A polyamide 6 (PA 6)/silica nanocomposite was obtained through a novel method, in situ polymerization, by first suspending silica particles in ϵ-caproamide under stirring and then polymerizing this mixture at high temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere. The silicas were premodified with aminobutyric acid prior to the polymerization. The effects of the addition of unmodified and modified silicas on the dispersion, interfacial adhesion, isothermal crystallization, and mechanical properties of PA 6 nanocomposites were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and mechanical tests, respectively. The results show that the silicas dispersed homogeneously in the PA 6 matrix. The addition of silicas increases the glass transition temperature and crystallization rate of PA 6. The mechanical properties such as impact strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break of the PA 6/modified silica nanocomposites showed a tendency to increase and decrease with increase of the silica content and have maximum values at 5% silica content, whereas those of the PA 6/unmodified silica system decreased gradually. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Toluene 2, 4‐diisocyanate (TDI) functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs‐NCO) were used to prepare monomer casting polyamide 6 (MCPA6)/MWNTs nanocomposites via in situ anionic ring‐opening polymerization (AROP). Isocyanate groups of MWNTs‐NCO could serve as AROP activators of ?‐caprolactam (CL) in the in situ polymerization. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) showed that a graft copolymer of PA6 and MWNTs was formed in the in situ polymerization. MWNTs‐PA6 covalent bonds of the graft copolymer constituted a strong type of interfacial interaction in the nanocomposites and increased the compatibility of MWNTs and MCPA6 matrix. The nanocomposites were characterized for the morphology, mechanical, crystallization, and thermal properties through field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), tensile testing, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FETEM analysis showed that MWNTs were homogeneously dispersed in MCPA6 matrix. The initial tensile strengths and tensile modulus of the nanocomposite with 1.5 wt % loading of MWNTs were enhanced by about 16 and 13%, respectively, compared with the corresponding values for neat MCPA6. DSC analysis indicated that the crystallization temperature of the nanocomposites was increased by 8°C by adding 1.5 wt % MWNTs compared with pure MCPA6. Besides, it was found that the thermal stability of MCPA6 was improved by the addition of the MWNTs. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

In this article, we describe the fabrication by melt mixing of graphene‐polypropylene nanocomposites and present the effect of graphene addition on some selected properties of polypropylene (PP). The graphene nanosheets (GNs) used as nano‐reinforcing agents were obtained through chemical reduction of graphene oxide by hydrazine hydrate. GNs were characterized and successfully dispersed into PP matrix to produce PP/GNs nanocomposites. The effects of GNs content on thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties were reported, and the obtained results were discussed in terms of morphology and state of dispersion and distribution of the GNs within the polymer matrix. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction of the nanocomposites has shown a relatively good dispersion of GNs in the polymer matrix, with the presence of only few aggregates. Increasing GNs content resulted in a significant increase in both mechanical and thermal properties with only few percent of GNs loading. Rheological behavior of the PP/GNs nanocomposites showed a Maxwellian‐like behavior for low GNs concentrations and a viscoelastic solid‐like behavior for GNs content exceeding the concentration of the percolation threshold. Polyglycidol synthesized by cationic ring‐opening polymerization of glycidol (boron trifluoride initiation in dichloromethane) was purified of low molecular weight contaminants by centrifugal filtration. The high and low molecular weight fractions were characterized by NMR, GPC, osmometry, viscometry, DSC, and FTIR. The 13C‐NMR spectrum of this polymer was completely annotated by proposing a new step in the reaction mechanism. The four thermal dimers of glycidol were also isolated and identified as 2,5‐bis(hydroxymethyl)‐1,4‐dioxane and 2,6‐bis(hydroxymethyl)‐1,4‐dioxane, each of which can exist in cis and trans configurations. Polyglycidol was found to be hygroscopic, picking up about 5% by weight of atmospheric moisture. It was also found that, over time (ca. 1–2 years), polyglycidol crosslinks into a rubbery, insoluble mass. It is therefore recommended that this polymer be stored dry and used within a few months of synthesis. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 1344–1351, 2004  相似文献

In situ anionic ring opening polymerization is used to prepare monomer casting polyamide 6 (MCPA6)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposites, whereby water is used as auxiliary dispersing agent of hydroxyl functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs‐OH) and ε‐caprolactam (CL) monomer. The MWNTs‐OH were dispersed homogenously in MCPA6 matrix when being observed through transmission electron microcopy. The well dispersed MWNTs‐OH existed at the center of many radial texture phases in MCPA6 matrix. Polarizing microscope analysis showed that these radial texture phases were MCPA6 spherulitic crystallities. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed that the crystallization temperature of the MCPA6/MWNTs‐OH nanocomposites had been improved by adding only 0.2 wt % MWNTs‐OH when compared with pure MCPA6. The influence of MWNTs‐OH on the thermal stability of MCPA6 under nitrogen and air environments was also investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were successfully grafted with a low molecular weight poly(butylene glutarate) through an in situ polymerization procedure. The grafting treatment decreased the CNC hydrophilic character and increased the onset of their thermal degradation by approximately 20°C, thus increasing the possibilities of CNC application. Composites of grafted and nongrafted CNC with a poly(butylene‐adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) matrix were prepared by melt extrusion. The CNC addition led to an increase of 50% of the tensile elastic modulus of the PBAT. In addition, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that the composite with CNC retained its high modulus even at temperatures far above the glass transition temperature of PBAT. At 60°C the storage modulus of the composite with CNC was approximately 200% higher than that of the pure PBAT. Thus, in this work, nanocomposites of improved properties were obtained through a combination of in situ polymerization and melt extrusion. POLYM. ENG. The aim of this study was to investigate the crystallization behavior and UV‐protection property of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)‐ZnO nanocomposits. PET‐ZnO nanocomposites containing 0.5–3.0 wt % of ZnO were successfully synthesized by in situ polymerization. The Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the silane coupling agent was anchored onto the surface of ZnO. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed ZnO particles were dispersed homogeneously in PET matrix with amount of 0.5–1.0 wt %. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results exhibited that the incorporation of ZnO into PET resulted in increase of the melting transition temperature (Tm) and crystallization temperature (Tc) of PET‐ZnO nanocomposites. The crystallization behavior of PET and PET‐ZnO nanocomposites was strongly affected by cooling rate. ZnO nanoparticles can act as an efficient nucleating agent to facilitate PET crystallization. UV–vis spectrophotometry showed that UV‐ray transmittance of PET‐ZnO nanocomposites decreased remarkably and reached the minimum value of 14.3% with 1.5 wt % of ZnO, compared with pure PET whose UV‐ray transmittance was 84.5%. PET‐ZnO nanocomposites exhibited better UV‐protection property than pure PET, especially in the range of UVA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Fibers prepared by melt spinning process from the PP (polypropylene)/organoclay nanocomposite were characterized in details with the aid of SEM, FTIR, XRD, DSC, and mechanical measurements. The results suggested that the lower content of organoclay (0.1%) added to the PP matrix increased the crystallinity and mechanical property (tensile strength) of the PP/organoclay nanocomposite fiber. With increasing the content of organoclay (≥ 0.3%), the crystallinity and the tensile strength both a little decreased, and the fiber containing organoclay exhibited multi‐peaks at the same draw ratio during the heating process. Furthermore, the degree of orientation of the fiber increased a little with lower content of organoclay (0.1%) introduction to PP during the infrared dichroism measurement. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nylon 11 (PA11) nanocomposites with different loadings of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by melt compounding. Scanning electron microscopy images on the fracture surfaces of the composites showed a uniform dispersion of MWNTs throughout the matrix. The presence of the MWNTs significantly improved the thermal stability and enhanced the storage modulus (G′) of the polymer matrix. Melt rheology studies showed that, compared with neat PA11, the incorporation of MWNT into the matrix resulted in higher complex viscosities (|η*|), storage modulus (G′), loss modulus (G″), and lower loss factor (tanδ). PA11 and its nanocomposites containing less than 1 wt% MWNTs showed similar frequency dependencies and reached a Newtonian plateau at low frequencies. For the nanocomposite with 2 wt% MWNTs, the regional network was destroyed and the orientation of the MWNTs during shearing exhibited a very strong shear thinning effect. The complex viscosities (|η*|) of the nanocomposites are larger than that of neat PA11 and decreased with increasing the temperature. POLYM. ENG. This study used in situ polymerization to prepare polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanocomposites incorporating Ethoquad‐modified montmorillonite (eMMT), unmodified hectorite (HCT), or phenyl hectorite (phHCT) particles to study the impact of platelet surface chemistry and loading on thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties. eMMT platelets reduced the PET crystallization rate without altering the ultimate degree of crystallinity. In contrast, HCT and phHCT platelets accelerated the polymer's crystallization rate and increased its crystallinity. DMA results for thermally‐quenched samples showed that as T increased past glass transition temperature (Tg), HCT and phHCT nanocomposites (and control PET) manifested precipitous drops in G′ followed by increasing G′ due to cold crystallization; in contrast, eMMT nanocomposites had much higher G′ values around Tg. This provides direct evidence of eMMT reinforcement in thermally‐quenched eMMT nanocomposites. These results suggest that eMMT has a strong, favorable interaction with PET, possibly through Ethoquad‐PET entanglement. HCT and phHCT have a fundamentally different interaction with PET that increases crystallization rate and Tg by 11 to 17°C. Water barrier improvement in eMMT nanocomposites agrees with previously published oxygen barrier results and can be rationalized in terms of a tortuous path gas barrier model. POLYM. ENG. In this article, a series of blends of monomer casting polyamide 6 and styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile (MCPA6/SAN) were prepared by in situ anionic ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactam. Their morphology and thermal behaviors were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), respectively. The SAN phase had much finer domain in MCPA6/SAN than that in the PA6/SAN blends prepared by melt blending of PA6 and SAN. All the melting and crystallization parameters of MCPA6/SAN blends decreased gradually with the increase of SAN content, while the melting temperature was almost unchanged. These results were due to the hydrolysis reaction of SAN that occurred during the anionic polymerization of ?‐caprolactam. In addition, WAXD results showed that only α crystal forms existed in the MCPA6/SAN blends. In addition, the mechanical property of MCPA6 was improved obviously by incorporating a certain amount of SAN. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 1357–1363, 2006  相似文献

Polyamide 11 (PA 11)/silica nanocomposites were prepared via in situ melt polymerization by the dispersion of hydrophobic silica in 11‐aminoundecanoic acid monomer. Their isothermal crystallization process and melting behaviors were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. The isothermal crystallization kinetics was analyzed by the Avrami equation. The obtained data showed that the model of nucleation and growth of PA 11 was not affected after the incorporation of silica and was a mixture with two‐dimensional, circular, three‐dimensional growth with thermal nucleation. Double and single melting peaks were observed depending on the crystallization temperature. The equilibrium melting point of samples was evaluated, and the spherulites growth kinetics parameters and fold surface free energy were further calculated according to the classical theories. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study focuses on the possibility of improving performance properties of polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) nanocomposites for engineering applications using nanoparticles. In this article, molybdenum disulfide/polydicyclopentadiene (MoS2/PDCPD) nanocomposites have been prepared by in situ ring‐opening metathesis polymerization using reaction injecting molding (RIM) process. To enhance the interfacial adhesion between the fillers and PDCPD matrix, the surface modified MoS2 nanoparticles hybridized with dialkyldithiophosphate (PyDDP) were successfully prepared by in situ surface grafting method. The effect of low MoS2 loadings (<3 wt %) on the mechanical and tribological behaviors of PDCPD was evaluated. The results indicated that the friction coefficient of the MoS2/PDCPD nanocomposites was obviously decreased and the wear resistance of nanocomposites was greatly improved by the addition of PyDDP‐hybridized MoS2 nanoparticles; meanwhile, the mechanical properties were also enhanced. The MoS2/PDCPD nanocomposites filled with 1 wt % PyDDP‐hybridized MoS2 exhibited the best mechanical and anti‐wear properties. The friction coefficient was shown to decrease by more than 40% compared to pure PDCPD by incorporating just 1 wt % hybridized MoS2 nanoparticles, and modest increase in modulus and strength was also observed. The reinforcing and wear‐resistant mechanisms of MoS2/PDCPD nanocomposites were investigated and discussed by scanning electron microscopy. The well interfacial compatibility between the particle/matrix interfaces played an important role for the improved mechanical and tribological properties of MoS2/PDCPD nanocomposites in very low MoS2 loadings. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (Nano)composites of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared by melt blending the polymer with natural Na+ montmorillonite and montmorillonite modified by hydrogenated tallowalkyl (HTA)-based quaternary ammonium cations, such as dimethyl 2-ethylhexyl HTA ammonium and methyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl) HTA ammonium. Microcomposites or nanocomposites were prepared depending on whether neat or modified montmorillonites was used, as assessed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical and thermal properties were studied as a function of the filler content by tensile testing, Izod impact testing, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The rheological behaviour at 80 °C was also analysed in relation to the structure and content of the layered silicate. Effect of exfoliated silicates on the mechanical properties, thermal stability and flame resistance of PCL was considered. Stiffness and thermal stability improved with the filler loading until a content of 5 wt%. Further loading resulted in the levelling off and possibly in a decrease of these properties. A marked charring effect was observed upon exposure to a flame.  相似文献

The present work describes the field‐emission properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated with conducting polymer polyaniline (PANi). MWCNTs/PANi nanocomposites have been prepared by ex‐ situ polymerization methods and inex‐ situ chemical polymerization and are analyzed by SEM and Raman spectroscopy. It is fairly clear from SEM images that PANi is coated on the surface of MWCNT. SEM image of PANi powder also shows that the powder obtained is PANi nanofibers. It is also observed from SEM images that the shell diameter of MWCNTs depends on PANi content in thenanocomposites. The average outer diameter of MWCNTs increases from 7–15 to 50–80 nm upon PANi coating. Field‐emission study shows that although there is decrease in the value of turnex‐on field Eto and increase in the value field enhancement factor β of the nanocomposites as we go from direct solid‐state mixing method to inex‐ situ chemical polymerization method, the parameters obtained by inex‐ situ polymerization chemical method shows superior field emission. The turn‐on field of the nanocomposites are between 2.5 and 4.5 V/μm and the field enhancement factors are significantly high, between 1.2 × 103 and 9.2 × 103 while. PANi nanofibers does not show any field emission. POLYM. COMPOS. 34:1298–1305, 2013. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Exfoliated poly(4, 4′‐oxybis(benzene)disulfide)/vermiculite (POBDS/VMT) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via in situ melt intercalation of cyclo(4, 4′‐oxybis(benzene)disulfide) oligomers (COBDS) into octadecylammonium‐exchanged VMT (organo‐VMT). The POBDS/VMT nanocomposites were melt fabricated in a two‐step process. First, the COBDS/VMT nanocomposite precursor was fabricated by melt delaminating organo‐VMT with COBDS at a temperature slightly higher than its melting point. Subsequently, exfoliated POBDS‐VMT nanocomposites can be prepared in situ via instant melt ring‐opening polymerization of the COBDS‐VMT nanocomposite precursor. The nanoscale dispersion of VMT layers within POBDS polymer was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. High molecular weight POBDS polymer was formed in a few minutes at the same time as the nanocomposite formation. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus and glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites are much higher than those of the POBDS matrix, even with a very small amount of VMT addition. This methodology provides a potential approach to synthesize high‐performance polymer/clay nanocomposites. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polybutadiene (PB)/Montmorillonite nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared by in situ polymerization through the anionic polymerization technique. The effects of treating method of organophilic MMT (OMMT), the type of OMMT, and the solvent used in polymerization were studied. The structure and properties of NCs were characterized using X‐ray Diffraction (XRD), transmission electron micrograph (TEM), H‐NMR spectrum, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The consumption of BuLi was varied with different treating methods. The molecular weight distribution of PB added with OMMT (DK1) was wide, and the molecular weight distribution became narrow when OMMT‐DK1B and DK4 were added. OMMT did not disperse stably in cyclohexane, but could form a homogeneous solution in toluene and xylene. XRD and TEM showed that exfoliated NCs were obtained by in situ polymerization through the anionic polymerization technique. From the H‐NMR spectrum of PB and PB/OMMT NCs, it could be seen that the content of 1, 2 units of PB increased ~100%, while 1, 4 units decreased when 6.2 wt % of OMMT was added. The results of DSC and DMA indicated that Tg and Tdc were increased when compared with those of PB. Both storage modulus and loss modulus were increased with the addition of OMMT, and tan δ was decreased. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 99: 3615–3621, 2006  相似文献

A [3‐t‐Bu‐2‐O? C6H3CH?N(C6F5)]2TiCl2 catalyst (bis(phenoxyimine)titanium dichloride complex – FI catalyst) was immobilized on disilanolisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OH‐POSS) to prepare ultrahigh molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocomposites during ethylene in situ polymerization. The dispersion state of POSS in the UHMWPE matrix was characterized by X‐ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the OH‐POSS achieved uniformed dispersion in the UHMWPE matrix, although its polarity was unmatched. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization behavior of the nanocomposites was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The crystallization rate of the nanocomposites was enhanced because of the incorporation of POSS during the isothermal crystallization. POSS acted as a nucleus for the initial nucleation and the subsequent growth of the crystallites. For nonisothermal studies, POSS showed an increase in the crystallinity. The crystallization rate of the nanocomposites decreased because the presence of POSS hindered the crystal growth. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40847.  相似文献

In this study, polystyrene (PS)/montmorillonite nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation, in situ polymerization, and masterbatch methods. In the masterbatch method, as the first step, a high clay content composite of PS–organoclay (masterbatch) was prepared by in situ polymerization, and then the prepared masterbatch was diluted to desired compositions with commercial PS in a twin‐screw extruder. The structure and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were examined. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the d‐spacing of the in situ formed nanocomposites increased from 32.9 Å for the organoclay powder to 36.3 and 36.8 Å respectively in nanocomposites containing 0.73 and 1.6 wt% organoclay, indicating intercalation. However, the d‐spacing of the other prepared materials remained nearly unchanged when compared with pure organoclay powder. Thus, at these low clay contents, in situ formed nanocomposites showed the best improvement in mechanical properties including tensile, impact strength, and Young's modulus. In situ polymerization method did not prove to be efficient at high clay loadings in terms of intercalation and mechanical properties. At high clay loadings, the effects of the three methods in promoting mechanical properties were not significantly different from each other. POLYM. In this study, amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐1,3/1,4‐cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (PETG)/organoclay nanocomposites was synthesized by the in situ intercalation polymerization of terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, 1,3/1,4‐cyclohexanedimethanol, and organoclay. The organoclay was obtained by modifying sodium montmorillonite (clay) with hexadecyl triphenylphosphonium bromide. The thermal, mechanical, optical, and gas barrier properties of these PETG nanocomposites with various organoclay contents (0–3 wt%) were discussed. The differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray analyses revealed that all of the nanocomposites were amorphous. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron micrographs showed that the organoclay was well dispersed in the polymer matrix, although some parts of the agglomerated layers remained on the scale of several hundreds of nanometers. The thermal stability and the mechanical property of the nanocomposites increased with organoclay content. The optical transmittances of nanocomposites that contained 0.5, 1, and 3 wt% of organoclay were 86.8%, 84.4%, and 77.4%, respectively. The oxygen transmission rate of the nanocomposite that contained 3 wt% of organoclay was about 50% of the PETG base polymer. POLYM. COMPOS., 2011. © 2010 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献
