The objective of the study was to evaluate the hypothesis that the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of removable partial dentures (RPD) made from cast titanium alloys can be improved by alloying with low-cost, low-melting elements such as Cu, Al, and Fe using commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V as controls. RPD specimens in the form of rest-shaped, clasp, rectangular-shaped specimens and round-bar tensile specimens were cast using an experimental Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy, Ti-5Al-1Fe, and Ti-1Fe in an Al2O3-based investment with a centrifugal-casting machine. The mechanical properties of the alloys were determined by performing tensile tests under a controlled displacement rate. The fatigue life of the RPD specimens was tested by the three-point bending in an MTS testing machine under a cyclic displacement of 0.5 mm. Fatigue tests were performed at 10 Hz at ambient temperature until the specimens failed into two pieces. The tensile data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05) and the fatigue life data were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (α = 0.05). The experimental Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy showed a significantly higher average fatigue life than that of either CP-Ti or Ti-5Al-1Fe alloy (p < 0.05). SEM fractography showed that the fatigue cracks initiated from surface grains, surface pores, or hard particles in surface grains instead of the internal casting pores. Among the alloys tested, the Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy exhibited favorable results in fabricating dental appliances with an excellent fatigue behavior compared with other commercial alloys.  相似文献

A systematic study has been conducted of the sintering, sintered microstructure and tensile properties of a range of lower cost Ti-Fe-Si alloys, including Ti-3Fe-(0-4)Si, Ti-(3-6)Fe-0.5Si, and Ti-(3-6)Fe-1Si (in wt pct throughout). Small additions of Si (??1?pct) noticeably improve the as-sintered tensile properties of Ti-3Fe alloy, including the ductility, with fine titanium silicides (Ti5Si3) being dispersed in both the ?? and ?? phases. Conversely, additions of ?>1?pct Si produce coarse and/or networked Ti5Si3 silicides along the grain boundaries leading to predominantly intergranular fracture and, hence, poor ductility, although the tensile strength continues to increase because of the reinforcement by Ti5Si3. Increasing the Fe content in the Ti-xFe-0.5/1.0Si alloys above 3?pct markedly increases the average grain size and changes the morphology of the ??-phase phase to much thinner and more acicular laths. Consequently, the ductility drops to <1?pct. Si reacts exothermically with Fe to form Fe-Si compounds prior to the complete diffusion of the Fe into the Ti matrix during heating. The heat thus released in conjunction with the continuous external heat input melts the silicides leading to transient liquid formation, which improves the densification during heating. No Ti-TiFe eutectoid was observed in the as-sintered Ti-Fe-Si alloys. The optimum PM Ti-Fe-Si compositions are determined to be Ti-3Fe-(0.5-1.0)Si.  相似文献

Direct laser fabrication has been used to deposit multilayers of burn-resistant titanium alloy onto the surface of Ti697 (Ti-11Sn-5Zr-2.25Al-0.25Si) alloy by feeding Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C (wt pct) powder into the laser molten pool. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited layers have been studied to identify the importance of laser conditions on properties/microstructure. The observations are discussed in terms of the optimum laser conditions and thus the potential of using BuRTi (Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C) to tip blades of high-temperature titanium alloys to provide burn resistance.  相似文献

Ti-6Al-4V-2Ni is being considered as a composite matrix material because of its potential for a lower consolidation temperature and reduced reaction product formation compared with conventional Ti-6A1-4V. Stress/strain-rate measurements of Ti-6Al-4V-2Ni in sheet form provided data for calculation of diffusion bonding parameters required for efficient consolidation. These data were used as consolidation parameters for fabrication of SiC (SCS-6) reinforced Ti-6Al-4V-2Ni. The composite with 10.5 vol pct SiC exhibits room temperature tensile strength approximately 80 pct of that observed for conventional Ti-6Al-4V/SiC having 35 to 40 vol pct SiC. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the fiber-matrix reaction zone is roughly one-half the thickness of that found in SiC-reinforced Ti -6A1-4V, and that it consists of TiC and Ti5Si3. Nickel does not enter into the reaction zone products, but rather promotes the formation of Ti2Ni in the matrix.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed study of microwave (MW) sintering of W-Ni-Fe heavy alloys (WHAs) with tungsten (W) content 90 to 98 mass pct (Ni and Fe mass ratio of 7 to 3) in comparison with conventional (CV) hydrogen sintering. Experimental results show that WHAs were MW sintered to fully dense (≥99 pct of theoretical) when heated to sintering temperatures at a heating rate of 50 K/min to 80 K/min (50 °C/min to 80 °C/min) and isothermally held for 2 to 10 minutes, with sintering cycle times of only 25 to 35 minutes (excluding the cooling time). The desired microstructures of finer W grains, more matrix phases, and lower W contiguity (in 95W and 98W) were produced compared to the counterparts by CV sintering. Such microstructural features offered the alloys excellent tensile properties: ultimate tensile strengths (UTS) 1080 to 1110 MPa and tensile elongation 22.1 to 26.8 pct in 90 to 95W, and UTS 920 MPa and elongation 11.2 pct in 98W. MW sintering appeared to be more effective in fabricating WHAs with W content ≥95 pct. It was observed that the superior UTS with MW-sintered alloys was mainly due to the fast heating and shortened isothermal holding times. Prolonged sintering led to substantial grain coarsening as a result of faster tungsten grain growth in MW sintering, and consequently deteriorated the tensile properties. The grain growth rate constant K achieved was calculated to be 5.1 μm3/s for MW sintering compared to 2.9 μm3/s for CV sintering. Fast heating and short isothermal holding times are thus suggested for the fabrication of WHAs by MW sintering.  相似文献

The effectiveness of microwave (MW) sintering has been demonstrated on many ceramic systems, a number of metallic systems, and metal-ceramic composites, but remains ambiguous for Ti powder materials. This work presents a detailed comparative study of MW and conventional sintering of Ti powder compacts in vacuum. It is shown that MW radiation is effective in heating Ti powder compacts with the assistance of MW susceptors; it delivered an average heating rate of 34 K/min (34 °C/min), compared to 4 K/min (4 °C/min) by conventional vacuum heating in an alumina-tube furnace. Microwave radiation resulted in similar densification with well-developed sinter bonds. However, MW-sintered samples showed higher bulk hardness, a harder surface shell, and coarser grains. The difference in hardness is attributed to the difference in the oxygen content, supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. The mechanisms of MW heating for metal powder compacts are discussed in the context of the sintering of Ti powder materials and attributed to three combined effects. These include heat radiation from the MW susceptors at low temperatures, enhanced MW absorption due to the transformation of the TiO2 film on each Ti powder particle to oxygen-deficient Ti oxides, which are MW absorbers; and the volumetric heating of Ti powder particles by eddy currents.  相似文献

This study is concerned with the fabrication in heavy section of the titanium alloys Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al (Ti-8823) and Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn (Ti-662). The technique utilized to achieve 84 pct reduction during the extrusion of heavy section cylindrical hollows is given. The response to subsequent aging of both alloys is described in terms of the effect on important mechanical properties such as yield and ultimate tensile strength, ductility and fracture toughness. For the Ti-8823 alloy extruded in heavy section, it is shown that the optimum heat treatment consists of aging directly after hot working rather than the more common solution treatment and age cycle. With the former heat treatment, uniform through the thickness mechanical properties are obtained. Uniform mechanical properties are also obtained through the section of the Ti-662 extrusion with a solutionizing and overaging heat treatment.  相似文献

In this study, an attempt has been made to synthesize 1.0 wt pct nano-Y2O3-dispersed ferritic alloys with nominal compositions: 83.0 Fe-13.5 Cr-2.0 Al-0.5 Ti (alloy A), 79.0 Fe-17.5 Cr-2.0 Al-0.5 Ti (alloy B), 75.0 Fe-21.5 Cr-2.0 Al-0.5 Ti (alloy C), and 71.0 Fe-25.5 Cr-2.0 Al-0.5 Ti (alloy D) steels (all in wt pct) by solid-state mechanical alloying route and consolidation the milled powder by high-pressure sintering at 873 K, 1073 K, and 1273 K (600°C, 800°C, and 1000°C) using 8 GPa uniaxial pressure for 3 minutes. Subsequently, an extensive effort has been undertaken to characterize the microstructural and phase evolution by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Mechanical properties including hardness, compressive strength, Young’s modulus, and fracture toughness were determined using micro/nano-indentation unit and universal testing machine. The present ferritic alloys record extraordinary levels of compressive strength (from 1150 to 2550 MPa), Young’s modulus (from 200 to 240 GPa), indentation fracture toughness (from 3.6 to 15.4 MPa√m), and hardness (from13.5 to 18.5 GPa) and measure up to 1.5 through 2 times greater strength but with a lower density (~7.4 Mg/m3) than other oxide dispersion-strengthened ferritic steels (<1200 MPa) or tungsten-based alloys (<2200 MPa). Besides superior mechanical strength, the novelty of these alloys lies in the unique microstructure comprising uniform distribution of either nanometric (~10 nm) oxide (Y2Ti2O7/Y2TiO5 or un-reacted Y2O3) or intermetallic (Fe11TiY and Al9.22Cr2.78Y) particles' ferritic matrix useful for grain boundary pinning and creep resistance.  相似文献

The effect of plastic deformation mode on tensile properties of quenched commercial β-phase titanium alloys has been investigated at approximately constant grain size and oxygen content. In addition, stability of β-phase has been estimated from ω-reflections or diffuse streaking in electron diffraction patterns in a manner similar to the previous works on binary β-phase titanium alloys. Dominant mode of plastic deformation is 332 〈113〉 twinning in the alloys with large instability of β-phase, such as Ti-ll.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn and Ti-15Mo-5Zr, and is crystallographic slip in the alloys with small instability of β-phase, such as Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al, Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Mo-4Zr, Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn, Ti-8Mo-8V-2Fe-3Al, and Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al. Twinning leads to low yield strength and large elongation, while slip results in high yield strength and small elongation in agreement with binary and ternary β -phase titanium alloys.  相似文献

A Ti-4Al-2Fe-3Cu (wt pct) alloy containing only low-cost alloying elements was fabricated by vacuum sintering a blend of TiH2, Al, Fe, and Cu powders at 1200 °C for 1 hour followed by hot extrusion at the same temperature. The as-extruded alloy exhibited a microstructure consisting of mainly α/β lamellar colonies and Ti2Cu as a minor phase. The average colony size and lamella thickness were 118 and 12 µm, respectively, and Fe and Cu were predominantly distributed in the β lamellae. The as-extruded alloy had a high tensile yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1248 and 1270 MPa, respectively, but a limited ductility (elongation to fracture: 2.3 pct). Annealing at 750 °C for 4 hour caused the average colony size and lamella thickness of the alloy to increase to 145 and 17 µm, respectively, and the volume fraction of the β phase decreased with the annealing. These microstructural changes resulted in a slight decrease of the YS and UTS to 1221 and 1253 MPa, but a clear increase of the ductility with the elongation to fracture reaching 4 pct. This work demonstrates that a combination of relatively low-temperature vacuum sintering, hot extrusion, and annealing can be effectively utilized to fabricate a low-cost Ti-4Al-2Fe-3Cu alloy with high strength and appreciable tensile ductility.

Analysis of isothermal grain growth kinetics of nanocrystalline Fe-9Cr-1Mo and Fe-9Cr-1W-based ferritic oxide dispersion strengthened alloys is reported. Fe-9Cr-1Mo-0.25Ti-0.5Y2O3 alloy exhibited ~900 and ~250 pct enhancement in grain-coarsening resistance at 1073 K (800 °C) in comparison with Fe-9Cr-1Mo-0.5Y2O3 alloy and Fe-9Cr-1W-0.5Y2O3 alloy, respectively. Comparison of grain growth time exponents also revealed that addition of Ti and Y2O3 to nanocrystalline Fe-9Cr alloy has significantly enhanced the grain growth resistance. This is attributed to the possible presence of Y-Ti-O-based nanoclusters (<5 nm).  相似文献

The process of canless extrusion in ambient environment, using cold isostatic pressed, and vacuum-sintered, direct-consolidated blended-elemental hydrided ADMA titanium powder, mixed with master alloy powder for the Ti-6Al-4V composition, has been successfully demonstrated. However, these initially processed unoptimized powder-based extrusions also exhibited oxygen content of about 3000 ppm, within the ASTM B817 Standard, but exceeding the AMS Specification 4935 maximum limit of 2000 ppm, and with pre-extrusion residual hydrogen within 300–500 ppm resulting in post-extrusion void nucleation aligned with the extrusion direction. Additional optimization of extrusion billets during the CIP-and-sintering steps has been successfully demonstrated reducing both oxygen and hydrogen contents to levels at or below the AMS Specification limits for Ti-6Al-4V composition (oxygen content of 2000 ppm maximum, and hydrogen content of 125 ppm maximum). Processing-microstructure-property correlations of the optimized, AMS-4935-Specification-conformant, Ti-6Al-4V blended-elemental powder-based product form exhibited an overall mechanical property balance matching that of double-arc-remelted ingot-based extrusions. Property matching was not only in terms of static mechanical properties (room-temperature tensile properties, and monotonic fracture toughness K IC (K Q) values), but also in terms of dynamic fatigue properties (combined S/N plus da/dN properties), as well as stress-corrosion resistance, as measured in terms of K ISCC threshold values.  相似文献

Two near-β Ti-10V-3Fe-3Al and Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloys were produced by blended elemental powder metallurgy using hydrogenated titanium and V-Fe-Al master alloy powders. The distributions of the alloying elements were investigated at different stages of transformation of the heterogeneous powder compacts into the final homogeneous alloy product. The influence of iron content on chemical homogenization, densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties of as-sintered alloys was discussed with respect to the fast diffusion mobility of iron in titanium. It was concluded that a 1 pct increase in Fe content, as the alloying element with the fastest diffusivity in titanium, has a positive effect on densification. However, this also results in some grain coarsening of the final material. The attained mechanical properties were comparable with those of cast/wrought near-beta titanium alloys.  相似文献

Diffusion bonding is a near net shape forming process that can join dissimilar materials through atomic diffusion under a high pressure at a high temperature.Titanium alloy TC4(Ti-6 Al-4 V)and 4 J29 Kovar alloy(Fe-29 Ni-17 Co)were diffusely bonded by a vacuum hot-press sintering process in the temperature range of 700-850°C and bonding time of 120 min, under a pressure of 34.66 MPa.Interfacial microstructures and intermetallic compounds of the diffusion-bonded joints were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction(XRD)and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS).The elemental diffusion across the interface was revealed by electron probe microanalysis.Mechanical properties of joints were investigated by micro Vickers hardness and tensile strength. Results of EDS and XRD indicated that(Fe,Co,Ni)-Ti,TiNi,Ti_2Ni,TiNi_2,Fe_2 Ti,Ti_(17) Mn_3 and Al_6 Ti_(19) were formed at the interface. When the bonding temperature was raised from 700 to 850°C,the voids of interface were reduced and intermetallic layers were widened.Maximum tensile strength of joints at 53.5 MPa was recorded by the sintering process at 850°C for 120 min.Fracture surface of the joint indicated brittle nature, and failure took place through interface of intermetallic compounds.Based on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the diffusion-bonded joints, diffusion mechanisms between Ti-6 Al-4 Vtitanium and Fe-29 Ni-17 Co Kovar alloys were analyzed in terms of elemental diffusion, nucleation and growth of grains, plastic deformation and formation of intermetallic compounds near the interface.  相似文献

Diffusion of cobalt, chromium, and titanium in Ni3Al   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Diffusion studies of cobalt, chromium, and titanium in Ni3Al (γ′) at temperatures between 1298 and 1573 K have been performed using diffusion couples of (Ni-24.2 at. pct Al/Ni-24.4 at. pct Al-2.91 at. pct Co), (Ni-24.2 at. pct Al/Ni-23.1 at. pct Al-2.84 at. pct Cr), and (Ni-24.2 at. pct Al/Ni-20.9 at. pct Al-3.17 at. pct Ti). The diffusion profiles were measured by an electron probe microanalyzer, and the diffusion coefficients of cobalt, chromium, and tita-nium in γ′ containing 24.2 at. pct Al were determined from those diffusion profiles by Hall’s method. The temperature dependencies of their diffusion coefficients (m[su2]/s) are as follows: ~D(Co) = (4.2 ± 1.2) × 1O-3exp {-325 ± 4 (kJ/mol)/RT} ~D(Cr) = (1.1 ± 0.3) × 10-1 exp {-366 ± 3 (kJ/mol)/RT} and D(Ti) = (5.6 ± 3.1) × 101 exp {-468 ± 6 (kJ/mol)/RT} The values of activation energy increase in this order: cobalt, chromium, and titanium. These activation energies are closely related to the substitution behavior of cobalt, chromium, and titanium atoms in the Ll2 lattice sites of γ′; the cobalt atoms occupying the face-centered sites in the Ll2 structure diffuse with the normal activation energy, whereas the titanium atoms oc-cupying the cubic corner sites diffuse with a larger activation energy that includes the energy due to local disordering caused by the atomic jumps. The chromium atoms which can occupy both sites diffuse with an activation energy similar to that of cobalt atoms.  相似文献

A series of in-situ, deformation-processed metal matrix composites were produced by direct powder extrusion of blended constituents. The resulting composites are comprised of a metallic Ti-6Al-4V matrix containing dispersed and co-deformed discontinuously reinforced-intermetallic matrix composite (DR-IMC) reinforcements. The DR-IMCs are comprised of discontinuous TiB2 particulate within a titanium trialuminide or near-γ Ti-47Al matrix. Thus, an example of a resulting composite would be Ti-6Al-4V+40 vol pct (Al3Ti+30 vol pct TiB2) or Ti-6Al-4V+40 vol pct (Ti-47Al+40 vol pct TiB2), with the DR-IMCs having an aligned, high aspect ratio morphology as a consequence of deformation processing. The degree to which both constituents deform during extrusion has been examined using systematic variations in the percentage of TiB2 within the DR-IMC, and by varying the percentage of DR-IMC within the metal matrix. In the former instance, variation of the TiB2 percentage effects variations in relative flow behavior; while in the latter, varying the percentage of DR-IMC within the metallic matrix effects changes in strain distribution among components. The results indicate that successful co-deformation processing can occur within certain ranges of relative flow stress; however, the extent of commensurate flow will be limited by the constituents’ inherent capacity to plastically deform.  相似文献

A powder-level, finite-element model is created to describe densification, as a function of applied stress during uniaxial hot pressing, of CP-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V powders with spherical or spheroidal shapes for various packing geometries. Two cases are considered: (1) isothermal densification (in the α- or β-fields of CP-Ti and in the β-field of Ti-6Al-4V) where power-law creep dominates and (2) thermal cycling densification (across the α/β-phase transformation of Ti-6Al-4V) where transformation mismatch plasticity controls deformation at low stresses. Reasonable agreement is achieved between numerical results and previously published experimental measurements and continuum modeling predictions.  相似文献
