Eleven species of Caribbean marine algae (red, green, and brown) were investigated for their cholesterol content. All of them were found to contain this sterol. Consistent with previously reported results, all five red algae contained large quantities of cholesterol. However, the two brown algae and three of the four green algae in our study also contained significant quantities of cholesterol.  相似文献

The freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis was exposed to cadmium concentrations of 0, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 microgram liter-1. The influence of this highly toxic metal on various stages of reproduction (number of egg masses, number of eggs, embryo development, and hatching) was studied. Egg production ceased at 400 microgram Cd2+ liter-1 and hatching was reduced to 0.4% with 200 microgram liter-1 at 20 degreesC. The study revealed that embryo development was the most sensitive stage, the main anomalies observed depending on the Cd2+ concentration. At the highest concentration studied (400 microgram liter-1) the eggs were blocked in the first cleavage stage. At 100 and 200 microgram Cd2+ liter-1, development of the eggs was halted at various stages of embryogenesis (cleavage, gastrula, veliger, and prehatching) depending on their position in the egg masses. At concentrations of 25 to 100 microgram Cd2+ liter-1, development was slowed down and hatching occurred 5 to 15 days later than in the controls (controls hatched 12 to 13 days after laying). The results obtained demonstrate the effects of Cd2+ on reproduction and development in L. stagnalis and provide information on the targets affected (neuroendocrine control of laying or cell multiplication and organogenesis of the embryos). It is thus possible to predict the probability of survival of the species in an environment polluted with cadmium and to compare it with the effects of other pollutants in the same or other species.  相似文献

Despite the low concentrations of heavy metals in the surrounding medium, aquatic organisms take them up and accumulate them in their soft tissues to concentrations several fold higher than those of ambient levels (Bryan 1979; Rainbow et al. 1990). Knowledge of accumulation patterns of a particular trace metal is a prerequisite for understanding the significance of an observed metal concentration in a particular animal, especially from the aspect of biomonitoring. Many marine invertebrates accumulate heavy metals without any regulation and the accumulation necessarily being associated with mechanisms to store the metals in a detoxified form. Two detoxification mechanisms have been described, both of which may occur in one specimen. Heavy metals can either be bound up in insoluble metalliferous 'granules' (Mason and Nott 1981), or are bound to soluble metal-binding ligands, such as metallothioneins (Roesijadi 1992). Some marine decapod crustaceans have an innate ability to regulate the internal concentrations of essential but potentially toxic metals within a constant level, presumably to meet their metabolic demands (Rainbow 1985, 1992). However, at present, there is no such information relating to freshwater decapod crustaceans, especially shrimps which occupy a totally different environment. Macrobrachium malcolmsonii (Milne Edwards), a potential aquaculture species for freshwater is found in abundance in one of the major Indian rivers, the Cauvery. In the present study, an attempt was made to determine whether the freshwater prawn, M. malcolmsonii, is able to regulate the three essential elements, copper, chromium and zinc, over a wide range of dissolved concentrations. Although chlorate (ClO3?) is not a naturally occurring compound, chlorate can serve as an electron acceptor for a number of microorganisms. To investigate the rate that chlorate-reducing microbes can grow on different substrates, growth rate constants were determined in chemostat studies under chlorate-reducing conditions. Maximum growth rates using acetate, glucose-glutamic acid, and phenol were 0.56, 0.12, and 0.040 h?1, with cell yields of 0.12, 0.41, and 0.12 g-cell∕g-substrate, respectively.  相似文献

Queletox, containing fenthion as active ingredient, is the avicide formulation used in South Africa to control red-billed finches (Quelea quelea). Control measures involve night spraying of roosting areas with a light aircraft. Since roosting areas often include reedbeds along riversides and on islands, proper control is difficult without exposing the aquatic environment to some risk of contamination. This study tested the acute effects of fenthion, in association with the queletox formulation, on the cladocerans Daphnia pulex and Ceriodaphnia dubia and the fish species Poecilia reticulata, Tilapia rendalli, Cyprinus carpio, and Oreochromis mossambicus. The chronic effects of fenthion on D. pulex were evaluated in a 14-day reproduction test. Mean 48-hr LC50 values estimated for D. pulex and C. dubia were 1.30 and 1.72 micrograms liter-1 respectively. For the fish estimated 96-hr LC50 values were as follows: 2.12 (P. reticulata), 2.53 (C. carpio), 2.92 (T. rendalli) and 1.71 micrograms liter-1 (O. mossambicus). In the chronic test reproduction of the exposed population was stimulated at the lowest two fenthion concentrations (0.1 and 0.6 ng liter-1), while a reproductive impairment was recorded at concentrations varying from 1 to 10 ng liter-1. Concentrations of fenthion measured in dams after spraying are given to indicate the levels of contamination that may occur. QSAR was used to estimate the toxicity of some fenthion metabolites. The results of this study reveal that fenthion, at the concentrations occurring in the environment after aerial spraying, can have marked effects on the survival and reproduction of D. pulex for long periods after spraying.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation of trace elements in aquatic organisms can be described with a kinetic model that includes linear expressions for uptake and elimination from dissolved and dietary sources. Within this model, trace element trophic transfer is described by four parameters: the weight-specific ingestion rate (IR); the assimilation efficiency (AE); the physiological loss rate constant (ke); and the weight-specific growth rate (g). These four parameters define the trace element trophic transfer potential (TTP = IR.AE/[ke + g]) which is equal to the ratio of the steady-state trace element concentration in a consumer due to trophic accumulation to that in its prey. Recent work devoted to the quantification of AE and ke for a variety of trace elements in aquatic invertebrates has provided the data needed for comparative studies of trace element trophic transfer among different species and trophic levels and, in at least one group of aquatic consumers (marine bivalves), sensitivity analyses and field tests of kinetic bioaccumulation models. Analysis of the trophic transfer potentials of trace elements for which data are available in zooplankton, bivalves, and fish, suggests that slight variations in assimilation efficiency or elimination rate constant may determine whether or not some trace elements (Cd, Se, and Zn) are biomagnified. A linear, single-compartment model may not be appropriate for fish which, unlike many aquatic invertebrates, have a large mass of tissue in which the concentrations of most trace elements are subject to feedback regulation.  相似文献

The effect of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) pretreatment on subsequent treatment processes (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and ozonation) was studied at pilot-scale at the Upper San Leandro Water Treatment Plant near Oakland, Calif. Potential impacts of ClO2 on the distribution system were also studied at bench scale using simulated distribution system (SDS) tests. Pilot trials were conducted with one train operating without ClO2 pretreatment (Train 1) and the other with a ClO2 dose of between 0.6 and 1.0?mg/L (Train 2). Comparison between Trains 1 and 2 showed that ClO2 pretreatment resulted in a 0.1–0.2 NTU decrease in settled water turbidity when compared to no pretreatment. ClO2 pretreatment also resulted in a small (0.01?cm?1) decrease in ultraviolet absorbance at 254?nm. Following sedimentation, about 60% of the applied ClO2 formed chlorite (ClO2?), with 10–20% forming chlorate (ClO3?). Ozonation immediately converted all residual ClO2 and ClO2? to ClO3?. There was no significant difference in the performance of the filters between the two trains in terms of headloss, particle count, and turbidity. Bench-scale SDS tests indicated that chlorine dioxide preoxidation did not affect subsequent chloramine stability or concentrations of trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, or adsorbable organic halides in the distribution system.  相似文献

Since 1985, pathologists at Cornell University have investigated the causes of lesions in freshwater fish throughout New York waters in order to clarify possible impairment of fish health by environmental contaminants. Fishermen and biologists alerted us to several relatively protected reservoirs and ponds in which we have found no evidence of elevated levels of anthropogenic environmental contaminants but in which up to 100% of brown bullheads exhibited skin neoplasia. Complete necropsies and histologic study revealed that over 30% of mature brown bullheads from some of these sites had benign or malignant hepatocellular or biliary liver neoplasia. Up to 50% of brown bullheads had benign or malignant liver neoplasia in other relatively unpolluted waters with no evidence of skin neoplasia in bullheads. Multiple samplings of brown bullheads from several of these sites have revealed puzzling variability in the prevalence of skin, liver, and other neoplasia in these fish populations. The cause of these striking epizootics of neoplasia in brown bullheads in unpolluted waters in New York State remains unclear. We hypothesize that natural carcinogens such as N-nitroso compounds formed in aquatic sediments or radon from geologic formations may contribute to epizootic fish neoplasia in New York waters.  相似文献

Cholera has been long associated with the seasonality of coastal algal blooms off Bangladesh. Using fluorescent antibody (FA) techniques, microbiologists have now identified a viable, non-cultivable form of Vibrio cholerae in a wide range of marine life, including cyanobacteria (Anabaena variabilis), diatoms (Skeletonema costatum), phaeophytes (Ascophyllum nodosum), in copepod molts, and in freshwater vascular aquatic plants (water hyacinths and duckweed). In unfavourable conditions V. cholerae assumes spore-like forms; with proper nutrients, pH and temperature, it reverts to a readily transmissible and infectious state. Nitrates and phosphates in sewage and fertilizers cause eutrophication, and scientists report an increase in intensity, duration and shifts in the biodiversity of algal blooms in many coastal, brackish and fresh waters worldwide. V. cholerae has been isolated from phyto- and zooplankton in marine and fresh waters near Lima, Peru. V. cholera 01, biotype El Tor, serotype Inaba, may have arrived in the Americas in the bilge of a Chinese freighter. There, in the abundant coastal sea life along the Latin American Pacific coast, nourished by the Humboldt current and eutrophication, it found a reservoir for surviving unfavourable conditions. It is hypothesized that the algae and Vibrio populations grew exponentially; consumed by fish, mollusks and crustacea, a heavy 'inoculum' of carriers infected with V. cholerae was generated and transported into multiple coastal communities.  相似文献

Brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) is a native fish of the rivers of northern Spain. It is the dominant fish species in these rivers, and it is widespread over all the range of freshwater ecosystems in the area, including ecosystems potentially polluted with heavy metals. In this study, the potential of brown trout as biomonitor of heavy metal pollution and the effect of fish age on the reliability of the assessment are analyzed. Copper, lead, and cadmium concentrations of both abiotic compartments (water and sediments) and brown trout (S. trutta) from three northern Spanish rivers were analyzed. Significant correlations were found between sediment lead content and lead concentration in trout liver. One-year-old juvenile trouts were demonstrated to be useful as a biomonitor of copper and lead pollution, revealing between-location differences. Older trouts do not seem adequate to properly monitor heavy metal pollution. The effect of aging on the reliability of this species as biomonitor is discussed.  相似文献

In an ongoing survey of the bioactive potential of microorganisms associated with marine invertebrates, the culture media of a sponge-associated bacterial strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to contain metabolites which inhibit the growth of several Gram-positive microorganisms. A series of diketopiperazines (1-6) including a new natural product (6) and two known phenazine alkaloid antibiotics (7 and 8) were isolated from the culture broth of this bacterium.  相似文献

The stress response in teleost fish shows many similarities to that of the terrestrial vertebrates. These concern the principal messengers of the brain-sympathetic-chromaffin cell axis (equivalent of the brain-sympathetic-adrenal medulla axis) and the brain-pituitary-interrenal axis (equivalent of the brain-pituitary-adrenal axis), as well as their functions, involving stimulation of oxygen uptake and transfer, mobilization of energy substrates, reallocation of energy away from growth and reproduction, and mainly suppressive effects on immune functions. There is also growing evidence for intensive interaction between the neuroendocrine system and the immune system in fish. Conspicuous differences, however, are present, and these are primarily related to the aquatic environment of fishes. For example, stressors increase the permeability of the surface epithelia, including the gills, to water and ions, and thus induce systemic hydromineral disturbances. High circulating catecholamine levels as well as structural damage to the gills and perhaps the skin are prime causal factors. This is associated with increased cellular turnover in these organs. In fish, cortisol combines glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid actions, with the latter being essential for the restoration of hydromineral homeostasis, in concert with hormones such as prolactin (in freshwater) and growth hormone (in seawater). Toxic stressors are part of the stress literature in fish more so than in mammals. This is mainly related to the fact that fish are exposed to aquatic pollutants via the extensive and delicate respiratory surface of the gills and, in seawater, also via drinking. The high bioavailability of many chemicals in water is an additional factor. Together with the variety of highly sensitive perceptive mechanisms in the integument, this may explain why so many pollutants evoke an integrated stress response in fish in addition to their toxic effects at the cell and tissue levels. Exposure to chemicals may also directly compromise the stress response by interfering with specific neuroendocrine control mechanisms. Because hydromineral disturbance is inherent to stress in fish, external factors such as water pH, mineral composition, and ionic calcium levels have a significant impact on stressor intensity. Although the species studied comprise a small and nonrepresentative sample of the almost 20,000 known teleost species, there are many indications that the stress response is variable and flexible in fish, in line with the great diversity of adaptations that enable these animals to live in a large variety of aquatic habitats.  相似文献

Organochlorine (OC) concentrations in surface sediment, snails (Lymnea sp.), and two freshwater fish species (grayling, Thymallus arcticus; and lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush) from four lakes in the US Arctic were determined. In surface sediment, chlorinated benzenes (including hexachlorobenzene, HCB), and p,p'-DDT were the primary analytes detected (max = 0.7 ng/g dry wt), while individual polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were always below 0.1 ng/g. A wider range of compounds and higher concentrations were found in lake trout, the top predatory fish species in the same lakes. The concentration ranges for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), chlordane-related compounds (CHLORs), DDTs, and PCBs in lake trout and grayling were similar to those reported for other arctic freshwater fish (1-100 ng/g wet wt), but one to two orders of magnitude lower than Great Lakes salmonids. Nitrogen isotope analysis confirmed that differences in OC concentrations between grayling and lake trout are explained partly by differences in food web position.  相似文献

By using gas-liquid chromatography the content of organic mercury compounds (methyl- and ethyl derivatives) in some widely consumed in alimentation fish species and marine products was determined. Methyl mercury was found in 96.2 per cent of a total of 104 samples. The average level of its content in the fish species under study was dissimilar, viz. in cod fish--0.045 + .0053 mg/kg. in sea perch--0.021 +/- 0.0029 mg/kg; in sprat--0.0050 +/- 0.0013 mg/kg. In marine products (crustacea, sea crayfish, shrimps) the percentage of the methyl mercury detection comprised 100, 60 and 85, respectively and the contamination level did not exceed 0.0520 mg/kg. Ethyl mercury was found in 33--35 per cent of 40 samples of shrimps and crustacea and in 13.6 per cent of fish subjected to analysis. From the above data the amount of methyl mercury introduced with a diurnal portion of fish was estamated at 0.9--5.0 psi per man-day.  相似文献

Crude oil spillage is a major environmental pollution in the Niger–Delta area of Nigeria. The use of recycled rubber from enormous available scrap tires for pollution control of oil-polluted fresh and marine water and the attendant survival of aquatic organisms (fish) in these polluted waters was investigated. The absorption capacity of rubber particles for the oil was the same in both the oil-polluted fresh and marine waters and depended on the rubber particle size and temperature of absorption. The survival time of the fish depended on the amount of rubber added to and the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the oil-polluted waters. The survival time increased from 3.5 to 7.25?h as the rubber to oil ratio was increased from 0.5 to 2.5. At a ratio of 3, the oil film on the water was no longer continuous and the survival time increased to 6,000?h. The survival time increased with the DO concentration in polluted water. In the absence of added rubber particles, the DO concentration decreased within 2?h from 5.27?mg/L to less than 3?mg/L, a value below the limit required for aquatic organism survival.  相似文献

Disinfectants called by producers stabilized chlorine dioxide (ClO2) are most often composed of sodium carbonate aqueous solution and ClO2. Stability is due to sodium chlorate which is produced under these conditions. Solutions of active ClO2 obtained through acidification of the preparation with citric acid and an appropriate water dilution are used in disinfection. Then, free ClO2 becomes an active disinfecting factor--a gas of strong irritative properties. During a disinfecting process the gas is liberated from the solution due to pulverization and dryness of disinfected objects. The study indicated that the safety of work with disinfectants requires mechanical ventilation of working premises. The transformation of stabile ClO2 into an active form should be induced by adding an appropriate volume of the stabilising preparation to citric acid solution. Such a procedure assures that a maximum of gaseous ClO2 will be retained in water.  相似文献

Increasing evidence suggests that the use of a single bioassay will never provide a full picture of the quality of the environment. Only a test battery, composed of bioassays of different animal and plant species from different trophic levels will reduce uncertainty, allowing an accurate assessment of the quality of the environment. In the present study, a test battery composed of 20 bioassays of varying biological endpoints has been compared. Apart from lethality and reproductive failure in earthworms, springtails, nematoda, algae and vascular plants, these endpoints also included bioavailibility of metals (bacteria), heat-shock induction (nematodes, algae), DNA damage (bacteria, earthworm, vascular plants), beta-galactosidase (Daphnia) and esterase activity (algae) and a range of immunological parameters (earthworm). Four chemicals (cadmium, phenol, pentachlorophenol and trifluralin)--each representing a different toxic mode of action--were applied in a dilution series (from 1 mg/kg up to 1000 mg/kg) onto OECD standard soil. The tests have been performed both on these artificially contaminated soil samples and on aqueous extracts subsequently obtained from these soils. The results show that the immunological parameters and the loss of weight in the earthworms were among the most sensitive solid-phase assays. Esterase inhibition and heat-shock induction in algae were shown to be extremely sensitive when applied to soil extracts. As previously shown at the species level, no single biological endpoint was shown to be the most sensitive for all four modes of toxic action.  相似文献

Total mercury concentration in the muscle of 417 fish of 12 common freshwater and four anadromous species from Bangladesh were low, varying from 2 to 430 ng/g fresh wt. Depending on Hg speciation, three types of accumulation mechanisms were defined. Type I covers the majority of species and describes a pattern widely accepted as 'normal', with increasing levels of organic (methyl) mercury with length (age), combined to a low and constant inorganic level. This accumulation pattern leads to a relative increase of the organic mercury fraction with age, eventually reaching 90-100% of organic mercury in full grown specimens. Type II is found in both planktivorous genera only and showed increasing levels of inorganic mercury combined to low and constant organic mercury levels, leading to a relative decrease in organic mercury fraction with age. This unexpected pattern was only reported in cases of some marine species where it seemed to be linked to demethylation mechanisms or regional influences on Hg levels. A third intermediate accumulation pattern with increasing concentrations of both the organic and the inorganic Hg fraction with age was found in one bottom dwelling species only. The implications of these observations for the accumulation mechanisms of mercury in fish are discussed.  相似文献

Plasma prolactin levels were measured in free-living breeding adult and immature (pre-breeding) macaroni (Eudyptes chrysolophus) and gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) penguins at Bird Island, South Georgia (54 degrees S, 38 degrees W). Macaroni and gentoo penguins first breed at 5-6 and 2 years of age, respectively. In adult birds, of both species, prolactin was low (< 1.0 microgram. liter-1) during the courtship period and then increased during early (gentoo) to mid (macaroni) incubation (to 3.9-4.7 and 2.4-3.5 micrograms.liter-1, respectively), remaining elevated until the creche period, by which time continuous nest attendance by the adults had ceased. This pattern is similar to that seen in other altricial species and is consistent with delayed onset of brood patch development and full incubation efficiency, which has been previously reported in penguins. Adult female macaroni penguins showed a marked, but transient, increase in prolactin concentrations within 24 hr of the first egg being laid (from 1.7 to 7.0 micrograms.liter-1), plasma levels decreasing following clutch completion (to prelaying levels) before increasing again during incubation. Elevated plasma prolactin levels occurred in all age classes of immature (nonbreeding) birds in both macaroni (1- to 5 year-olds) and gentoo (1-year-olds) penguins. However, compared to that in adult birds, the increase in prolactin was more transient in immatures, a smaller proportion of immatures had detectable prolactin levels at each stage of the breeding cycle, and, at least in 1- and 2-year-olds, absolute levels of prolactin were lower.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Persistent viruses occur intracellularly in brown algae, specifically the Ectocarpales, and as reported here in the genus Feldmannia. Feldmannia species are small (1 mm-several cm), filamentous forms with single-celled meiotic sporangia that normally produce haploid zoospores. In the isolate reported here, spores were not observed in the sporangia but rather numerous (approximately 10(6) per cell) polyhedral viruses are formed in their place. Two dsDNA genome classes of 158 and 178 kbp, with two restriction site variants of each, are described. The individual abundance of each genome in viral preparations is affected by culture temperature. A cosmid library was used to generate circular restriction enzyme (BamHi, Noti, and Psti) site maps.  相似文献
