bag silos. Silages were offered for ad libitum intake either alone or with 17 or 34% (dry matter basis) dry-rolled barley. Both silages contained similar amounts of acid detergent fiber (ADF) (27.5 and 26.7% for timothy grass and alfalfa, respectively). After 110 d of storage, alfalfa silage contained higher amounts of organic acids and NH3 N but had lower soluble N. Total dry matter intake (DMI) and silage DMI were similar between cows fed both silages. Increased barley proportion decreased silage DMI (19.2 to 14.2 kg/d). Apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter was unaffected by treatment. The digestibility of neutral detergent fiber and ADF was higher for the timothy grass silage than for alfalfa silage and was unaffected by the barley percentage added to either silage. Milk yield was lower (23.9 to 22.6 kg/d) for cows fed the highest proportion of barley. The 4% fat-corrected milk yield was unaffected by treatment. Percentages of fat, protein, and total solids in milk were higher for cows fed diets with the higher barley content. Milk fat and protein yields were similar among treatments. Urea in blood was lower for cows fed timothy grass silage than for cows fed alfalfa silage (4.68 vs. 6.23 mg/100 ml). These results suggest that timothy grass silage and alfalfa silage, when stored at a similar ADF content, have comparable nutritive value for midlactation cows.  相似文献

Eighteen multiparous Holstein cows in midlactation were used in a switchback design trial to evaluate the effect of chop length (3 or 30 mm) of timothy grass silage, containing less than 30% ADF and treated with formic acid, on DMI and cow performance. Within chop length, addition of NaHCO3 (2% of DMI) or the replacement of 30% of silage DM with juice-extracted grass pellets was also evaluated. Cows were fed a TMR composed of 90% silage and 10% concentrate. Silage preservation characteristics were not different between chop lengths. The DMI and apparent digestibility were similar among treatments. Yields of 4% FCM (24.9 vs. 22.7 kg/d), fat (1.03 vs. .93 kg/d), and protein (.83 vs .77 kg/d) were higher with the short chopped silage. Milk protein, milk NPN content, and serum urea were higher for cows fed long chopped silage. Yields of milk and milk constituents were not affected by the addition of juice-extracted grass pellets or NaHCO3. Fat percentage and fatty acid composition of milk remained unchanged by treatments. Reduction of particle size, from 30 to 3 mm, of timothy grass, treated with formic acid at harvest and using compaction at ensiling in bag silos, did not affect silage conservation characteristics but did improve milk, fat, and protein yields when cows were fed high silage diets.  相似文献

Six continuous culture fermenters were used in three experiments to study the effects of dietary starch and protein degradability combination, hay sources, and feeding frequency on fermentation by rumen microorganisms. Experiments 1 and 2 used a 3 x 2 factorial design in which six diets were formulated to contain low (LS), medium (MS), or high starch degradability (HS) in combination with low (LP) or high protein degradability (HP). The dietary combinations were (1) LS + HP, (2) LS + LP, (3) MS + HP, (4) MS + LP, (5) HS + HP, and (6) HS + LP. In experiment 1, pangola was used as the hay source, and in experiment 2, alfalfa hay was used. In experiment 3, two starch degradabilities (LS, MS) and two hay sources (alfalfa, A; pangola, P) were combined with two feeding frequencies (2 X/d, 12 X/d). The dietary combinations were (1) LS + A + 12 X/d, (2) MS + A + 12 X/d, (3) LS + A + 2 X/d, (4) MS + A + 2 X/d, (5) LS + P + 12 X/d, and (6) MS + P + 12 X/d. A CRD design was used for experiment 3. Two rumen-cannulated Holstein cows fed alfalfa hay ad lib were used as donors of rumen fluid for all experiments. Each period was 6 d in length, with 5 d for adaptation and 1 d for sampling. In experiments 1 and 2, the effects of starch degradability on the composition of rumen microorganisms were significant. The MS or HS with HP had the highest total bacterial and protozoal density (P < 0.05). As for VFA, pH and nitrogen products, the effects of starch and protein degradability were not significant. There was no interaction between starch and protein degradability on most of microbial composition (ammonia-N, microbial nitrogen). In experiment 3, 12 X/d feeding frequency (MS + A + 12 X/d vs. MS + A + 12 X/d) resulted in higher pH, which tended to increase bacterial and protozoal density and starch and protein digestibilities. Different hay sources altered the starch and protein synchronization effect on the ammonia-N concentration (mg/dl) and non-ammonia N content (% DM) in the continuous culture system.  相似文献

A case-control investigation of the risk factors for Salmonella dublin infections on 126 dairy farms identified the following variables as being significantly associated with infection: standardized farm size and presence of water courses. Contrary to expectations, contact with cattle from other farms when the animals were turned out to grass was negatively associated with S. dublin infection. The purchase of cattle from other farms was a risk factor. There were more infections when feed consisted of grass alone than when grass was supplemented with maize or grass silage. S. dublin infections were strongly correlated with liver fluke infections.  相似文献

Strains of Escherichia coli originally isolated from the rumen of sheep were shown to be capable of exchanging a 60kb plasmid, conferring resistance to tetracycline and ampicillin, at low frequencies (below 10(-6) per recipient) under anaerobic conditions in the presence of (a) autoclaved and clarified rumen fluid, (b) raw clarified rumen fluid, or (c) whole rumen fluid. Under anaerobic conditions the two rumen strains showed no inhibition of growth rate when 50 mmol l-1 volatile fatty acids were added to LB medium at pH 7, although significant inhibition resulted with 100 mmol l-1 VFA. The two rumen strains, and four strains from the pig gut, showed less inhibition of anaerobic growth by volatile fatty acids than did three laboratory strains examined for comparison. These findings indicate that plasmid transfer between certain E. coli strains can occur under conditions that closely simulate an anaerobic but environment.  相似文献
