Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

We prepared and then blended polyurethanes (PUs) with poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMAs) and TiO2 by varying the percentage compositions to form pellets. The chemistry of all of the blended samples was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The incorporation of TiO2 into the PU–PMMA matrix was confirmed with scanning electron microscopy analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis and compression testing was performed, and the results are discussed. The cytotoxicity level of the prepared blends displayed dependence on the composition ratio of the PU–PMMA blends. The results reveal that the optimum PU contents in the PU–PMMA–TiO2 blend were responsible for its better biocompatibility. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) was melt blended in a twin screw extruder using an ethylene‐methyl acrylate‐glycidyl methacrylate rubber as a toughener. PLA/rubber blends were immiscible as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Impact strength and ductility of PLA were improved by the addition of the rubber at the expense of strength and stiffness. An organo‐montmorillonite (OMMT) was used at 2 wt % to counteract the negative effect of the rubber on modulus, and balanced properties were observed at 10 wt % rubber content. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the formation of intercalated/exfoliated structure in the ternary nanocomposites. Thermal behavior analysis indicated that the degree of crystallinity is slightly affected by the clay and the rubber. Both the clay and the rubber decreased the crystallization temperature of PLA and acted as nucleating agents for PLA. The viscosity of the mixtures as measured by melt flow index was highly influenced by the rubber and the OMMT. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

Thermo-oxidative stability of PMMA-grafted SiO2 and PMMA/PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanocomposites was investigated by conventional non-isothermal gravimetric technique. It was interesting to find that PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited higher thermo-oxidative stability than that of PMMA. The apparent activation energy of PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles increased with the grafting ratio of PMMA from SiO2, which was estimated by Kissinger method. This indicates that the strong interactions existing between the grafted chains are responsible for the enhanced thermo-oxidative stability of PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles. However, the grafting ratio of PMMA from SiO2 in nanoparticles has only limited effect on the thermo-oxidative stability of PMMA/PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanocomposites due to a much lower content of grafted PMMA in the nanoparticles relative to PMMA. The increased thermo-oxidative stability of PMMA/PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanocomposites is possibly resulted from the increased SiO2 content in the nanocomposites, in which the grafting ratio of PMMA in PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles is kept almost as a constant. The glass transition temperature (T g) of PMMA/PMMA-grafted SiO2 nanocomposites is about 25 °C and is higher than that of PMMA. The grafting ratio of PMMA from SiO2 in the nanoparticles has no qualitative effects on the T g of the nanocomposites.  相似文献

The crystallinity and mechanical and thermal properties of polylactide (PLA)‐based biodegradable‐engineered plastic nanocomposites were determined. The nanocomposites were composed of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)‐toughened PLA, Talcum (Talc) and organic modified clay (montmorillonite; OMC). The tensile and flexural tests showed that PLA blended with 10 wt% TPU, 4 wt% Talc powder and 2 wt% OMC had the highest modulus and strength without a loss of elongation. The heat distortion temperature (HDT) tests demonstrated that the thermally treated PLA‐based nanocomposites had an HDT of nearly double the HDT for untreated specimens. An analysis of the polymer using scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the incorporation of inorganic fillers altered the heterogeneous morphology of the PLA/TPU blend. This study investigated the feasibility of using PLA‐based nanocomposites for practical use, including applications in the automotive and furniture industries. POLYM. The grafting of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer onto natural rubber using potassium persulfate as an initiator was carried out by emulsion polymerization. The rubber macroradicals reacted with MMA to form graft copolymers. The morphology of grafted natural rubber (GNR) was determined by transmission electron microscopy and it was confirmed that the graft copolymerization was a surface‐controlled process. The effects of the initiator concentration, reaction temperature, monomer concentration, and reaction time on the monomer conversion and grafting efficiency were investigated. The grafting efficiency of the GNR was determined by a solvent‐extraction technique. The natural rubber‐g‐methyl methacrylate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (NR‐g‐MMA/PMMA) blends were prepared by a melt‐mixing system. The mechanical properties and the fracture behavior of GNR/PMMA blends were evaluated as a function of the graft copolymer composition and the blend ratio. The tensile strength, tear strength, and hardness increased with an increase in PMMA content. The tensile fracture surface examined by scanning electron microscopy disclosed that the graft copolymer acted as an interfacial agent and gave a good adhesion between the two phases of the compatibilized blend. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nanocomposites of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) filled with 3 wt% of modified natural Algerian clay (AC; montmorillonite type) were prepared by either in situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile or a melt‐mixing process with preformed PMMA via twin‐screw extrusion. The organo‐modification of the AC montmorillonite was achieved by ion exchange of Na+ with octadecyldimethylhydroxyethylammonium bromide. Up to now, this AC montmorillonite has found applications only in the petroleum industry as a rheological additive for drilling muds and in water purification processes; its use as reinforcement in polymer matrices has not been reported yet. The modified clay was characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), which showed an important shift of the interlayer spacing after organo‐modification. The degree of dispersion of the clay in the polymer matrix and the resulting morphology of nanocomposites were evaluated using XRD and transmission electron microscopy. The resulting intercalated PMMA nanocomposites were analysed using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites was not significantly influenced by the presence of the modified clay while the thermal stability was considerably improved compared to unfilled PMMA. This Algerian natural montmorillonite can serve as reinforcing nanofiller for polymer matrices and is of real interest for the fabrication of nanocomposite materials with improved properties. A series of castor oil polyurethane—poly(methyl methacrylate) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN COPU/PMMA) were produced from castor oil, toluene diisocyanate, and methyl methacrylate. The properties and morphology of the IPNs were estimated. The adhesives based on the IPN COPU/PMMA prepolymer were prepared and the influence of the composition on the adhesion strength was studied. The experimental results showed that the adhesives have an effective adhesive power for metals and these adhesives have good prospects in a practical project. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of graphene nanosheets‐filled poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites (GNS/PMMA) is successfully prepared by an in situ fast polymerization method with graphene weight fractions from 0.1 to 2.0 wt %. In situ polymerization is effective in well dispersing of GNS in matrixes and suitable for both low and high content of GNS. The synthesis processes of polymer composites could be simplified and fast by using industrial grade graphene. The GNS fillers are found to disperse homogeneously in the PMMA matrix. The maximum electrical conductivity of the composites achieves 0.57 S m?1, with an extremely low percolation threshold of 0.3 wt %. The electrical conductivities are further predicted by percolation theory and found to agree well with the experimental results. The results indicate that the microstructures, thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of PMMA polymer are significantly improved by adding a low amount of graphene nanosheets. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the preparation and characterization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)‐filled thermoplastic polyurethane–urea (TPUU) and carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR) blend nanocomposites. The dispersion of the MWCNTs was carried out using a laboratory two roll mill. Three different loadings, that is, 1, 3, and 5 wt % of the MWCNTs were used. The electron microscopy image analysis proves that the MWCNTs are evenly dispersed along the shear flow direction. Through incorporation of the nanotubes in the blend, the tensile modulus was increased from 9.90 ± 0.5 to 45.30 ± 0.3 MPa, and the tensile strength at break was increased from 25.4 ± 2.5 to 33.0 ± 1.5 MPa. The wide angle X‐ray scattering result showed that the TPUU:XNBR blends were arranged in layered structures. These structures are formed through chemical reactions of ? NH group from urethane and urea with the carboxylic group on XNBR. Furthermore, even at a very low loading, the high degree of nanotubes dispersion results in a significant increase in the electrical percolation threshold. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) nanocomposites were successfully fabricated through melt compounding. Structural, electrical, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were systematically studied as a function of carbon nanotube (CNT) fraction. Electrical conductivity of the polymer was dramatically enhanced at low loading level of the nanotubes; the electrical percolation threshold lay between 1 and 2 wt % of the CNTs. Rheological properties of the PPS nanocomposites also showed a sudden change with the CNT fraction; the percolation threshold was in the range of 0–0.5 wt % of CNTs. The difference in electrical and rheological percolation threshold was mainly due to the different requirements needed in the carbon nanotube network in different stages. The crystallization and melting behavior of CNT‐filled PPS nanocomposites were studied with differential scanning calorimetry; no new crystalline form of PPS was observed in the nanocomposites, but the crystallization rate was reduced. The thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were also investigated, and both of them showed significant increase with CNT fraction. For 5 wt % of CNT‐filled PPS composite, the onset of degradation temperature increased by about 13.5°C, the modulus increased by about 33%, and tensile strength increased by about 172%. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐poly(L ‐lactic acid)‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymer was prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and properties of the copolymer were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR), thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic plot for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate using poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) as the initiator shows that the reaction time increases linearly with ln[M]0/[M]. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve grafted chains with well‐defined molecular weights, and block copolymers with narrowed molecular weight distributions. The thermal stability of PLLA is improved by copolymerization. A new wash‐extraction method for removing copper from the ATRP has also exhibits satisfactory results. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nanocomposites reinforced with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared through melt compounding in a twin‐screw extruder. The presence of MWCNTs, which acted as good nucleating agents, enhanced the crystallization of PET through heterogeneous nucleation. The incorporation of a small quantity of MWCNTs improved the thermal stability of the PET/MWCNT nanocomposites. The mechanical properties of the PET/MWCNT nanocomposites increased with even a small quantity of MWCNTs. There was a significant dependence of the rheological properties of the PET/MWCNT nanocomposites on the MWCNT content. The MWCNT loading increased the shear‐thinning nature of the polymer‐nanocomposite melt. The storage modulus and loss modulus of the PET/MWCNT nanocomposites increased with increasing frequency, and this increment effect was more pronounced at lower frequencies. At higher MWCNT contents, the dominant nanotube–nanotube interactions led to the formation of interconnected or networklike structures of MWCNTs in the PET/MWCNT nanocomposites. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multi‐walled carbon nanotube was modified with polymethyl methacrylate (MWCNT‐PMMA) by in situ solution radical polymerization in the presence of 2,2′‐Azobis (isobutyronitrile) as an initiator. The products with different addition of methyl methacrylate (MMA) were pressed into slices to prepare specimens for electrical conductivity testing. It was found that the MWCNT‐PMMA nanocomposites demonstrate excellent electrical conductivity. To investigate the microsphere morphology and the colloidal surfactant of MWCNTs in MWCNT‐PMMA composites, samples were submitted to scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The thermogravimetric analysis of the prepared composites confirmed that MWCNTs as a thermal stabilizer for PMMA, which could have a wide range of potential applications, such as in catalysts, sensors, environmental remediation, and energy storage. Two series of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) based biocomposites with different MMA additions and MWCNT‐PMMA composites contents were prepared with twin‐screw extruding and injection molding. The results show the mechanical properties changed a little with the MMA and MWCNT‐PMMA composites contents increasing, which suggested the well compatibility between MWCNT‐PMMA composites and PLA. Interpenetrating networks (IPNs) of polybutadiene‐based polyurethane (PU) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were synthesized. The effect of the incorporation of 2% glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2‐HEMA) on the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of IPNs was investigated. Both 2‐HEMA and GMA led to improvements in these properties. However, 2‐HEMA‐containing IPNs showed somewhat better tensile strength, elongation, and damping characteristics. The morphology of IPNs containing 2‐HEMA showed better mixing of the components. The improvement in the properties was observed for up to 40% PMMA in the IPNs. Differential scanning calorimetry thermograms showed the presence of three glass transitions. The third glass‐transition temperature was explained by possible grafting of methyl methacrylate onto PU. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 1576–1585, 2002  相似文献

The dynamic relaxation characteristics of poly(ether imide) and poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites based on native and surface-modified (i.e., hydrophobic) fumed silicas were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis and dielectric spectroscopy. The nanocomposites displayed a dual glass transition behavior in the dynamic mechanical studies encompassing a bulk polymer glass transition (close to Tg for the unfilled polymer), and a second, higher-temperature transition reflecting relaxation of polymer chain segments constrained owing to their proximity to the particle surface. The position and intensity of the higher-temperature transition varied with particle loading and surface chemistry, and reflected the relative populations of segments constrained or immobilized at the particle-polymer interface. Dielectric measurements, which were used to probe the time-temperature response across the local sub-glass relaxations, indicated no variation in relaxation characteristics with particle loading.  相似文献

The dependence of the temperature coefficient of the refractive index on the azobenzene chromophore concentrations was studied experimentally. A poly(methyl methacrylate)‐intercalated graphite oxide/poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposite was prepared by emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of graphite oxide (GO). GO was synthesized by the oxidization of natural graphite powder with KMnO4 in concentrated sulfuric acid. The functional groups and microstructure of the oxidized graphite and the composite were carefully characterized by use of X‐ray diffraction, infrared, transmission electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. The structure and the thermodegradation behavior of both poly(methyl methacrylate)‐co‐poly(3‐tri(methoxysilyil)propyl methacrylate) polymer modified with silyl groups and of intercalated poly(methyl methacrylate)‐co‐poly(3‐tri(methoxysilyil)propyl methacrylate)/Cloisite 15A? nanocomposite have been in situ probed. The structural feature were comparatively studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13C and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. The intercalation of polymer in the interlayer galleries was evidenced by the increment of the basal distance from 31 to 45 Å. The variation of this interlayer distance as function of temperature was followed by in situ SAXS. Pristine polymer decomposition pathway depends on the atmosphere, presenting two steps under air and three under N2. The nanocomposites are more stable than polymer, and this thermal improvement is proportional to the clay loading. The experimental results indicate that clay nanoparticles play several different roles in polymer stabilization, among them, diffusion barrier, charring, and suppression of degradation steps by chemical reactions between polymer and clay. Charring is atmosphere dependent, occurring more pronounced under air. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2013. © 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) nanocomposites with sepiolite in pristine and silylated form were prepared using the solution intercalation method and characterized by the measurements of XRD, TEM, FTIR‐ATR, TG/DTG, and DSC. The TEM analysis indicated that the volume fraction of fibers in sepiolite decreased and the fiber bundles dispersed in PEMA and PHEMA at a nanometer scale. These results regarding TEM micrographs were in agreement with the data obtained by XRD. The increase in thermal stability of nanocomposites of PEMA is higher than that of PHEMA according to the data obtained from TG curves. The DTG analysis revealed that sepiolite/modified sepiolite caused some changes, as confirmed by FTIR in the thermal degradation mechanism of the polymers. Tg temperatures of PEMA and PHEMA usually increased upon the addition of sepiolite/modified sepiolite. In addition, modification of sepiolite with 3‐APTS had a slight influence on thermal properties of the nanocomposites. POLYM. COMPOS., 2009. © 2008 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献
