The processing of isolated visual letters was studied by means of a priming paradigm. In alphabetic (letter vs nonletter) classification, any letter prime reduced response times to letter targets. Additional facilitation occurred only with primes physically identical to the target. In letter naming, facilitation was seen with primes nominally identical to the target even when they were physically different. This result is not due to phonological priming because phonologically similar primes had no effect on naming times. Primes nominally different from the target but physically similar to it increased naming times. The classification task seems to be performed through the global monitoring of stored visual knowledge of letters. In contrast, the absolute identification of letters appears to rest on a signal-to-noise statistic derived from an abstract encoding of letter identities. Practitioners and scientists have demonstrated great interest in the physiological and biochemical effects of endurance training on the results of the marathon run. It is well documented that athletes with a large proportion of slow twitch and fast twitch aerobic skeletal muscle fibre, high metabolic enzyme activities and concentrations, large mitochondria concentration and, of course, the ability to increase the power output generated for a given rate of oxygen consumption and energy expenditure, are generally highly successful distance runners. Aerobic and endurance training have been shown to bring about significant adaptations to the skeletal muscle and its inclusions as well as to the delivery system. In particular, enzyme activity levels are readily mutable, mitochondrial concentrations increase, and some evidence suggests that the fibre distribution is changed. This article briefly reports on changes in skeletal muscle brought about by endurance training and those changes that appear most effective in yielding success in endurance events.  相似文献

Results from 2 relational-priming experiments suggest the existence of an automatic analogical coordination between semantic and arithmetic relations. Word pairs denoting object sets served as primes in a task that elicits "obligatory" activation of addition facts (5 + 3 activates 8; J. LeFevre, J. Bisanz, & L. Mrkonjic, 1988). Semantic relations between the priming words were either aligned or misaligned with the structure of addition (M. Bassok, V. M. Chase, & S. A. Martin, 1998). Obligatory activation of addition facts occurred when the digits were primed by categorically related words (tulips-daisies), which are aligned with addition, but did not occur when the digits were primed by unrelated words (hens-radios, Experiment 1) or by functionally related words (records-songs, Experiment 2), which are misaligned with addition. These findings lend support to the viability of automatic analogical priming (B. A. Spellman, K. J. Holyoak, & R. G. This article describes two experiments that investigated primed facilitation in cued recall, in a situation in which a recognition test was followed by a cued-recall test. Subjects were tested at six intervals, ranging from an immediate test to a maximum delay of 4 weeks. With retention intervals of 2 or 4 weeks, the recall of studied but subsequently unrecognized words was higher than the recall of initially studied words that had not been presented to subjects on the preceding recognition test. Two lexical-decision tasks with 500-ms stimulus-onset asynchrony were conducted with 34 schizophrenic patients. This group consisted of 24 schizophrenic patients with thought disorder (TD) and 10 schizophrenic patients without thought disorder (NTD), 14 psychiatric controls (depressive illness), 20 hospitalized controls, and 20 normal controls. One lexical-decision task with semantic relations (related vs. unrelated, Experiment 1) and 1 task with syntactic relations (congruent vs. incongruent; Experiment 2) were used to evaluate processing of different lexical information. In Experiment 1, although all control groups and NTD schizophrenic patients showed semantic priming, TD schizophrenic patients did not. In Experiment 2, all groups showed a significant syntactic effect. These findings provide evidence for an abnormality in semantic processing and the preservation of syntactic processing in TD schizophrenic patients, thus suggesting a deficit in the processing of semantic information under certain conditions when compared with normal syntactic processing. A major focus of recent research in memory has been performance on implicit tasks. The phenomenon of most interest has been repetition priming, the effect that prior exposure to a stimulus has on later perception of the stimulus or on a later decision about the stimulus. Picture naming, word identification, and word production in stem- and fragment-completion tasks all show repetition priming effects. The separation of implicit from explicit memory systems provides 1 account of this data, but a different theoretical view is proposed here: Repetition-priming effects come about because the processes that perform a task are biased by prior exposure to a stimulus. The processing of the prior stimulus leaves behind byproducts, temporary modifications of the processes, which influence later processing. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the potential of this view for developing new theories and for prompting new empirical questions. Abstinent drug users often report that taking even a small amount of their previously abused drug increases their desire for the drug and can lead to a full relapse. This apparent "priming" effect of drugs has been studied in both laboratory animals and humans. In animals trained to self-administer drugs, small amounts of a previously self-administered drug readily reinstate responding. In humans, administration of a previously abused drug increases self-reported craving and desire for the drug. Priming effects also occur with other reinforcers (e.g., presentation of a food stimulus increases food-reinforced responding). This article examines the generality of priming phenomena, and it examines some of the learned or unlearned processes that underlie the effect. R. Ratcliff and G. McKoon (1995, 1996, 1997; R. Ratcliff, D. Allbritton, & G. McKoon, 1997) have argued that repetition priming effects are solely due to bias. They showed that prior study of the target resulted in a benefit in a later implicit memory task. However, prior study of a stimulus similar to the target resulted in a cost. The present study, using a 2-alternative forced-choice procedure, investigated the effect of prior study in an unbiased condition: Both alternatives were studied prior to their presentation in an implicit memory task. Contrary to a pure bias interpretation of priming, consistent evidence was obtained in 3 implicit memory tasks (word fragment completion, auditory word identification, and picture identification) that performance was better when both alternatives were studied than when neither alternative was studied. The correct table appears in the erratum.] Studied priming effects in a semantic matching task that distinguished visually based matching processes from nominally and semantically based matching processes, using 24 undergraduates. Ss judged semantic matches for 3 types of word pairs: identical (e.g., robin–robin), same category (e.g., robin–sparrow), and different category (e.g., robin–truck). Visual matching was isolated by comparing performance between physical identity (e.g., robin–robin) and nominal identity (e.g., robin–ROBIN) pairs. Physical identity pairs, which allowed visually based matching, exhibited an interaction between priming and the typicality of category exemplars that was absent in nominal identity and same-category pairs. Priming had no effect on nominal identity pairs. For same-category pairs, which required semantically based matching, priming produced facilitation at all levels of typicality. The results bring the semantic matching paradigm into agreement with other procedures that show that priming facilitates processing for all related targets. Level of processing (LOP) has often been shown to affect performance on explicit memory tasks, but not on implicit memory tasks. These findings have been explained by the processing framework (H. J. Roediger et al, 1989): Study–test transfer depends on the overlap between the type of processing at study and at test. This framework predicts that conceptually driven implicit (CDI) memory tasks should be affected by an LOP manipulation because the study and test tasks share common conceptual processes. This prediction was investigated with 2 CDI tasks: general knowledge retrieval and category exemplar generation. LOP effects were found in both tasks, thus supporting the processing framework. Category exemplar priming declined rapidly over a 90-min interval, and elaborative study conditions enhanced the duration of priming relative to physical conditions. "A study of performance trends in simple and choice reaction time tasks in nonpsychotic, brain-injured patients and a matched group of control patients indicated that, within the limits investigated (30 trials in each task), there were no significant practice effects with respect to mean reaction time for either group in either task. The performances of those brain-injured patients whose initial reaction times were within normal limits also failed to reflect significant practice effects… . The brain-injured patients showed a significant increase in intra-individual variability in simple reaction time with continued practice. Objective: Health advocates have focused on the prevalence of advertising for calorie-dense low-nutrient foods as a significant contributor to the obesity epidemic. This research tests the hypothesis that exposure to food advertising during TV viewing may also contribute to obesity by triggering automatic snacking of available food. Design: In Experiments 1a and 1b, elementary-school-age children watched a cartoon that contained either food advertising or advertising for other products and received a snack while watching. In Experiment 2, adults watched a TV program that included food advertising that promoted snacking and/or fun product benefits, food advertising that promoted nutrition benefits, or no food advertising. The adults then tasted and evaluated a range of healthy to unhealthy snack foods in an apparently separate experiment. Main Outcome Measures: Amount of snack foods consumed during and after advertising exposure. Results: Children consumed 45% more when exposed to food advertising. Adults consumed more of both healthy and unhealthy snack foods following exposure to snack food advertising compared to the other conditions. In both experiments, food advertising increased consumption of products not in the presented advertisements, and these effects were not related to reported hunger or other conscious influences. Conclusion: These experiments demonstrate the power of food advertising to prime automatic eating behaviors and thus influence far more than brand preference alone. In young healthy nonsmokers, effects of nicotine on semantic processing have been observed under strategy-based priming procedures but not under more general priming procedures (Holmes, Chenery, & Copland, 2008; Holmes, Chenery, & Copland, 2010). Effects of nicotine under general priming procedures, however, may be mediated by baseline priming levels that are below optimum such as when compromised by disease. Nicotinic mechanisms may be involved in the cognitive sequalae of Parkinson's disease (PD). Evidence suggests that semantic processing may be compromised in PD but the potential benefit of nicotinic stimulation is unknown. This study investigated the effects of nicotine on semantic processing in nonsmokers with PD (n = 12) and nonsmoking matched controls (n = 17) using general priming procedures. Specifically, an automatic priming task (0.15 relatedness proportion, RP, and 200 ms stimulus onset asynchrony, SOA) and a controlled priming task (0.8 RP and 1000 ms SOA) were used. Prime-target category relation (category related, noncategory related) was also manipulated. Transdermal nicotine patches (7 mg/24 h) were administered in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. For the automatic task, nicotine did not influence priming effects for PD. Unexpectedly, compromised automatic priming for controls was ameliorated. For the controlled task, nicotine influenced priming effects for PD but not controls. The patterns of priming and nicotine effects across the tasks suggest an age-related slowing of the rate of semantic activation for controls, which may be exacerbated in PD. Overall, the findings indicate that nicotine can improve compromised semantic processing in PD, and also influence semantic processing in healthy older individuals. In this article, ambiguity and synonymy effects were examined in lexical decision, naming, and semantic categorization tasks. Whereas the typical ambiguity advantage was observed in lexical decision and naming, an ambiguity disadvantage was observed in semantic categorization. In addition, a synonymy effect (slower latencies for words with many synonyms than for words with few synonyms) was observed in lexical decision and naming but not in semantic categorization. These results suggest that (a) an ambiguity disadvantage arises only when a task requires semantic processing, (b) the ambiguity advantage and the synonymy disadvantage in lexical decision and naming are due to semantic feedback, and (c) these effects are determined by the nature of the feedback relationships from semantics to orthography and phonology. The generation effect is moderated by experimental design, affecting recall in within-subjects designs but typically not in between-subjects designs. However, N. W. Mulligan (2001) found that the generation effect emerged over repeated recall tests in a between-subjects design, calling into question the generality of this limiting condition. In addition, the generate condition but not the read condition produced hypermnesia (increased recall over tests). The present experiments demonstrate that semantic-based (semantic-associate and category-associate) generation tasks produce this pattern of results whereas nonsemantic (letter transposition, rhyme, word fragment) generation tasks do not. Thus, the emergent generation effect appears to be a byproduct of semantic elaboration rather than a direct product of generation. In addition, high- and low-imagery words produced equivalent hypermnesia and emergent generation effects, arguing against a mediating role for imagistic encoding. Finally, there is no evidence of an emergent generation effect for nonwords, another traditional limiting condition of the generation effect. Three experiments investigated the processing of categorical information in context. Exp 1 used multidimensional scaling techniques to identify some common and unique dimensions for a given set of occupational terms in 3 different contexts. The results of Exp 2 indicate that these context-specific representations (as opposed to the general one) were used in the solution of word analogies. The results of Exp 2 also suggest that Ss solve these word analogies by means of heuristics rather than algorithmic rules. The results of Exp 3 support this conclusion. In eight experiments we investigated spatial and semantic priming effects. In Experiments 1 and 2, subjects made judgments about the locations of buildings on their campus and locations of states in the United States. We found that location judgments were faster when preceded by judgments about geographically near locations than by judgments about relatively far locations. In Experiments 3a, 3b, and 3c, subjects judged words as names of states of the United States or as nonstate words. No spatial priming effect was found in any experiment, nor was a priming effect found for nonstate words preceded by semantically related words. Experiment 4 compared spatial priming in a state–nonstate classification with a state-plus-location classification task. Spatial priming was found in the latter but not the former. These results are interpreted with an account that treats spatial and nonspatial knowledge as separate structures. Using the nonstate words of Experiment 3c, Experiments 5a and 5b together demonstrated semantic priming in a lexical decision task. Proportion compatible manipulations are often used to index strategic processes in selective attention tasks. Here, a subtle confound in proportion compatible manipulations is considered. Specifically, as the proportion of compatible trials increases, the ratio of complete repetitions and complete alternations to partial repetitions increases on compatible trials but decreases on incompatible trials. This confound is demonstrated to lead to an overestimation in the magnitude of the proportion compatible effect in the context of both a Stroop and a Simon task. Reaction time (RT) is reduced in serial choice tasks when a particular signal, as distinct from the response made to it, is repeated on successive trials, N–1 and N. This experiment with 30 undergraduates showed a separate signal recency effect. RT is also reduced when a signal presented on trial N–2 recurs on trial N. In 3 many-to-one signal-to-response mapping tasks (2 responses 4 signals, 2 responses 8 signals, and 2 responses 16 signals), the effects of recent occurrence of signals were shown to be distinct from the effects of recent occurrence of responses made to them. The magnitude of signal recency effects varies directly with set size, but decreases, and may eventually disappear, with practice. The effect decreases with practice faster when signal sets are small than when they are large. A simple model accounts for these results and for earlier data from many-to-one mapping tasks that show that variations in signal entropy cease to affect choice reaction time if practice is sufficiently prolonged. Predictions from this model for changes in component RT distributions with signal set size, signal repetition, signal recency, and practice suggest further experiments.
