The Navy conducted a multi-laboratory study to investigate ways in which machine-based technology can provide intelligent decision support to Navy battle management. A key result from this study is that a need exists to develop generic AI decision support development tools for battle management. OBJECTIVE: To better understand how human error contributes to U.S. Navy diving accidents. BACKGROUND: An analysis of 263 U.S. Navy diving accident and mishap reports revealed that the human factors classifications were not informative for further analysis, and 70% of mishaps were attributed to unknown causes; only 23% were attributed to human factors. METHOD: Five diving fatality reports were examined using the consensual qualitative research (CQR) method to develop a taxonomy of six categories and 21 subcategories for classifying human errors in diving. In addition, 15 critical incident technique (CIT) interviews were conducted with U.S. Navy divers who had been involved in a diving accident or near miss and analyzed using the dive team error taxonomy. RESULTS: Overall, failures in situation awareness and leadership were the most common human errors made by the dive team. CONCLUSION: The dive team human error taxonomy could aid in accident investigation and in the training and evaluation of U.S. Navy divers. APPLICATION: The development of the dive team human error taxonomy has generated a number of considerations that researchers should take into account when developing, or adapting, an error taxonomy from one industry to another.  相似文献

This article describes an ongoing project in representing knowledge about Navy tactical computer systems. The primary concern is for their continuing evolution and/or integration with other tactical systems. Following an introduction to this class of application and a review of how the Naval Surface Warfare Center is addressing the issue of extending the investment in these systems, the software process is examined and two alternative, incompatible paradigms are presented. The latter, which relies on the use of software knowledge, is described briefly, and an environment that implements this paradigm is presented as a proof of concept. The need to train people for increasingly complex tasks given diminishing budgets makes simulation-based training attractive in both the commercial and military sectors. Training systems that use virtual environment (VE) technology are potentially both reconfigurable and portable. The same equipment could provide a wide range of simulations at or near the trainees' worksite, letting them train close to home. To explore the potential of VE technology for naval training, the US Navy is sponsoring the Virtual Environment Technology for Training (VETT) program at three Boston sites. The VETT program experiments with VE systems employing visual and audio feedback and haptic interaction (i.e. tactile and kinesthetic/force interactions). The experiments extend from basic research into human psychophysics to the development of human/machine interfaces and computational systems, and applied training. The goal of integrating basic and applied research in this way is to determine the advantages and limitations of VE technology for training. The quality of responses on computer and paper surveys was examined using 247 Navy recruits randomly assigned to a 2 (anonymous/identified) × 3 (administration modes: paper, computer-nonlinked, computer-linked) design. The computer-linked condition was included to simulate the ‘Big Brother Syndrome’ alluded to but not studied in past research. Higher levels of impression management were found in the identified computer-linked condition. It was concluded that perceiving that one's responses are linked to a larger database may lead to more impression management on computer surveys.  相似文献

Using virtual environments for training and mission rehearsal gives US Navy firefighters an edge in fighting real fires. A test run on the ex-USS Shadwell measured the improvement. The results suggest that virtual environments serve effectively for training and mission rehearsal for shipboard firefighting. VE training provides a flexible environment where a firefighter can not only learn an unfamiliar part of the ship, but also practice tactics and procedures for fighting a fire by interacting with simulated smoke and fire without risking lives or property. These tests proved a successful first step in developing a new training technology for shipboard firefighting based on immersive virtual environments. The tests also indicated potential areas for improvement, requiring additional research. User interaction techniques for manipulating objects in VEs need further study, along with usability studies to determine their effectiveness or utility. Other areas that could enhance VE training systems include more natural and intuitive I/O devices such as 3D sound, speech and natural language input, integrated multimedia and hypermedia instruction, and multi user interaction  相似文献

CEDAR3 has been installed in two design offices of the UK Department of Environment (Property Services Agency). Architects, services engineers and quantity surveyors have used the system for long periods and tested it on real projects of many building types at the outline design stage.Projects ranging from a computer centre to a Royal Navy barracks complex are discussed, together with users reactions to CEDAR. The management of engineering information to ensure that the right information is quickly provided to the right place at the right time in the right format is one of the most critical tasks in the engineering process. Within the practice of allied concurrent engineering, the importance and difficulty of engineering information management is increased due to the issues of inter-enterprise communication and process control, system heterogeneity, information and system security, differing engineering data formats and multi-database formats. This paper presents an engineering information management approach for the practice of allied concurrent engineering (ACE). An ACE-based engineering information management methodology is proposed under the concept of enterprise integration. This methodology includes an information management life cycle, a distributed management framework, and rules and methods for information management. Based on this methodology, an ACE-based engineering information system was developed using Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling techniques. The result of this research will enable the practice of allied concurrent engineering and consequently help increase product development capability and quality, reduce development cycle time and cost, and hence increase product marketability.  相似文献

Using customer relationship management (CRM) techniques, companies target market to their customers on an individualized basis. A variation on the CRM theme is employee relationship management (ERM), in which a company uses Web-based personalization techniques to develop a more effective relationship with its employees. This article reports some of the findings for a study sponsored by the U.S. Navy to determine how personalization can be used for a Web portal with the objective of boosting sailor morale and retention. IntroductionWork-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are the major causes of lost workdays, increased costs, and occupational diseases in all countries. The prevalence of WMSDs among the workers in small and medium-sized enterprises in Iran was reported as 73%. This paper aimed to describe the design of an interventional study to investigate the effects of ergonomic interventions on work-related musculoskeletal disorders, quality of work-life, and productivity among office workers of knowledge-based companies and introduce the results obtained from the baseline survey.Methods/designIt was a quasi-randomized control trial study on 313 participants with four parallel groups including ergonomic training intervention; management training and work changes intervention; ergonomic training, management training and work changes intervention; and non-interventional control group. The primary outcome was WMSDs, and the secondary outcomes were occupational stress factors, quality of work-life, and productivity. All primary and secondary outcomes were measured before the interventions, one, three, and six months after the interventions.ResultsAt this phase of study only baseline results were reported. 328 participants, with a mean age of 31.97 years (SD = 5.39), completed the baseline survey and entered the study. The highest prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was found in neck (52.13%), right shoulder (41.16%) and right forearm (37.2%), respectively.ConclusionErgonomic interventions were conducted based on baseline data of the participants at individual and management levels. The focus of training program interventions was to reduce musculoskeletal disorders in upper limbs; in management training and work changes program, the focus was to increase social support.Trial registrationIRCT registration number: IRCT20181204041840N1 (date of registration: 2019-02-05).  相似文献
