Younger adults tend to remember negative information better than positive or neutral information (negativity bias). The negativity bias is reduced in aging, with older adults occasionally exhibiting superior memory for positive, as opposed to negative or neutral, information (positivity bias). Two experiments with younger (N = 24 in Experiment 1, N = 25 in Experiment 2; age range: 18?35 years) and older adults (N = 24 in both experiments; age range: 60?85 years) investigated the cognitive mechanisms responsible for age-related differences in recognition memory for emotional information. Results from diffusion model analyses (R. Ratcliff, 1978) indicated that the effects of valence on response bias were similar in both age groups but that Age × Valence interactions emerged in memory retrieval. Specifically, older adults experienced greater overall familiarity for positive items than younger adults. We interpret this finding in terms of an age-related increase in the accessibility of positive information in long-term memory. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: to observe the influence of aging on urinary secretion of 3-hydroxyproline (3-Hyp) in normal subjects and in cancer patients and study the effects of aging on the accuracy of urinary 3-Hyp as a general-purpose cancer screening test. DESIGN: We reanalyzed, from the aspect of gerontology, the amounts of 3-Hyp in the urine samples of the 211 healthy persons and 94 patients with cancer reported earlier. The two groups were divided in 3 age subgroups: adult, 30 to 44 years, middle-aged, 45 to 64 years, and aged, 65 years and older. The cancer stage was separated into 3 categories: stage 1, the early stage without any invasion, stage 2, locally invasive with no distant metastasis, and stage 3, advanced cancer. The correlation of age and urinary 3-Hyp was analyzed in normal subjects and cancer patients. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for different cutoff points in the diverse groups to construct the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. MAIN RESULTS: We observed that aging decreases the urinary secretion of 3-Hyp in normal subjects, with a correlation coefficient of -0.250 (p < 0.001). The mean levels of urinary 3-Hyp in patients with cancer were significantly higher than in the normal subjects, p = 0.005. The correlation coefficient of urinary 3-Hyp and age was not significant (0.100) in cancer patients. The cutoff points of 0.800 mg/g creatinine of urinary 3-Hyp for persons under 65 years of age and 0.600 mg/g creatinine for persons 65 years or older were the best thresholds for cancer screening. In the ROC analyses, we observed that 3-Hyp has higher accuracy for cancer screening in the aged group for all stages together and in the aged and middle-aged for early stages of cancer. CONCLUSIONS: The urinary 3-Hyp test was more effective for cancer screening in old persons (65 years or older), where cancer is more frequent and more difficult to discover. The authors stress the necessity and importance of verifying the effectiveness of urinary 3-Hyp for general cancer screening in a larger population and in a community set.  相似文献

An investigation of the stability of median and Q values computed from graphically derived and from sorted judgments used in attitude scaling by the method of equal-appearing intervals. One group of Ss (N = 42) judged 135 statements using a 9-point graphic continuum. A 2nd group (N = 42) sorted the identical sequence of statements presented as a card deck into 9 piles. Graphic judgments tended to yield higher Q values than sorts for relatively unambiguous items. Correlations expressing confluence of final decision regarding specific items were .99, .74, and .53 when "acceptable" Q values were below 2.0, 1.7, and 1.5, respectively. The medians derived from the 2 procedures correlated .97. These findings were interpreted in the light of a presumed heightened focusing effect of the sorting procedure for making judgments. We conducted a questionnaire survey on life styles and health status for 293 patients with Hansen's disease. They were admitted to the wards for disabled and physically able patients of Ohshima Seishoen, in Kagawa prefecture, in 1991. This institution is one of Japan's national leprosy sanitarians. We measured patients' life satisfaction with the Delighted-Terrible Scale. In this report, the distribution of life satisfaction and its associated factors were examined for 210(71.7%) respondents. Factors examined were length of treatment, physical health, and social aspects of life at the sanatorium. The major findings were as follows; 1. The patients aged under 60 had lower proportions of being satisfied with life than those aged 60 or older. The proportions of life satisfaction of the 40-59 age group were 17% for men and 22% for women, while for the 60 or older age groups were 33-44% for men and 41-45% for women. The proportions of life satisfaction in the 60 or older age groups were lower than those of community dwelling elderly persons. 2. We examined factors associated with life satisfaction for the respondents aged 60 or older. Dependence on activities of daily living (ADL) was associated with life satisfaction in some ADL items. Care and aid provided by the staff of the sanatorium may modify the relationship between ADL impairment and life satisfaction. For social aspects of life at the sanatorium, both having networks with family members and having resources other than family were associated with life satisfaction. Going out and positively spending their daily lives were associated with life satisfaction, too. These associations were significant for men. Similar patterns of association were observed for women, but were insignificant. This finding suggests that it is important for the health and medical care staff to pay attention to the social aspects of the life of elderly patients with Hansen's disease.  相似文献

The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for Children (PANAS-C) is a 27-item youth-report measure of positive affectivity and negative affectivity. Using 2 large school-age youth samples (clinic-referred sample: N = 662; school-based sample: N = 911), in the present study, we thoroughly examined the structure of the PANAS-C NA and PA scales and fit a bifactor model to the PANAS-C NA items. Our exploratory factor analytic results demonstrated that negative affectivity is comprised of 2 main components—NA: Fear and NA: Distress—specifically among older youth. A bifactor model also evidenced the best model fit relative to a unidimensional and second-order factor structure of the PANAS-C NA items. The NA: Fear group factor evidenced significant correspondence with external criterion measures of anxiety. However, the original PANAS-C NA scale evidenced equal (and in some cases greater) correspondence with criterion measures of anxiety. We thus recommend continued usage and interpretation of the full PANAS-C NA scale despite the identification of the fear and distress group factors underlying general negative affectivity. The identification of these fear and distress group factors nonetheless suggest that negative affectivity may be comprised largely of a fear and distress component among older youth. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to better understanding the structure of psychopathology across childhood development and informing the development of future treatments of negative emotions. The goal of this article is to examine differential aging in everyday functioning between resource-rich and resource-poor older adults. Four groups of older adults were identified on the basis of 2 distinct resource factors: a Sensorimotor-Cognitive factor and a Social-Personality factor. The resource-richest group consisted of those participants who were above the median in both factors; those falling below the median in both factors comprised the resource-poorest group; and 2 additional groups consisted of older adults who were above the median in either 1 of the 2 factors. At the level of mean differences, the 4 groups differed in the length of the waking day, the variability in activities, the frequency of intellectual-cultural and social-relational activities, and resting times. Considering age differences there are more and larger negative age effects in the resource-poorest group than in the resource-richest one. The metamodel of selective optimization with compensation is used to interpret the findings. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Selecting what is important to remember, attending to this information, and then later recalling it can be thought of in terms of the strategic control of attention and the efficient use of memory. To examine whether aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) influenced this ability, the present study used a selectivity task, where studied items were worth various point values and participants were asked to maximize the value of the items they recalled. Relative to younger adults (N = 35) and healthy older adults (N = 109), individuals with very mild AD (N = 41), and mild AD (N = 13) showed impairments in the strategic and efficient encoding and recall of high value items. Although individuals with AD recalled more high value items than low value items, they did not efficiently maximize memory performance (as measured by a selectivity index) relative to healthy older adults. Performance on complex working memory span tasks was related to the recall of the high value items but not low value items. This pattern suggests that relative to healthy aging, AD leads to impairments in strategic control at encoding and value-directed remembering. Objective: The overlap of somatic-depressive symptoms and physical sequelae of spinal cord injury (SCI) has raised concerns regarding the validity of depression screens used within the SCI population. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) measure parallels Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.; DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) criteria of major depression. The authors investigated PHQ-9 factor structure among persons with SCI at various times postinjury. Design: Data from 2,570 participants at 1 year (N = 682), 5 years (N = 517), 15 years (N = 653), and 25 years (N = 718) postinjury were used. Emergent factors were correlated with satisfaction with life. Results: A 2-factor solution emerged for all groups, with 3 affective referenced items (feeling depressed/hopeless, feeling bad about self/failure, and suicidal ideation) and 3 somatic referenced items (sleep disturbance, low energy/fatigue, and appetite disturbance) loading consistently on Affective and Somatic factors, respectively, at all time points. Factor scores negatively correlated with satisfaction with life. Conclusions: Dual factor structure of the PHQ-9 is present at various times postinjury in the SCI population. It remains unclear whether somatic item endorsement reflects depressive symptomatology per se; however, endorsement is still associated with satisfaction with life. This study examined the effects of text genre and repeated reading on written language comprehension in younger (M = 21 years) and older (M = 72 years) healthy adults (N = 54). Participants verified four text-based statements (i.e., explicit, implicit, contradictory, and elaborated) after reading expository, narrative, and procedural texts. Verification accuracy was comparable for both age groups; however, text genre, statement-type, and repeated reading produced significant effects. Expository passages, explicit and implicit statements, and repeated reading yielded superior results. Procedural passages and contradictory and elaborated statements yielded less accurate results. Statement-types invoked multiple levels of cognitive representation across text genres and age groups. Overall, reading time was significantly faster for younger adults, and reading times were significantly faster for both age groups during the repeated reading trial. Text genre also influenced reading time, with expository passages read faster than narrative and procedural passages. These findings suggest the appreciable influences of text genre and repeated reading on measures of text processing and comprehension in healthy adults, irrespective of age.  相似文献

This study explores whether negative stereotypes about aging contribute to memory loss in old age. The research participants consisted of old and young Chinese hearing, American Deaf, and American hearing individuals. Members of the mainland Chinese and the American Deaf cultures were recruited on the basis of the belief that they would be less likely than hearing Americans to be exposed to and accept negative stereotypes about aging. The expected results were (1) an interaction in which the 3 groups of younger Ss would perform similarly on the memory tasks, whereas the older Deaf and older Chinese participants would outperform the older American hearing group and (2) a positive correlation between view toward aging and memory performance among the old Ss. The data supported both hypotheses. The results suggest that cultural beliefs about aging play a role in determining the degree of memory loss people experience in old age. This study describes the development and validation of a decisional balance scale for marijuana use in young adults. Scale development was accomplished in four phases. First, 53 participants (70% female, 68% freshman) provided qualitative data that yielded content for an initial set of 47 items. In the second phase, an exploratory factor analysis on the responses of 260 participants (52% female, 68% freshman) revealed two factors, corresponding to pros and cons. Items that did not load well on the factors were omitted, resulting in a reduced set of 36 items. In the third phase, 182 participants (49% female, 37% freshmen) completed the revised scale and an evaluation of factor structure led to scale revisions and model respecification to create a good-fitting model. The final scales consisted of 8 pros (α = 0.91) and 16 cons (α = 0.93), and showed evidence of validity. In the fourth phase (N = 248, 66% female, 70% freshman), we confirmed the factor structure, and provided further evidence for reliability and validity. The Marijuana Decisional Balance Scale enhances our ability to study motivational factors associated with marijuana use among young adults. Data quality is compromised when response rates to items vary with age group. D. Shmotkin (1992) found a 29% nonresponse rate to future-oriented items in persons older than 60 yrs and suggested future apprehension as a cause. The authors administered similar items to 251 older Ss and found fewer instances of nonresponding to future-oriented items. On the basis of the high response rate to an enlarged Cantril ladder measuring future quality of life, presented in interview, the authors question the generality of future apprehension as a determinant of nonresponding. The authors suggest that mode of administration, size of items, and scale complexity, as well as future apprehension, are determinants of nonresponding to future-oriented items and scales. Objective: Evaluate the utility of the current 7-scale structure of the Life Situation Questionnaire—Revised (LSQ–R) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and explore the factor structure of each set of items. Design: Adults (N = 1,543) with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) were administered the 20 satisfaction and 30 problems items from the LSQ–R. Results: CFA suggests that the existing 7-scale structure across the 50 items was within the acceptable range (root-mean-square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.078), although it fell just outside of this range for women. Factor analysis revealed 3 satisfaction factors and 6 problems factors. The overall fit of the problems items (RMSEA = 0.070) was superior to that of the satisfaction items (RMSEA = 0.80). RMSEA fell just outside of the acceptable range for Whites and men on the satisfaction scales. All scales had acceptable internal consistency. Conclusion: Results suggest the original scoring of the LSQ–R remains viable, although individual results should be reviewed for special population. Factor analysis of subsets of items allows satisfaction and problems items to be used independently, depending on the study purpose. Age differences in accuracy were investigated by having older (M = 68.6 years) and younger (M = 21.5 years) adults make confidence judgments about the correctness of their responses to two sets of general knowledge items. For one set, prior to making their confidence judgments, subjects made mental strategy judgements indicating how they had selected their answers (i.e., they guessed, used intuition, made an inference, or immediately recognized the response as correct). Results indicate that older subjects were more accurate than younger subjects in predicting the correctness of their responses; however, making mental strategy judgments did not result in increased accuracy for either age group. Additional analyses explored the relationship between accuracy and other individual difference variables. The results of this investigation are consistent with recent theories of postformal cognitive development that suggest older adults have greater insight into the limitations of their knowledge.  相似文献

ERPs to target stimulation with tone, picture and characters of Chinese words ([symbol: see text] CCW were target stimulus) were studied in adolescents group and aged persons group. The age of the adolescent group ranged from 15-17 years, with 30 males and 30 females; the age of the elderly persons group ranged from 60-79 years with 29 males and 18 females. The latencies of N2 of aged persons in tone stimulus and in picture stimulus among males were longer than those of adolescents. The latencies of P3 and RT of aged persons were longer than those of adolescents in three stimulus models. The gender differences of latencies of N2 and RT were not obvious in two groups, but were apparent in P3 in adolescents. The latencies of N2, P3 and RT of CCW stimulus were longer compared to those of picture stimulus in the adolescent group, but not in the aged persons group.  相似文献

The Xe-133 clearance method is used to measure muscle blood flow in the lower limbs to establish normal values and evaluate the variance between different sex and age groups in healthy Chinese. 99 healthy volunteers were included in this study and divided into three groups according to age and two groups according to sex. Group I: < 40 y/o, 34 persons; Group II: 41-60 y/o, 30 persons; Group III: > 60 y/o, 35 persons; male group: 51 persons; and female group: 48 persons. Intramuscular injection of Xe-133 saline solution in the anterior tibial muscle of the right leg was performed in all the volunteers to calculate muscle blood flow. The muscle blood flow is 3.21 +/- 1.29 ml/100 gm/min in Group I, 3.19 +/- 1.28 in Group II, 2.71 +/- 1.17 in Group III, 3.09 +/- 1.38 in male, and 2.96 +/- 1.24 in female. There was no significant difference in Groups I and II, or in the male and female groups using the Student's t test for unpaired data. However, a mild difference was observed between Groups I and III, and between Groups II and III (P values of 0.09 and 0.11 respectively). We conclude that there is no variance of muscle blood flow in the lower limbs between different sexes and the effect of aging on peripheral muscle blood flow is not significant before 60 in healthy Chinese.  相似文献

Age-related deficits in selective attention have often been demonstrated in the visual modality and, to a lesser extent, in the auditory modality. In contrast, a mounting body of evidence has suggested that cross-modal selective attention is intact in aging, especially in visual tasks that require ignoring the auditory modality. Our goal in this study was to investigate age-related differences in the ability to ignore cross-modal auditory and visual distraction and to assess the role of cognitive control demands thereby. In a set of two experiments, 30 young (mean age = 23.3 years) and 30 older adults (mean age = 67.7 years) performed a visual and an auditory n-back task (0 ≤ n ≤ 2), with and without cross-modal distraction. The results show an asymmetry in cross-modal distraction as a function of sensory modality and age: Whereas auditory distraction did not disrupt performance on the visual task in either age group, visual distraction disrupted performance on the auditory task in both age groups. Most important, however, visual distraction was disproportionately larger in older adults. These results suggest that age-related distraction is modality dependent, such that suppression of cross-modal auditory distraction is preserved and suppression of cross-modal visual distraction is impaired in aging. OBJECTIVE: The authors reviewed renal transplant outcomes in recipients 60 years of age or older. BACKGROUND: Before cyclosporine, patients older than 45 years of age were considered to be at high risk for transplantation. With cyclosporine, the age limits for transplantation have expanded. METHODS: The authors compared patient and graft survival, hospital stay, the incidence of rejection and rehospitalization, and the cause of graft loss for primary kidney recipients 60 years of age or older versus those 18 to 59 years of age. For those patients > or = 60 years transplanted since 1985, the authors analyzed pretransplant extrarenal disease and its impact on post-transplant outcome. In addition, all surviving recipients > or = 60 years completed a medical outcome survey (SF-36). RESULTS: Patient and graft survival for those > or = 60 years of age versus those 18 to 59 years of age were similar 3 years after transplant. Subsequently, mortality increased for the older recipients. Death-censored graft survival was identical in the two groups. There were no differences in the cause of graft loss. Those 60 years of age or older had a longer initial hospitalization, but had fewer rejection episodes and fewer rehospitalizations. Quality of life for recipients 60 years of age or older was similar to the age-matched U.S. population. CONCLUSION: Renal transplantation is successful for recipients 60 years of age or older. Most of them had extrarenal disease at the time of transplantation; however, extrarenal disease was not an important predictor of outcome and should not be used as an exclusion criterion. Post-transplant quality of life is excellent.  相似文献
