The major techniques in computer art in use so far are classified into six categories and evaluated. Among these categories, we discuss the function method in detail by showing pictures generated by our system ART-3, a small system based on the function method. By this means we show the usefulness of mathematics in this area and demonstrate the enormous possibilities of computer art. Furthermore, on the basis of our experience of using ART-3 the role of artists in technology-aided art is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Although artificial intelligence techniques have been successfully applied to reproduce many rational features of human behaviour, a great barrier has been encountered in simulating human activities where intuition and emotion are involved. Art making and viewing are processes where typically rational and mechanical aspects interact with aesthetic and cognitive criteria. Can you make a computer understand and autonomously produce art? This paper proposes extending the frontiers of information systems (IS) research by seeing computer art as a kind of information system. It explores some research questions that arise if we take such a view. A new agenda for IS research is developed, based upon six themes in computer art and related work in previous IS research. The link between IS and computer art is bi-directional: our theories of information systems could inform the study of computer art, and computer art could inform our information systems theories, possibly leading to modification or even abandonment of them. Twelve research questions are suggested, and potential barriers to IS researchers studying computer art are also discussed. The paper offers possibilities, not solutions, and makes an important contribution by suggesting new opportunities for innovative research in IS and by signposting some of the topics which could be addressed.  相似文献

In this article the author explains about the concepts and definitions behind digital art and the technological issues related to artistic and cultural heritage applications. Artistic creation begins with a concept or an abstract idea, which is gradually modeled into a form of tangible or intangible digital content that can be both the means and the end product. Digital artists consider computer technology as a way to enhance creativity and as a final artifact. The dual manifestation of artistic and cultural heritage applications results in workflow that differs for each application class. Application constraints identification is one of the most important but often undervalued issues in digital art creation. This article analyses the knowledge needed to understand a computer program within the philosophy of information. L. Floridi's method of levels of abstraction is applied to the relation between an ideal programmer and a modern computer seen together as an informational organism. The results obtained by the mental experiment known as the Knowledge Game are applied to this relation, so to explain what a programmer should know in order to program a modern computer. In particular, this analysis clearly shows why non-conscious agents have no hopes to write significant programs. Using a computer to produce sound in the classroom is not new and has been used for ear training and drill-and-practice for some time. Computer music can also provide computer students with an alternative means to explore traditional computer concepts: modular design, functional decomposition, and iterative development. Combining these uses for computer music would produce a course where both computer students and music students could gain an insight to the use of system development techniques.
