In this paper, a novel process for the production of pure hydrogen from natural gas based on the integration of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs) is presented. In this configuration, the SOFC is fed by natural gas and provides electricity and heat to the SOEC, which carries out the separation of steam into hydrogen and oxygen. Depending on the system layout considered, the oxygen available at the SOEC anode outlet can be either mixed with the SOFC cathode stream in order to improve the SOFC performance or regarded as a co-product. Two configurations of the cell stack are studied. The first consists of a stack with the same number of SOFCs and SOECs working at the same current density. In this case, since in typical operating conditions the voltage delivered by the SOFC is lower than the one required by the SOEC, the required additional power is supplied by means of an electric grid connection. In the second case, the electricity balance is compensated by providing additional SOFCs to the stack, which are fed by a supplementary natural gas feed. Simulations carried out with Aspen Plus show that pure hydrogen can be produced with a natural gas to hydrogen LHV-efficiency that is about twice the value of a typical water electrolyzer and comparable to that of medium-scale reformers.  相似文献

The steam electrolysis performance of an intermediate-temperature solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) was measured at 650 °C at various steam concentrations. The cell voltage decreased with increasing steam concentration, which was attributed to a decrease in the steam electrode polarization. The highest performance of the SOEC was 1.32 V at 0.57 A cm−2. On the basis of the electrolytic characteristics of this cell, the efficiency of a hydrogen production system operating at a capacity of 300 N m3 h−1 was estimated. The system efficiency reached a higher heating value (HHV standard) of 98% due to the effective recovery of thermal energy from exhaust gas.  相似文献

The sustainable supply of clean energy may depend on the hydrogen, which usually derives from steam electrolysis for SOEC. However, the current steam electrolysis using SOEC still faces many challenges, such as low catalytic efficiency, poor structural stability. We synthesize a series of La0.6Sr0.4FexO3-δ (LSFx, x = 0.8–1.2) materials, utilizing in situ exsolved metal (Fe) nanoparticles to construct a metal-oxide interface to enhance the performance of steam electrolysis and coking resistance. The active metal-oxide interface can effectively improve the performance of steam electrolysis. The H2 production reaches 4.52 mL min?1 cm?2 with the current efficiency of 97.81% at 1.6 V and 850 °C for the cell with LSF1.1-Ce0.8Sm0.2O3-δ cathode and anode. It shows excellent long-term stability and redox cycling capability after dozens of hours of operation. This research is of great significance for efficient hydrogen production.  相似文献

High-temperature solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) has great potential for efficient and economical production of hydrogen fuel. In this paper, the state-of-the-art SOEC technologies are reviewed. The developments of the important steam electrolyzer components, such as the ionic conducting electrolyte and the electrodes, are summarized and discussed. YSZ and LSGM are promising electrolyte materials for SOEC working at high and intermediate temperatures, respectively. When co-doping or a blocking layer is applied, SDC or GDC are possible electrolyte materials for intermediate-temperature SOEC. Ni–YSZ remains to be the optimal cathode material. Although LSM–YSZ is widely used as SOEC anode, other materials, such as LSF–YSZ, may be better choices and need to be further studied. Considering the cell configuration, planar SOECs are preferred due to their better manufacturability and better electrochemical performance than tubular cells. Anode depolarization is an effective method to reduce the electrical energy consumption of SOEC hydrogen production. Although some electrochemical models and fluid flow models are available, the present literature is lacking detailed modeling analyses of the coupled heat/mass transfer and electrochemical reaction phenomena of the SOEC. Mathematical modeling studies of SOEC with novel structures and anode depolarization processes will be fruitful for the development of SOEC. More works, both experimental and theoretical, are needed to further develop SOEC technology to produce hydrogen more economically and efficiently for the coming hydrogen economy.  相似文献

We report an experimental study on the effect of different flow fields on the cell performance of a double-passive (both anode/cathode) μDMFC stack. Cell performance measurements were made and analyzed for seven different flow field combinations at the anode/cathode of a passive micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) stack. An optimum flow field combination, after taking a series of tests under different operating conditions, was obtained. The results show that the conventional parallel type flow field used at the anode with an innovative/new dendrite perforated type of 80° flow field can provide the best power density for both single cell and 8-cell stack which have a power density of 16.9 mA/cm2 at 50 °C and 1 M methanol solution. Moreover, for an 8-cell stack, both the gravimetric and volumetric power densities can be up to 7.4 W/kg and 37.2 W/L, respectively.  相似文献

An experimental study is carried out to investigate effects of stack orientation and vibration on the performance of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell. A 25‐cm2 single cell with serpentine anode and straight cathode flow channels is used. The hydrogen flow rate, cathode air temperature, and relative humidity are kept constant at 60 smL/min, 20 °C and 80%, respectively, whereas the cathode air flow rate values are 220, 440, and 660 smL/min as well as free breathing case. An orientation and vibration mechanisms are designed to facilitate different values orientation positions and vibration amplitude and frequency of the stack. The results show that stack orientation and vibration have significant effects on the performance of PEM fuel cell. Based on the results obtained from this study, it can be concluded that optimum positions of cell orientation are 30° and 90° at low and high values of cathode air flow rate, respectively. Also, an improvement in the performance of the fuel cell is achieved when the stack is vibrated with low values of amplitude and frequency. Steam electrolysis in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) is considered as an effective method to achieve high-efficiency hydrogen production. In the present investigation, samples of 1-cell, 2-cell and 30-cell SOEC stacks were tested under electrolysis of steam to give a practical evaluation of the SOEC system efficiency of hydrogen production. The samples were tested at 800 °C under various operating conditions up to 500 h without significant degradation, and obtained steam conversion rates of 12.4%, 23% and 82.2% for the 1-cell, 2-cell and 30-cell stacks, respectively. System efficiencies of hydrogen production were calculated for the samples based on their real performance. A maximum efficiency value of 52.7% was achieved in the 30-cell stack.  相似文献

A high temperature gradient within a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is considered a major challenge in SOFC operations. This study investigates the effects of the key parameters on SOFC system efficiency and temperature gradient within a SOFC stack. A 40-cell SOFC stack integrated with a bio-oil sorption-enhanced steam reformer is simulated using MATLAB and DETCHEM. When the air-to-fuel ratio and steam-to-fuel ratio increase, the stack average temperature and temperature gradient decrease. However, a decrease in the stack temperature steadily reduces the system efficiency owing to the tradeoff between the stack performance and thermal balance between heat recovered and consumed by the system. With an increase in the bio-oil flow rate, the system efficiency decreases because of the lower resident time for the electrochemical reaction. This is not, however, beneficial to the maximum temperature gradient. To minimize the temperature gradient of the SOFC stack, a decrease in the bio-oil flow rate is the most effective way. The maximum temperature gradient can be reduced to 14.6 K cm−1 with the stack and system efficiency of 76.58 and 65.18%, respectively, when the SOFC system is operated at an air-to-fuel ratio of 8, steam-to-fuel ratio of 6, and bio-oil flow rate of 0.0041 mol s−1.  相似文献

Hydrogen production via steam electrolysis may involve less electrical energy consumption than conventional low temperature water electrolysis, reflecting the improved thermodynamics and kinetics at elevated temperatures. The present paper reports on the development of a one-dimensional dynamic model of a cathode-supported planar intermediate temperature solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) stack. The model, which consists of an electrochemical model, a mass balance, and four energy balances, is here employed to study the steady state behaviour of an SOEC stack at different current densities and temperatures. The simulations found that activation overpotentials provide the largest contributions to irreversible losses while concentration overpotentials remained negligible throughout the stack. For an average current density of 7000 A m−2 and an inlet steam temperature of 1023 K, the predicted electrical energy consumption of the stack is around 3 kW h per normal m3 of hydrogen, significantly smaller than those of low temperature stacks commercially available today. However, the dependence of the stack temperature distribution on the average current density calls for strict temperature control, especially during dynamic operation.  相似文献

The solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) technology is a promising solution for hydrogen production with the highest electrolysis efficiency. Compared with its counterparts, operating at high temperature means that SOEC requires both power and heat. To investigate the possibility of coupling external waste heat with the SOEC system, and the temperature & quantity requirement for the external waste heat, a universal SOEC system operating at atmospheric pressure is proposed, modeled and analyzed, without specific waste heat source assumption such as solar, geothermal or industrial waste heat. The SOEC system flow sheet is designed to create opportunity for external waste heat coupling. The results show that external waste heat is required for feed stock heating, while the recommended coupling location is the water evaporator. The temperature of the external waste heat should be above 130 °C. For an SOEC system with 1 MW electrolysis power input, the required external waste heat is about 200 kW. When the stack operates at thermoneutral state and 800 °C, the specific energy consumption is 3.77 kWh/Nm3-H2, of which electric power accounts for 84% (3.16 kWh/Nm3-H2) and external waste heat accounts for 16% (0.61 kWh/Nm3-H2). The total specific energy consumption remains almost unchanged when operating the SOEC stack around the thermoneutral condition.  相似文献

A one-dimensional elementary reaction kinetic model for solid oxide fuel-assisted steam electrolysis cell (SOFEC) is developed coupling heterogeneous elementary reactions, electrochemical reaction kinetics, electrode microstructure and transport processes of charge and mass. This model is calibrated and validated by experimental data from a button cell with anode gases of H2, CO and CH4 at 800 °C. After comparisons with solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC), the energy demands, performance and efficiency of CO-assisted SOFEC and CH4-assisted SOFEC are investigated numerically. One important finding is that over 80% of electricity can be saved by SOFEC at a current density of 3000 A m−2. SOFEC assisted by CO or CH4 for steam electrolysis has better performance than SOEC, especially by CH4. The efficiencies of 12% CO-SOFEC and 12% CH4-SOFEC are at least, respectively, 7% and 30% higher than that of SOEC at 800 °C with the current density of below 2500 A m−2. Finally, the effects of type of assisting-fuel, fuel composition and applied voltage are studied. It is found that CO-SOFEC shows higher anode polarization and thus lower performance than CH4-SOFEC with the same molar fraction of fuel. It is also found that the performance of SOFEC increases with increasing proportion of assisted fuel in anode at high current density.  相似文献

In this paper, a conceptual hybrid biomass gasification system is developed to produce hydrogen and is exergoeconomically analyzed. The system is based on steam biomass gasification with the lumped solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) subsystem as the core components. The gasifier gasifies sawdust in a steam medium and operates at a temperature range of 1023-1423 K and near atmospheric pressure. The analysis is conducted for a specific steam biomass ratio of 0.8 kmol-steam/kmol-biomass. The gasification process is assumed to be self-thermally standing. The pressurized SOFC and SOEC are of planar types and operate at 1000 K and 1.2 bar. The system can produce multi-outputs, such as hydrogen (with a production capacity range of 21.8-25.2 kgh−1), power and heat. The internal hydrogen consumption in the lumped SOFC-SOEC subsystem increases from 8.1 to 8.6 kg/h. The SOFC performs an efficiency of 50.3% and utilizes the hydrogen produced from the steam that decomposes in the SOEC. The exergoeconomic analysis is performed to investigate and describe the exergetic and economic interactions between the system components through calculations of the unit exergy cost of the process streams. It obtains a set of cost balance equations belonging to an exergy flow with material streams to and from the components which constitute the system. Solving the developed cost balance equations provides the cost values of the exergy streams. For the gasification temperature range and the electricity cost of 0.1046 $/kWh considered, the unit exergy cost of hydrogen ranges from 0.258 to 0.211 $/kWh.  相似文献

A techno-economic assessment of hydrogen production from waste heat using a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer and solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) integrated separately with the Rankine cycle via two different hybrid systems is investigated. The two systems run via three available cement waste heats of temperatures 360 °C, 432 °C, and 780 °C with the same energy input. The waste heat is used to run the Rankine cycle for the power production required for the PEM electrolyzer system, while in the case of SOEC, a portion of waste heat energy is used to supply the electrolyzer with the necessary steam. Firstly, the best parameters; Rankine working fluid for the two systems and inlet water flow rate and bleeding ratio for the SOEC system are selected. Then, the performance of the two systems (Rankine efficiency, total system efficiency, hydrogen production rate, and economic and CO2 reduction) is investigated and compared. The results reveal that the two systems' performance is higher in the case of steam Rankine than organic, while a bleeding ratio of 1% is the best condition for the SOEC system. Rankine output power, total system efficiency, and hydrogen production rate rose with increasing waste heat temperature having the same energy. SOEC system produces higher hydrogen production and efficiency than the PEM system for all input waste heat conditions. SOEC can produce 36.9 kg/h of hydrogen with a total system efficiency of 23.8% at 780 °C compared with 27.4 kg/h and 14.45%, respectively, for the PEM system. The minimum hydrogen production cost of SOEC and PEM systems is 0.88 $/kg and 1.55 $/kg, respectively. The introduced systems reduce CO2 emissions annually by about 3077 tons.  相似文献

The performance of three solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems, fuelled by biogas produced through anaerobic digestion (AD) process, for heat and electricity generation in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is studied. Each system has a different fuel processing method to prevent carbon deposition over the anode catalyst under biogas fuelling. Anode gas recirculation (AGR), steam reforming (SR), and partial oxidation (POX) are the methods employed in systems I-III, respectively. A planar SOFC stack used in these systems is based on the anode-supported cells with Ni-YSZ anode, YSZ electrolyte and YSZ-LSM cathode, operated at 800 °C. A computer code has been developed for the simulation of the planar SOFC in cell, stack and system levels and applied for the performance prediction of the SOFC systems. The key operational parameters affecting the performance of the SOFC systems are identified. The effect of these parameters on the electrical and CHP efficiencies, the generated electricity and heat, the total exergy destruction, and the number of cells in SOFC stack of the systems are studied. The results show that among the SOFC systems investigated in this study, the AGR and SR fuel processor-based systems with electrical efficiency of 45.1% and 43%, respectively, are suitable to be applied in WWTPs. If the entire biogas produced in a WWTP is used in the AGR or SR fuel processor-based SOFC system, the electricity and heat required to operate the WWTP can be completely self-supplied and the extra electricity generated can be sold to the electrical grid.  相似文献

Durability and start-up ability in sub-zero environment are two technical bottlenecks of vehicular polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems. With exhaust gas recirculation on the anode and cathode side, the cell voltage at low current density can be reduced, and the membrane can be humidified without external humidifier. They may be helpful to prolong the working lifetime and to promote the start-up ability. This paper presents an experimental study on a PEM fuel cell system with anodic and cathodic recirculation. The system is built up based on a 10 kW fuel cell stack, which consists of 50 cells and has an active area of 261 cm2. A cathodic recirculation pump and a hydrogen recirculation pump are utilized on the cathode and anode side, respectively. Key parameters, e.g., stack current, stack voltage, cell voltage, air flow, relative humidity on the cathode side, oxygen concentration at the inlet and outlet of the cathode side, are measured. Results show that: 1) with a cathodic recirculation the system gets good self-humidification effect, which is similar to that with an external humidifier; 2) with a cathodic recirculation and a reduction of fresh air flux, the cell voltage can be obviously reduced; 3) with an anodic recirculation the cell voltage can also be reduced due to a reduction in the hydrogen partial pressure, the relative humidity on the cathode side is a little smaller than the case with only cathode recirculation. It indicates that, for our stack the cathodic recirculation is effective to clamp cell voltage at low current density, and a self-humidification system is possible with cathodic recirculation. Further study will focus on the dynamic model and control of the dual recirculation fuel cell system.  相似文献

The size and configuration of manifold can affect the flow characteristics and uniformity in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack; then its efficiency and service life. Based on the simulation results of a single fuel cell considering electrochemical reaction, a stack model with 300 porous media is established to numerically investigate the performances of a large commercial PEMFC stack. The effects of manifold width and configuration type on the pressure drop and species concentration are studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The results show that the uniformity for most cases of U-type configuration is better than those of Z-type configuration. For U-type configuration, a very good uniformity can be obtained by selecting anode inlet manifold width of 20 mm and anode outlet manifold in range from 25 to 30 mm; the uniformity is bad for all cathode inlet manifold width, relatively better uniformity can be achieved by adjusting cathode outlet manifold width. For Z-type configuration, bad uniformity is found for cathode inlet and outlet manifold with all width; a relatively good uniformity can be obtained with suitable anode manifold width of 35 mm. The research can provide some references to improve gas distribution uniformity in large PEMFC stacks.  相似文献

The paper presents a configuration of mini CHP with the methane reformer and planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks. This mini CHP may produce electricity and superheated steam as well as preheat air and methane for the reformer along with cathode air used in the SOFC stack as an oxidant. Moreover, the mathematical model for this power plant has been created. The thermochemical reactor with impeded fluidized bed for autothermal steam reforming of methane (reformer) considered as the basis for the synthesis gas (syngas) production to fuel SOFC stacks has been studied experimentally as well. A fraction of conversion products has been oxidized by the air fed to the upper region of the impeded fluidized bed in order to carry out the endothermic methane steam reforming in a 1:3 ratio as well as to preheat products of these reactions. Studies have shown that syngas containing 55% of hydrogen could be produced by this reactor. Basic dimensions of the reactor as well as flow rates of air, water and methane for the conversion of methane have been adjusted through mathematical modelling.The paper provides heat balances for the reformer, SOFC stack and waste heat boiler (WHB) intended for generating superheated water steam along with preheating air and methane for the reformer as well as the preheated cathode air. The balances have formed the basis for calculating the following values: the useful product fraction in the reformer; fraction of hydrogen oxidized at SOFC anode; gross electric efficiency; anode temperature; exothermic effect of syngas hydrogen oxidation by air oxygen; excess entropy along with the Gibbs free energy change at standard conditions; electromotive force (EMF) of the fuel cell; specific flow rate of the equivalent fuel for producing electric and heat energy. Calculations have shown that the temperature of hydrogen oxidation products at SOFC anode is 850 °C; gross electric efficiency is 61.0%; EMF of one fuel cell is 0.985 V; fraction of hydrogen oxidized at SOFC anode is 64.6%; specific flow rate of the equivalent fuel for producing electric energy is 0.16 kg of eq.f./(kW·h) while that for heat generation amounts to 44.7 kg of eq.f./(GJ). All specific parameters are in agreement with the results of other studies.  相似文献

The paper describes an experimental analysis on the effect of cathode flow stoichiometry on the electrical performance of a PEMFC stack. The electrical power output of a PEMFC stack is influenced by several independent variables (factors). In order to analyse their reciprocal influence, an experimental design methodology was adopted in a previous experimental session, to determine which factors deserve particular attention. In this work, a further experimental analysis has been carried out on a very significant factor: cathode stoichiometry. Its effects on the electrical power of the PEMFC stack have been investigated. The tests were performed on a 3.5 kWel ZSW stack using the GreenLight GEN VI FC Test Station. The stack characteristics have been obtained running a predefined loading pattern. Some parameters were kept constant during the tests: anode and cathode inlet temperature, anode and cathode inlet relative humidity, anode stoichiometry and inlet temperature of the cooling water. The experimental analysis has shown that an increase in air stoichiometry causes a significant positive effect (increment) on electric power, especially at high-current density, and up to the value of 2 stoichs. These results have been connected to the cathode water flooding, and a discussion was performed concerning the influence of air stoichiometry on electrode flooding at different levels of current density operation.  相似文献
