Surviving a computer disaster

Most organisations are so reliant on their computing service that loss of real-time systems could have devastating effects. The first step to improving this situation is to identify what risks exist and how significant they are within the specific environment of the organisation. Disaster recovery plans can then by formulated in order to restore permanent computing service     

Limitations of computer models

The limitations of computer models in relation to fire risk are considered in very general terms. The vital importance of the appropriate use of a model and suitable interpretation of results is stressed. Further, the possible capacity of a model to assist in the gaining of qualitative insights is considered. Some general conclusions are drawn.     

Preparing specifications by computer

A marked increase in accuracy and efficiency has been achieved by the US Army Corps of Engineers with a computerised system for preparing specifications for its construction projects. Known as ‘Editspec’, the system simplifies the selection of design conditions taken from master guides, allows for updating or specification changes and finally automatically prints out the correct specification text for the complete project. Its operation is explained here by a member of the US Construction Egineering Research Laboratory, which devised the system.

In recent years we have seen a widespread concern among the general public about the architectural qualities of our cities. The urban designer already uses the computer to manage all sorts of information such as drawings, word processing, land use data, statistics etc; this raises the possibility of using computers for other types of work. The analysis and evaluation of urban design are to a very large extent based on visual data. Powerful computers are needed to manipulate visual data; the new and more powerful machines which are now being manufactured make it possible to handle such data quickly and efficiently.     

Fire detection in computer facilities

A recent fire in a computer center in Canberra, Australia, prompted an investigation of the installed smoke detection system. The opportunity was also taken to evaluate alternate detection equipment in the actual center under operational conditions. One device tested was VESDA, a new highly sensitive smoke detector developed in Australia for clean occupancies such as computer rooms and telephone exchanges. Details of the test program and the effects of high room airflows on all forms of detectors are presented. The effectiveness of VESDA in giving very early warning of fire is demonstrated.
