Effect of turbulent jet ignition induced by pre-chamber sparkplug (PCSP), a simper version of turbulent jet ignition pre-chamber system without fuel injection, on the air-hydrogen combustion characteristics was conducted based on an optical constant volume chamber under varied equivalence ratio conditions. The dynamic pressure sensor and schlieren system were used to evaluate the heat release and flame propagation characteristics. The results confirm the feasibility of PCSP type turbulent jet. The jet increase the flame propagation speed significantly compared to standard ignition, which shorten ignition delay and combustion duration, advance T50 largely, and increase the maximum combustion pressure slightly. As a result, the combustion intensity is increased largely, especially under lean regime, the combustion intensity index can be as high as 1.7 at certain equivalence ratio. In addition, the PCSP turbulent jet reduces the sensitivity of heat release to variation of equivalence ratio, which is helpful to simplify the combustion controlling strategy. Furthermore, with the enhancement of the flame propagation, the tendency of knocking combustion can be suppressed potentially.

In this study, the experiment study about the laminar burning velocity and the flame stability of CO2 diluted natural gas–hydrogen–air mixture was conducted in a constant volume combustion vessel by using the high-speed schlieren photography system. The unstretched laminar burning velocity and the Markstein length at different hydrogen fractions, dilution ratios and equivalence ratios and with different initial pressures were obtained. The flame stability was studied by analyzing the Markstein length, the flame thickness, the density ratio and the flame propagation schlieren photos. The results showed that the unstretched laminar burning velocity would be reduced with the increase of the initial pressure and dilution ratio and would be increased with the increase of the hydrogen fraction of the mixture. Meanwhile, the Markstein length would be increased with the increase of the equivalence ratio and the dilution ratio. Slight flaws occurred at the early stage. At a specific equivalence ratio, a higher initial pressure and hydrogen fraction would cause incomplete combustion.

Hydrogen can be used in conjunction with aviation kerosene in aircraft engines. To this end, this study uses n-decane/hydrogen mixtures to investigate the explosion characteristics of aviation kerosene/hydrogen in a constant volume combustion chamber with different hydrogen addition ratios (0, 0.2, 0.4), wide effective equivalence ratios (0.7–1.7), an initial temperature of 470 K, and initial pressures of 1 and 2 bar. The results show that the explosion pressure and explosion time decrease linearly with increasing hydrogen addition ratio. The effect of initial pressure is also discussed. A comparison of the adiabatic explosion pressures indicates that the hydrogen addition effect varies at different initial pressures and effective equivalence ratios owing to heat loss. In addition, the maximum pressure rise rate and deflagration index increase with increasing hydrogen concentration, which is more obvious for rich mixtures and high hydrogen concentrations.

Combustion characteristics of the methanol–air premixed mixtures were studied in a constant volume bomb at different equivalence ratios, initial pressures and temperatures, and dilution ratios. The results show that the combustion pressure, the mass burning rate and the burned gas temperature get the maximum value at the equivalence ratio of 1.1 while the flame development duration and the combustion duration get the minimum value at the equivalence ratio of 1.1. The flame development duration, the combustion duration and the peak combustion pressure decrease with the increase of the initial temperature, while the maximum burned gas temperature increases with the increase of the initial temperature. The peak combustion pressure and temperature increase with the increase of the initial pressure. The flame development duration and combustion duration increase with the increase of the dilution ratio, while the peak combustion pressure and temperature decrease with the increase of the dilution ratio.

An experimental study on the combustion characteristics of nitrogen diluted hydrogen was conducted in a constant volume combustion vessel over a wide range of equivalence ratios and dilution ratios at elevated pressures and temperatures. The explosion characteristics such as the explosion pressure, the combustion duration, the maximum rate of pressure rise, the deflagration index and the normalized mass burning rate were derived. The result shows that a short combustion duration and higher normalized mass burning rate were presented with the increase of equivalence ratio. With the increase of initial temperature, the explosion pressure, the maximum rate of pressure rise and the deflagration index were decreased, and a shorter combustion duration and higher normalized mass burning rate were presented. With the increase of initial pressure, the explosion pressure, the maximum rate of pressure rise and the deflagration index increase, a shorter combustion duration and higher normalized mass burning rate were presented. Nitrogen dilution significantly reduces the normalized mass burning rate and the deflagration index and thus the potential of explosion hazards.

One of the main problems with hydrogen fuelled internal combustion engines is the high NO level due to rapid combustion. Use of diluents with the charge and retardation of the spark ignition timing can reduce NO levels in Hydrogen fuelled engines. In this work a single cylinder hydrogen fuelled engine was run at different equivalence ratios at full throttle. NO levels were found to rise after an equivalence ratio of 0.55, maximum value was about 7500 ppm. High reductions in NO emission were not possible without a significant drop in thermal efficiency with retarded spark ignition timings. Drastic drop in NO levels to even as low as 2490 ppm were seen with water injection. In spite of the reduction in heat release rate (HRR) no loss in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) was observed. There was no significant influence on combustion stability or HC levels.

The effects of hydrogen addition and turbulence intensity on the natural gas–air turbulent combustion were studied experimentally using a constant volume vessel. Turbulence was generated by injecting the high-pressure fuel into the vessel. Flame propagation images and combustion characteristics via pressure-derived parameters were analyzed at various hydrogen volumetric fractions (from 0% to 40%) and the overall equivalence ratios of 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. The results showed that the turbulent combustion rate increased remarkably with the increase of hydrogen fraction in fuel blends when hydrogen fraction is over 11%. Combustion rate was increased remarkably with the introduction of turbulence in the bomb and decreased with the decrease of turbulence intensity. The lean flammability limit of natural gas–air turbulent combustion can be extended with increasing hydrogen fraction addition. Maximum pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise increased while combustion duration decreased monotonically with the increase of hydrogen fraction in fuel blends. The sensitivity of natural gas/hydrogen hybrid fuel to the variation of turbulence intensity was decreased while increasing the hydrogen addition. Maximum pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise increased while combustion duration decreased with the increase of turbulent intensity at stoichiometric and lean-burn conditions. However, slight influence on combustion characteristics was presented with variation of hydrogen fraction at the stoichiometric equivalence ratio with and without the turbulence in the bomb.

Flame propagation of premixed natural gas–hydrogen–air mixtures was studied in a constant volume combustion bomb. Laminar burning velocities and mass burning fluxes were obtained under various hydrogen fractions and equivalence ratios with various initial pressures, while flame stability and their influencing factors (Markstein length, density ratio and flame thickness) were obtained by analyzing the flame images at various hydrogen fractions, initial pressures and equivalence ratios. The results show that hydrogen fraction, initial pressure as well as equivalence ratio have combined influence on both unstretched laminar burning velocity and flame instability. Meanwhile, according to flame propagation pictures taken by the high speed camera, flame stability decreases with the increase of initial pressures; for given equivalence ratio and hydrogen fraction, flame thickness is more sensitive to the variation of the initial pressure than to that of the density ratio.
