In order to study the use of a local approach to predict crack‐initiation life on notches in mechanical components under multiaxial fatigue conditions, the study of the local cyclic elasto‐plastic behaviour and the selection of an appropriate multiaxial fatigue model are essential steps in fatigue‐life prediction. The evolution of stress–strain fields from the initial state to the stabilized state depends on the material type, loading amplitude and loading paths. A series of biaxial tension–compression tests with static or cyclic torsion were carried out on a biaxial servo‐hydraulic testing machine. Specimens were made of an alloy steel 42CrMo4 quenched and tempered. The shear stress relaxations of the cyclic tension–compression with a steady torsion angle were observed for various loading levels. Finite element analyses were used to simulate the cyclic behaviour and good agreement was found. Based on the local stabilized cyclic elastic–plastic stress–strain responses, the strain‐based multiaxial fatigue damage parameters were applied and correlated with the experimentally obtained lives. As a comparison, a stress‐invariant‐based approach with the minimum circumscribed ellipse (MCE) approach for evaluating the effective shear stress amplitude was also applied for fatigue life prediction. The comparison showed that both the equivalent strain range and the stress‐invariant parameter with non‐proportional factors correlated well with the experimental results obtained in this study.  相似文献

This paper deals with the fatigue behaviour of a short fibre reinforced thermoplastic under multi‐axial cyclic stress. Based on experimental results on notched and plain specimens, limits of existing methods for the fatigue life estimation in the design process of components exposed to complex multi‐axial loads were investigated. During the manufacturing process of short fibre reinforced thermoplastic components, a moderately anisotropic behaviour in stiffness and strength arises. Because of the material's anisotropy, classical failure hypotheses for the assessment of multiaxial load cases do not apply. In this study, a fatigue failure hypothesis was implemented that assesses the stress components in accordance with the correlating fatigue strengths in the material coordinate system, considering potential interaction between the stress components. Striving for a verified multi‐usable fatigue life assessment method, multiaxial load cases were examined experimentally. The experimental results on unnotched and notched specimens and the fatigue life estimation on the basis of the Tsai‐Wu‐failure hypothesis will be presented.  相似文献

The fatigue behaviour of an Al–Mg–Si alloy was studied using notched specimens. Fatigue tests were conducted at two stress ratios R= 0 and R= 0.4 on thin plates with a central hole. Constant and block variable loading amplitudes were applied to the specimens using a servo‐hydraulic machine. The applicability of the local strain approach method to the prediction of the fatigue life was investigated for this type of discontinuity. Two methods, the equivalent strain energy density approach and a modified stress–strain intensity field approach, were used to predict the fatigue strength. For the second one an elastic–plastic finite element analysis was carried out in order to obtain the local strain and stress distributions near the notch root. Based on Miner's rule an equivalent stress was used to correlate the fatigue lives for the variable amplitude histories. The experimental results were compared with the predicted results obtained by the two methods investigated and better agreement was found with the stress–strain field intensity approach, while the strain energy approach gave more conservative results. Miner's rule gives a good correlation between the variable amplitude and constant amplitude results.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of shot peening on the low‐cycle fatigue performance of a low‐pressure steam turbine blade material. The finite element model incorporating shot‐peening effects, which has been introduced in part I, has been used to predict the stabilised stress/strain state in shot‐peened samples during fatigue loading. The application of this model has been extended to different notched geometries in this study. Based on the modelling results, both the Smith–Watson–Topper and Fatemi–Socie critical plane fatigue criteria have been used to predict the fatigue life of shot‐peened samples (treated with two different peening intensities) with varying notched geometries. A good agreement between experiments and predictions was obtained. The application of a critical distance method considering the stress and strain hardening gradients near the shot‐peened surface has been found to improve the life prediction results. The effects of surface defects on the accuracy of life predictions using the proposed method were also discussed.  相似文献

An innovative numerical methodology is presented for fatigue lifetime estimation of notched bodies experiencing multiaxial cyclic loadings. In the presented methodology, an evaluation approach of the local nonproportionality factor F for notched specimens, which defines F as the ratio of the pseudoshear strain range at 45° to the maximum shear plane and the maximum shear strain range, is proposed and discussed deeply. The proposed evaluation method is incorporated into the material cyclic stress‐strain equation for purpose of describing the nonproportional hardening behavior for some material. The comparison between multiaxial elastic‐plastic finite element analysis (FEA) and experimentally measured strains for S460N steel notched specimens shows that the proposed nonproportionality factor estimation method is effective. Subsequently, the notch stresses and strains calculated utilizing multiaxial elastic‐plastic FEA are used as input data to the critical plane‐based fatigue life prediction methodology. The prediction results are satisfactory for the 7050‐T7451 aluminum alloy and GH4169 superalloy notched specimens under multiaxial cyclic loading.  相似文献

Evaluation of the thermo‐mechanical behaviour and prediction of the service life of cast aluminium alloys are important for the design of automobile engine cylinder heads. In this study, cast Al alloy specimens are extracted from cylinder heads and subjected to in‐phase thermo‐mechanical cyclic loading. The hysteresis curves related to stress and strain were recorded under the individual thermo‐mechanical loading conditions. The number cycles to failure corresponding to multiple mechanical strain and temperature ranges were obtained. It is found that the cyclic stress amplitude decreases and the cyclic softening rate increases with increasing maximum temperature rise. A modified fatigue‐creep model based on energy conservation has been developed for prediction of the fatigue life of cylinder heads. The proposed method shows good agreement with the well‐established Ostergren model and low standard deviations. In summary, the proposed method described in this study provides an option for prediction of the thermo‐mechanical behaviour of metals.  相似文献

This paper proposes an alternating bending technique for evaluating fatigue life in the low‐to‐high cycle fatigue regime. A method was developed for estimating the stress, elastic strain, and plastic strain ranges of a plastically deformed specimen subjected to alternating bending with consideration of stress and strain distributions. To evaluate its effectiveness, fatigue testing was conducted using a specimen made of a steel used for pressure vessels. The stress, elastic strain, and plastic strain ranges could be obtained during cyclic bending. The elastic strain amplitude life and plastic strain amplitude life curves were linear in a log–log plot in the low‐to‐high cycle fatigue regime. Hence, the fatigue life under alternating bending could be evaluated using the proposed strain‐based approach. However, these curves could not be predicted using equations with parameters obtained from tensile testing, such as the universal slope method, due to the strain gradient in the specimen.  相似文献

This paper presents a damage mechanics method applied successfully to assess fatigue life of notched specimens with plastic deformation at the notch tip. A damage‐coupled elasto‐plastic constitutive model is employed in which nonlinear kinematic hardening is considered. The accumulated damage is described by a stress‐based damage model and a plastic strain‐based damage model, which depend on the cyclic stress and accumulated plastic strain, respectively. A three‐dimensional finite element implementation of these models is developed to predict the crack initiation life of notched specimens. Two cases, a notched plate under tension‐compression loadings and an SAE notched shaft under bending‐torsion loadings including non‐proportional loadings, are studied and the predicted results are compared with experimental data.  相似文献

Comparative Investigations on Service Life Assessment of Notched Specimens Based on the Local Strain and the Nominal Stress Approach to Fatigue for a Steel SAE 1017 It is still unclear whether the strain based approach to fatigue or the stress based approach to fatigue should be preferred for service life assessment of notched components. In order to clarify the similarities and differences between these concepts stress and strain controlled fatigue experiments have been performed with notched specimens. It has been found, that stress and strain controlled fatigue testing results in the same number of cycles until failure. Essential for this correlation is that the cyclic stable strain amplitude at the notch root is taken for the entry into the strain‐life diagram in both cases. Starting from an elastic‐plastic analysis of the material behaviour at the notch root it is shown, how the strain‐life curve can be converted into a stress‐life curve. Based on that result service‐life is calculated from both approaches mentioned above. The calculation gives nearly the same service‐lives for both cases, but overestimates the measured data. It becomes obvious, that a S‐N curve determined under one‐level loading doesn’t provide a proper basis for service life assessment. While strain or stress‐life curves always contain crack initiation phase as well as crack propagation phase, the fatigue process under irregular loads is mainly governed by crack propagation. As a consequence, the damage per cycle is underestimated for loads near the fatigue limit, if Miner’s rule is used.  相似文献

The fatigue behaviour of base metal and weld joints of 1Cr–18Ni–9Ti stainless steel has been studied under uniaxial, torsional and 90° out‐of‐phase loading. A significant degree of additional hardening is found for both base metal and weld metal under 90° out‐of‐phase loading. Both base metal and weld metal have the same cyclic stable stress–strain relationship under torsional cyclic loading and 90° out‐of‐phase cyclic loading. Base metal exhibits higher cyclic stress than weld metal under uniaxial loading, and Young's modulus and yield stress of weld metal are smaller than those of base metal. Weld metal exhibited lower fatigue resistance than base metal under uniaxial and torsional loading, but no significant difference was found between the two materials under 90° out‐of‐phase loading. A large scatter of fatigue life is observed for weld metal, perhaps because of heterogeneity of the microstructure. The Wang–Brown (WB) damage parameter and the Fatemi–Socie (FS) damage parameter, both based on the shear critical plane approach, were evaluated relative to the fatigue data obtained.  相似文献

Fatigue failure, ratcheting behaviour and influence of pre‐fatigue on fatigue behaviour were investigated under uniaxial cyclic loading for CK45 steel at room temperature. The fatigue life was recorded for various stress ratios, and then, three mean stress models were considered. The Walker model showed an acceptable accuracy in comparison with Smith–Watson–Topper and Park et al. models. The ratcheting strains were measured for various loading conditions in order to evaluate the impact of mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio on ratcheting behaviour. The experimental results showed that the ratcheting strain increased with increasing mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio. In addition, the results of the post‐ratcheting‐fatigue tests showed that although the fatigue life decreased with increasing pre‐ratcheting strain (the ratcheting strain that is accumulated in pre‐fatigue), the loading condition that pre‐fatigue experiments were conducted has a significant effect on subsequent fatigue behaviour.  相似文献

Fatigue tests were conducted on S45C steel under fully reversed strain control conditions with axial/torsional ( at ) and torsional/axial ( ta ) loading sequences. The linear damage value (n1/N1+n2/N2) was found to depend on the sequence of loading mode ( at or ta ), sequence of strain amplitude (low/high or high/low) and life fraction spent in the first loading. In general, at loading yields larger damage values than ta loading and the low–high sequence of equivalent strain leads to larger damage values than the high–low sequence. The material exhibits cyclic softening under axial cyclic strain. Cyclic hardening occurs in the torsion part of ta loading, which elevates the axial stress in the subsequent loading, causing more damage than in pure axial fatigue at the same strain amplitude. Fatigue life is predicted based on the linear damage rule, the double linear damage rule, the damage curve approach and the plastic work model of Morrow. Results show that overly conservative lives are obtained by these models for at loading while overestimation of life is more likely for ta loading. A modified damage curve method is proposed to account for the load sequence effect, for which predicted lives are found to lie in the factor‐2 scatter band from experimental lives.  相似文献

This paper deals with the formulation and experimental validation of a novel fatigue lifetime estimation technique suitable for assessing the extent of damage in notched metallic materials subjected to in‐service proportional/nonproportional constant/variable amplitude multiaxial load histories. The methodology being formulated makes use of the Modified Manson‐Coffin Curve Method, the Shear Strain–Maximum Variance Method, and the elasto‐plastic Theory of Critical Distances, with the latter theory being applied in the form of the Point Method. The accuracy and reliability of our novel fatigue lifetime estimation technique were checked against a large number of experimental results we generated by testing, under proportional/nonproportional constant/variable amplitude axial‐torsional loading, V‐notched cylindrical specimens made of unalloyed medium‐carbon steel En8 (080M40). Specific experimental trials were run to investigate also the effect of non‐zero mean stresses as well as of different frequencies between the axial and torsional stress/strain components. This systematic validation exercise allowed us to demonstrate that our novel multiaxial fatigue assessment methodology is remarkably accurate, with the estimates falling within an error factor of 2. By modelling the cyclic elasto‐plastic behaviour of metals explicitly, the design methodology being formulated and validated in the present paper offers a complete solution to the problem of estimating multiaxial fatigue lifetime of notched metallic materials, with this holding true independently of sharpness of the stress/strain raiser and complexity of the load history.  相似文献

According to the characteristic of the local behavior of fatigue damage, on the basis of stress field intensity approach, a theory of local stress–strain field intensity for fatigue damage at the notch is developed in this paper, which can take account of the effects of the local stress–strain gradient on fatigue damage at the notch. In order to calculate the local stress–strain field intensity parameters, an incremental elastic-plastic finite element analysis under random cyclic loading is used to determine the local stress–strain response. A local stress–strain field intensity approach to fatigue life prediction is proposed by means of elastic-plastic finite element method for notched specimens. This approach is used to predict fatigue crack initiation life, and good correlation was observed with U-shape notched specimens for normalized 45 steel.  相似文献

A new computational methodology is proposed for fatigue life prediction of notched components subjected to variable amplitude multiaxial loading. In the proposed methodology, an estimation method of non‐proportionality factor (F) proposed by authors in the case of constant amplitude multiaxial loading is extended and applied to variable amplitude multiaxial loading by using Wang‐Brown's reversal counting approach. The pseudo stress correction method integrated with linear elastic finite element analysis is utilized to calculate the local elastic‐plastic stress and strain responses at the notch root. For whole local strain history, the plane with weight‐averaged maximum shear strain range is defined as the critical plane in this study. Based on the defined critical plane, a multiaxial fatigue damage model combined with Miner's linear cumulative damage law is used to predict fatigue life. The experimentally obtained fatigue data for 7050‐T7451 aluminium alloy notched shaft specimens under constant and variable amplitude multiaxial loadings are used to verify the proposed methodology and equivalent strain‐based methodology. The results show that the proposed methodology is superior to equivalent strain‐based methodology.  相似文献

Welded assemblies are commonly used in the shipbuilding industry. Because of the combination of stress concentration and cyclic loading, welded joints could be a critical area for fatigue damage. Thus, knowing stress and strain histories at the critical points of the structure is necessary, particularly when a confined plasticity occurs, to determine the fatigue life of welded assemblies. To avoid time‐consuming nonlinear finite element analyses (FEA), simplified estimation methods of the elastic–plastic strain/stress can be used. In a previous work, an approach to estimate stress state at critical points was developed and employed in the case of double‐notched specimens. The present paper focuses on welded joints in order to validate this strategy with the aim to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life of T‐joints. To go further, a parametric approach has been adopted to take into account the local geometries of welded joints and to determine the constraint operator without any FEA. The results predicted by this approach are compared with experimental fatigue results.  相似文献

Combined low‐cycle fatigue/high‐cycle fatigue (LCF/HCF) loadings were investigated for smooth and circumferentially V‐notched cylindrical Ti–6Al–4V fatigue specimens. Smooth specimens were first cycled under LCF loading conditions for a fraction of the previously established fatigue life. The HCF 107 cycle fatigue limit stress after LCF cycling was established using a step loading technique. Specimens with two notch sizes, both having elastic stress concentration factors of Kt = 2.7, were cycled under LCF loading conditions at a nominal stress ratio of R = 0.1. The subsequent 106 cycle HCF fatigue limit stress at both R = 0.1 and 0.8 was determined. The combined loading LCF/HCF fatigue limit stresses for all specimens were compared to the baseline HCF fatigue limit stresses. After LCF cycling and prior to HCF cycling, the notched specimens were heat tinted, and final fracture surfaces examined for cracks formed during the initial LCF loading. Fatigue test results indicate that the LCF loading, applied for 75% of total LCF life for the smooth specimens and 25% for the notched specimens, resulted in only small reductions in the subsequent HCF fatigue limit stress. Under certain loading conditions, plasticity‐induced stress redistribution at the notch root during LCF cycling appears responsible for an observed increase in HCF fatigue limit stress, in terms of net section stress.  相似文献

Notch effects on axial and torsion fatigue behaviors of low carbon steel were investigated. Fully-reversed tests were conducted on thin-walled tubular specimens with or without a transverse circular hole. A shear failure mechanism was observed for both smooth and notched specimens and under both axial and torsion loadings. The notch effect was more pronounced under axial loading, in spite of higher stress concentration factor in torsion. The commonly used nominal SN approach with fatigue notch factor in conjunction with von Mises effective stress resulted in overly conservative life predictions of both smooth and notched torsion fatigue lives. Neuber’s rule yielded notch root stress and strain amplitudes close to the FEA results for both axial and torsion loadings. The local strain approach based on effective strain obtained from Neuber’s rule or FEA resulted in poor correlation of the fatigue life data of smooth and notched specimens. The Fatemi–Socie critical plane parameter represented the observed failure mechanism and resulted in very good correlations of smooth and notched specimens fatigue data under both axial and torsion loadings. In block loading tests with equal number of alternating axial and torsion cycles at the same stress level, beneficial effect of axial loading was observed. Possible potential reasons for this unexpected behavior are discussed.  相似文献

The evolution of the stress–strain fields near a stationary crack tip under cyclic loading at selected R‐ratios has been studied in a detailed elastic–plastic finite element analysis. The material behaviour was described by a full constitutive model of cyclic plasticity with both kinematic and isotropic hardening variables. Whilst the stress/strain range remains mostly constant during the cyclic loading and scales with the external load range, progressive accumulation of tensile strain occurs, particularly at high R‐ratios. These results may be of significance for the characterization of crack growth, particularly near the fatigue threshold. Elastic–plastic finite element simulations of advancing fatigue cracks were carried out under plane‐stress, plane‐strain and generalized plane‐strain conditions in a compact tension specimen. Physical contact of the crack flanks was observed in plane stress but not in the plane‐strain and generalized plane‐strain conditions. The lack of crack closure in plane strain was found to be independent of the material studied. Significant crack closure was observed under plane‐stress conditions, where a displacement method was used to obtain the actual stress intensity variation during a loading cycle in the presence of crack closure. The results reveal no direct correlation between the attenuation in the stress intensity factor range estimated by the conventional compliance method and that determined by the displacement method. This finding seems to cast some doubts on the validity of the current practice in crack‐closure measurement, and indeed on the role of plasticity‐induced crack closure in the reduction of the applied stress intensity factor range.  相似文献
