The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of selective attention and levels of processing (LOPs) at study on long-term repetition priming vis-a-vis their effects on explicit recognition. In a series of three experiments we found parallel effects of LOP and attention on long-term repetition priming and recognition performance when the manipulation of these factors at encoding was blocked. When a mixed study condition was used, both factors affected explicit recognition, while their effect on repetition priming was determined by the nature of the test. Shallow processing at test did not benefit from long-term repetition, regardless of whether the words had been studied deeply or shallowly. Selective attention affected long-term repetition priming in a semantic, but not in a lexical decision (LD), test. Regardless of study condition, retention lag affected long-term repetition priming only in the semantic test. These results suggest that if the experimental conditions allow scrupulous selection of attended and unattended information or narrow tuning to a shallow, pre-lexical LOP, implicit access to unattended or shallowly studied items is significantly reduced, as is explicit recognition. We suggest a conceptual framework for understanding the effects of LOP, attention, and retention interval on performance of explicit and implicit tests of memory.  相似文献

A short-term implicit memory effect is reported and interpreted as arising within the word recognition system. In Experiment 1, repetition priming in lexical decision was determined for low-frequency words and pseudowords at lags of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 23 intervening items. For words, a large short-term priming component decayed rapidly but smoothly over the first 3 items (8 s) to a stable long-term value. For nonwords, priming dropped to the long-term value with a single intervening item. This Lag x Lexicality interaction was replicated with a naming task in Experiment 2 and with high-frequency words in Experiment 3. Word frequency affected long-term priming but not the size or decay rate of short-term priming, dissociating the two repetition effects. In Experiment 4, an old-new decision task was used to test explicit memory. Parallel word and nonword decay patterns were found, dissociating short-term priming from explicit working memory. This study examines the potential encoding in long-term memory of subphonemic, within-category variation in voice onset time (VOT) and the degree to which this encoding of subtle variation is mediated by lexical competition. In 4 long-term repetition-priming experiments, magnitude of priming was examined as a function of variation in VOT in words with voiced counterparts (cape-gape) and without (cow-*gow) and words whose counterparts were high frequency (pest-best) or low frequency (pile-bile). The results showed that within-category variation was indeed encoded in memory and could have demonstrable effects on priming. However, there were also robust effects of prototypical representations on priming. Encoding of within-category variation was also affected by the presence of lexical counterparts and by the frequency of counterparts. How we recognize faces despite rotations in depth is of great interest to psychologists, computer scientists and neurophysiologists because of the accuracy of human performance despite the intrinsic difficulty of the task. Three experiments are reported here which used three-dimensional facial surface representations to investigate the effects of rotations in depth on a face recognition task. Experiment 1, using "shape only" representations, showed that all the views used (full-face, three-quarter and profile) were equally well recognized when all had been learned. Performance was better when the same views were presented in an animated sequence rather than at random, suggesting that structure-from-motion provides useful information for recognition. When stimuli were presented inverted, performance was worse and there were differences in the recognizability of views, demonstrating that the familiarity of upright faces affects generalization across views. Experiments 2 and 3 investigated generalization from single views and found performance to be dependent on learned view. In both experiments, generalization from learned full-face fell off with increasing angle of rotation. With shape only stimuli, three-quarter views generalized well to each other, even when inverted but for profiles generalization was equally bad to all unlearned views. This difference may be explained because of the particular relationship of the profile to the axis of symmetry. In Experiment 3, addition of information about superficial properties including color and texture facilitated performance, but patterns of generalization remained substantially the same, emphasizing the importance of underlying shape information. However, generalization from the three-quarter view became viewpoint invariant and there was some evidence for better generalization between profiles. The results are interpreted as showing that three-dimensional shape information is fundamental for recognition across rotations in depth although superficial information may also be used to reduce viewpoint dependence.  相似文献

Priming effects in word-fragment completion were enhanced when at study subjects generated rather than read the words. This generation effect occurred when the same fragments used at test were also used in generating the words at study. When different fragments were used at study and at test, generate and read conditions gave rise to similiar priming effects, but these same study conditions led to typical generation effects in recognition memory. These findings of a generation effect in an implicit as opposed to an explicit memory test support the view that generating a study item may enhance data-driven as well as conceptually driven processing, and they provide further evidence of the usefulness of this process distinction in relating implicit to explicit memory performance. Three experiments examined priming in partial-word identification (Warrington & Weiskrantz, 1968) and its relation to recognition memory. The results showed that changes in modality of presentation between study and test reduced performance on both identification and recognition. In contrast, changes in elaborative processing enhanced recognition but had no effect on identification. Furthermore, when explicit memory instructions were given, identification was changed to a cued recall test and was consequently affected by elaborative processing. We also found that the time course of forgetting in priming was different from that in recognition; priming in identification did not change over a 24-hr interval, whereas recognition declined rapidly during this interval. Overall, these results suggest that identification relies primarily on data-driven processing, whereas recognition can rely on both data-driven and conceptually driven processing. Previous studies suggested that perceptual implicit memory is spared in Alzheimer's disease (AD) but conceptual implicit memory is not. This dissociation is often invoked to support views of implicit memory that distinguish between perceptual and conceptual processing or systems. This study investigated an alternate hypothesis: that methodological differences between perceptual and conceptual implicit tests could account for differences in performance. Fourteen AD participants, 16 elderly controls, and 16 younger controls participated in structurally parallel conceptual and perceptual tests of implicit memory that required production of studied items. Results showed normal perceptual and conceptual priming when participants with AD generated items at study but impaired priming in both tests when they merely repeated items. These results are inconsistent with both systems and processing views of implicit memory and suggest that similarity of study and test procedures is more important than the inferred theoretical construct. The degree to which repetition priming is perceptually specific is informative about the mechanisms of implicit memory as well as of perceptual processing. In 2 sets of experiments with pictures as stimuli, we tested the effects of color and pattern manipulations between study and test on implicit memory (i.e., naming facilitation) and explicit memory (i.e., 2 forms of recognition). These manipulations did not affect priming. However, participants were able to explicitly detect stimulus changes at above-change levels. changes in color also produced small decrements in participants' ability to judge that repeated stimuli were old on a recognition tests. Experiment 2 showed diminished priming with changes in the stimulus exemplar (i.e., a different picture of the same named object) from study to test, which demonstrated that the picture-naming paradigm is sensitive to changes in physical attributes. The results suggest that physical attributes that are not essential to the formation of a shape representation do not influence repetition priming in a basic identification paradigm. The relationship between recall and recognition has been a central topic for the study of memory. A test of alternative views about recall and recognition was arranged by studying amnesic patients. In amnesia, damage has occurred to a brain system important for declarative (conscious) memory, but skill learning, priming, and other forms of nonconscious memory are intact. Recall and recognition were found to be proportionately impaired in amnesic patients, and confidence ratings for the recognition judgments were commensurate with the level of impaired performance. The results are contrary to views that either recognition memory or associated confidence judgments are ordinarily supported significantly by nonconscious memory. The results favor the view that recall and recognition are related functions of declarative memory and equivalently dependent on the brain system damaged in amnesia. This study examined whether spatial location mediates intentional forgetting of peripherally presented words. Using an item-method directed forgetting paradigm, words were presented in peripheral locations at study. A recognition test presented all words at either the same or a different location relative to study. Results showed that while recognition of Remember words was unaffected by test location, when Forget words were presented in the same location at test as at study, recognition accuracy was significantly greater than when presented in a different location. Experiment 2 showed that the speed to localize a previously studied word was faster when it was presented in the same rather than a different study-test location but that the magnitude of this spatial priming was unaffected by memory instruction. We suggest that the location of peripherally presented words is represented in memory and can aid the retrieval of poorly encoded words. Exposure to a spatial location leads to habituation of exploration such that, in a novelty preference test, rodents subsequently prefer exploring a novel location to the familiar location. According to Wagner's (1981) theory of memory, short-term and long-term habituation are caused by separate and sometimes opponent processes. In the present study, this dual-process account of memory was tested. Mice received a series of exposure training trials to a location before receiving a novelty preference test. The novelty preference was greater when tested after a short, rather than a long, interval. In contrast, the novelty preference was weaker when exposure training trials were separated by a short, rather than a long interval. Furthermore, it was found that long-term habituation was determined by the independent effects of the amount of exposure training and the number of exposure training trials when factors such as the intertrial interval and the cumulative intertrial interval were controlled. A final experiment demonstrated that a long-term reduction of exploration could be caused by a negative priming effect due to associations formed during exploration. These results provide evidence against a single-process account of habituation and suggest that spatial habituation is determined by both short-term, recency-based memory and long-term, incrementally strengthened memory. Amnesic patients with mesial temporal lobe pathology often produce normal priming effects despite severely impaired memory. This is generally interpreted to mean that whereas limbic structures are involved in conscious memory, other structures, comprising a separate memory system, mediate priming effects. Priming and recognition memory measures were correlated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures of damage to specific brain structures in a sample of 30 Ss. The results provide evidence that both priming and recognition memory may be adversely affected by mesial temporal lobe damage. Furthermore, the results suggest that striatal damage is associated with lexical or perceptual deficits and larger measured priming effects. Thus, co-existing striatal and limbic damage may lead to normal priming performance in some memory-impaired patients. In these instances, normal priming performance may not be mediated by a separate (implicit) memory processing system in the brain. Three experiments were conducted to show that engaging in an effort to answer a question markedly influences the processing of information subsequently encountered in the environment. On each of 2 successive days, participants were given a definition test that involved the recall of rare English words cued by their definitions. A lexical-decision task was administered between the 2 definition tests; the timing of the lexical-decision task varied across experiments. A strong target-to-definition priming effect occurred such that prior exposure to words during the lexical-decision task increased their likelihood of being recalled in the final definition test. It also appears that earlier attempts to answer questions affected the acquisition of relevant new material in long-term memory. Four experiments tested the predictions made by the model outlined in A. H. Criss and R. M. Shiffrin (2004b). Participants studied 2 successive lists of pairs followed by a recognition memory test for the most recent list. Some items and some pairs were repeated across the 2 lists. Critically, a given item could be repeated in the same or different type of pair. For associative recognition, performance was only affected by repetitions in the same pair type. However, in single-item recognition confusions occurred for both types of repetitions. The results are as predicted and confirm the assumption that different associative representations were stored even when the same token repeated in different pair types, whereas similar item representations were used regardless of pair type. Word form representations in intact cerebral hemispheres were studied by a lateralized perceptual identification priming task. During the study phase, word forms were primed by displaying words visually in uppercase or lowercase letters. During the test phase, perceptual identification of non-studied baseline words and studied words (presented in same or different lettercase as studied) was tested by displaying targets in the left or right visual field. Experiment 1 showed that the hemispheric pattern of priming effects was dependent on the lettercase at test. For uppercase test items, only the left visual field/right hemisphere was sentitive to study-test changes in lettercase, replicating an earlier result obtained in word-stem completion (Marsolek, Kosslyn and Squire, 1992). However, lowercase test items did not reveal any asymmetries in the form-dependent priming component indicating that in some conditions form-specific representations are computed in the left hemisphere also. No asymmetries were found in the abstract, form-independent component of priming. Experiment 2 revealed that use of explicit memory in the perceptual identification task eliminated the form-specific priming effects and suggested that the results of Experiment 1 were uncontaminated by explicit memory.  相似文献

This study investigated whether and how visual representations of individual objects are bound in memory to scene context. Participants viewed a series of naturalistic scenes, and memory for the visual form of a target object in each scene was examined in a 2-alternative forced-choice test, with the distractor object either a different object token or the target object rotated in depth. In Experiments 1 and 2, object memory performance was more accurate when the test object alternatives were displayed within the original scene than when they were displayed in isolation, demonstrating object-to-scene binding. Experiment 3 tested the hypothesis that episodic scene representations are formed through the binding of object representations to scene locations. Consistent with this hypothesis, memory performance was more accurate when the test alternatives were displayed within the scene at the same position originally occupied by the target than when they were displayed at a different position. When people retrieve newly learned facts on a recognition test, they are often increasingly slowed by the number of other newly learned facts that have a concept in common with the probed fact. This is called the fan effect. Assuming that people are using situation models of the learned information, the author considers whether the inhibition of competing representations is one of the processes involved in the fan effect. Evidence was found for negative priming of related but irrelevant situation models, thus supporting the idea that the inhibition of highly related memory traces is used in long-term memory retrieval. The use of multiple familiar views of objects to facilitate recognition of novel views has been addressed in a number of behavioral studies, but the results have not been conclusive. The present study was a comprehensive examination of view combination for different types of novel views (internal or external to the studied views) and different objects (amoeboid objects and objects composed of geons; objects with and without self-occlusion across rotation). The authors found that the advantage gained from the study of 2 views was more than the generalization from each of the studied views presented alone. This facilitation occurred only for internal views but not external views. In addition, the benefits from the study of 2 views diminished when (a) the studied views did not share the same visible features and when (b) the studied views were separated by a small angular difference.
