In comparison to Central Europe, the knowledge about water mites inhabiting the natural lakes of southern Europe is scarce. This is a first study focusing on the water mite species composition and zonation in a large Mediterranean lake, i.e. ancient Lake Skadar basin, and identifying the role of physical and chemical water parameters in their distribution. The Hydrachnidia community of Lake Skadar is composed of 53 species. The most diverse water mite assemblages were found in the littoral zone and in the sublacustrine springs. Our study revealed that water mites were most abundant in the deeper, open part of Lake Skadar. Typically sublacustrine species dominated in all zones and habitats of Lake Skadar. The rheobiontic and rheophilic species also had a substantial share, mainly in sublacustrine springs, but also in the open lake area. The unique feature of the Lake Skadar water mite community was an absence of many species typical for the vernal astatic waters and for the shallow phytolittoral zone, even if such habitats were present. We conclude that the structure of the water mite communities in Lake Skadar are associated with particular zones (sublacustrine springs, littoral, open lake area) of the lake and with local environmental conditions, predominantly temperature.  相似文献

Lakes Kanyaboli, Sare and Namboyo are three important freshwater satellite lakes in the northern region of the Lake Victoria (Kenya) basin. Lake Simbi, a small alkaline -saline crater-lake is located near the southern shoreline of the Nyanza Gulf of Lake Victoria. The three freshwater lakes provide unique aquatic habitats for the important indigenous fish species and other aquatic biodiversity, as well as serving as water resources for the surrounding communities. Surface and sediment samples were collected and examined to characterize these lake systems. Metal partitioning among the various defined geochemical phases also was determined. Based on the measured concentrations, the satellite lake waters are relatively uncontaminated with regard to Al (aluminium), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr). Levels of most elements were below detection limits, as well as being well below the desirable drinking water guideline values proposed by the World Health Organization. The exception was the elevated iron (Fe) contents (>300 μg L−1). The sediments exhibited a relatively low level of contamination with regard to heavy metals. The mean values of the measured metals in the sediments were compared to levels in adjacent Lake Victoria. The study results from these poorly-studied, and relatively unperturbed ecosystems, compared to the main body of lake Victoria, highlight their importance as conservation areas, despite the small-scale fishery activity, potential threats from human activities and their sensitivity to fluctuating environmental conditions.  相似文献

Spongillida (freshwater sponges) constitute an integral part of the world's lacustrine ecosystems. Their radiation and worldwide distribution into nearly every freshwater habitat is predominantly facilitated by the formation of so-called gemmules, i.e., globular endurance and propagation stages. Widespread species produce gemmules in a wide array of morphs, while in (ancient) lake endemic lineages gemmules are absent. Contrary to current classification, earlier molecular studies on non-type material indicated that gemmule-lacking lineages are unrelated, and endemic taxa were derived from a cosmopolitan (and paraphyletic) founder lineage. In this study we investigate this hypothesis with type material, particularly focussing on endemic taxa potentially derived from common ancestor shared with the widespread Ephydatia fluviatilis. We demonstrate that taxa regarded as endemic from Lake Ohrid (Ochridaspongia), Lake Kinneret/Tiberias (Cortispongilla) and Lake Titicaca (Balliviaspongia) are derived from the founder lineage, but unrelated to other, particularly Afrotropical, ancient lake sponges, and discuss implications for understanding freshwater sponge phylogeny and evolution.  相似文献

Planktonic organisms are good indicators of water quality but are rarely used in Mexican riverine studies in spite of the high level of contamination in these lotic waters. In this study, we focused on the plankton of the river Amacuzac in Mexico and a large saline waterbody, Lake Tequisquitengo, which is located in the Amacuzac river basin. We collected samples at three sites in the River Amacuzac and one at Lake Tequisquitengo from May 2015 to March–April of 2016. We analysed the physicochemical variables, coliform bacteria, and biological oxygen demand levels. We also quantified phytoplankton and zooplankton. Our results indicate that the study sites are mesotrophic with high densities of diatoms and cyanobacteria. Among the zooplankton, the dominant organisms were rotifers. The constancy of planktonic taxa was high in the lake but low in the river. The Descy index ranged from 2.9 to 4.5 in the river and from 4.0 to 5.0 in the lake. The saprobic index shows that the system is β‐mesosaprobic. The species diversity was higher in the river than in the lake. Our study shows that plankton can efficiently be used to evaluate the water quality in rivers and lakes.  相似文献

Ancient Lake Titicaca (Bolivia, Peru) is home to several endemic species flocks, including representatives of the caenogastropod genus Heleobia. Preliminary analyses indicated that past geological and limnological events had an important effect on intralacustrine speciation events in Heleobia spp. However, the role of allopatric speciation due to vicariance events has not been assessed in detail before, even though several biogeographic barriers are conceivable. This study therefore assesses evolutionary patterns in the Heleobia flock in space and time based on mitochondrial DNA sequencing data of 103 specimens from Lake Titicaca and the surrounding Altiplano. Specifically, the degree of genetic distinctness of populations at various geographical scales and the timing of population expansion events were inferred.A TCS network analysis indicated that many terminal haplotypes belong to Altiplano species, whereas central haplotypes are typically associated with Lake Titicaca taxa. AMOVAs based on geographical groupings resulted in a significant partitioning of variance in Altiplano vs. Titicaca taxa but not in taxa from the northern vs. southern basins of the lake. Mismatch analyses suggested that the Heleobia flock underwent sudden spatial and demographic expansions during the Middle/Late Pleistocene. Based on these findings, the working hypothesis of vicariant speciation has to be rejected. Instead, a Middle Pleistocene lake level lowstand (possibly interglacial MIS9), which resulted in the desiccation of the southern and the salinization of the northern basin, may have caused a severe bottleneck in Heleobia spp. Recovery from these limnological conditions might then have triggered sudden spatial and demographic expansion events.  相似文献

Lake Malawi is the southernmost of the Great Rift Valley Lakes of Africa and boasts the world's greatest freshwater fish biodiversity. Along with its basin, the lake provides many benefits to the country of Malawi. Settlements, agriculture and fishing are some of the major uses of the lake basin, making community involvement a necessary component of its management. With the use of key informant interviews, questionnaire survey, document review and site observations, this study demonstrates the applicability of the Integrated Lake Basin Management framework in the Lake Malawi Basin in regard to stakeholder participation. The main objective was to assess the participation of stakeholders, especially local communities, in the management of the lake basin. The framework applied in this study is discussed. The study findings indicate strong to very strong stakeholder participation, with notably high levels of awareness and women's involvement. Enhancing the understanding of the complex nature of lake basin issues, especially those related to the linkages between the water body and the basin, is a topic requiring further attention.  相似文献

We describe the diets of lake herring (Coregonus artedi) and rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) in western Lake Superior during the summers of 1996 and 1997. Both species consumed predominantly (> 71% by number) zooplankton, showing a preference for larger taxa. Diet overlap between the two species was low (Schoener's index = 0.42). Mysis was most important in rainbow smelt diets, whereas Diaptomus sicilis was most important in lake herring diets. Rainbow smelt selected larger taxa, and larger individuals within a taxon when compared to lake herring, although rainbow smelt tended to be smaller fish. Fish diets have changed relative to previous studies and may be reflecting changes in the zooplankton community. Continued changes in the fish and zooplankton community will alter predatorprey and energetic pathways, ultimately affecting growth and production of the ecosystem.  相似文献

Lake Lugu has been termed an “ancient lake” in several publications. Ancient lakes, such as Baikal or Tanganyika have in common an age of several million years and an outstanding biodiversity and rate of endemism. Lake Lugu’s age is unknown, however, and has been inferred from the presumed Pliocene increased tectonic activity on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The lake was thus considered to be of tectonic origin, but supporting studies do not exist. Here we report and describe seven endemic species. The endemic gastropod Gyraulus luguhuensis exhibits an aberrant pseudo-dextral shell morphology, which is predominantly known from undisputed ancient lakes. To better understand the origin of the lake and of its biodiversity, we present a preliminary geological study, which shows that Lake Lugu is a tectonic-solution lake. During a survey of the aquatic habitats up to 21 gastropod morphospecies could be differentiated macro-morphologically. An aberrant neritid-like Radix was genetically studied for the first time. The genetic data suggest that Lugu-Radix, typical and neritid shell shapes, constitute a clade, comprising four possibly endemic evolutionary lineages, which potentially represent four different species. The molecular-clock approach indicates a Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene origin of the clade, which we consider the minimum age of Lake Lugu. Our study reveals that the biodiversity in general and that of gastropods in particular is significantly higher than previously known. Against this background and considering the co-occurrence of aberrant Gyraulus and Radix with an evolutionary history of more than two million years, Lugu is putatively an ancient lake.  相似文献

Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia, being situated at the heart of the Mekong River Basin. Governance of the lake over the recent past has been weak and overly complex, and the basin governance structure has changed over time in terms of its fisheries management framework. The governance framework initially focused on the commercial exploitation of fish resources, but has more recently switched to a community‐based fisheries management, biodiversity conservation and open access model. This study discusses how the water flows occurring between the Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake complicate the governance of the lake, and particularly its fisheries, biodiversity, land and water management activities. The establishment of the Tonle Sap Authority (TSA) in 2007 sought to address the governance challenges facing the lake. The current study concludes, however, that the TSA alone is not sufficient and that global, regional and national stakeholders must make an effort to ensure the water flows between the lake and the Mekong River are themselves considered a core governance issue for the Tonle Sap.  相似文献

The native Caspian Sea fauna underwent severe changes since the early 20th century, mostly due to anthropogenic activities. However, the nature, magnitude and rate of biodiversity change can only be assessed by comparison with natural baseline settings. A mostly in-situ mollusk fauna retrieved from Late Pleistocene (Hyrcanian, 107 ± 7 ka) deposits at Selitrennoye (Astrakhan province, Russia) provides a snapshot of a natural Caspian assemblage. In total, 24 gastropod and 13 bivalve species were identified. The fauna is predominantly endemic/native (94% in species numbers and 99% in abundance) and is dominated by three families (Cardiidae, Dreissenidae and Hydrobiidae). The Selitrennoye assemblage is a natural baseline of a pre-invasive Caspian Sea fauna living in a shallow (15–25 m), lower mesohaline (5–8 psu) open lake environment. The species-rich Selitrennoye fauna contrasts with the largely depleted and invasive-dominated fauna that currently occupies similar habitats in the Caspian Sea and underlines the magnitude of the current biodiversity crisis.  相似文献

Lake Edward is one of the African Rift Valley lakes draining into the Nile River basin. We conducted three sampling series in Lake Edward in October-November 2016, March-April 2017 and January 2018, in distinct seasonal conditions and in several sites varying by depth and proximity to river outlets, including the Kazinga Channel, which connects the hypertrophic Lake George to Lake Edward. The phytoplankton was examined using microscopy and marker pigment analysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and subsequent CHEMTAX processing for estimating abundance of phytoplankton groups. Chlorophyll a concentration in the pelagic and littoral open lake sites barely exceeded 10 µg L−1 whereas, in contrast, in the semi-enclosed Bay of Katwe influenced by the Kazinga Channel chlorophyll a was up to 100 µg L−1. Despite substantial seasonal variations of limnological conditions such as photic and mixed layer depths, cyanoprokaryotes/cyanobacteria represented on average 60% of the phytoplankton biomass, followed by diatoms, which contributed ~25% of chlorophyll a, and by green algae, chrysophytes and cryptophytes. 248 taxa were identified with clear prevalence of cyanobacteria (104 taxa), from the morphological groups of coccal and filamentous species (non-heterocytous and heterocytous). The high proportion of heterocytous cyanobacteria, along with a relatively high particulate organic carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio, suggest N limitation as well as light limitation, most pronounced in the pelagic sites. During the rainy season, the most abundant diatoms in the plankton were needle-like Nitzschia. Comparison with previous studies found differences in water transparency, total phosphorus, and phytoplankton composition.  相似文献

Lake Champlain is the sixth largest freshwater lake in the USA. Lake Champlain’s watershed is shared by Vermont and New York in the USA, and Quebec in Canada. The lake’s remarkable drainage area to surface area ratio is 19:1. More than 600 000 people live in the Lake Champlain basin and millions visit each year. The lake’s relatively healthy natural resources sustain a thriving economy. The three most challenging environmental issues facing the Lake Champlain basin are reducing phosphorus pollution, preventing toxic contaminants from entering the lake and managing invasive aquatic species that are not native that threaten native flora and fauna. To effectively address these issues, the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) believes that all decisions about the lake must be based on accurate, ongoing scientific research and that citizen involvement and inter‐jurisdictional cooperation is vital. The programme has worked hard to identify all citizens and organizations that have a stake in Lake Champlain and draw them into a cooperative, sustainable management process. A 1990 Act of Congress (Public Law 101‐596) established a coordinated framework to study and understand the diverse systems of Lake Champlain and its basin in order to develop a comprehensive management plan to protect and restore lake and watershed resources. A 31‐member multi‐stakeholder board was established to develop the plan, a process that took 5 years and included numerous public meetings. Today, a Steering Committee oversees the implementation of the plan and the activities of the LCBP.  相似文献

A total of 19 taxa of larval fish was collected with metered plankton nets in Ohio and adjacent Ontario waters of the western basin of Lake Erie. Analysis of yellow perch, Perca flavescens, collection data indicates that shallow inshore areas serve as important nursery areas for this species. Collection of larvae provides evidence of relict breeding populations of lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis, and sculpin (Cottus sp.) in the western basin.  相似文献

Lake Erie sustained large populations of ciscoes (Salmonidae: Coregoninae) 120 years ago. By the end of the 19th century, abundance of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) had declined drastically. By 1925, the lake herring (a cisco) population (Coregonus artedii) had collapsed, although a limited lake herring fishery persisted in the eastern basin until the 1950s. In the latter part of the 20th century, the composition of the fish community changed as oligotrophication proceeded. Since 1984, a limited recovery of lake whitefish has occurred, however no recovery was evident for lake herring. Current ecological conditions in Lake Erie probably will not inhibit recovery of the coregonine species. Recovery of walleye (Sander vitreus) and efforts to rehabilitate the native lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in Lake Erie will probably assist recovery because these piscivores reduce populations of alewife (Alosa psuedoharengus) and rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), which inhibit reproductive success of coregonines. Although there are considerable spawning substrates available to coregonine species in eastern Lake Erie, eggs and fry would probably be displaced by storm surge from most shoals. Site selection for stocking or seeding of eggs should consider the reproductive life cycle of the stocked fish and suitable protection from storm events. Two potential sites in the eastern basin have been identified. Recommended management rocedures, including commercial fisheries, are suggested to assist in recovery. Stocking in the eastern basin of Lake Erie is recommended for both species, as conditions are adequate and the native spawning population in the eastern basin is low. For lake herring, consideration should be given to match ecophenotypes as much as possible. Egg seeding is recommended. Egg seeding of lake whitefish should be considered initially, with fingerling or yearling stocking suggested if unsuccessful. Spawning stocks of whitefish in the western basin of Lake Erie could be utilized.  相似文献

Surveys of the benthic macroinvertebrate community were conducted in the main basin of Lake Huron in 2000 and 2003, and in Georgian Bay and North Channel in 2002. Results were compared to surveys conducted in the 1960s and early 1970s. Although data of earlier surveys were inconsistent, our best estimates suggest that total density of the four major benthic taxa (Diporeia spp., Oligochaeta, Sphaeriidae, and Chironomidae) in the main basin declined dramatically between the early 1970s and 2000. Populations of all major taxa continued to decline between 2000 and 2003, particularly Diporeia and Sphaeriidae. Diporeia was rare or absent in the southern end of the lake and in some nearshore areas in 2000, and by 2003 was not found at depths < 50 m except in the far northeastern end of the lake. Densities of the major taxa in Georgian Bay and North Channel in 2002 were not different from densities in 1973 despite differences in survey methods. A limited study in southern Georgian Bay, however, found that densities of both Diporeia and Sphaeriidae declined to zero at most sites between 2000 and 2004. The population of Dreissena polymorpha was stable in all lake areas, but Dreissena bugensis increased, particularly at the 31–50 m depth interval in the main basin. Since there were no extensive surveys in Lake Huron in the period between nutrient abatement (late 1970s) and the establishment of Dreissena (early 1990s), it is difficult to determine relative roles of these events on observed declines. However, since phosphorus loads have been stable since the early 1980s, declines between 2000 and 2003 can likely be attributed to Dreissena.  相似文献

Changes in the crustacean zooplankton community composition and abundance in Lake Winnipeg (1969–2006) provide a rare opportunity to examine their response to environmental changes in the largest naturally eutrophic lake on the Canadian prairies. Since 1929, zooplankton species composition in Lake Winnipeg has changed little except for the addition of the invasive cladoceran, Eubosmina coregoni in 1994. The dominant taxa in the lake in summer include: Leptodiaptomus ashlandi, Acanthocyclops vernalis, Diacyclops thomasi, Daphnia retrocurva, Daphnia mendotae, Diaphanosoma birgei, Eubosmina coregoni, and Bosmina longirostris. Climate-accelerated nutrient loading to southern Lake Winnipeg over the last two decades has led to increased phytoplankton abundance and higher frequency of cyanobacterial blooms especially in its northern basin. Crustacean zooplankton have likewise increased especially in the North Basin, but less so in the more nutrient rich South Basin, possibly as a consequence of higher densities of pelagic planktivorous fish and light-limited primary production compared with the more transparent North basin (Brunskill et al., 1979, 1980). Calanoid copepods play a larger role in the South basin food web in contrast to cyclopoid copepods and Cladocera in the North basin. The study begins to fill the recognized gap in understanding of Lake Winnipeg's food web structure and provides a baseline for evaluating ongoing changes in the zooplankton community with the arrival of new non-indigenous taxa, e.g. Bythotrephes longimanus and Dreissena polymorpha. It reinforces previous work demonstrating that zooplankton provide valuable indices toward evaluating the health of an ecosystem.  相似文献

closed drainage basin in north‐east Ethiopia over a 50‐years period, using multitemporal remote sensing and geospatial data. Two historical occasions of aerial photographs (1957 and 1986) and one satellite image (2007) were examined with image analysis tools: Leica Photogrammetric Suite (LPS 9.2) Project Manager, ArcGIS10.0, and ERDAS EMAGINE 9.2. Seven aerial coverage of land use/land cover categories were identified and mapped for the past three historical times. The results indicated that farmlands/settlements and shrublands/degraded lands increased by 43.1% and 136.9%, at an annual rate of 27.4 and 13.5 ha year?1, respectively, between 1957 and 2007. In contrast, bushlands, grasslands, forestlands and lake surface area were diminished by 68.8%, 62.7%, 90.5% and 7.6%, at a rate of 24.0, 7.6, 6.1 and 3.7 ha year?1, respectively, over the past five decades. The basin had undergone significant transformation in land use/land cover over the past half century, affecting the lake's biophysical stability by accelerating soil erosion in the basin, sediment accumulation, and a reduced quantity and quality of cumulative stream flow into the lake.  相似文献

青藏高原的内陆湖泊水位和冰川变化和其流域内冰川质量亏损对湖泊水位波动的影响及其贡献对水量平衡研究具有重要意义。以哈拉湖流域冰川为例,基于2000-2015年星载雷达测高资料和Landsat卫星多光谱遥感资料分别提取湖泊水位和面积变化;结合附近的托勒台站气象观测资料,进一步分析其水位波动变化原因和冰川亏损对湖泊水量贡献。结果表明:受年降水量和夏季降水量增加影响,哈拉湖水位呈增加趋势,但哈拉湖流域冰川亏损加速趋势不明显;与2000年相比,湖泊面积增加了(21.4±4.8)km~2,湖泊水位增加了(1.68±0.26)m,相应的湖泊水容量增加了(16.1±0.3)×10~8m~3水当量。流域冰川亏损量达对哈拉湖水量的贡献率为39.65%,降水量增加对湖泊水量贡献了22.82%。  相似文献

Lake Champlain shares a geological history with the Great Lakes and, as part of the St. Lawrence drainage, also shares biological and ecological similarities. The complex bathymetry and extensive shoreline provide a variety of lacustrine habitats, from deep oligotrophic areas to shallow bays that are highly eutrophic. The large basin:lake ratio (19:1) makes Lake Champlain vulnerable to impacts associated with land use, and in some parts of the lake these impacts are further exacerbated by limited water exchange among lake segments due to both natural and anthropogenic barriers. Research in Lake Champlain and the surrounding basin has expanded considerably since the 1970s, with a particularly dramatic increase since the early 1990s. This special issue of the Journal of Great Lakes Research brings together 16 reports from recent research and monitoring efforts in Lake Champlain. The papers cover a variety of topics but primarily focus on lake hydrodynamics; historical and recent chemical changes in the lake; phosphorus loading; recent changes in populations of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fishes; impacts of invasive species; recreational use; and the challenges of management decision-making in a lake that falls within the legal jurisdictions of two U.S. states, one Canadian province, two national governments, and the International Joint Commission. The papers provide not only evaluations of progress on some critical management issues but also valuable reference points for future research.  相似文献
