Mitochondria fulfill important functions in photosynthetic cells not only in darkness but also in light. Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation is probably the main mechanism to supply ATP for extrachloroplastic functions in both conditions. Furthermore, during photosynthesis mitochondrial electron transport is important for regulation of the redox balance in the cell. This makes mitochondrial function an integral part of a flexible metabolic system in the photosynthetic cell. This flexibility is probably very important in order to allow the metabolism to override disturbances caused by the changing environment which plants are adapted to.     

Volatile Organic Compounds in Storm Water from a Parking Lot

A mass balance approach was used to determine the most important nonpoint source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in storm water from an asphalt parking lot without obvious point sources (e.g., gasoline stations). The parking lot surface and atmosphere are important nonpoint sources of VOCs, with each being important for different VOCs. The atmosphere is an important source of soluble, oxygenated VOCs (e.g., acetone), and the parking lot surface is an important source for the more hydrophobic VOCs (e.g., benzene). VOCs on the parking lot surface appear to be concentrated in oil and grease and organic material in urban particles (e.g., vehicle soot). Except in the case of spills, asphalt does not appear to be an important source of VOCs. The uptake isotherm of gaseous methyl tert-butyl ether on urban particles indicates a mechanism for dry deposition of VOCs from the atmosphere. This study demonstrated that a mass balance approach is a useful means of understanding non-point-source pollution, even for compounds such as VOCs, which are difficult to sample.

Effects of oral 5-hydroxy-tryptophan on energy intake and macronutrient selection in non-insulin dependent diabetic patients

Hospital-based occupational tuberculosis (TB) control programs have four basic components: rapid detection of TB disease in presenting patients; use of environmental controls, including personal respiratory protection; periodic tuberculin skin testing; and administration of prophylactic antibiotic therapy to newly infected employees. This article assesses which component is the most important in reducing TB disease risk among health care workers. A quantitative framework for estimating disease risk is developed, and two important results are described. First, the rapid identification of TB disease in presenting patients is the most important element in the overall program. Second, once TB disease has been identified, the use of highly efficient environmental controls (which include respiratory protection) becomes the most important element; these controls are especially important for procedures such as bronchoscopy and autopsy, which can aerosolize large numbers of viable Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli.

In summary, when approaching the patient who has had a spell of unknown cause, the most important differentiation to make is between a syncopal episode and a seizure. The history and physical examination will provide the diagnosis in approximately 85% of cases. Once the physician has some idea of which path to pursue, it is important to order the tests in a directed fashion tailored to the patient's presentation. A shotgun approach is neither warranted nor beneficial and is best avoided when possible. Some patients will remain without a diagnosis despite a complete workup, thus it is important for the emergency physician to rule out the life-threatening possibilities and to arrange the appropriate long-term follow-up for the patient with their primary care provider.

Confirmation of machine-induced load oscillations during superplastic tensile testing

The mechanical characterization of superplastic materials plays an important role in aiding the understanding of deformation mechanisms as well as in establishing properties critical to developing forming parameters for the fabrication of components. The flow stress of such materials is a strong function of strain rate and temperature, and it is generally found that strain hardening occurs as well. However, in the measurement of the flow stress, it is often found that rapidly oscillating loads occur during straining. Such load oscillations can have important implications in the identification of deformation mechanisms, if such oscillations are caused by the deforming material, and are otherwise important in establishing test procedures and test equipment if related to the these.

The effects of right-hemisphere brain damage on patients'' use of terms of personal reference

The majority of patients with lung cancer have disseminated disease at the time of presentation. For the minority of patients with disease localized to the chest, the concept of staging becomes particularly important because it has a major impact on the treatment plan. Guided by findings on the computed tomographic scan, mediastinoscopy remains the definitive invasive staging procedure to document unequivocally the involvement of the mediastinal lymph nodes. Equally as important is the documentation of absence of disease in contralateral lymph nodes. Patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer, especially those with involvement of mediastinal lymph nodes (N2), are candidates for a multimodality approach to treatment involving either chemotherapy alone or in combination with radiation therapy. Surgical excision may be important in the management of these patients after an induction regimen. If surgical excision is performed, complete excision is the single most important factor. Postoperative adjuvant therapy may reduce the incidence of local recurrence but has not been shown to improve survival.

In vivo inter-organ protein metabolism of the splanchnic region and muscle during trauma, cancer and enteral nutrition

The study of protein kinetics has entered a new era by the recognition that whole body protein turnover only poorly reflects the true events occurring in several organs and with regard to the multitude of proteins present in the body. It is also increasingly recognized that the simultaneous synthesis and degradation of proteins is important in regulation and adaptation during several metabolic conditions like starvation, feeding, after trauma, and during exercise. Especially important is the recognition that the kinetics of individual proteins may change in opposite directions, thereby leading to fluxes of alpha-amino-nitrogen that serve to adapt to and survive a changing environment. At present, much emphasis is put upon molecular biological regulation. However, it is important that the metabolic processes that occur in the intact organism are still poorly defined. New technology allows the exploration of these processes, which should therefore prompt the initiation of further research in this area.
