Intelligence design patterns

Whenever mention is made of intelligence in the context of communications it is not long before reference is made to IN. The IN in this case is an explicit reference to intelligent networks and very likely an explicit reference to the ITU/ETSI defined standards in Europe or AIN ANSI in America. But this is only one specific instance of the intelligence design patterns. To represent the span of intelligence design patterns as IN is to represent by analogy all knots with the reef knot.Intelligence continues to be a tool that the telecommunications industry wields to tackle the complexity of service design, to try to reduce the cost of service development (through platform reuse), and to emulate the productivity of the software industry by adopting converged technology approaches to improve service creation productivity.This paper briefly maps out the design patterns that are considered intelligent, ranging from the service node concept, the classical intelligent network, the service delivery platform, the distributed application server, through to enterprise intelligence and the intelligent client, in each of which we can see repeating mechanisms, such as service triggering and service selection.     

Overview of IN and TMN harmonization

Introduces the work being performed in ETSI and ITU-T on the management of IN and on IN and TMN harmonization. After a short history of, and rationale for the work in this area, a brief overview of the results achieved in ETSI's joint experts group on IN/TMN is provided. This includes the proposed mapping of the IN functional entities onto TMN function blocks and the proposal for integration of IN and TMN modeling techniques. This work has resulted in the “Baseline Document on the Integration of IN and TMN”. Both ETSI and ITU-T have accepted this document as a starting point for further addressing the special requirements of IN with respect to management (i.e., rapid deployment and provisioning of new services and corresponding management functionality). The work on further alignment of IN and TMN terminology and concepts is an ongoing activity, as both IN and TMN concepts are expected to evolve toward the definition of open and distributed platform-oriented environments. The article also addresses this work program, the intermediate results, and the expected outcome of this continued effort on the standardization of IN management

Shaping future telecommunications: the challenge of globalstandardization

Rapid changes in telecommunication technologies and the telecommunications environment are presenting new opportunities and challenges to global telecommunication standardization. This article begins with a short introduction of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), its structure and main responsibilities, before focusing on global standardization at ITU. But first one must take note of one important point: on March 1, 1993 a major structural reform of the ITU was implemented. Among other important changes, CCITT ceased to exist, and was resurrected as the new ``ITU Standardization Sector.' It is for this reason that the readers will find the term ``CCITT' used for the standardization activities up to February 28, 1993; after this date, the new term ``ITU Standardization Sector' (ITU-T) will be applied. The same situation exists for many other terms as well. It is hoped that the explanations provided in the text are clear enough to assist readers in understanding which new terms have come into use to replace the traditional terms that have been in use for so many years

The International Consultative Committee for Telephone and Telegraph (CCITT) program of work that addresses global international intelligent network (IN) standards and a framework for the standardized evolution of IN are described. Bell Communication Research's (Bellcore's) IN work, referred to as the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN), is also discussed in relation to the CCITT IN Recommendations. In addition, IN activities of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the Telecommunications Technology Committee (TTC) of Japan are described
