To assess the feasibility of the 31% Pu-MOX fuel rod design of reduced-moderation water reactor (RMWR) in terms of thermal and mechanical behaviors, a single rod assumed to be irradiated in the core of RMWR up to 106 GWd/tHM has been analyzed by a fuel performance code FEMAXI-RM which is an extended version of FEMAXI-6 code. In the analysis, design specifications of fuel rod and irradiation conditions have been input, and available models of both MOX fuel and UO2 fuel have been used as appropriate. The results are: fission gas release is several tens of percent, rod internal pressure does not exceed the coolant pressure, and the highest fuel center temperature is 2400 K, while cladding diameter increase caused by pellet swelling is within 1% strain. These predictions suggest that the MOX fuel rod integrity will be held during irradiation in RMWR, though actual behavior of MOX pellet swelling and cladding oxidation require to be investigated in detail.

Mechanical load on cladding induced by fuel swelling in a high burn-up BWR type rod was analyzed by a fuel performance code FEMAXI-6. The code was developed for the analysis of LWR fuel rod behaviors in normal operation and transient conditions using finite element method (FEM).During a power ramp for the high burn-up rod, instantaneous pellet swelling can significantly exceed the level that is predicted by a “steady-rate” swelling model, causing a large circumferential strain in cladding. This phenomenon was simulated by a new swelling model to take into account the fission gas bubble growth. As a result it was found that the new model can give reasonable predictions on cladding diameter expansion in comparison with PIE data. The bubble growth model assumes that the equilibrium state equation holds for a bubble under external pressure, and simultaneous solution is obtained with both bubble size determination equation and diffusion equation of fission gas atoms. In addition, a pellet-clad bonding model which has been incorporated in the code to assume solid mechanical coupling between pellet outer surface and cladding inner surface predicted the generation of bi-axial stress state in the cladding during ramp.

During first rise to power in Power Water Reactor, fuel pellets crack because of thermal expansion. The phenomena of pellet cracking and fragments relocation have a major influence on rod behaviour and especially on the cladding behaviour in the case of pellet–cladding interaction.This article presents the modeling used to take into account the fragmented state of the pellet in the EDF fuel rod thermo-mechanical code, CYRANO3®. The aim is to simulate more realistic stress and strain fields in the pellet.The investigated method consists in adding parameters in the 1D finite elements calculations in order to integrate the multi-dimensional fragmentation effects in the axisymmetrical 1D code CYRANO3®. These parameters modify the material behaviour by describing the fuel as an anisotropic damaged material. The modeling accounts for the opening and closing of radial pellet cracks. It has been implemented in the code for elastic and viscoplastic fuel behaviours.

During reactor operation, many complex changes occur in fuel rod which affects its thermal, mechanical and material properties. These changes also affect the reactor response to the transient and accident situations. Realistic simulation of fuel rod behavior under transients such as reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) is of great significance. In this study, thermal hydraulic analysis code THEATRe (Thermal Hydraulic Engineering Analysis Tool in Real-time) has been modified by addition of fuel rod behavior models for dynamic simulation of nuclear reactor. Transient changes in gas-gap parameters were taken into account by modeling the gas-gap behavior. Thermo-mechanical behavior of fuel rod is modeled to take into account the thermal, elastic and plastic deformation. To simulate RIA, point reactor kinetics model is also incorporated in the THEATRe code. To demonstrate the transient fuel rod behavior, AP1000 reactor is modeled and three hypothetical RIA cases are simulated. The RIA is considered at three different reactor power levels, i.e. 100, 50 and 1% of nominal power. The investigated parameters are fuel temperature, cladding stress and strain, fuel and cladding thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient in gas-gap. Modified code calculates the fuel rod temperatures according to updated fuel, clad and gas-gap parameters at the onset of steady-state operation and during the transient. The modified code provides lower steady-state fuel temperature as compared to the original code. Stress and strain analyses indicate that the hoop and radial strain is higher at high power locations of the fuel rod; therefore, gap closure process will initially occur in the central portion of the fuel rod and it should be given more emphasis in the safety analysis of the fuel rod and nuclear reactor during accidents and transients.

A precise calculation of the stress distribution within the Zircaloy cladding of a water-cooled reactor fuel rod subjected to a power increase is a complex problem which, in general, requires a computer code to integrate the behaviour of both the fuel and cladding. This paper develops a simplified model which decouples the clad and fuel pellet analyses, by considering two extremes of fuel pellet mechanical behaviour, which lead to two widely different boundary conditions at the pellet-clad interface. An axisymmetric fuel rod code can be used to give the mean cladding hoop strain imposed by the thermal expansion of the pellet, and when the interfacial friction coefficient is 0.5, this information along with the frictional boundary condition can be used to determine the stress distribution within the cladding near a fuel pellet crack. Results from this simplified approach, which does not involve an integrated code, are used to study the growth of stress corrosion cracks within the cladding.

The supercritical-water-cooled power reactor (SCPR) is expected to reduce power costs compared with those of current LWRs because of its high thermal efficiency and simple reactor system. The high thermal efficiency is obtained by supercritical pressure water cooling. The fuel cladding surface temperature increases locally due to a synergistic effect from the increased coolant temperature, the expanded flow deflection due to coolant density change and the decreased heat transfer coefficient, if the coolant flow distribution is non-uniform in the fuel assembly. Therefore, the SCPR fuel assembly is designed using a subchannel analysis code based on the SILFEED code for BWRs.

The SCPR fuel assembly has many square-shaped water rods. The fuel rods are arranged around these water rods. The fuel rod pitch and diameter are 11.2 mm and 10.2 mm, respectively. Since coolant flow distribution in the fuel assembly strongly depends on the gap width between the fuel rod and the water rod, the proper gap width is examined. Subchannel analysis shows that the coolant flow distribution becomes uniform when the gap width is 1.0 mm. The maximum fuel cladding surface temperature is lower than 600°C and the temperature margin of the fuel cladding is increased in the design.

For RIA-simulated experiments in the NSRR with high-burnup PWR fuel and BWR fuel, numerical analyses were performed to evaluate the temporal changes of profiles of temperature and thermal stress in pellet induced by pulse power, using the RANNS code. The pre-pulse states of rods were calculated using the fuel performance code FEMAXI-6 along the irradiation histories in commercial reactors and the results were fed to the RANNS analysis as initial conditions of the rod. One-dimensional FEM was applied to the mechanical analysis of the fuel rod, and the calculated cladding permanent strain was compared with the measured value to confirm the validity of the PCMI calculation. The calculated changes in the profiles of temperature and stress in the pellet during an early transient phase were compared with the measured data such as the internal gas pressure rise, cracks and grain structure in the post-test pellet, anddiscussed in terms of PCMI and grain separation. The analyses indicate that the pellet cracking appearances coincided with the calculated tensile stress state and that the compressive thermal stress suppresses the fission gas bubble expansion leading to grain separation.

The concept of “containment” is to provide a series of physical barriers between the radioactive products of the fission process and the public. All nuclear reactors have several such barriers and LMFBRs have more than most. These barriers are, successively:
1. fuel, which retains fission products;
2. fuel cladding, which encloses the fuel;
3. sodium coolant, which absorbs fission products released through fuel caldding;
4. primary coolant boundary, which has energy absorption and leakage control capabilities;
5. containment building, hereafter referred to as containment, which provides the final engineered barrier for control of radioactive releases;
6. exclusion distance, which provides space for natural attenuation of radioactive releases before reaching the public.
These barriers, along with the design approaches and features which protect their integrity under normal and accident conditions, assure that the public is adequately protected from the potential hazards of radioactivity residing in the core. It is only in the case of hypothesized core disruptive accidents (HCDAs) that these successive barriers can be sufficiently threatened as to pose a significant threat to the public. These HCDAs involve an extremely low probability sequence of successive failures resulting in core cooling imbalances which lead to fuel overheating. Under such conditions, the fuel and cladding barriers can be lost and energy sources can be generated which threaten the primary coolant boundary and containment. This paper addresses current perspectives on containment of HCDAs with emphasis on the approach and programs in the US.

The FRED fuel rod code is being developed for thermal and mechanical simulation of fast breeder reactor (FBR) and light-water reactor (LWR) fuel behaviour under base-irradiation and accident conditions. The current version of the code calculates temperature distribution in fuel rods, stress-strain condition of cladding, fuel deformation, fuel-cladding gap conductance, and fuel rod inner pressure. The code was previously evaluated in the frame of two OECD mixed plutonium-uranium oxide (MOX) fuel performance benchmarks and then integrated into PSI's FAST code system to provide the fuel rod temperatures necessary for the neutron kinetics and thermal-hydraulic modules in transient calculations. This paper briefly overviews basic models and material property database of the FRED code used to assess the fuel behaviour under steady-state conditions. In addition, the code was used to simulate the IFA-503.2 tests, performed at the Halden reactor for two PWR and twelve VVER fuel samples under base-irradiation conditions. This paper presents the results of this simulation for two cases using a code-to-data comparison of fuel centreline temperatures, internal gas pressures, and fuel elongations. This comparison has demonstrated that the code adequately describes the important physical mechanisms of the uranium oxide (UOX) fuel rod thermal performance under steady-state conditions. Future activity should be concentrated on improving the model and extending the validation range, especially to the MOX fuel steady-state and transient behaviour.

Conditions leading to AIC control rod damage during a loss of coolant accident in a PWR geometry, even in absence of violation of the LOCA licensing criteria, are investigated using several versions of the ICARE2 code (IPSN). Before being applied to the reactor case, the code and the modelling procedure are validated against the out-of-pile severe fuel damage experiment CORA-5. Three particular initial configurations are considered for the subsequent control rod damage analysis: nominal control rod and guide tube geometry, zircaloy guide tube bowing with concurrent cladding thickness reduction and finally control rod cladding perforation. For each of these cases the thermal, mechanical and chemical behaviour is presented. Phenomena such as ballooning and cladding failure of fuel rods, guide tube failure, melt relocation and final fluid channel cross-section modification are described. Finally, the conclusions of numerous sensitivity studies are discussed and some suggestions are given for possible improvements of the ICARE2 code.

In order to promote a better understanding of failure mechanisms of high-burnup pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuels under reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) conditions, stress biaxiality in cladding has been estimated for the pellet-cladding (PC) mechanical interaction (PCMI) phase. The estimation was based on an analysis of the transient elongations of a pellet stack and a cladding tube measured in RIA-simulating experiments in the nuclear safety research reactor (NSRR) using the RANNS code. Stress biaxiality in the high-burnup PWR fuel cladding during the PCMI phase has been estimated to be 0.7–0.8, on average, at the mid-wall of the cladding. A comparison with fresh fuel test results and a sensitivity analysis showed that the effects of burnup and pulse width on cladding stress biaxiality are less than 10% for the investigated range. The present analysis also indicated that PC friction is strong, and that the cladding constraint on pellet stack elongation is significant irrespective of burnup. Therefore, it is recommended that strong PC friction be assumed, which is similar to the mechanical bonding condition, and that fuel pellets be treated as deformable materials in models of fuel behavior during the PCMI phase.

Observed collapses in pressurized water reactor fuel rods have been attributed to the radiation enhanced creep of Zircaloy cladding into regions where separations in the fuel pellet stack have occurred. A computer code, COLAPX, has been written to determine the growth of ovality and the ultimate collapse of fuel rod cladding under reactor operating conditions. This paper describes the theoretical bases of this code, the finite element formulation used, the constitutive relations between the displacement fields and the element forces, and the radiation, temperature and stress dependent material model for creep of Zircaloy tubing. Comparisons of the creep rate predictions and of the ovality predictions with data from irradiated tubes and fuel cladding are presented.

In-pile experiments of fresh fuel rods under reactivity initiated accident (RIA) conditions have been performed in the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute in order to understand the basic pellet cladding mechanical interaction (PCMI) behavior. Rapid fuel pellet expansion due to a power excursion would cause radial and longitudinal deformation of the cladding. This PCMI could be one of the possible incipient failure modes of an embrittled cladding of a high burnup fuel under the RIA conditions.

Basic PCMI behavior was studied by measuring cladding deformation of a fresh fuel rod without complicated irradiation effects. The transient elongation measurements of the fuel with two kinds of gap width indicated not only PCMI-induced cladding elongation, but also reduction of the pellet stack displacement by the cladding constraint. In the tests under a high-pressure and high-temperature condition simulating an operation condition of BWRs, additional ridge-type cladding deformation was generated due to the axial collapse of the cladding. A preliminary analysis for interpretation of the tests was made using a computer code for the transient analysis of fuel rods, FRAP-T6.

A few thrice-burned Zry-4 fuel assemblies which were loaded in one of the PWRs operating in Korea were found to be failed due to PCI during a power ramp following a rector trip, while thrice-burned Zr–Nb fuel assemblies and twice-burned Zry-4 ones were intact. To investigate the effect of fuel rod oxide thickness on power ramp-induced cladding hoop stress, three intact fuel rods were selected, which include an intact twice-burned Zry-4 fuel rod, an intact thrice-burned Zr-4 fuel rod and an intact thrice-burned Zr–Nb fuel rod. With the use of a fuel performance analysis code, burnup-dependent steady-state cladding stress and ramp power-dependent cladding stresses at the power-ramped burnup were predicted for the three intact fuel rods. It was found that the cladding oxide thickness has a considerable effect on the ramp power-dependent cladding hoop stresses. In addition, the cladding maximum stress of the thrice-burned Zry-4 fuel rod with 125 μm oxide thickness exceeded an ultimate cladding tensile strength of the Zry-4 cladding when the pellet–clad friction coefficient-dependent cladding stress concentration ratio was considered. However, the thrice-burned Zr–Nb fuel rod with 50 μm oxide thickness was evaluated to have a considerable margin against the power ramp-induced PCI failure.

In the water pressurised nuclear reactors, the fuel rod cladding is the first barrier against radioactive isotopes release. Its integrity must be demonstrated all along the fuel rod irradiation with increasing strenuous operating conditions. This paper deals with a study made with Electricité de France (EDF) in order to improve the understanding and modelling of the thermomechanical behaviour of fuel rods under these more arduous conditions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the separate influences of structural and material parameters variability on Pellet–Cladding Interaction (PCI). The following parameters have been tested by 3D simulations for a common ramping condition: axial and radial pellet cracks numbers, pellet fragment size, relative fragments displacement, non-symmetrical configuration, pellet–pellet friction and pellet–cladding friction. The second part of the article deals with the development of a model, which gives a better assessment of cladding stress concentration near radial fuel cracks. The implementation in the 1D fuel rod EDF code CYRANO3 and the validation of the model are presented.
