Fish waste management has been one of the problems having the greatest impact on the environment. Fish farming detrimental effects on the marine environment in particular have become an issue of public concern. In European Union, numerous Directives, Decisions and Regulations were voted in an attempt to minimise the environmental impact of fisheries within the frame of Integrated Coastal Management. Treated fish waste has found many applications among which the most important are animal feed, biodiesel/biogas, dietic products (chitosan), natural pigments (after extraction), food‐packaging applications (chitosan), cosmetics (collagen), enzyme isolation, Cr immobilisation, soil fertiliser and moisture maintenance in foods (hydrolysates). In this review, an update of both environmental impact (inputs and outputs) and treated fish waste uses is provided by means of six comprehensive tables and seven figures.  相似文献

In the present study, we assessed the bactericidal effect of a combination of blue light (BL) and riboflavin (Rb) and elucidated the bacterial inactivation mechanism. Higher Rb concentrations (0.005–50 μM) resulted in greater inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium suspended in phosphate buffer saline (PBS). In the present dose-dependent study, significant inactivation was observed following BL + Rb treatment at 30 J/cm2 (19 min 23 s) in PBS. In apple juice (pH 3.2), BL + Rb treatment resulted in a 3–4-log reduction in the pathogens at 30 J/cm2. As expected, ROS was the key factor for pathogen inactivation. Moreover, cell membrane damage was observed on propidium iodide (PI) uptake analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These results indicated that BL + Rb treatment can be used as a powerful intervention system to ensure microbial safety in liquid beverages, in addition to enhancing the nutritional value.  相似文献

In order to increase the cell concentration and the accumulation of astaxanthin, the effects of nutrient concentration, pH, illumination and methods of supplying nutrients were studied for the cultivation of Haematococcus pluvialis. The replacement of media to avoid the deficiency of nutrients increased the cell concentration above 1 mg-dry cell cm(-3) without induction of astaxanthin accumulation. Illumination with blue light emitting diode lamps and nutrient starvation induced accumulation of astaxanthin, and the interactive effects of these two increased the astaxanthin concentration to 76 mug cm(-3).  相似文献

Concern has been voiced in recent years regarding the environmental implications of the Antarctic krill fishery. Attention has focused primarily on ecological concerns, whereas other environmental aspects, including potentially globally problematic emissions and material and energy demands, have not been examined in detail. Here we apply life cycle assessment to measure the contributions of krill meal, oil, and omega-3 capsules to global warming, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, energy use, and biotic resource use. Supply chains of one krill fishing and processing company, Aker BioMarine of Norway, were assessed. Impacts of krill products were found to be driven primarily by the combustion of fossil fuels onboard the fishing vessel and a transport/resupply vessel. Approximately 190 L of fuel are burned per tonne of raw krill landed, markedly higher than fuel inputs to reduction fisheries targeting other species. In contrast, the biotic resource use associated with extracting krill is relatively low compared to that of other reduction fisheries. Results of this study provide insight into the broader environmental implications of the krill fishery, comparisons between products derived from krill and other species targeted for reduction, opportunities for improving the fishery's performance, and a baseline against which to measure future performance.  相似文献

Recently, there has been an upsurge in the exploitation of the waste materials generated by the wine industry. Wine waste is characterised by the presence of natural antioxidants much safer than synthetic antioxidants. Wine waste‐derived antioxidants have been recently used in the food industry. Moreover, wine waste can be potentially used as soil conditioner, as adsorbent for heavy metals, for fertiliser and for pullulan production. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are currently incorporated into various consumer products, and numerous new applications and products containing CNTs are expected in the future. The potential for negative effects caused by CNT release into the environment is a prominent concern and numerous research projects have investigated possible environmental release pathways, fate, and toxicity. However, this expanding body of literature has not yet been systematically reviewed. Our objective is to critically review this literature to identify emerging trends as well as persistent knowledge gaps on these topics. Specifically, we examine the release of CNTs from polymeric products, removal in wastewater treatment systems, transport through surface and subsurface media, aggregation behaviors, interactions with soil and sediment particles, potential transformations and degradation, and their potential ecotoxicity in soil, sediment, and aquatic ecosystems. One major limitation in the current literature is quantifying CNT masses in relevant media (polymers, tissues, soils, and sediments). Important new directions include developing mechanistic models for CNT release from composites and understanding CNT transport in more complex and environmentally realistic systems such as heteroaggregation with natural colloids and transport of nanoparticles in a range of soils.  相似文献

An estimated 40% of food produced in the United States is wasted, which poses a significant barrier to achieving a sustainable future—so much so that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 12, to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns,” includes a goal to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level, and reduce food losses along the production and supply chains by 2030.” Annually, consumers waste approximately 90 billion pounds of food, equating to roughly 1 pound per person per day. More specifically, consumer waste is the largest contributor to the food waste problem when compared with other steps along the supply chain, such as production, post-harvest handling and storage, processing, and distribution. Furthermore, American families discard approximately 25% of the food and beverages they buy. When considering the type of waste coming from households, fresh fruits and vegetables rank highest at 22%, with dairy products, at 19%, following in close second. A variety of factors contribute to why consumers waste so much food. For dairy, commonly referenced reasons are related to the misunderstanding of date labels, poor planning of purchases, spoilage before consuming products, and improper storage. This wasted food accumulates in landfills and produces methane when decomposing, resulting in environmental consequences related to ozone depletion and climate change. Milk can have negative environmental impacts when disposed of down the drain. This review will discuss the food waste problem, causes, and potential solutions at the consumer level, with particular focus on dairy waste. An individual plus policy, system, and environment approach will also be integrated to provide a well-rounded view of the issue.  相似文献

The leather processing industry generates huge amounts of wastes, both in solid and liquid form. Fleshing from animal hides/skins is one such waste that is high in protein content. In this study, raw fleshing has been complexed with iron and is used for removal of chromium(VI). The effect of pH and the initial concentration of chromium(VI) on the removal of Cr(IV) by iron treated fleshing is presented. Iron treatment is shown to greatly improve adsorption of the fleshing for hexavalent chromium. The ultimate adsorption capacity of iron treated fleshing is 51 mg of chromium(VI) per gram of fleshing. That of untreated fleshing is 9 mg/g such that iron treatment increases the adsorption capacity of fleshing by 10-fold. The measured adsorption kinetics is well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The uptake of chromium(VI) by fleshing is best described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies show that the iron is incorporated into the protein matrix. Shifts in XPS spectra suggest that dichromate binding occurs with iron at active adsorption sites and that iron treated fleshing removes chromium(VI) without reducing it to chromium(III).  相似文献

This study shows for the first time that overlooked mg/L concentrations of industrial dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) waste residues in sewage can cause "rotten cabbage" odor problems bydimethyl sulfide (DMS) in conventional municipal wastewater treatment. In laboratory studies, incubation of activated sludge with 1-10 mg/L DMSO in bottles produced dimethyl sulfide (DMS) at concentrations that exceeded the odor threshold by approximately 4 orders of magnitude in the headspace gas. Aeration at a rate of 6 m3 air/m3 sludge resulted in emission of the DMS into the exhaust air in a manner analogous to that of an activated sludge aeration tank. A field study atthe NEWPCP sewage treatment plant in Philadelphia found DMSO levels intermittently peaking as high as 2400 mg/L in sewage near an industrial discharger. After 3 h, the DMSO concentration in the influent to the aeration tank rose from a baseline level of less than 0.01 mg/L to a level of 5.6 mg/L and the DMS concentration in the mixed liquor rose from less than 0.01 to 0.2 mg/L. Finding this link between the intermittent occurrence of DMSO residues in influent of the treatment plant and the odorant DMS in the aeration tank was the keyto understanding and eliminating the intermittent "canned corn" or "rotten cabbage" odor emissions from the aeration tank that had randomly plagued this plant and its city neighborhood for two decades. Sewage authorities should consider having wastewater samples analyzed for DMSO and DMS to check for this possible odor problem and to determine whether DMSO emission thresholds should be established to limit odor generation at sewage treatment plants.  相似文献

The present study was initiated to determine the capacity of sulfide minerals (pyrite FeS2 and chalcopyrite CuFeS2) to delay the migration of inorganic selenium species in geological formations. Interactions between Se(IV) and Se(-II) and synthetic and natural sulfide minerals were investigated under anoxic conditions using the batch method. Significant sorption of selenium occurred under acidic conditions. Analysis of the solids after Se sorption using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) demonstrated the presence of reduced selenium species on the metallic sulfide surfaces, thus suggesting an oxido-reduction process coupled with sorption. Selenium reduction occurred concomitantly with the oxidation of pyritic sulfur, whereas metallic species (Fe, Cu) were not involved in the redox process. Formation of ferroselite (FeSe2) was postulated to take place on the synthetic solid while surface complexation or ionic exchange processes were more likely on the natural solids.  相似文献

The significance of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) as a pest of stored grains will likely be influenced by the relative availability of different resources regionally and the beetles’ ability to utilize each of them. Therefore the performance across the life cycle of laboratory and field populations of T. castaneum on commonly available structural forms of wheat and sorghum, as conventional resources, was quantified and compared to that on cotton seed. The latter is not usually associated with T. castaneum, but large beetle infestations have been recorded commonly in cotton gins in Australia. The highest number of individuals of each stage (from a given number of eggs) developed on wheat and sorghum flour and kibbled seeds. Cotton seed did not support the development of laboratory population beetles and all neonate larvae died before pupation. In contrast, some of the field population larvae did develop on cotton flour, but their number was significantly lower in comparison to development on wheat and sorghum. Field population beetles produced significantly more eggs than did laboratory population beetles, on both the whole seed and flour. Field population females had a consistently higher fecundity (~78% more eggs) than the laboratory population females, at least over the first three weeks of adult life. These results suggest that field populations of T. castaneum should be used in experiments if we are to develop a more realistic understanding of the field ecology of this species. The relative rate at which these insects infest available resources in the field also warrants further investigation.  相似文献

This study developed and investigated the combination system of pulsed ohmic heating (POH) and ultraviolet A light-emitting diode (UVA-LED) to enhance inactivation of pathogens in phosphate-buffered saline, milk, and orange juice. When Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium (6–8 log CFU/ml) in samples were subjected to the simultaneous combination of POH and UVA-LED at 50–65°C, the reduction levels increased >1 log CFU/ml compared with each treatment alone. After pathogens in PBS were subjected to the combination treatment at 65°C (50 s), the degree of intracellular ROS generation and lipid peroxidation were increased approximately 1.6 times than each treatment alone. Moreover, propidium iodide uptake values, which indicated cell membrane damage, for E. coli O157:H7 were 0.92, 14.22, and 19.92 after UVA-LED, POH, and their combination treatment, respectively. Therefore, the combination of POH and UVA-LED may possibly be applied as an effective hurdle technology for food safety.Industrial relevanceIt was identified that the combination treatment induced the generation of intracellular ROS; thereby causing lipid peroxidation and cell membrane damage of pathogens. However, the combination system has no effect on DNA damage of pathogens. In addition, there was no significant difference in the content of vitamin and malondialdehyde in milk and orange juice before and after the combination treatment. Thus, this research provides a fundamental database for the applicability of the combination system of POH and UVA-LED to the pasteurization process in the food industry.  相似文献

Neo-formed contaminants (NFCs) are compounds forming during heating or preservation processes and exhibiting possible harmful effects to humans. Among the several NFCs described in literature, Acrylamide and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) have attracted the attention of the scientific community in recent years. Both acrylamide and HMF are considered as probably or potentially carcinogenic to humans or might be metabolized by humans to potentially carcinogenic compounds. Acrylamide and HMF are mainly formed through Maillard Reaction and can be regarded as the most important heat-induced contaminants occurring in bread and bakery products. Acrylamide is carcinogen in rodent and some recent epidemiological studies have highlighted the association between dietary acrylamide and an increased risk of some types of cancer. HMF has been recently shown to be converted in vivo to 5-sulfoxymethylfurfural (SMF) which is a genotoxic compound. Dietary intake of HMF is in the order of mg/kg far above that of other food toxicants. In this paper, the latest available data on acrylamide and HMF have been reviewed focusing on available mitigation strategies, metabolism, dietary exposure, and toxicity. The results from the epidemiological studies about acrylamide and cancer risk and their relevance have been discussed, the major gaps of knowledge have been identified and the perspective of ongoing and future research was established.  相似文献
